John Cameron CBE is a man that needs no introduction. From being Scotland's largest sheep farmer, running 800 suckler cows, a beef cattle contract with Waitrose and a herd of pedigree Hereford cattle, we chat live at his farm in Fife about his incredible career in agriculture. We also have a fun a great chat about his other passion, trains, hearing some superb stories from the great man in this unmissable episode!
We begin a new year of the show this week, and kick off the campaign by welcoming These Estates and Oiseaux musician and Briarpatch publisher John Cameron for an unseen selection from his collection, a prescient political satire that is now 52 years old but could release today with few alterations and still feel timely. It's 1972's The Candidate, directed by Michael Ritchie, and starring Robert Redford, Peter Boyle, Melvyn Douglas, Don Porter, Allen Garfield, Karen Carlson and Michael Lerner. It's a comedy without any jokes that still manages to be fairly funny, at least when its bleak political outlook doesn't feel equal parts harrowing and deadly accurate. Plus: J Mo's hooked on Pocket Card Jockey, while Hayley and John are willing to die for Casino Regina. Other works discussed on this episode include Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, Aquaman & The Last Kingdom, Beau Is Afraid, The Devils, Go, Ocean's Eleven, Bulworth, Fletch, Fletch Lives, season 6 of The West Wing, Parks & Recreation, The Thick of It, In The Loop, Death of Stalin, The Newsroom (CBC), The Ides of March, Our Brand Is Crisis, and Lions For Lambs among many more. If you'd like to watch The Candidate before listening to our discussion, some maniac has posted the entire movie for free on YouTube. And we thank them. We'll be back next week as Year 2 on the pod continues with a shot at redemption for two top stars who have recently wronged us on the pod by being in movies we watched that were not good. Yes, Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer can completely redeem themselves as we'll be back to watch 1994's Tombstone, a 90s VHS classic that somehow both hosts have never seen before. It's currently streaming on Disney+ if you want to watch it, and of course we're wrapping up the month the week after with our monthly canon submission, Christopher Nolan's TENET. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
We're celebrating one full year of being unlikely partners on the podcast beat by finally getting around to what we've been told is one of the all-time great buddy cop movies. Yes it's 1989's Tango & Cash, directed by a three-headed monster of directors on a deeply troubled production but overseen in post-production by Demolition Man editor Stuart Baird, and starring Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Jack Palance, Teri Hatcher, Brion James, James Hong, Michael J. Pollard, Robert Z'Dar, Lewis Arquette, Eddie Bunker and Clint Howard. No sense sugar-coating it, she doesn't want it to be a secret: Hayley hated this movie. But J Mo still makes the case for its not-so-guilty pleasures, and we reflect on a full year of doing the show. Of course, with the Oscars on Sunday we also take a quick minute to make our picks in the major categories, leading Justin to discover that while he's now seen 100 films from 2023, he's somehow missed almost all the Oscar movies. Embarrassing. We're going heavy on Oppenheimer. Big surprise. Other works discussed in this episode include Dune: Part Two, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Spaceballs, The Princess Bride, The Emperor's New Groove, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Voyeurs, Deep Water, Nocturne, The Perfection, Tenet, The Fast Franchise, First Blood, Rocky, Thief, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, Cobra, and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. We'll be back next week to kick off a new campaign as we're joined by Briarpatch publisher and all-around good dude John Cameron to discuss the 1972 Robert Redford political satire The Candidate, which is currently available to watch in its entirety for free on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
John Cameron, a mild-mannered real estate agent from Seattle, now has a criminal record thanks to his presence at the disastrous January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol. On this episode of the Adult In The Room, hear in his words why he decided to cross the country for the certification day rally that evolved into one of the darkest days in modern American political history, what he saw personally that day, and how his arrest and subsequent sentencing ignited his desire to get even more active in the political process. ***** TOP STORIES West Coast, Messed Coast™: It's Gavin's Border Invasion Now What Can You Do If We're Invaded? Luke 1:13-20 We live in a day and age where there are many things that come against us. However, just like the seven sons of Sceva we might go after strongholds thinking we have the authority only to realise that we don't. The only way to become a generation that walks in releasing the power of God is to remember the following: We can't get authority from God if we don't have intimacy with God. We need a generation who know how to linger in the presence of God.3. Vision will come when we stand in the presence of God. Our identity and our authority should be the result of our intimacy with the Lord whereas our doubts and fears will be a manifestation of our distance from Him. So wherever you are today on your journey, press into His presence and ask the Lord to teach you how to spend time with Him!Application: Do you find yourself rushing out of the presence of God? When was the last time you sat and lingered in His presence?Prayer: Father, teach me how to sit with you. I long to be beside you and I'm sorry for the letting life's distractions get in the way of intimacy with you. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear your still small voice, and help me draw closer to you daily!

God's perception of the prophets and the prophets' perceptions of themselves are completely opposite. In this day and age, we are fully convinced that we know God's heart and are speaking on His behalf. But how can we be so sure? The prophets of this age are busy with full calendars and an abundance of activities. But what does the Lord say? They speak not out of listening to His word. They have activity but they do not have authority. God wants us as a church to be filled with His authority and to release His power. God wants His church to be a gateway to heaven. In this scripture, the Lord shows observation, offering, and gives us further understanding: Observation: We're so busy that we don't fully spend time with Him. The God that we worship is close at hand, and although we live in an age where everything else is close at hand, the great tragedy for our generation is that we think we know the Lord, but we have only scratched the surface of who He is. He is not JUST close at hand but far away, in need of pursuit. Offering: He is giving us access to His throne and wants us to come into proximity with Him. We have to disconnect to connect. There have to be seasons in our lives where we push back on all the other things that are close at hand. There are parts of God that can only be discovered when we give God our day. Understanding: It's the far away God that comes to us in moments of our life that marks us with calling, with commission, giving us faith and vision. The far away God ruins us for the ordinary and makes us say that we don't want anything else but heaven right now. We're sustained by the close at hand God, but revival is started by the far away God. There are some levels of demonic oppression that can only be broken with prayers to the far away God, so let's press into that today!

After the news segment of this week's Vatican Insider is Part II of my special guest in the interview segment, Fr. Peter John Cameron, O.P. Many of you know him from his years as editor-in-chief of Magnificat but there's so much more to his story. Born in Rhode Island, raised in Connecticut, he was ordained a Dominican priest in 1986. For 24 years, Father Cameron taught homiletics at St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie, New York, and three other seminaries. He is now in Rome and currently holds the Carl J. Peter Chair of Homiletics at the Pontifical North American College in Rome where we spoke last week. Homilies are our main focus, of course but the entire conversation is riveting, especially when you learn of Father Peter's theatre background and how that helped him prepare and deliver homilies! Lots of insightful, compelling stories, including on the length of a homily – fascinating! – and the difference between a homily and a sermon. So don't miss that conversation!
