"Ben's PTSD manifested as his alcoholism and his self-destruction as the Spider. ‘I'm just going to go out there and get punched in the face voluntarily, and maybe I'll do some good at the same time.' "— Will FreelandBen Riley didn't become the Spider to save anyone. He did it for the rush, and Spider-Noir on Prime Video is honest enough to build a whole show on that confession. Marvel comics expert Will Freeland joins Matthew Fox to dig into the series: why it works better than either of them expected, how a World War I origin story reframes the cynicism of 1930s noir as something closer to undiagnosed shell shock, and what Nicolas Cage gets right once he settles into the role. They dig into the show's remarkable villain architecture, where almost no one is simply bad, the stealth Black Cat origin hiding inside Li Jun Li's Kat Hardy, and the choice to watch in black and white. What does it mean that Ben's final heroic act is sacrificing the cure he wanted for himself to save the man who has the woman he loves? And can someone who chose heroism for selfish reasons ever really choose it for the right ones?Full show notes and resources: Visit Our SiteConnect with Will Freeland: Twitch · Instagram**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, an Ethical Panda podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. The Fly (1958), Return of the Fly (1959), and Curse of the Fly (1965) Among the many films in which deviant mad scientists pay the price for meddling with forces beyond human understanding, The Fly stands apart. Released in 1958, it presents a scientist whose intentions are genuinely noble: someone striving to create something that could benefit humanity. Unfortunately, an unforeseen accident turns his dream into a nightmare, and tragedy soon follows. While the film ultimately becomes a monster story, it offers far more than a typical 1950s creature feature. And, of course, when a film succeeds at the box office, sequels are inevitable. In this case, two followed, even if the third took six years to arrive. Across all three films, the Delambre family's experiments—and mistakes—continue, once again exacting a terrible toll in life, sanity, and suffering. Fans often disagree about which entry is the strongest, which is underrated, and which falls short, so we decided to take a deep dive into the entire trilogy. Along the way, we may give you a few new things to think about the next time you watch these films. And if you hear any buzzing while listening to the show, I'm sure it's nothing. Films mentioned in this episode: The Black Cat (1989), The Black Room (1935), Blood Feast (1963), The Blues Brothers (1980), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Curse of the Fly (1965), The Death Dealers aka Psychomania (1973), Demonia (1990), The Devil's Honey (1986), The Exorcist (1973), The Face of Fu Manchu (1965), The Fly (1958), The Fly (1986), Frankenstein (1931), The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), Kiss of the Vampire (1963), Mark of the Vampire (1935), Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), Psycho (1960), Rasputin the Mad Monk (1966), Return of the Fly (1959), Space Master X-7 (1958), Touch of Death (1988), To the Devil a Daughter (1976), The Vampire (1957), Witchcraft (1964)

#CageClub is back, and it's a brand new era and a brand new area: TV! After addressing our plans to cover the rest of Spider-Noir on a weekly basis (as well as the two movies we missed), we step into the office with, well, "Step Into My Office." We talk about how this series feels bigger (in terms of critical reception and coverage) than a Cage property has in years, the impact of watching it in black and white (versus choosing the color option), and the extensive New York Times interview just published this week. Then, we dive into the details of the first episode. We have questions, like: Ben Reilly? Is he connected at all to the much-maligned comic series with that character? We talk about the film skipping a traditional origin story for, essentially, a second-origin story for Cage's character. We explore the rogues' gallery starting to take shape - including Silvermane, Sandman, and Black Cat - and how the show exceeding our expectations in spite of some recent superhero burnout. We also discuss how the show nails its noir trappings, and we wonder what's next for this character.

Susan Hyde In 1978, the women's tennis team at California State University, Northridge was rocked by a grisly murder borne out of jealousy. Susan Hyde and her partner of several years, Janis Hasse, lived and worked together on campus, but Hasse's relationship with 21, Loni Andersen, carried on even though Hasse lived with Hyde. When Hyde was out of town, Hasse and Andersen would get together. Finally, Hasse ended the affair, and though Andersen seemed to move on, she was silently plotting and planning to get back together with Hasse, but it would all end in murder. Robert Evans In 1986, Robert Evans went missing until his body was found beaten, battered, and bruised. His killer would be a young man who had developed a penchant for cruising gay men and robbing them; in this case, a victim stood between him and what he wanted. The trial's ending might surprise you. Fred Pletka In 1977, the nude bodies of Robert Schmeckpeper and James King were found in their Sioux City trailer, setting off a case that would spiral into a brutal trial and a disturbing legal defense. Fred Pletka was eventually convicted, but the way the crime was framed says as much about the era's prejudice as it does about the murders themselves. The Black Cat On New Year's Eve 1966, undercover LAPD officers raided the Black Cat bar in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, triggering one of the earliest LGBTQ civil rights protests in U.S. history. There was another bar raided on the same night as the Black Cat, two patrons were arrested bring the total to 16. The protest against police violence across Los Angeles was one of the first protests where LGBTQ+ folks joined in common cause with members of the African American and Latino communities, also protesting violence at the hands of police. Suspiria (1977), Inferno (1980), and Mother of Tears (2007) There are very few horror fans out there who don't know the work of Dario Argento, especially the giallo films he's most famous for. While he only occasionally ventured into supernatural horror, whenever he did, he approached it with the same unmistakable style that defines all of his work. After helping define the giallo genre with Deep Red, Argento shifted gears and gave us Suspiria, a film that presented violence through a blinding explosion of color and an intense soundtrack that pounds through the speakers. It looked unlike anything audiences had really seen before. Three years later, Argento continued the saga of the dreaded Three Mothers with Inferno, expanding the mythology surrounding these wicked witches even further. Then, after a 27-year wait, he completed the trilogy with Mother of Tears. Say what you will about any or all of these films, but they are all unmistakably Dario Argento. In this episode, we're taking a look at all three entries in the Three Mothers trilogy, exploring both the mythology behind the Three Mothers and the unique qualities that set each film apart. We all have our favorite of the trilogy, but hopefully you'll come away with a new appreciation for moments or ideas you may have overlooked in previous viewings. So join us for our little study group as we dive into the worlds of Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum, and Mater Lachrymarum. But a word of caution… they don't like people knowing about them, so be warned. Frodo the cat serves as the ultimate horror witness in A Quiet Place: Day One (with Lupita Nyong’o) Crypticon Seattle, the great Pacific Northwest horror convention, has once again come and gone, but the memories linger. The panels are what make the convention feel like a class reunion. The panels are produced entirely by volunteer experts from across the region and are the ultimate in fan interaction. This is what it feels like to create a horror community, sharing our ideas and experiences with each other. This year, I decided to record some of the panels I participated in and attended to give you a sense of what happens at these events. This Pets in Horror panel was hosted by Brien Gorham, and I participated in it along with Kathy Fennesy and Todd Johnstson. If you are a long-time reader of our website or a listener of our podcast, you will know that I have a big ol’ soft spot for pets in horror. Whether they are the MacGuffins, the heroes, or the villains of the story, pets provide strong emotional connective tissue within horror constructs. The use of pets also sparks some great debates regarding the narrative use of animals. Because we have such a natural affinity for critters, horror movies tend to exploit those feelings by putting the animals in peril. Fair, or not? We will talk about that in this discussion. Brien was inspired by the success of last year’s remarkable film Good Boy which we have been a huge proponent for. You can use that link to listen to an interview with director Ben Leonberg, who discusses how he coaxed an award-winning performance from his pet dog, Indy. That movie, however, is just the tip of a very big trope iceberg. Thank you to Jason and Jasen for putting me on this panel, as it is something near and dear to me, and to many attending Crypticon. Brien Gorham outlined his panel discussion topics for this panel: “Indy the Dog from Good Boy has become the latest in a line of cinematic pets to steal our hearts, but domestic animals have a long history in horror movies. Whether that be as a witness, antagonist, or, as in the case of Indy, a protagonist. Let’s discuss how our collective best friends have been represented in horror films.” Introductions Opening question: If you could choose one pet from a horror movie to have in your home, who would you choose and why? Some larger questions that can be applied to any category: How do our personal relationships with pets affect how we see them in stories? (Please feel free to include personal stories where appropriate) How does the motivation of a pet differ from human motivation? Altruism? How do we recognize animal performances? (Indy's acting win) What resources are available for those who are sensitive to animal violence?  Part 1: Pets as Witnesses Possible Movies: Cat's Eye, Poltergeist, The Hills Have Eyes I and II Let's start with movies where a family pet serves as a witness or bystander to an individual or family crisis. In these cases, what purpose does the inclusion of the pet serve? How much do we hate it when pets are introduced just to be killed off for sympathy? Part 2: Pets as Heroes Possible Movies: Good Boy, Cat's Eye, Phenomena, The Hills Have Eyes Next, let's explore pets that go above and beyond, playing an active role in saving the day. Which movie pets do you most admire? How do certain traits of specific animals play into this heroism? How much do we hate it when animals sacrifice themselves for humans? Part 3: Pets as Antagonists  Possible Movies: Cujo, Lake Placid, The Uncanny, Uninvited, Pet Sematary, The Black Cat (any version) What happens when man's best friend turns violent, and our furry friends rebel against us? The most terrifying pets in horror? The most heartbreaking transformations? Closing What beloved pets have we not seen represented in horror movies? PET HORROR RESOURCES You can check out our Favorite Horror Movie Dogs Dead List for our updated list of horror hounds for your reference. Kathy Fennessy is a former president of the Seattle Film Critics Society and runs the Seattle Film Blog. She has a blog post titled “Good Boy and Other House Pets in Horror: Purrs, barks, Growls, and Deadly Attacks.“ I find that Kathy is the unofficial research librarian for Crypticon Seattle and has a deep and thorough knowledge of the genre. For those of you who get triggered by animal harm or death in movies, please visit “Does the Dog Die?“ It’s a great resource for people who need to filter their movies for moments that will trigger anxiety, with the primary trope being that of harm to dogs. It also covers things like harm to children and rape, which are non-starter elements for many people. A Recording of Brien Gohram’s Good Boy: Pets in Horror Panel Panelists:Brien Gorham – HostKathy Fennesy Eric LiTodd Johnston Please note: I was using a compressor microphone on the table, so the audio isn’t as clean as it would be with our dynamic podcasting microphones. Todd Johnston, in particular, is a bit faint, though I did boost the audio when he is speaking. Don’t over-adjust your volume, though, because when the conversation turns back to the rest of the panelists, it picks up. In this NDS Chronicles episode, David Lee Corbo (The Raven) and Top Lobster read raw paranormal testimonies while hyping the official Bohemian Grove 2026 event.First story: a man's lifelong black cat “familiar” appears during toxic relationships and leads him to scry in candle flame, hearing the whisper “Scotta” — confirmed in an Akashic Records reading as his Kaliak (ancient Celtic crone goddess) spirit guide from a past life as warlord turned monk in Scotland. They bail on the AI-slop story midway.Second testimony from Jesse (Ontario): his young daughter suffers horrific night terrors — standing, screaming, pissing herself with zero morning memory. After listening to NDS, the family purges Halloween decorations, Matilda, Zombieland, and demonic movies. They discover a witch aunt on dad's side and Freemason great-grandfather (sound editor on Invasion of the Body Snatchers & The Manchurian Candidate). Grandma's medium roommate and her black cat that went feral during her deathbed conversion to Christ seal the spiritual attack.Plus: full Bohemian Grove breakdown — VIP day Aug 7 at Standard Coffee Shop & Casino (live Bible study with Matt, Ed Mabry, possibly Laura Baker, 50-person cozy hang), main event Aug 8 at Wildwood Community Center (400 capacity, stage, merch, bar, live podcast streams), Timothy Albarino costume contest with megalithic prison pose, life-size Kandahar giant photo op, and more.Unboxing includes banana menorah, “It Ain't Gonna Suck Itself” lobster tank top, Dictionary of Angels book, and Dead Sea Scrolls texts. That dual perspective shapes everything, from how he thinks about audience expectations to how stories are built to connect on the shelf. This interview goes far beyond Lost Fantasy #9. Timmy Heague digs into his unlikely path from comic shop owner to working writer, how collaborations with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas actually function behind the scenes, and why being on the retail front lines gives him a sharper read on what fans want than most creators. You'll also hear about the realities of breaking in, the push and pull of co-writing, and the mentors who helped shape his voice. It's part origin story, part industry insight, and a candid look at how comics really come together. What interested you most about picking up his story at this breaking point? You're working with Eamon Winkle on the Bombshell story. What makes Bombshell a compelling lens into this world, and how does her story complement or contrast Henry's? You're co-writing this issue with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, while also contributing to a backup that ties into Fireborn. How did you all divide the storytelling responsibilities, and what did that collaboration look like on the page? You've recently come off co-writing Archie vs. Minor Threats with Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, which thrives on tonal contrast. Did that experience influence how you approach tone here, especially with the mix of action, sci-fi, and character work? The solicit teases Henry being pulled into a new case while still recovering. How do you balance forward momentum with giving weight to his injuries and trauma? The issue introduces the “Cyber-Ronin,” which is an instantly striking concept. What was the creative spark behind that character, and how does he challenge the world of hunters in a new way? Lost Fantasy blends genres in a big way, from cyberpunk elements to mythic hunting lore. When you're writing in that kind of sandbox, how do you keep the story grounded and emotionally clear? Fun one: if you had to drop Bombshell into another comic universe for a one-shot, where would you send them and why?

From vengeful spirits and haunted houses to ghost trains, talking cats, and a lake monster with a taste for swimmers — these chilling tales will make you think twice before laughing off April Fools Day.IN THIS EPISODE: This episode was originally aired on April 1st, 2019. Many podcasts and YouTube channels today are taking advantage of the date on the calendar and playing practical jokes on their subscribers in celebration of All Fools Day. I admit, I was tempted to begin a story and then Rick-Roll you, but instead I thought it might be fun to bring some dark stories into today's podcast that have a funny or amusing twist to them. Still creepy, but comical as well. The Ghost Furnace - Episode 150 "Dana of Black Cat Tarot" This week we are joined by our new friend Dana of The Black Cat Tarot studio in Harmony, PA. Tarot still has a bit of a stigma to it, and even if people are lukewarm to the idea of someone reading cards, a misunderstanding of the process is common. We've been wanting to do a tarot centric show for awhile now but needed someone who had the experience and knowledge to do the topic justice. Dana has been kind enough to lend her knowledge, insight and experience as a tarot reader to help give everyone an baseline understanding of what tarot is, and what its like reading for people. We really hope that if you're not quite ready to pick up a deck yourself after this episode, you'll have a better understanding of what goes into this art.  You can connect with Dana on her instagram @the.dana.arcana or book a reading at theblackcattarot.com If you have a story you'd like to share, a topic you'd like us to look into, or feedback for the show, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

Why Listen? Find out why Peter Parker's body might be failing him in the newest trailer and which secret X-Men cameo just changed the trajectory of the MCU. Whether you are curious about the "Man-Spider" theory or the political fallout of Wilson Fisk's mayoralty, this episode provides the deep-dive analysis you need to stay ahead of the curve. What You'll Learn The Man-Spider Theory: Evidence of Peter Parker's mutating body and organic web-shooters. MCU Mutants: The subtle clues pointing to Sadie Sink as the MCU's Jean Grey. The Golden Path: Why Paul Atreides' journey in Dune is darker than you think. Kingpin's New Era: What to expect from the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Is Peter Parker Mutating into Man-Spider? In this episode, Frank and Squeaks break down the high-octane Spider-Man: Brave New World trailer. We explore the haunting theory that Peter's powers are evolving—or decaying—into something more monstrous. With Peter increasingly isolated and stalking his old friends, the stakes have never been more personal. We also look at the Hulk's mysterious arm brace and what it means for the return of a more "Savage" version of the character. Did the X-Men Just Secretly Arrive in the MCU? The nerd world is buzzing about a specific jacket seen in the trailer. Could Sadie Sink be playing a young Jean Grey, or is this another Black Cat bait-and-switch? We analyze the visual evidence and discuss how the MCU is slowly "dropping" mutants into the narrative without a formal announcement. We also spot some deep-cut comic villains like Boomerang and Tarantula that suggest a more grounded, street-level focus for this installment. How Will Dune Handle the Terror of Face Dancers? Shifting gears to Arrakis, we dive into the latest Dune footage. The focus shifts to the terrifying "Face Dancers"—shapeshifters who can infiltrate any organization. We discuss the "Golden Path" and Paul Atreides' realization that his rise to power will be paved with blood. This segment explores the psychological horror elements being brought to the forefront of the sci-fi epic. Key Takeaways Isolated Hero: Peter Parker's "fresh start" has left him more vulnerable and potentially more dangerous as he struggles with his changing biology. The Mutant Blueprint: The MCU is likely using background characters to establish X-Men lore before the formal team-up. Political Warfare: Daredevil Season 2 isn't just about fighting; it's about Wilson Fisk legitimizing his power through the Mayor's office. Sci-Fi Horror: Dune is leaning heavily into the "Face Dancer" shapeshifting lore, which adds a layer of paranoia to Paul's journey. Quotes "I think a lot of people wanted a grounded Spider-Man, but we're also kind of getting this isolated Spider-Man as well." "Imagine if Fisk was handing that key over instead of her. I'd lose my damn mind." "He knows the golden path is going to be laid in blood. He has to conquer the universe first." Call to Action Follow the show right now so you never miss a theory! Link to Audio version “The Bat” is a short horror monologue recorded by Bela Lugosi, built around his spoken persona rather than a conventional plot. In it he addresses the listener directly and describes the bat as a creature of night and hush, a watcher at windows and eaves, half in the natural world and half in something older and less defined. The piece is more mood than story: a sequence of images about darkness, wings, and unease, letting pauses and emphases do most of the work.  After arriving in the United States as a stateless immigrant in 1920, Lugosi struggled with the English language, often memorising his lines phonetically. His big break came in 1927 when he was cast as the lead in the Broadway production of Dracula. His performance was so magnetic that Universal Pictures cast him in the 1931 film adaptation. Lugosi's portrayal—characterised by his slow, melodic Hungarian accent, intense gaze, and formal evening wear—transformed the vampire from a finished, rat-like monster into a seductive, sophisticated villain. This performance became the template for every vampire depiction that followed. While Dracula made him a superstar, it also trapped him. Lugosi found it nearly impossible to land roles outside of the horror genre. The Rivalry: He was frequently paired with Boris Karloff (who played Frankenstein's monster), though Karloff often received higher billing and better pay, which reportedly frustrated Lugosi. The Roles: He gave notable performances in White Zombie (1932), The Black Cat (1934), and as the broken-necked Ygor in Son of Frankenstein (1939). Health Struggles: Chronic sciatica led to a severe dependency on painkillers. As his health declined and his "classic" style of horror fell out of fashion, he found himself relegated to low-budget "B-movies." In the 1950s, Lugosi experienced a strange career coda through his friendship with cult director Ed Wood. He appeared in films now famous for being "so bad they're good," such as Glen or Glenda and Plan 9 from Outer Space (released posthumously). Lugosi passed away in 1956 at the age of 73. In a final tribute to the role that defined him, he was buried in his full Dracula cape at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California. Despite his difficult later years, he remains one of the most recognisable and influential icons in cinema history.
