DescriptionDavid Diener, Assistant Professor of Education at Hillsdale College and president of The Alcuin Fellowship, joins Christopher Perrin to reflect on how a philosopher's training can become a vocational doorway into the renewal of classical education. Drawing from years in K–12 school leadership and now higher education, Diener describes why classical schools often foster unusually rich intellectual community—and why that matters in an age of academic fragmentation. He also introduces Hillsdale's Master of Arts in Classical Education (MACE), a program designed to address one of the movement's biggest bottlenecks: forming well-equipped teachers and administrators. The conversation highlights how enduring philosophical anchors—from Plato and Aristotle to Aquinas—can be translated into concrete classroom practice. Diener then traces the role of The Alcuin Fellowship in deepening the movement's historical and theoretical grounding, including its influence on The Liberal Arts Tradition. Finally, they look outward to the global growth of classical Christian education, including partnerships and training initiatives in Africa, such as the Rafiki Foundation, and expanding work across Latin America. David Diener has a forthcoming monograph in Spanish that will provide chapter-length essays on various aspects of classical Christian education. Additionally, he has an upcoming course on ClassicalU.com will release in the spring of 2026.Episode OutlineFrom philosophy to teaching: Diener's academic formation, early teaching experience abroad, and why education became his focusWhy classical schools attract scholars: the “faculty-of-friends” culture and how it can outpace typical undergraduate settingsHillsdale's MACE program: structure, distinctives, and the need for teacher formation at scaleThe Alcuin Fellowship: purpose, retreats, the “scholar-practitioner” model, and the ecosystem role it playsPublications and intellectual consolidation: how collaborative work helped birth The Liberal Arts Tradition by Kevin Clark, DLS, and Ravi Jain Global and Latin American growth: partnerships, conferences, and emerging networks across continentsKey Topics & TakeawaysFormation Through Practices: What we repeatedly do shapes what we love.Classical Schools as Intellectual Communities: Classical faculties often cultivate cross-disciplinary conversation and shared learning in ways that counter modern academic siloing.Theory-to-Practice Formation: Strong programs don't leave philosophy abstract—they press big ideas into classroom realities and school leadership decisions. The Teacher-Leader Pipeline is the Bottleneck: Sustainable growth depends on forming more capable teachers and administrators, not merely opening more schools. Why MACE is Built the Way it is: A shared core creates common language and vision; later specialization prepares teachers and leaders for distinct roles.Fellowship as Infrastructure for Renewal: The Alcuin Fellowship functions as a hub for scholar-practitioners who think deeply and serve schools faithfully. From Local Renewal to Global Opportunity: The movement's growth is increasingly international, with meaningful work underway in Africa and expanding initiatives in Latin America.Questions & DiscussionWhat kind of “fragmentation” have you experienced in education (or your own formation)? What practices have helped you move toward integration? Why might a classical school faculty create stronger intellectual friendship than many modern institutions?Compare your current context to a “lunch-table culture” where teachers learn together across disciplines. What would it take to cultivate that kind of shared learning where you are? What is the role of a fellowship (formal or informal) in renewing an educational tradition?Identify one fellowship function you most need: reading, conversation, research, mentoring, or mutual sharpening. What could be your next practical step to build that community? How should the classical renewal relate to other organizations and conferences in the movement? What do you hope conferences and associations provide beyond inspiration (formation, scholarship, standards, support)? How can leaders prevent “event energy” from replacing sustained local practice? What opportunities—and challenges—come with global growth of classical Christian education?Discuss the difference between exporting a model and serving a local culture with deep roots. What if the secret to overcoming imposter syndrome isn't getting rid of your fear, but learning to invert your perspective and use it as fuel?In this episode of Glass Ceilings and Sticky Floors, Erica Rooney sits down with Michelle "Mace" Curran, a former F-16 fighter pilot and lead solo pilot for the US Air Force Thunderbirds. As only one of two women in history to hold that title, Michelle has flown inverted inches from her wingman at 500 mph—all while battling the same inner critic that many high-achieving women face in the boardroom.Michelle shares how she moved from a shy, introverted high-achiever to a decorated combat veteran, revealing the mental discipline required to override survival instincts and the power of "call sign culture" in building psychological safety.Inside the Episode:Training Over Instinct: Michelle explains how the "insane" maneuvers of an air show are actually the result of thousands of hours of repetition, and how that same building of competence is the foundation for confidence in any male-dominated career. The Survival Brain in the Boardroom: How to distinguish between real physical danger and the primal fear of social judgment. Michelle shares her "zoom out" method to get worst-case scenarios out of your head and onto paper. The "Costume" of Confidence: Michelle opens up about her early career struggles in Japan, where she felt like she had to wear a "Type A costume" to belong, and the shock to her identity when she realized she couldn't be a "golden child" on day one.The Inner Voice vs. The Verdict: A breakdown of how to identify your inner critic—Michelle's looked like a "tactical older male pilot"—and why recognizing the source of that voice takes away its power.MACE: The Call Sign Story: The vulnerable story behind Michelle's call sign (Mock At Circle Entry) and how a near-catastrophic mistake involving 9 G-forces became her ultimate badge of honor.Call Sign Culture & Safety: Why having a nickname based on a mistake is actually a tool for psychological safety, encouraging a "debrief culture" where even the highest-ranking leaders openly admit their errors.Inverting Your Perspective: A look at Michelle's book, The Flip Side, and how to use the "action creates confidence" loop to navigate moments where "the shit hits the fan."If you're waiting to "feel ready" before chasing your biggest dreams, this episode is the reality check you need to start taking action in the presence of doubt.

Join Jim and Greg for three stories of congressional chaos on the Thursday 3 Martini Lunch, as they break down the indictment of a Florida Democrat, the allegations facing a Florida Republican, and a shocking case of a House staffer accused of staging a hate crimeFirst, they examine the federal indictment of Florida Democrat Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who is accused of pocketing $5 million in federal Covid-19 disaster assistance and allegedly funneling some of the money into her congressional campaign. The congresswoman gets the presumption of innocence but this evidence looks pretty clear.Next, they detail the serious accusations leveled against Florida GOP Rep. Cory Mills, including alleged mistreatment and threats toward women, improper involvement in federal contracting, and even claims of stolen valor tied to his Army service. Mills denies all of the allegations and says he can prove he's not guilty. Fellow Republican Rep. Nancy Mace is leading the charge against Mills and wants him censured. Finally, Jim and Greg dig into the disturbing case of a staffer for New Jersey Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew. Prosecutors say she falsely reported being the victim of a hate crime by people who hate President Trump and her boss. Evidence shows she even paid to have someone significantly scar her body in order to make the scam more believable. Please visit our great sponsors:Cancel unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster with Rocket Money at https://RocketMoney.com/MARTINI Give your liver the support it deserves with Dose Daily. Michelle "Mace" Curran is a former Thunderbird fighter pilot, author, keynote speaker, and entrepreneur dedicated to empowering others to rise above self-doubt and tackle imposter syndrome head-on. Having flown elite missions and taken on leadership roles within some of the Air Force's most demanding teams, Michelle now leverages her experience to inspire audiences across the country. Through her transition from high-performing military aviator to entrepreneur and thought leader, she's passionate about helping others find their own “because,” lead with trust, and push through fear to leave a real legacy. Michelle's story is one of courage, resilience, and authentic leadership—on and off the runway. Takeaways: Imposter syndrome is universal—even experienced leaders deal with it, and the first step to overcoming it is simply acknowledging it and talking about it openly. Building a high-performing team starts with trust and psychological safety, not just traditional authority—leaders who model vulnerability and accountability foster the strongest cultures. Facing your fears and making progress doesn't require massive leaps; start taking “small, bold choices” to move toward your goals and let your confidence grow one step at a time. Sound Bites: "The number of experienced leaders who come up after my keynotes and say, 'I feel imposter syndrome every single day'—it's more common than you think." "Trust isn't just a military thing; it's the foundation of every high-performing team. When errors aren't hidden, they're learned from immediately." "Naming your inner critic gives you power over it—it's about recognizing when that voice shows up…and choosing not to listen." In February, South Carolina US House of Representative, Nancy Mace gave a "scorched earth" speech on the house floor. In the speech she accused several men of serious crimes, including rape, physical abuse and sex trafficking. None of the men Mace accused have been charged with any of the crimes she accused them of and all have denied her allegations. This episode brings you the latest filings and responses from some of the parties. In this episode an important ruling by the judge and an arrest has been made. Five previous Impact episodes have been about her February speech. August 29th episode was about an important ruling by the judge and an arrest was made. Join Jim and Greg for the Monday 3 Martini Lunch as they dissect a brutal ad to close out the New Jersey governor's race, college students strongly preferring socialism to capitalism, and more drama from South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace as she runs for governor.First, they dissect Republican Jack Ciattarelli's brutal closing ad in the New Jersey governor's race, which spotlights Democrat Mikie Sherrill struggling to name a single legislative priority. Ciattarelli came much closer than expected in 2021. Can he pull off the win tomorrow?Next, they react to a disturbing new poll showing that 67 percent of college students have a positive or neutral view of socialism, while only 40 percent feel the same about capitalism. Jim offers an explanation as to why so many young lefties blame the system for their frustrations. It must be the system because it can't be a consequence of their own choices, right? Finally, they groan as Nancy Mace stirs up more controversy by allegedly berating two airport police officers for not meeting her at the curb to escort her to her gate. Mace is great at attracting attention. But as she runs for governor, are South Carolina voters really going to vote for all of her personal drama to be on regular display in the highest office in the state? Please visit our great sponsors:Give your liver the support it deserves with Dose Daily. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have a lot to cover before the release of Murdaugh: Death in the Family, which premieres Oct. 15 on Hulu and Disney+. And we're equally excited for the launch of our Official Podcast, also premiering on Hulu and Disney+, with extended audio episodes on all audio platforms! Last week, (4:30) Houston's alleged wife and baby murderer Lee Gilley filed a motion to… go home to South Carolina for Thanksgiving? Excuse me, sir? One year after he was charged with killing Christa Bauer and her unborn baby, Gilley is putting his mama's boy arrogance on full display. Also on the show (8:30) Congresswoman Nancy Mace exposes South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's horrible record prosecuting child sexual abuse materials cases and demands an explanation. The two are running against each other in the GOP primary for governor and Mace is pulling no punches in the fight to expose the broken justice system Wilson has overseen for 14 years. Plus, (26:50) new video is released in #SquiresgateGate showing more of off-duty Deputy Billy Squires' unhinged behavior in his Hilton Head Island neighborhood as he and his sheriff's posse harassed local teenage boys. How does this case keep getting worse? And who does (33:50) Beaufort County Sheriff PJ Tanner think he's fooling? Not us… So much to cover, so let's dive in!
