In this episode, I sit down with Josh Jespersen. Josh is the deputy director of operations at the Silverton Avalanche School, an IFMGA guide, and a former Navy Seal. We talk about his experience transitioning to civilian life, and how adventures in the mountains helped create perspective and purpose. Josh climbed and skied all of Colorado's 54 14ers in a record-breaking duration of 138 days, and we discuss how he worked to manage risk with such an objective-driven goal. He is the founder and president of Veteran's Outdoor Advocacy Group, an organization that works to enable access to outdoor adjunct therapies for all Veterans in need. We chat about why this is so important, and how the snow, avalanche, and guiding communities can get involved. We hope you enjoy our conversation. There is no clear way to cope with death and grief. Moving forward is often heartbreaking, baffling, and uncertain. So, how do we best honor those we’ve lost? When he was 12-years-old, Navy Seal and backcountry snowboarder Josh Jespersen tragically lost his father. Confused and angry, Josh drifted in school and got into legal trouble. He joined the Navy Seals, where death was a constant. Josh would drink to celebrate the life of his fallen friends, but this led to more legal trouble, more confusion, more anger. Ultimately, Josh realized that the best way to honor the dead was to embark on an outdoor adventure that would amplify their memory. He realized he had to live for those he had lost.

Josh Jespersen's entrance into the military wasn't exactly conventional. But then again, there really isn't much about Josh that is "conventional." And he's just about the nicest & decent human being you'll ever meet, too! Once in the military, Josh quickly earned the Trident of a Navy SEAL & went on to honorably serve several years as a SEAL, surviving combat tours in Iraq & Afghanistan. After leaving the Navy he co-founded Mission Memorial Day - an organization that has set out to bring back the true meaning & recognition to Memorial Day by serving "not only those who made it back from the battle field, but also those who didn't." Mission Memorial Day (MMD) honors those who never made it home from war by encouraging decoration of monuments or servicemembers' graves, or engaging in a physically demanding activity or small expedition. Aside from co-founding MMD, Josh also holds the speed record for climbing & snowboarding down all of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks in just 138 days - a record previously held by a professional big mountain skier. In a nutshell, Josh is the epitome of the silent professional - he's truly a warrior & inspirational dude, & we are honored to have him on the show! Josh couldn't get enough of hangin' with the cool kids on Warrior Mindset podcast, so we had to fire up round two. Josh Jespersen holds the world record for climbing AND snowboarding down all of Colorado’s 14,000-foot mountains. It was the culmination of a 138-day effort to skin up and snowboard down all 54 in the state. And to do it faster than anyone in history. In doing so, the unimposing 30-year-old contract security worker snagged the fastest known time record from big-mountain skier Chris Davenport. When Davenport completed the same journey in 2007, in 362 days. Jespersen's mission is not breaking world records. It's continuing to make a difference in the world. Jespersen is the founder of Mission Memorial Day. In their continuing mission to return Memorial Day to its original meaning, they have carried the names of the fallen on the flags to the top of Denali, the tallest peak in North America, and five other peaks. Hope you enjoy!! _____________________ This episode is brought to you by StrikeForce Energy. An energy drink packet that goes with water or your favorite beverage. Sometimes you just have to ride a big wheel in a combat operation. That’s exactly what Josh Jespersen did one late evening in Baghdad, Iraq as a Navy SEAL. His former and currently retired platoon chief just learned of this speed racing adventure a couple of weeks ago, so Warrior Mindset podcast needed to get the full story. Josh Jespersen holds the world record for climbing AND snowboarding down all 54 of Colorado's 14 thousand foot mountains in only 138 days! Jespersen is the founder of Mission Memorial Day. In their continuing mission to return Memorial Day to its original meaning, they have carried the names of the fallen on the flags to the top of Denali, the tallest peak in North America, and five other peaks. This year the team proudly marched the flags along the original Bataan Death March route in the Philippines to pay tribute to the WWII veterans who gave their lives for our freedom on Memorial Day. They recreated the Bataan Death March by marching the 66 miles that the 76,000 prisoners of war had to endure under extreme conditions 75 years ago. They ate half military rations, drank limited amounts of water, and slept on the ground. --------------------------- Thanks to StrikeForce Energy This is a small energy filled packet.
