Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.29.534707v1?rss=1 Authors: Henriques, R. N., Ianus, A., Novello, L., Jovicich, J., Jespersen, S., Shemesh, N. Abstract: Mar[c]enko-Pastur (MP) PCA denoising is emerging as an effective means for noise suppression in MRI acquisitions with redundant dimensions. However, MP-PCA performance is severely compromised by spatially correlated noise -- an issue typically affecting most modern MRI acquisitions -- almost to the point of returning the original images with little or no noise removal. In this study, we develop and apply two new strategies that enable efficient and robust denoising even in the presence of severe spatial correlations. This is achieved by measuring a-priori information about the noise variance and combing these estimates with PCA denoising thresholding concepts. The two denoising strategies developed here are: 1) General PCA (GPCA) denoising that uses a-priori noise variance estimates without assuming specific noise distributions; and 2) Threshold PCA (TPCA) denoising which removes noise components with a threshold computed from a-priori estimated noise variance to determine the upper bound of the MP distribution. These strategies were tested in simulations with known ground truth and applied for denoising diffusion MRI data acquired using pre-clinical (16.4T) and clinical (3T) MRI scanners. In synthetic phantoms, MP-PCA failed to denoise spatially correlated data, while GPCA and TPCA correctly classified all signal/noise components. In cases where the noise variance was not accurately estimated (as can be the case in many practical scenarios), TPCA still provides excellent denoising performance. Our experiments in pre-clinical diffusion data with highly corrupted by spatial correlated noise revealed that both GPCA and TPCA robustly denoised the data while MP-PCA denoising failed. In in vivo diffusion MRI data acquired on a clinical scanner in healthy subjects, MP-PCA weakly removed noised, while TPCA was found to have the best performance, likely due to misestimations of the noise variance. Thus, our work shows that these novel denoising approaches can strongly benefit future pre-clinical and clinical MRI applications. Copy rights belong to original authors. Lone Jespersen, Ph.D., Founder and Principal of food safety culture consultancy Cultivate, has dedicated the last 15 years of her life to bettering food manufacturing operations and studying how culture affects food safety performance. She holds a Ph.D. in Culture Enabled Food Safety and has created a network of worldwide collaborators within the food supply chain. After 11 years with Maple Leaf Foods—including an uphill battle to regain consumer trust following the 2008 tragedy that killed 23 people—Dr. Jespersen's life purpose shifted. At the time, she was in charge of food safety and operations learning strategies. After much introspection, questioning, and scrutiny, Dr. Jespersen led the relaunch and execution of Maple Leaf Foods' food safety and operations learning strategies, transforming the company's food safety culture from the inside out. Carol Wallace, Ph.D., is a Professor of Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS), Co-Director of the Nutritional Sciences and Applied Food Safety Studies Group, and the Research Lead for the School of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in the UK. Dr. Wallace holds a Ph.D. from UCLan and a B.Sc. degree in Microbiology from the University of Glasgow. Her research interests include food safety performance from farm to fork, in particular Hazards Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system effectiveness and food safety culture, causal factors in food outbreaks and incidents, and controlling food safety risk in business and the home. Dr. Wallace was instrumental in setting up the Salus Food Safety Culture Science Group, an academic network to explore and share knowledge about the emergent food safety culture field, in 2015, and she serves as its current Chair. She regularly presents at and organizes conference symposia in the areas of food safety management and culture. Dr. Wallace is also widely published in the field of food safety and is an author and co-author of several best-selling textbooks guiding industry on HACCP and FSMS. In this episode of Food Safety Matters, we speak with Dr. Jespersen and Dr. Wallace [34:58] about: Why the prevalent mindset around food safety and HACCP within organizations leads to 37 percent of frontline employees following protocols improperly, and how change management can be leveraged to individualize food safety The definition of “nudging,” its role in incrementally improving an organization's food safety culture over time, and examples of nudging in action How collaboration between academics and industry can elevate the concept of food safety culture through scientific validation Strategies for achieving buy-in from leadership regarding food safety culture The importance of enhancing visibility, creating accountability, and encouraging an atmosphere of teamwork in a food business when nudging improvements to food safety culture, and how such goals can be achieved How a company can begin influencing and monitoring frontline employee behavior to improve food safety culture by tapping into managers How companies can implement and emphasize reward and recognition to improve food safety culture The importance of promoting a culture that transcends the technical aspects of food safety. This episode of Food Safety Matters also features an interview [24:34] with Zach Ducheneaux, who was appointed Administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency (USDA's FSA) in February 2021. Zach discusses FSA's Food Safety Certification for Specialty Crops Program, providing specifics on assistance eligibility, types of expenses covered by reimbursements, and recommended food safety certifications. Happy New Year! Chad Jespersen retired from the United States Air Force in June 2021. With the COVID 19 pandemic ramping up as he was preparing to transition out of the service, he was forced to find innovative ways to network, which he did, including extensive use of Zoom and other online tools to meet people who could help him with his goal to find his next career. What was clear from our conversations, both this one and another that we had offline, Chad is a person who not only talks about the importance of networking, but practices it. Familiar with the numerous programs such as Hiring Our Heroes, Candorful, Fourblock, and American Corporate Partners, Chad is a walking encyclopedia. Afsnit 407.
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, June 16. Thursday's weather will be sunny and just a little bit cooler, mostly in the low temperature. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny with a high near 91 degrees. On Thursday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 63 degrees. The weather will cool more over the next three days, before spiking back up starting on Sunday. Everything is getting more expensive these days, so why not add tuition to the mix. Base tuition for resident undergraduates attending one of Iowa's three public universities will increase 4.25 percent in the fall under a proposal the Board of Regents will first consider Wednesday. A final vote on the rate proposal is scheduled for July — the month before affected students arrive at their respective campuses for the 2022-23 academic year. If approved, the unde rgraduate in-state tuition increases will be $355 more for a year at Iowa, $345 at Iowa State, and $331 at UNI. Both ISU and UNI also aim to impose a 4.25-percent tuition increase on their out-of-state undergraduates, increasing non-resident tuition by $1,026 a year at ISU and by $785 at UNI. The UI intends to impose a smaller 1.17-percent tuition increase on its non-resident undergrads, mirroring its in-state $355 increase on residents. A City High administrator who students and parents said opened a school door for a senior prank that turned into vandalism has resigned from that job and now will teach at Iowa City West High School. “Scott Jespersen shared his intent to step away from his assistant principal position at City High School,” Principal John Bacon wrote in an email to parents Wednesday. The Iowa City Community School District board of directors accepted Jespersen's resignation Tuesday night, Bacon said. City High parents https://www.thegazette.com/k/iowa-city-high-vandalized-days-before-graduation/ (told The Gazette last month) Jespersen let some students into the building late May 22 to hang balloons and streamers ahead of the school's graduation ceremony, but other students came in and damaged the building by spray painting walls, pouring syrup on items and cutting up photos, among other actions. Jespersen and the Iowa City School District have not commented to the Gazette when asked about the incident. Iowa became the last state in the nation to ban elder abuse on Wednesday. Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law Shttps://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislation/BillBook?ga=89&ba=SF522 (enate File 522,) which sets criminal charges — ranging from misdemeanors to felonies punishable by up to 25 years in prison, based on the severity of the crime — for abusing, assaulting or financially exploiting a person age 60 or older. Reynolds signed the bill during a ceremony at Highland Ridge Senior Living Community in Williamsburg. After years of advocates pressing for action, the bill passed unanimously in both legislative chambers in the 2022 session. Previously, Iowa was the only state in the nation where elder abuse was not a crime. Iowa law currently includes definitions of elder abuse but does not include criminal penalties. Because it has not been a crime in Iowa, accurate data about the prevalence of elder abuse in the state is hard to ascertain, advocates said. However, Iowa has seen a sharp increase in reports of abuse or neglect of dependent adults age 18 or older, including older Iowans.

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail. On the pod today we have Ryan Jespersen with us and the host of his own live, daily streaming show, Real Talk. He's a phenomenon out in Alberta with a huge and devoted listenership. And the best part is, Ryan built it from the ground up. He figured out the technology, hired staff, secured sponsors and created his own promotions after getting fired from his previous gig at CHED. Which all sounds pretty darned familiar to me.Today we're going to talk about… What else? Jason Kenney stepping down. Rachel Notley maybe stepping up. The potential future for the PC party out in Alberta. And the general state of the province and Albertans as they look toward the future. And I'm sure we'll throw in a couple of other things along the way.Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast.
