Six years ago we had John Newman on GeriPal to talk about Geroscience (Song choice Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen, perfect selection).  John explained the basics of geroscience, what is it, what are the key theories in geroscience, what is senescence, why people who provide clinical care for older adults should care about geroscience, and potential therapeutics like metformin and rapamycin. Today we bring on three rising stars in Geroscience, Brian Andonian, Sara LaHue, Joe Hippensteel, to talk about one of the key pillars of Geroscience: inflammaging.  We use this terrific paper they published in Geroscience as a springboard.  We discuss: What is inflammaging? Chronic progressive low grade inflammation with aging. I try to get one of them to stake a claim that inflammaging should be the organizing principle of geroscience How does inflammaging operate in rheumatologic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (Brian), neurologic conditions like traumatic brain injury  (Sara), and critical illness (Joe).  We talk about Post-ICU Syndrome (PICS) and relate inflammaging to our prior podcast with Wes Ely about his book Every Deep Drawn Breath.  We also talk about how inflammaging is not just a factor in chronic conditions like diabetes or inflammatory bowel disease, which make intuitive sense, but also in acute conditions, like sepsis or traumatic brain injury in older adults. The state of the science on clinical and research tests for inflammaging - ready for prime time?  What is the state of the science for therapeutics? Why should some anti-inflammatory therapeutics make us nervous in frail older adults? Inflammation developed evolutionarily for a reason. E.g. tthink of drugs that wipe out the immune system. Just three weeks ago, the team was ranked and riding high. Now, their NCAA tournament chances have plummeted to a mere 3%. It's a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in college basketball. Despite the on-court struggles, there's a silver lining for Bearcats fans. Shon Abaev, the program's first McDonald's All-American signee since Lance Stephenson, was officially named to the prestigious team. This marks a significant recruiting win for Cincinnati, as Abaev is considered one of the top prospects in the country. The current state of the team, however, is far from ideal. The Bearcats have looked increasingly worse with each game, regardless of venue or opponent's defensive strategy. The lack of answers on the court is concerning, especially considering the talent on the roster. One glaring issue is the isolation-heavy play of Jizzle James. While talented, James rarely scores off assisted baskets, limiting the team's offensive flow. This style of play stands in stark contrast to the successful offenses of past Cincinnati teams under Wes Miller, which featured players like Landers Nolley who could actually shoot. Miller's coaching has come under scrutiny. With a 6-32 record in Quad 1 games and an 0-10 record in Quad 1 home games, the results speak for themselves. The team's regression from last season is particularly alarming, with multiple 20+ point losses already this year. The upcoming game against Utah offers a potential reprieve, but it's clear that a single win won't solve the underlying issues. The Bearcats need a significant turnaround to salvage their season and restore faith in Miller's leadership. Looking ahead, Abaev's arrival next season provides hope. Today's episode Part 10 is the tenth episode in this miniseries  and and concludes what else may have happened that weekend with Oswald and then chronicles  the remaining phone calls that happened on October 1st and October 3rd...which  were detected by the CIA's surveillance system and which notify the Mexico City CIA Station that its a man named Oswald who is seeking a visa to Cuba and to Russia. And a man who had spoken to Russian KGB agent Kostikov who was working at the consulate. Valery Kostikov was the famed KGB agent who was also a member of the 13th Department, a KGB division responsible for sabotage and assassinations. In Part 10, we pick the action back up on Saturday after Oswald completed his visit to the Russian Embassy, made in one last ditch effort to secure a Russian visa.  Oswald befriends a group of students at the nearby University in an attempt to influence the Cuban consulate and gain his Cuban visa. When that doesn't end well, in despair, he buys a ticket home to Dallas.  There were a few other activities that weekend that Oswald purportedly engaged in including some more mundane touristy things like attending a bull fight and some meatier allegations such as the one that he engaged with a group of Cubans and that he also met with Carlos Lechuga.
