Episode 49 - Flow Country Traverse with Dan Ashwood

Go Mountain Goats

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2025 75:47

Dan Ashwood (Dash) talks me through the Flow Country Traverse which he pioneered in April 2025. This 100km route started at Berriedale on the Caithness coast and headed west into the Flow Country: one of the largest blanket bog systems in the world. Dan has become a bog expert having worked in peatland restoration projects with Caledonian Climate for the past several years. Spending more time in peatland led him to appreciate these biodiverse areas both for their ecological importance in terms of carbon sinks, and also their abundant plant and animal life. Traversing the Scaraben group he then moved into much less visited terrain with the Knockfin Heights area of complex peatland. Finding it drier than expected, he continued to the Ben Griams, and then Garvault Hotel for a welcome cuppa. The route continued over Beinn a' Mhadaidh to Syre Lodge, Beinn Stumanadh, and Loch na Moine, before the final section on Ben Loyal and Ben Hope. Helped at road crossings and at the finish by his friend Chris Wilkinson, the traverse took in bogland in a wide variety of conditions, ranging from degraded to thriving. In 2024 the Flow Country was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.Dan chose to finish the traverse with Ben Hope partly as a symbolism of the hope he feels for the future of this peatland area, its abundant wildlife, wide open wilderness, and importance in carbon capture. See Dan's full write up here: https://caledonianclimate.com/news/2025/04/16/running-100km-across-the-flow-country/Note: I am informed that 'flow' is a Scots word for bog or morass, possibly from the Norse / Icelandic word floi. Stargates are the theoretical transfer of matter or energy from one point to another without traversing the physical space between them. It is a common subject in science fiction and fantasy literature, film, video games, and television. In some situations, teleporting is presented as time traveling across space. But what if these portals aren't just creations of human imagination and were used in ancient times by the Native Americans? Traverse the desert planes with Joel as he digs through tales of deities of antiquity and their portals from the heavens to earth. He looks at the Kachina of Hopi lore and if they are bringing with them a fifth world after the apocalypse. He also looks at the paper Vine Deloria Jr. and Richard Stoffle wrote for the Department of Defense in June 1998 entitled, "Native American Sacred Sites and the Department of Defense" and its connection to active Stargates. Finally, Joel discovers "Searching for Arizona's Buried Treasures" by Ron Quinn and a strange story a local Native American told him of a "Doorway To The Gods" that seemingly swallowed people up and they never returned.

Chevy's Equinox entered its fourth generation for the 2025 model year and moved away from the car-like styling of the previous generations. Instead, Chevrolet pushed the latest Equinox in the same truck-and-SUV-inspired direction as the rest of its latest Traverse. This more upright styling gives the latest Equinox a more aggressive direction. The latest Equinox also joins the fleet of GM vehicles to add a massive screen to its cockpit, which also anchors the interior. Despite the overhauls inside and out, Chevrolet stuck with the 1.5-liter turbocharged I4 from the previous generation, which feeds either a continuously variable transmission in front-wheel-drive models or an eight-speed automatic transmission when equipped with an all-wheel-drive system. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2025 Chevy Equinox and puts it through its paces. Carone takes you on a guided tour of the 2025 Equinox and highlights some of his favorite features. Later, Carone takes you on a live drive review of the latest Equinox. Adding to these segments, Carone chats with host Wesley Wren about the Equinox, the competition, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the '25 Chevy Equinox special.

Episode 161In today's guest episode I will be discussing Shakespeare's characterisations of the lower classes and looking at the role they play with Stephen Unwin, who's book ‘Poor Naked Wretches' explores the variety of working people in Shakespeare's plays as well as a vast range of cultural sources from which they were drawn and argues that the robust realism of these characters makes them so much more than mere Comic Relief. Stephen Unwin is an award-winning British theatre and opera director. He has directed almost 100 professional productions and worked with many well-established actors and singers, as well as developing the careers of many younger ones. He studied at the University of Cambridge. In the 1980s Stephen worked at the Almeida Theatre, London, the Traverse in Edinburgh, in repertoire theatre and at the National Theatre Studio. In 1993, he founded English Touring Theatre, for whom he directed more than 30 productions of classical and new plays, many of which transferred to London. In 2008, he became Artistic Director of the new Rose Theatre in Kingston, which he ran until January 2014. He has worked extensively at the Theatre Royal Bath and has directed more than 20 operas. Ten of his productions have been seen in the West End.Stephen has taught in conservatoires and universities in Britain and America and written 10 books on theatre and drama, including ‘Poor Naked Wretches'. He has also written five original plays: ‘All Our Children' was premiered at Jermyn Street Theatre in 2017 and staged in New York in 2019, and ‘Laughing Boy' opened at Jermyn Street in 2024 and also played at the Theatre Royal Bath. Stephen is a campaigner for the rights and dignities of learning-disabled people and ‘Beautiful Lives: How We Got Learning Disabilities So Wrong', is published by Wildfire Book in June 2025.This is only a shortened version of Stephen's achievements and I would encourage you to visit his website for much more information.
