#51: Former Navy SEAL, Joshua Morton - Morton/Method Certification

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 11, 2018 62:34

Canine Tactical’s second layer certification (Morton/Method) concept evolved from my experiences as the first NSWGRP 2 K9 operator, experienced in high stress and high-risk situations: It is important to have a canine with a mindset to work due to the Hunt as opposed to the Reward; It is important that the canine focuses on each task as it intertwines into another; It is important for handlers to be able to make quick decisions under pressure while stressed and/or tired while maintaining control of their canine. This certification takes the equipment out of the scenario allowing the true essence of the canine’s reaction to the bite. This certification takes place in an area not known or familiar to the handler or to the canine, and the suspect used is also not familiar to the canine. This second layer certification takes the control out of the environment (where anything goes) and the true points of performance are graded which sets the foundation for real world deployments. Code Name: Johnny Walker embodies everything that the Warrior Mindset Podcast was built upon. Johnny Walker was the Navy SEALs’ most trusted translator. A man who is credited with saving countless American lives and has become a legend in the special-ops community. Co-host Brad Nagel and Johnny worked together many times. This episode we hear how Brad was with Johnny on Johnny's first operation together. From then on, Johnny was on a path that was worth writing a book on. The Co-Author of the film American Sniper, Jim DeFelice, co-wrote Johnny's memoir titled "Code Name: Johnny Walker."  A film is currently being directed by the Director of the cinematic hit "Straight of Out Compton" Alan Wenkus. Johnny and Brad clearly have a bond that can never be understood unless you were with them in the theater of war. It's a bond that they call brotherhood, but I think it's more than that, there just isn't a better word for it. It makes me wonder what types of things we miss out on as human beings when two guys wish they were back in war together. Johnnys book tells those stories from a man with what seems like the most unlikely chances to become what he is today. It's an example that no matter what odds you face, overcome the adversity, love your friends and family, and be hell on earth for the people who want to take that away from you.   Thank you as always to all of our sponsors. Unfortunately, school shootings have become all too common. The news media and other "intellectuals" who have never shot a gun can debate as to why they do. In 7 minutes, 17 innocent children were killed. I point this out to hit home how important every second is in these situations. The great thing about the Active Shooter K9™ is that it's nonpolitical. Its a solution to "meet in the middle." As you'll hear in the podcast, the Active Shooter K9™ is a part of the school and community. In many cases just having a dog in a home will deter most intruders looking to cause harm. Dogs have a therapeutic quality to them. Ryan regained composure with his face and arms burned, and witnessed his fellow team members suffer devastating burn and blast injuries. While Ryan’s burns were only first and second degree, his teammates suffered lifelong injuries. After completing his service, Ryan moved to Dallas, and in April of 2011, Ryan had the privilege of meeting a retired Army Ranger officer who suffered significant burn injuries, and Ryan was inspired and humbled by his display of strength and courage, despite his debilitating scarring. Ryan was discouraged that this Ranger, and others like him, were not benefitting from the progressive treatment of burns in the same way that amputees benefit from incredible advancements in prosthetics. Searching for better answers, Ryan sought out physicians, medical professionals, civilian burn survivors as well as fire-fighters and paramedics, seeking to understand how burn treatment could be improved. In 2012, Ryan established Sons of the Flag to help burn survivors and their families find the help and medical attention that they deserve. He is also the founder of the Bird’s Eye View Project, addressing the extreme needs of Veterans and First Responders through extreme sports. And, he is the author of Sons of the Flag: Real Accounts from the last 100 years of American Service. ------------------------------------------------ This episode is brought to you by StrikeForce Energy. The one thing that is consistent with Canine Tactical is that they always work towards creating an elite working canine in there breeding program. Sometimes, Mother Nature doesn't cooperate or is inconsistent. It takes a lot of time and effort to properly care for, house, feed, raise, and train each pup to adulthood, only to discover not all of them meet the qualifications for an effective Police/Military Working Canine or a home/executive protection canine. Canine Tactical's breeding program is built on achieving a standardization of a Working Canine - a MIL-SPEC Canine. A standardization of a canine that has the traits that Canine Tactical desires; Hunt, Defense, and Fight. There are other traits that encompass an effective Working Canine, but these three are a top priority. After multiple breedings, Canine Tactical has yet to achieve stability in each canine. The stability found in Canine Eudoris® Actual, the top male canine is second to none.  A stable canine with these priority traits and characteristics make the learning and training process for the handler who doesn't fully understand the essence of handler skills, achievable, every time, all the time. (layman’s terms: "the dog makes you look good") Canine Tactical is the first kennel to partner up with the world leaders in cloning technology (ViaGen Pets) to produce cloned puppies from there most proven genotypes. The Eudoris®, Apache and Rook brands stand for excellence in the field and these K9s are developed in a unique, customized program that is specifically tailored to prepare dogs with this exact genetic makeup. Canine Tactical is committed to incorporating proven science into our program to achieve the highest quality results possible. 3 principles of the Morton  Method - Officer first mindset- What makes a great K9 team is an officer.  An officer still needs to maintain his individual shooter skills.  How the situation is approached is paramount and the K9 will follow suit. - Take away the controlled environment in training- The Morton/Method does not restrict the handler and the dog's thinking or actions in an unrealistic way.  Allowing him to use his training as well as leaving him the ability to improvise when needed. - Remove the conflict in training- Take the "Alpha male" type out of the sight picture.  Respect the K9 and learn to work around the personality of the K9 and not the trainers' ideology. Morton/Method concept introduces the canines to use their nose from day one, no matter the age and no visual stimulus is applied. So he started the Clones in detection/hunting for the ball. The Morton/Method does not utilize the food reward concept. While the Clones were in the room he noticed they were all in hunt mode with no end in sight, nose to the ground (nonstop). They were sniffing seams of doors, running in and out of dark areas, and up and down stairs. They didn’t know what they were hunting, but they needed to hunt.

Dr. Tom Hanson has delivered his expertise to overcome and conquer fear with some of the greatest athletes and organizations of all time. He's currently the CEO of Heads Up Performance with his wife Birgit Hanson. In their cornerstone approach, they explain, "We co-create a strategic leadership solution blending paradigm-shifting and skill-building workshops, coaching conversations to apply new skills to specific management and sales challenges, team meeting facilitation to reinforce the new way of operating, and senior executive strategic coaching to resolve higher level business issues." His performance coaching career in the MLB started in 1999 when he worked with the Texas Rangers until the year 2000.  In 2001 he was hired to work full time for the New York Yankees as the Performance Enhancement Director. While working with the Yankees he worked around some of the greatest baseball players of all time. Including Roger Clemens, Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera. His Performance Enhancement services in Major League Baseball also include the Anaheim Angels and the Minnesota Twins. In addition to his impressive resume, Dr. Hanson authored the book "Play Big, Mental Toughness Secrets That Take Baseball Players To The Next Level." He also co-authored the book "Heads-Up Baseball: Playing the Game One Pitch at a Time" which has been quoted by many MLB players including Aaron Judge for the New York Yankees who said he's read the book "again and again."  Dr. Hanson co-authored the sequel with another leading sports psychologist Ken Ravizza titled "Heads Up Baseball 2.0" Judge also added this sequel to his library according to his interview with ESPN. Dr. Hanson was an integral part of my collegiate baseball career. In 2011 I was overcome with a confusing and mentally tortuous performance ailment called the "YIPS." One week I was pitching at The University of Mississippi in front of a few thousand people and then shortly after I couldn't throw the ball 30ft to my throwing partner. Throwing a baseball was something I had done thousands of times since I could remember. It's what allowed me to earn a scholarship to play division 1 baseball. Throwing a baseball introduced me to the closest friends in my life. Then one day throwing a ball was my nightmare. Luckily, a light was shined on this embarrassing nightmare, and his name was Dr. Tom Hanson. Oddly enough I was relieved to hear that I wasn't the first to get this confusing thing called the YIPS. I was relieved to know it had a name. It's something about putting a label on to something. It helps us accept or understand whatever is inflicting us. After a "getting to know each other" conversation Dr. Hanson explained that he was going to use a technique called "tapping." The action of literally tapping on very specific parts of the body while breathing and using mental imagery. Within 5-6 weeks I was able to conquer fear and get back to throwing a baseball without ever really understanding how or why this tapping technique worked. My science background was fascinated, but my athletic background didn't care. It worked. I will be forever grateful that Dr. Hanson gave me back the sport of baseball that introduced me to the most important people in my life, and that has made me who I am today. Show highlights - Discussion of the his "tapping" technique to overcome YIPS and possibly many more extreme anxiety issues afflicting an individual. - Cutting through the negative first in order to replace with the positive. - His experience working with Derek Jeter. - What is the YIPS? - My personal experience working with Dr. Tom Hanson in college.   This episode is brought to you by StrikeForce Energy. "Don't be afraid to struggle. You will become stronger the older you get. Struggle creates something unique and different." - Terry Cook   Being uncomfortable and failing are two things most people try to avoid but Terry Cook embraced this zone. This seems to be an ongoing theme among successful people. Life seems to happen when you play in that zone between being comfortable and uncomfortable. If you're constantly in a state of comfort then no growth occurs. If you're constantly in a state of discomfort then you die at 50 years old of a heart attack. Terry, originally from Spencer, Iowa, wrestled at the University of Nebraska and ranked as high as fourth in the country. He went on to  work in the fundraising industry for 10 years. If you don't know Terry, he's also a pretty damn good golfer. So I'll use golf to paint a picture of this analogy. All golfers shank their shots or miss easy putts but the good golfers do it less. They do it less because they learn from their mistakes. Just like anything in life. Mistakes and struggles HAVE to be embraced because they WILL happen. As Terry points out in the podcast, "Nothing is wrong with suffering a little bit, and earning what you get." Terry was speaking specifically about raising kids to be happy and successful. This is an important point that doesn't get talked about enough. A person cannot appreciate the good if they have not experienced the bad. Ironically, the original definition of "passion" is defined: "The willingness to endure suffering." If your life is filled with actual passion, you will be willing to endure the suffering. You will be willing to fail because you concentrate on the bigger goal that YOU want to achieve. As they say, "A great thing given is never as good as a great thing earned." When you put your heart and soul into a venture it's understandable to feel like you deserve success. Although, just because you work hard at something doesn't mean you deserve anything. This leads to desperation, and desperation can lead to dangerous behavior. Failures and setbacks will occur at every step of the way, small and large. Take a step back and think about why it happened, and then think about how to change it. Because failure isn't fatal, but failing to change might be.
