Matt Smith grew up on Long Island and joined Army ROTC at the University of Delaware in 1989. Four years later, he was commissioned as an officer. Tom Young grew up on his family's farm in North Carolina. From a young age he was fascinated by his grandfather's stories of being part of a bomber crew during World War II. That helped to spark his interest in both flying and in service. Young served in the Maryland and West Virginia Air National Guard, serving as flight engineer for C-130 Hercules and C-5 Galaxy transport planes. Kelly Elmlinger was a three-sport athlete in high school. She excelled in cross country, basketball, and track. After considering military service, she decided to keep playing sports at the next level, but she quickly decided college was not for her. That's when she joined the Army and became a combat medic, eventually with the 82nd Airborne Division, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Later, she became a nurse and then a cancer patient herself. Yet even after losing a leg, Elmlinger persevered and represented the U.S. at the Paralympic Games just a few years later.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles Elmlinger shares how the 9/11 attacks changed the trajectory of her military service and how her combat medic training suddenly became much more real. Doug Bahrns knew he wanted to be a U.S. Marine Corps officer when he finished high school a couple of years before 9/11. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer. After going to officer's training at Quantico, Bahrns was assigned command of 3rd Platoon, Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines in 2003. By 2004 they were in Iraq, and a few months later they would be involved in some of the fiercest fighting of the war - the Second Battle of Fallujah.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Bahrns discusses the ramping up to the battle, how he got orders to get his men ready for the fight in the middle of the night, and what he went over in his mind just before the battle began.Bahrns describes the successful push to the mayor's complex, the vicious fighting to move out from there, and the brutal house-to-house fighting that followed. Clayton Hutmacher enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1978. Six years later he jumped at the chance to go to Army flight school and pursue a career in special operations. He would later see action in Panama, Desert Storm, and in both Iraq and Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Maj. Gen. In this second half of our interview with retired U.S. Navy SEAL Mark Greene, we will focus on Lt. Greene's deployments - first to Iraq and then to Afghanistan.And he discusses his work helping veterans transition from the military back into civilian life.Greene shares what sound was so common in Iraq that it served as an alarm clock just about every day. Kelly Elmlinger was a three-sport athlete in high school. She excelled in cross country, basketball, and track. After considering military service, she decided to keep playing sports at the next level, but she quickly decided college was not for her. That's when she joined the Army and became a combat medic, eventually with the 82nd Airborne Division, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Later, she became a nurse and then a cancer patient herself. Yet even after losing a leg, Elmlinger persevered and represented the U.S. at the Paralympic Games just a few years later.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Elmlinger shares how the 9/11 attacks changed the trajectory of her military service and how her combat medic training suddenly became much more real. She also describes her service in Afghanistan, meeting and connecting with the Afghan women, and what the Afghan men thought about her.Then she explains how different and how much harder the same job was in Iraq, why there was often little combat medics could do to help, and the painstaking efforts she and her teammates took to to find some personal effect to present to the families of every fallen service member.Elmlinger then recounts her decision to become a nurse and work with wounded veterans in San Antonio and how that work helped to prepare her to be a patient there as she battled cancer in her leg. And finally, she updates us on how she became an elite adaptive sports athlete - representing the U.S. at the 2021 Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo. And she'll do it again this summer in Paris!

Alex Harstrick, Founder and Managing Partner at J2 Ventures, leans into his experience from the Iraq/Afghanistan war to inform and fuel the next generation of technology and capabilities. The closeness to the problem makes you invaluable, but it is also the thing that can prevent others (especially the public) from seeing the value one is truly able to create. Through his time as a management consultant and intelligence officer, Alex was able to involve himself with entities like the National Security Defense Capital and KKR, that would ultimately allow him to better understand how dual-use applications can be a way for him to continue to Serve and create meaningful returns for investors. Alex believes that life is not just about measuring risk, but instead aligning your purpose with Teammates who you want to do the fun and hard things with. This week's episode features Ken Sample (Capt. USN retired). He spent a large portion of his life in service to others. Ken laughs as he tells how his drive to become a doctor very much came from his dear wife. Ken spent overwhelming time as a General Surgeon for the United States Navy. Some of this time was spent forward deployed and some of his time was stateside in places like Camp Lejeune. Ken also ran his own private practice in between reserve time and deployments. Surgeons like Ken are vital to the warfighting mission. In the Corps when a man is down on the field, we operate under a rule referred to as the “golden hour”. This means, that once self-aide, buddy-aide, and Corpsman-aide are conducted, if the Marine is wounded badly, we need him/her to a trauma unit in less than an hour. If we can accomplish this mission, the rule is that he/she will survive. There are of course exceptions to that rule. People like Ken Sample exist and operate in the gray... without these people, with these skills, our battlefield KIA numbers would not stay as low as they are. It was an honor and a pleasure to sit down with Ken and learn about a different side of war, the side of saving and giving new life to the National Treasures holding the line.

When college wasn't working out, Mike Sarraille decided to become a U.S. Marine when he became friends with a recon Marine and was impressed by his humble confidence. Saraille also become a recon Marine as well as a sniper. But a couple years later, after being encouraged to become an officer, he entered BUD/s training and became a U.S. Navy SEAL.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," LCDR Saraille shares his memories of serving with SEAL Team 3 in Iraq, including the brutl fight for Ramadi in 2005 and 2006. Master Sergeant Marc Arrington USMC (Retired) joins the show to talk about life. Marc is a brilliant mind and stoic in his thoughts and as kind-hearted as they come. Marc was instrumental in helping a veteran in crisis two years ago. He was new to the VFW and heard a pitch I gave to bring aid to an infantryman in need. Not knowing me well, he took a huge chance. But help came in waves after the initial talk. Marc continues to be involved in the VFW and the Veteran community.
