Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast. The wheelhouse of Totally Deep expands in this episode when Doug and Randy interview Mark Grotjahn, a noted American artist who also happens to backcountry ski. Or, maybe, for TDP purposes, we have a backcountry skier who happens to be an artist. No matter, Grothjahn brings a unique and welcome perspective to the ski scene that embodies his broad vision of seeing the world. Gagosian.com writes about his art, "Grotjahn combines gesture and geometry with abstraction and figuration in visually dynamic paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Each of his series reflects a range of art-historical influences and unfolds in almost obsessive permutations." You can learn more about Grotjahn and his art here. But the story doesn't end there. Grotjahn, a powder snow lover, also has a soft spot for DPS skis. More on that in a bit. Recently, Grtotjahn opened an exhibit titled Backcountry. "In Backcountry, he continues to draw inspiration from rural landscapes and his ski touring and fly-fishing adventures in the backcountry of western Colorado," writes Gagosian.com. Along with the exhibit, Cripple Creek Backcountry, Grotjahn, and DPS released a limited edition series of skis featuring Grotjahn's art on the topsheets: the new ski is known as the Mark Grotjahn DPS 50 Kitchens Ski. This also marks the release of a new DPS powder ski, the Kaizen 112.  On Episode 109 of the Totally Deep Podcast: Racecourse setting. The DPS/Grotjahn creation. Skinning vs Sorels: skinning wins. Backcountry first caught a glimpse of Will's prototype splitboard bindings in 2008. A brief writeup in the magazine that year was the precursor to inclusion in every Backcountry Gear Guide since.  While they lacked polish in the early days the bindings showed promise. And that first generation of Spark clamps would lay the foundation for that elusive “better mousetrap.” Word of Spark's bindings spread like wildfire in the close-knit backcountry snowboard community, and the company has grown every year since its garage-band inception. Spark is now synonymous with splitboarding, and its ascent has mirrored the progression and increase in popularity of the sport. Today, Spark R&D employs 120 people and operates 24/7 in the company's Bozeman, Montana facilities. They manufacture nearly every ingredient in their products, from baseplates to straps and highbacks.  Will tours us through the evolution of the company, and shares what it feels like to have the idols of his youth riding his setup. He speaks to his connection to the backcountry snowboarding community, and his 15-year pursuit of building a better backcountry snowboard binding. This episode is brought to you by Minus 33. Benedikt "Bene" Böhm, the CEO of Dynafit is a force of nature. Pushing into his mid-40s, the husband and father of three epitomizes life balance not by teetering near the fulcrum but by living near the extreme ends of the see-saw. He logs upwards of 30,000' of weekly vert, steers an international mountain products brand, and believes in full-value parenting. To do as Böhm does, which is aspirational, might require a reassessment and a full-time live-in assistant to infill the calendar — there's seemingly no downtime. His 24-hour cycle is more like a 48-72 hour jam-packed time expanse for lesser motivated mortals. Perhaps the only explanation for his stoke and inexhaustibility rests on the cusps of special relativity, where time slows as one approaches the speed of light. There's some exaggeration here, but you get the point; Böhm gets stuff done.       Under Böhm's leadership, Dynafit has seen its global reach expand and entrance into the more general mountain endurance markets, like trail and mountain running, and solidify its place in the ski touring segment. In the mountains, he has climbed and skied 8000m peaks in the high Himalayas, single push traversed across the Alps, scorched the skimo scene as part of the German national ski mo team, and generally helped define the modern concept of moving efficiently through the mountains. Although we overuse the term "light and fast" here at WildSnow, Böhm embodies that style.  Suppose you're in the German Alps outside Munich on a patrouille im morgengrauen (German for dawn patrol according to Google Translate) and a Lycra-clad speedster cloaked head to toe in Dynafit steamrolls by. As usual, they bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.   As Totally Deep finally notches episode 100, Doug and Randy  banter just a bit about the past and the totality that is Totally Deep. They also converse with Jack Kuenzle who recently blasted up and down Mt. Hood to establish a new fastest known time (FKT). Kuenzle gives the FKT lowdown and reveals, in scientific terms, why wearing underwear only and skimo gear was his ticket to ride. Note, Kuenzle's underwear choice is pretty ho-hum, Champion, which means this fast cat must be a man of the people. Kuenzle also provides insight into a training mission up Mt. Shasta, during which he snapped both skis. Kuenzle also holds the roundtrip FKT for Mt. Shasta. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.   As Totally Deep notches towards 100 episodes, we bring together two observers of the natural world and ski touring partners in Roman Dial and Alex Lee. Both are professors at Alaska Pacific University; Lee teaches philosophy while Dial has zeroed in on math and biology.  Lee has been featured on the podcast before. This is Dial's first go.  If you've done some basic research into Alaskan wilderness adventures, you're likely to have come across Dial's exploits. Dial remains a proto early-adopter considering how one pieces together moving from A to B to C when it entails the encyclopedia of groveling through Alaska's tangle of botany and mountains and hydrology. From packrafting to cycling, skiing, and skating (on ice skates) Dial imagined and realized moving across landscapes, sometimes elegantly, often bedraggled, and just in the knick of time. I learned on fastestknowntime.com that he stamps his performance metrics as OKTs (only known time) and LKTs (loneliest known time). The link above also includes Dial's adventure CV and does not include his voluminous academic work.  Dial is also a National Geographic Explorer and the author of The Adventurer's Son.   On episode 99 of Totally Deep, Dial and Lee discuss researching the natural world on skis, gear revelations, and finding a shared passion for sliding on snow More info about TDP at Totally Deep Podcast Blog on Cripplecreekbc.com or wildsnow.com. There's a range in America's most populous state that's hemmed in by desert and people. Each year, millions come to California's Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains to collectively attempt to climb Mt. Whitney or ogle Yosemite's Half Dome or ski at Mammoth or hike the John Muir Trail. In the spring of 2016, Adam Howard, Craig Dostie and John and Tyson Hausdoerffer came here for a different reason: To ski some of the famed Redline Traverse, first pioneered in the early '80s. Summits here tower 10,000 feet above the Owens Valley to the east, and it's arguably on this granite and snow where both American ski mountaineering and long-distance ski touring were born. The mountain objectives and gear have changed a lot in the century since the first snow surveyors plotted these hills. But a few things have stayed the same: It's still breathtakingly high; it can get insanely deep; and, from October to May, there's no one here. Wingwalkers is part of that story published in Backcountry Magazine, Spring 2017; written by Adam Howard, read by Matt Richardson. Backcountry Magazine Contributing Editor Heather Hansman is a recovering ski bum. In her new book, Powder Days: Ski Bums, Ski Towns and the Future of Chasing Snow, Heather threads her own personal narrative—you know, the way she came to once call herself a ski bum—into the American story of ski bumming itself. It sounds so simple on the cover, as if any of us who've skied 100-plus days a year could relate. But in the context of today, we're starting to question not only the future of ski bumming but its past. And Heather goes deep with skiing icons who've built a life around sacrificing for snow.   This episode of the Backcountry Podcast is brought to you by Minus33.

Lesley McKenna is a former professional snowboarder, 3 x Olympian, coach, mentor, mother and yoga teacher. She has recently launched Wandering Workshops with photographer and sports journalist, Hannah Bailey, offering split boarding and ski touring adventures which combine expert coaching with creating a holistic and embodied connection with the natural environment. In this episode, Lesley and I talk about what first brought her to snowboarding and split boarding. We discuss the benefits she has experienced personally from time spent outdoors and in nature.
