Julianna Baggott joins Book Lust to talk about her wonderfully wacky new collection of short stories, "I'd Really Prefer Not to Be Here with You," a little bit sci-fi, a little bit horror, and a lot of human nature, all set in the not-so-distant and slightly dystopian future. Host Nancy Pearl asks Julianna about her writing process, and they trade favorite short story writers. Julianna explains how learning about screenwriting can make anyone a better writer.
I didn't expect the trailer to feel so small and that some of the blood would still be wet. But I must have expected some blood because I cuffed my jeans before going in. And I didn't expect the cats would have come back---a window was open, its screen clawed loose. I didn't expect how they pawed through the blood. Dotting the counters with their small footprints. I didn't expect the trailer to feel so densely packed---a family had lived here, a mother, a father, a twelve-year-old son, and all of their stuff. | Copyright 2022 by Julianna Baggott. For my eighteenth birthday, I get a tattoo. A small red heart on my shoulder, Loot inked across it in black cursive. Loot was my brother's nickname. He was twelve years old when he disappeared. I was seven. The next morning, I peel off the bandage to take a look. A vine with thorns where there was no vine with thorns. It wraps around the heart, above and below Loot's name. | Copyright 2021 by Julianna Baggott. Narrated by Susan Hanfield.

My mother used to tell me we came from the matriarchal vampiric line that had been traced farther back than Queen Elizabeth. She only told me these things after a seizure. Many people with epilepsy talk about how, after a seizure, strange memories pop up---small but suddenly vibrant details; my mother would recall the small vibrant details of our collective vampiric past. What kind of mother would do this? Mine. And, when I was little, I loved her for it. | Copyright 2020 by Julianna Baggott. Narrated by Judy Young.
