Across the federal government, the number of federal workers fired under Donald Trump and DOGE currently stands at over a hundred thousand. Some of those workers have turned to a website called We the Builders. It was created by federal workers associated with the U.S. Digital Service as a resource for employees who have lost their jobs, who are afraid of losing their jobs, or who have a whistleblower complaint.  The Radio Hour's Adam Howard spoke with two of the site's creators: Kate Green, who recently left the federal government for a job in the private sector, and a web developer who identifies himself as Milo – using a pseudonym, since he is still employed in the government.  “Both the beauty and the tragedy is that the work the government does is largely invisible,” as Milo put it. “You don't always know that it is USDA inspectors who are working in the slaughterhouses, who are making sure that work is being done in a safe and sanitary fashion … But they give a damn about making sure that food is safe. If that goes away, that's not immediately visible to people. And they don't necessarily know that these people have lost their jobs or that food is going to be less safe until people get hurt or worse. And so, we want to make sure that people start to understand what the cuts in these programs actually mean.”Plus, this year, The New Yorker's centennial, we're revisiting some classics from the magazine's past with a series called Takes. The novelist Michael Cunningham was already in his forties when Annie Proulx's short story “Brokeback Mountain”—about two young men working as shepherds who unexpectedly fall in love—was published. “The New Yorker was not the first big-deal magazine to run a story about gay people. It wasn't, like, ‘Oh, my God, a story, finally!,' ” Cunningham recalls. But it made a huge impression nevertheless. “It was a story in The New Yorker about two gay men that was first and foremost a love story. . . . I didn't want to just read it; I wanted to absorb this story in a more lasting way.”  Excerpts of Annie Proulx's “Brokeback Mountain” were read by Monica Wyche.

Some areas could see 6-8 inches total. Cooler temperatures are forecasted due to "cold air damming," with highs in the 50s and 60s this week.

F-16s flew overhead, marching bands played, and singers entertained with cultural performances during Taiwan's presidential inauguration on Monday. The inauguration of President Lai Ching-te was “quite the party,” Asia analyst Michael Cunningham tells “The Daily Signal Podcast,” after attending the event in Taiwan. The new president has a challenging job in front of him as the country continues to face threats of hostility from China. Lai's inaugural speech was overall “probably the most direct and the hardest-line inaugural address we've seen towards China yet,” says Cunningham, who serves as a research fellow in The Heritage Foundation's Asian Studies Center. (Heritage founded The Daily Signal in 2014.)The new president likely angered leaders in Beijing, according to Cunningham, when during the speech he said the Republic of China—Taiwan—and the People's Republic of China are “not subordinate to each other.” While Cunningham calls this statement “common sense,” it is also “not something that you say generally if you're the president of Taiwan” because China interprets this as a “two-China philosophy,” when China actually considers Taiwan a part of the mainland.Ultimately, Cunningham says Lai is expected to seek to preserve the status quo between China and Taiwan.Cunningham joins the show to discuss where the relationship between China and Taiwan stands and whether America's relationship with Taiwan is expected to change under Lai's presidency.Enjoy the show! Keeping Taiwan free from the grasp of the Chinese Communist Party is a vital interest of the United States. An attack on the democratic, self-governing island by the People's Republic of China would gravely threaten the security and prosperity of everyday Americans. This represents just one of the key conclusions reached in the landmark research paper published this month by Heritage Research Fellow Michael Cunningham, The American Case for Taiwan. Taiwan's indispensability to the U.S. was further reinforced by a Heritage delegation to Taipei in February 2024 led by President Kevin Roberts. Please join us for a lively discussion with Dr. Roberts and Michael Cunningham as we explore one of the world's most dangerous flashpoints and the right American strategy to keep Taiwan free from the CCP. A Couple indicted for disposing of baby's ashes Five People Displaced After Fire Breaks Out in Marietta Marietta Council Tightens New Restrictions on Downtown Housing   Plus, Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food longevity.   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!   BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: A Couple indicted for disposing of baby's ashes A couple from Dallas, Anilus and Rosnie Frederic, were indicted last week by a Cobb grand jury on serious charges relating to the alleged theft and disposal of a child's ashes. The incident reportedly took place at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital's linen sorting facility where both were employed. The Frederics are accused of stealing a small gold and black urn containing the cremated remains of a baby from Carla Watson on January 25, 2023. The urn was reportedly located inside a teddy bear belonging to Watson. The couple allegedly took the urn home and disposed of the remains in an unspecified manner1. Initially charged with theft by taking and abandonment of a dead body, the charges were upgraded to include malicious removal of a dead body from a grave, removal of a dead body from a grave, and abandonment of a dead body, all felonies. They were arrested in April, and each posted an $8,470 bond after spending a day in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. The indictment was handed down on Tuesday, February 13, in Cobb Superior Court, presided over by Judge Henry Thompson. STORY 2: Five People Displaced After Fire Breaks Out in Marietta A fire that erupted in a multifamily home in Marietta on Tuesday morning left five people displaced. The incident occurred on the 9000 block of Whittington Parkway off Austell Road around 10 a.m. Over a dozen fire crews from Cobb County were quick to respond, successfully containing the flames. The blaze was primarily limited to one unit, though two other units suffered smoke damage. Cobb Fire Chief of Staff, Michael Cunningham, commended the swift and efficient response of the fire crews. "Our crews did a fantastic job getting the fire isolated to one unit," he said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and thankfully, no injuries were reported1. As a reminder to the community, Cunningham emphasized the importance of checking smoke detectors regularly and closing doors before bedtime. STORY 3: Marietta Council Tightens New Restrictions on Downtown Housing Marietta City Council has recently implemented stricter controls on downtown residential development by modifying zoning regulations1. Under the new rules, developers must now gain specific approval from the council for construction of residential buildings in the downtown area. This significant shift follows a series of heated debates, including a freeze on apartment construction and disputes over architectural designs. Prior to this change, residential construction was generally permitted in the central business district. However, the new regulations necessitate explicit council approval1. In addition to this, the amendment revises the definition of building height, retaining height restrictions but allowing certain exceptions for structures such as church spires. These modifications are intended to address concerns about preserving the historical and aesthetic integrity of downtown Marietta. This comes in the wake of previous legal disputes and disagreements over development projects1. As always, stay tuned for more local news and updates. We'll be right back.   Break: HENRY COUNTY SHERRIF STORY 4: North Cobb Christian Triumphantly Advances to Round 2 The North Cobb Christian Eagles soared to victory in the first round of the Class AA state tournament, defeating North Murray with a solid 77-56 score. The team's strong start set the pace, leading them to host either Providence Christian or Columbia in round two. Guard Gabe Bolden was a standout, netting 14 of his 19 points in the first quarter. As a collective, the team demonstrated exceptional offensive prowess, contributing to their success. North Murray's Isaiah Morrison led his team with 16 points and seven rebounds. Stay local, stay informed, and watch for updates on the Eagles' tournament journey. STORY 5: Fannin County too much for NCC The Fannin County girls' basketball team delivered a commanding performance against North Cobb Christian, securing a 65-37 victory in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs. The game, which took place in Kennesaw, saw Fannin County take an early lead, scoring the first five points and maintaining their advantage throughout the match. This win propels the Rebels into the second round of the playoffs, where they will face off against the winner of the Providence Christian and Columbia match. North Cobb Christian, despite having won 13 out of their last 14 games, experienced their second consecutive loss, bringing their season to a close. Despite the loss, North Cobb Christian coach Ray Gutierrez expressed pride in his team's accomplishments and optimism for future improvement. North Cobb Christian relied heavily on Addie Johnson, who led the team with 18 points, while Ava Garner contributed with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fannin County, on the other hand, was propelled by Courtney Davis, who scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers. Davis played a significant role in establishing the Rebels' early lead, scoring 11 of her points in the first quarter. We'll be back in a moment.   Break: DRAKE STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins Conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food longevity. Today's episode finds two renowned authors who found solace in writing characters navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. First, NPR's Leila Fadel spoke with Sigrid Nunez about The Vulnerables, which follows a woman, a parrot, and a Gen Z college student unexpectedly taking care of another during lockdown in New York. Then, Michael Cunningham tells NPR's Scott Simon about Day, which chronicles three days — spread out over three years — in the life of a Brooklyn family, and how isolation and companionship changes them over that time.
