Miroslav Volf explores agapic love, creation's goodness, and God's grief—an alternative to despair, power, and world rejection.“When a wanted child is born, the immense joy of many parents often renders them mute, but their radiant faces speak of surprised delight: ‘Just look at you! It is so very good that you are here!' This delight precedes any judgment about the beauty, functionality, or moral rectitude of the child. The child's sheer existence, the mere fact of it, is ‘very good.' That's what I propose God, too, exclaimed, looking at the new-born world. And that unconditional love grounds creation's existence.”In this fourth Gifford Lecture, Miroslav Volf contrasts the selective and self-centered love of Ivan Karamazov with the radically inclusive, unconditional love of Father Zosima. Drawing deeply from Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, Genesis's creation and flood narratives, and Hannah Arendt's concept of amor mundi, Volf explores a theology of agapic love: unearned, universal, and enduring. This is the love by which God sees creation as “very good”—not because it is perfect, but because it exists. It's the love that grieves corruption without destroying it, that sees responsibility as mutual, and that offers the only hope for life in a deeply flawed world. With references to Luther, Nietzsche, and modern visions of power and desire, Volf challenges us to ask what kind of love makes a world, sustains it, and might one day save it. “Love the world,” he insists, “or lose your soul.”Episode Highlights“The world will either be loved with unconditional love, or it'll not be loved at all.”“Unconditional love abides. If the object of love is in a state that can be celebrated, love rejoices. If it is not, love mourns and takes time to help bring it back to itself.”“Each is responsible for all. Each is guilty for all. Each needs forgiveness from all. Each must forgive all.”“Creation is not primarily sacramental or iconic. It is an object of delight both for humans and for God.”“Agapic love demands nothing from the beloved, though it cares and hopes much for them and for the shared world with them.”Show NotesSchopenhauer and Nietzsche's visions of happiness: pleasure and power as substitutes for love“Love as hunger”: the devouring nature of epithemic desireIvan Karamazov's tragic love for life—selective, gut-level, and self-focused“There is still… this wild and perhaps indecent thirst for life in me”Father Zosima's universal love for “every leaf and every ray of God's light”“Love man also in his sin… Love all God's creation”Sonya and Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment: love as restoration“She loved him and stayed with him—not although he murdered, but because he murdered”God's declaration in Genesis: “And look—it was very good”Hannah Arendt's amor mundi—“I want you to be” as pure affirmationCreation as gift: “Each is itself by being more than itself”Martin Luther on marriage, sex, and delight as godly pleasuresThe flood as hypothetical: divine grief replaces divine destruction“It grieved God to his heart”—grief as a form of agapic love“Each is responsible for all. Each is guilty for all.”Agape over erotic love: not reward and punishment, but faithful presence and care“Agapic love demands nothing… It is free, sovereign to love, humble.”Closing invitation: to live the life of love, under whatever circumstancesProduction NotesThis podcast featured Miroslav VolfEdited and Produced by Evan RosaHosted by Evan RosaProduction Assistance by Taylor Craig and Macie BridgeA Production of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School https://faith.yale.edu/aboutSupport For the Life of the World podcast by giving to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: https://faith.yale.edu/giveSpecial thanks to Dr. Paul Nimmo, Paula Duncan, and the media team at the University of Aberdeen. In this intriguing and often hilarious episode, Raghunath and Kaustubha explore a natural pattern in life and spirituality: moving from simplicity to complexity, and then back again. On the spiritual journey, we may wrestle with perplexing questions: Who am I? Is there God? Is the world real? Is it all an illusion? We speak of “the sound of one hand clapping” or “being here now,” and sometimes it can feel as if spiritual guides are muddying the waters just to make them seem deep. But it's possible to emerge on the other side of these tangled spiritual riddles and discover the simplicity of divine love — a simplicity that carries within it the depth and wisdom gained along the way. Key Takeaways: * The recurring life pattern: from simplicity to complexity and back to a refined simplicity. * How the search for truth can lead to ever-deepening — and sometimes overly complex — spiritual riddles. * Why divine love, though simple in expression, contains the deepest wisdom. * The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam's portrayal of pure, selfless love in Yaśodā's relationship with Kṛṣṇa. * The difference between naive, material love and enlightened, spiritual love. What can we learn from a medieval hermit about how to live? A surprising amount perhaps. Julian of Norwich is the author of the oldest surviving book by a woman in English – her Revelations of Divine Love provides a fascinating guide to what it means to be well despite experiencing suffering.Hannah Lucas is a scholar of Julian's work, among other medieval contemplative literature. She explores the entanglement of illness and insight in her recent book Impossible Recovery: Julian of Norwich and the Phenomenology of Well-Being, including what Julian meant by saying “all shall be well” and “we are all one in love”.Our conversation considers some parallels between Christian mystics and Indian traditions – particularly yoga, which Hannah also teaches. One dimension of this involves facing the world as it is instead of wishing it were otherwise, which has broad implications for everyday life, as we discuss.See here for an introductory blog about Hannah's book. She is the Newby Trust Research Fellow in English at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. From October, she will be an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow based at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Technical University Berlin.
Come Back to Love® Radio: How To Know When You're Ready In this heartfelt and illuminating episode, Robyn Vogel, Love & Intimacy Coach and creator of Come Back to Love®, takes the mic as our guest to explore the transformational path of returning to love—within ourselves and in relationship. Robyn shares the core philosophy behind Come Back to Love®, a unique approach that blends modern psychotherapy with ancient tantric wisdom. She walks us through how identifying your core wound—the deep emotional imprint formed in early life—can be the doorway to healing patterns of disconnection, abandonment, and fear. When these unconscious beliefs are brought into the light, we finally stop repeating the same painful relationship cycles and start choosing love, presence, and connection instead. Listeners will learn how tantra is not just about sexuality, but a sacred path of deep embodiment, presence, and vulnerability. One of the standout moments was Robyn's powerful response to the question: “How do I know when I'm ready?” Her answer is both compassionate and revealing—you don't have to feel fully ready. You simply need a willingness to be curious, to look inward with kindness, and to take the next small step toward healing. Whether you're single, partnered, or somewhere in between, this episode invites you to soften your guard, come home to your heart, and discover what's truly possible when you come back to love. Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 410The Saint of the day is Saint CajetanSaint Cajetan’s Story Like most of us, Cajetan seemed headed for an “ordinary” life—first as a lawyer, then as a priest engaged in the work of the Roman Curia. His life took a characteristic turn when he joined the Oratory of Divine Love in Rome, a group devoted to piety and charity, shortly after his ordination at 36. When he was 42 he founded a hospital for incurables at Venice. At Vicenza, he joined a “disreputable” religious community that consisted only of men of the lowest stations of life—and was roundly censured by his friends, who thought his action was a reflection on his family. He sought out the sick and poor of the town and served them. The greatest need of the time was the reformation of a Church that was “sick in head and members.” Cajetan and three friends decided that the best road to reformation lay in reviving the spirit and zeal of the clergy. Together they founded a congregation known as the Theatines—from Teate [Chieti] where their first superior-bishop had his see. One of the friends later became Pope Paul IV. They managed to escape to Venice after their house in Rome was wrecked when Emperor Charles V's troops sacked Rome in 1527. The Theatines were outstanding among the Catholic reform movements that took shape before the Protestant Reformation. Cajetan founded a monte de pieta—“mountain or fund of piety”—in Naples, one of many charitable, nonprofit credit organizations that lent money on the security of pawned objects. The purpose was to help the poor and protect them against usurers. Cajetan's little organization ultimately became the Bank of Naples, with great changes in policy. Reflection If Vatican II had been summarily stopped after its first session in 1962, many Catholics would have felt that a great blow had been dealt to the growth of the Church. Cajetan had the same feeling about the Council of Trent, held from 1545 to 1563. But as he said, God is the same in Naples as in Venice, with or without Trent or Vatican II. We open ourselves to God's power in whatever circumstances we find ourselves, and God's will is done. God's standards of success differ from ours. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
Despite his belief in the love of God, Terry Lees admits he once harboured the feeling that he did not always deserve that love, that he was not worthy, nor had he earned it. Terry saw himself as a sinner and, in truth, unable to fully accept that God could love him unconditionally, unreservedly. Terry could look to the man on the Cross and feel forgiveness yet could not – or would not – fully understand the depth of the meaning of the Cross. By the grace of God, that changed. Join Terry in Silver Linings as he outlines the slow, imperceptible process of change and conversion, which led to major transformation.

St. Julian of Norwich is the author of Revelations of Divine Love, the oldest surviving book in English written by a woman. She was a deeply spiritual person and knew firsthand the power of the Divine Feminine during tumultuous times. As an anchorite, Julian was a spiritual director to her community, though her guidance lives on mystically. What wisdom does 14th century Julian have for us today in the 21st century? Heaven and Hell 156. Together with the state of the angels' interiors which pertain to their love and wisdom, the states of various things outside them appearing before their eyes are changed. For the things outside them take on an appearance in accordance with the things within them. Divine Love and Wisdom (40)... love and wisdom are the subject itself, and that what is perceived outside of it and as hovering and floating is nothing but an appearance of the state of the subject in itself. There are several reasons why this has not hitherto been seen, one of which is, that appearances are the first things out of which the human mind forms its understanding, and these appearances the mind can shake off only by the exploration of the cause; and if the cause lies deeply hidden, the mind can explore it only by keeping the understanding for a long time in spiritual light; and this it cannot do by reason of the natural light which continually withdraws it. The truth is, however, that love and wisdom are the real and actual substance and form that constitute the subject itself. Heaven and Hell 54. It can in no sense be said that heaven is outside of any one; it is within him. For it is in accordance with the heaven that is within him that each angel receives the heaven that is outside of him. This makes clear how greatly misled is he who believes that to come into heaven is simply to be taken up among angels, without regard to what one's interior life may be, thus that heaven is granted to each one by mercy apart from means; when, in fact, unless heaven is within one, nothing of the heaven that is outside can flow in and be received. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. The aim is to maintain focus on understanding the Text's application to the inner life while reinforcing key LP principles highlighted in the exchanges.

In this thought-provoking episode of "Father and Joe," hosts Father Boniface and Joe Rockey delve into the complexities of understanding and applying Jesus' two greatest commandments, especially focusing on the challenge of loving one's neighbor. Our hosts begin by exploring the often-paraphrased commandments: loving God with all your being and loving your neighbor as yourself, often quoted as the 'Golden Rule.' This conversation illuminates the common misinterpretation of these commandments as being overly simplistic, highlighting the intricacies involved in genuinely understanding and implementing them in our lives.Joe candidly shares his struggle with the application of the second commandment, especially when personal preferences and expectations do not align with those of others. This is a common modern-day challenge, especially apparent within the context of relationships and marriage, where different personal desires can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings. Father Boniface provides profound insight into this dilemma, reminding us that these commandments are derived from the Old Testament but find their full meaning through Jesus' life and teachings. The discussion takes a more profound turn as Father Boniface introduces the new commandment given by Jesus at the Last Supper: "Love one another as I have loved you." This statement elevates the concept of love to a divine level, setting Jesus' life as the benchmark for how love should be expressed—through selfless, sacrificial acts that are not bound by mere duty or superficial niceties. The dialogue ventures into how this divine love correlates with the Paschal mystery, emphasizing that true love demands sacrifice, echoes the crucifixion, and transcends everyday preferences. The episode transitions into practical spirituality by exploring how to set realistic goals for loving others as Jesus does. Despite the challenges inherent in this path, our hosts encourage listeners to embrace their journey with honesty and openness to transformation. Joe reflects on the staggering potential of adopting Jesus' model of love, imagining its impact on his personal life and relationships. Father Boniface further explains that the Christian journey is not about immediate perfection but a lifelong commitment to growth, guided and sustained by the grace found in the sacraments and the community of the church. As the conversation wraps up, listeners are invited to introspect and evaluate where they stand in the continuum of divine love. Father Boniface gently urges everyone to envision a life perfected in divine love, a journey fueled by grace and sustained by a steadfast desire to love like Christ. Together, they highlight that while this path demands patience and perseverance, it ultimately leads to profound spiritual fulfillment and a deeper understanding of God's boundless love for humanity.Hashtags: #DivineLove, #SpiritualGrowth, #ChristianLiving, #TwoCommandments, #GoldenRule, #JesusTeachings, #LoveYourNeighbor, #ScriptureUnderstanding, #SacrificialLove, #LastSupper, #PaschalMystery, #SpiritualDirection, #Grace, #ChristianFaith, #SelflessLove, #MarriageChallenges, #ChristianRelationships, #DailyLifeProblems, #SpiritualInsight, #DivineCommandments, #OldTestament, #NewTestament, #LoveLikeJesus, #SpiritualTransformation, #FatherBonifaceHicks, #JoeRockey, #FatherAndJoePodcast, #UnderstandingGod, #BuildingFaith, #RelationshipWithGod, #ReligiousTeachings, #FaithConversations, #SpiritualFulfillment, #Sacraments, #ChurchCommunity, #ChristianJourneyThis line is here to correct the site's formatting error.

In a valley tucked between ancient mountains, a Prophet of Allah SWT wandered in the silence of dawn. His heart was full of remembrance (dhikr), and the air echoed with unseen praise from creation. As he sat in solitude beneath a towering rock, he heard a faint sob — soft, trembling, like a child in prayer. He looked around and found no human soul. Then he noticed a small stone, resting in the mountain's shadow, shivering as if in pain.Surprised, the Prophet asked, “O stone, why do you weep?” By the will of Allah SWT, the stone answered, “I cry out of fear of Jahannam Hellfires, for I heard a verse that even the stones may fall for fear of Allah SWT (God).” The Prophet, moved by this miracle, wept too. For even a lifeless stone knew what many hearts had forgotten: the awe and terror of standing before the Almighty Creator.

Ep. 190 (Part 2 of 2) | The eleventh Wisdom Series dialogue with A. H. Almaas brings us to the second turning of his teaching, into the boundless dimension of divine love. Hameed explores this nondual dimension in detail: its qualities, what it's like to experience firsthand, and what the effects of such an experience are likely to be. This boundless dimension of loving consciousness is the first of the five boundless dimensions, though love continues to develop throughout them all. Hameed gives a beautiful account of his initial experience with this dimension, when divine love and light permeated all of reality. “Why don't more people experience this if love is always there? asks co-host John Dupuy, and Hameed explains that it's always there in potential form though not always manifest; the experience is there for when we are ripe for it.Having awakened to this dimension, one can't help but want everyone to feel this way, Hameed says, and this is the main reason spiritual teachers teach. Hameed describes the obstacles that prevent us from experiencing the reality of divine love, how it challenges our perceived separateness, and tells us that after experiencing this unity, returning to separateness is not a choice. It turns out that experiencing boundless love is not a panacea for enlightenment, but creates an upwelling of obstacles and a state where our boundedness feels even more restrictive than before. What happens when our lived experience doesn't align with what we believe about God? How do we hold on to faith when trauma, suffering, or loss shatters our spiritual foundation? Author and counselor Michael Cusick understands this tension intimately. As a survivor of childhood abuse, Michael found himself caught in self-destructive cycles that threatened his soul and relationships. Yet through his own healing journey, he discovered the profound impact our personal stories have on our attachment to God — and how restoring that attachment can transform our lives. Now, through his intensive counseling work at Restoring the Soul and in his new book, **Sacred Attachment: Escaping Spiritual Exhaustion and Trusting in Divine Love**, Michael helps others reconnect with a God who is both safe and loving — even in the wake of deep wounds. In this thoughtful conversation, Davey and Michael talk about what to do when your relationship with God feels fractured, why attachment is so important spiritually speaking, and why it seems like so many leaders are falling in our generation. If you've struggled in your relationship with God because of the pain you have experienced, this episode is an invitation to begin healing, to rebuild trust, and to rediscover a sacred attachment with the One who will never let us go. Ep. 189 (Part 1 of 2) | The eleventh Wisdom Series dialogue with A. Hameed also relates how hatred and greed can exist in this reality of pure goodness, and tells us that it is here, in the ocean of love and light, that they are transformed. A wonderfully numinous, illuminating conversation. Recorded May 1, 2025.“Full nonduality: not just nonduality between subject and object…but where nothing is separate from anything else—one indivisible medium of loving consciousness.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing the 11th dialogue in the A. In this special episode of The Free Radical Podcast, Swami Padmanabha is joined by theologian, teacher, and writer Robert Nicastro, whose work explores the intersection of religion, science, and artificial intelligence. As Executive Director of the Center for Christogenesis, Robert builds on the vision of Teilhard de Chardin, advancing an integrated understanding of spirituality and science for a planet in transformation. The episode coincides with the upcoming launch of Swami Padmanabha's third book, "Evolution in Divine Love: The Eternal Becoming of God, Soul, and Matter." Together, they explore the book's central themes—love as an evolving force, a divine being in dynamic expansion, and the implications of this vision for soul and matter. They discuss how both human identity and material reality are part of an unfolding process, where changelessness and change coexist in divine love's ever-deepening expression. Swami and Robert reflect on the potential of this evolutionary vision to reshape our understanding of God, consciousness, and the future of religious thought, inviting listeners into a conversation that is both intellectually bold and spiritually nourishing. https://youtu.be/kzjiQHGMcg4 ▶ CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION: Gaudiya Reform Forum on Facebook .~ Swami Padmanabha's Channels ▶ FACEBOOK ▶ YOUTUBE ▶ INSTAGRAM ▶ WEBSITE ▶ PURCHASE RADICAL PERSONALISM: Revival Manifesto for Proactive Devotion in hardcover, paperback, and/or Kindle formats on Amazon ▶ WRITE your REVIEW of RADICAL PERSONALISM ~ Tadatmya Sangha's Channels ▶ WEBSITE ▶ FACEBOOK ▶ INSTAGRAM ▶ YOUTUBE
It is a deep and profound honor to welcome my teacher, Shannon Port, onto the podcast, who shares generously with us about the path of the true Divine Feminine. This episode is not to be missed and is a potent stream specifically for our listeners. In our conversation, Shannon shares how she came into this work from an early age, the unfolding of her life's work and magnum opus, and how this path has been one of leaning way in to relationships, love, heartbreak, and living and learning all of it.She makes important distinctions between the feminine and masculine spiritual paths (honoring all of it), and brings this work squarely back to relationships of the heart.Shannon Port has been teaching and sharing with the world a profound body of Feminine Archetypal Wisdom for the past two decades through the Divine Feminine Wisdom Teachings in Light Body Yoga and Light Body Woman. Art of the Feminine is a Cosmic Feminine Stream received by a true Female Initiate who has been working in the frequency of the Goddess since birth. Shannon has lived these Mysteries and has traveled the deep feminine path of Goddess Initiation, working closely with the Divine Feminine Spiritual Hierarchies, to restore and regenerate The Inner Mysteries of Divine Love on Earth. Through her heart and her Word, she shares this transmission as her soul's mission. The work here has been lived, tasted and fully integrated and digested. It is beyond sacred and holds the Divine Feminine Impulse for the coming Age of Venus and The Goddess Epoch. In this episode, Shannon covers:- the trajectory of her life's work since childhood- her embodied initiations, and the path of the solar feminine- why spiritual growth is about alchemy, not bypassing - especially within love and sexuality- why the feminine mysteries have been left out and are a critical missing piece- how the woman's heart is the mothership that births, sustains, and redeems life- why Shannon's work is an expression of a living lineage—not theory, but transmission through embodimentI can't wait for you to listen. Former barrister turned philosopher and writer, Aedamar Kirrane experienced a spontaneous mystical awakening that began in 2015 and continues to unfold. Unable to find any support or understanding within her own Christian tradition she embarked on a deep enquiry to understand the inner dynamics and telos of awakening. She came to believe in life as an original blessing rather than the doctrine of original sin that she thinks has destroyed our sense of ourselves as sacred beings. Her spiritual autobiography is Light on Fire: Waking Up to Divine Love, published 2021. Through ongoing reflection and curiosity she has developed her own threefold mystical cosmology that understands creation in the pattern of exodus and return; that recognises all of life as sacred, described through the concept of panentheism; and that the purpose of human life is deification or the return to our divine state while still in human form. All this is set within the context of the Great Awakening we are living through now, of which the human experience is a micro version. She has come to recognise that spontaneity is characteristic of the human experience of an evolutionary shift in consciousness. Aedamar's awakening is mediated through her mystical and spiritual writing and she recognises sacred writing as its own spiritual path that she calls The Via Scriptoria. Aedamar's visions are published on aedamarkirrane.com. She blogs at The New Scriptorium. Aedamar will be opening a wisdom school called "The Mystical Birth of the True Self" in September. It will be a nine month programme to support awakening to our inner divinity. Today's conversation on Back Porch Theology is a part two, so if you haven't listened to last week's conversation with our friend Katherine Wolf, I encourage you to do so. Now before we dive in, I'd like to read a brief excerpt from Katherine's latest book titled, Treasures in the Dark: “David taught me that laughter and worship aren't so different. In fact, they are simply two of the shapes that hope takes. Both laughter and worship are most powerful when offered from full brokenness of body or of circumstance. Sure, it's great to celebrate and praise God when life is good. But whooping with laughter when you can hardly speak or raising your hands in worship from the seat of a wheelchair…now that's evidence of a soul who has found transcending security and joy in Divine Love. Suffering can harden us to the good things in life, or it can open us up to receive them with abandon.” Grab your Bible if you've got one and welcome to the porch…we're really glad you're here. A selection of passages from the text 'Revelations of Divine Love' by Julian of NorwichJulian of Norwich (1342-c 1416) was the most important English mystic of the 14th century. She wrote the best known surviving book in the English language written by a mystic, 'Revelations of Divine Love'. The book is the first written in English by a woman. Her spirituality is strongly Trinitarian and basically Neoplatonic. Through the Passion, Julian was led to visions of the Trinity and of the universe as it exists in God. She lived in permanent seclusion as an anchoress in her cell, which was attached to St Julian's Church, Norwich.

Trending with Timmerie - Catholic Principals applied to today's experiences.
Timmerie is all in on our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV... and not just because he’s the first American Pope (though whoa, how cool is that?!). This episode of Trending with Timmerie feels like a heart-to-heart over coffee and YouTube reels, as she unpacks Pope Leo’s first homily and what it means for you and me. Here’s what you need to know A Pope Who Gets It Timmerie kicks off by sharing her joy, and honestly, her giddiness about Pope Leo. Her four-year-old is already obsessed (“He’s so cute!”), and it’s contagious. Timmerie talks about the homily from his inauguration Mass and what it reveals about his vision as our spiritual papa. Pope Leo’s Big Theme: Holiness Through Sacrificial Love Pope Leo is setting the tone: he’s calling us to holiness... not by climbing a ladder of success or checking off boxes, but by sacrificial love. That’s the kind of love Christ modeled, and it's the love Peter was called into. Guess what?! You and I are called into it too. Love + Unity = The Mission Quoting St. Augustine, Pope Leo reminds us that our hearts are restless until they rest in God. We were made for Divine Love. That restlessness we feel is a hunger for the sacrificial, unshakable love of Christ. Pope Leo connects this to Peter's calling: to be a fisher of men, pulling souls from “the waters of evil and death.” This is a battle cry. Pope Leo wants to rescue souls (our souls) by anchoring us in God’s unshakable love. St. Peter's Call Is Our Call The homily goes into that famous post-Resurrection moment when Jesus asks Peter three times: “Do you love me?” Here’s the twist: -Jesus uses the Greek word for sacrificial love. -Peter responds with the Greek word for friendly love. It's awkward... but deeply human. Jesus is inviting Peter into deeper love, total self-giving love. Eventually, Peter gets it. He dies upside-down on a cross because he felt unworthy to die like Christ. That’s love. That’s leadership. The Church’s Call: Not Just “Nice,” but Holy Pope Leo quotes St. Augustine again to say the Church isn’t just a group of people who “get along.” It’s people who are radically united in loving their neighbor sacrificially: no fluff, no half-measures. So, Pope Leo’s message is to stop playing Church. Let’s be the Church. Takeaway from Timmerie: Pray for Pope Leo. Read his homilies. And most of all, join him in this mission. The path to holiness isn’t glamorous, but it’s epic. And now we’ve got a Holy Father who’s not just talking the talk; he’s walking with us every step. So… ready to be a fisher of souls with the Pope?
