What helps you stay grounded when life gets difficult? In this episode of Perspectives, Rev. Drs. Hannah and Brittany of First United Methodist Church of San Diego explore Luke 6:43-49 and Jesus' powerful images of trees, fruit, and firm foundations. Together, they discuss how faith is formed long before life's storms arrive—and why spiritual growth is less about avoiding hardship and more about developing the resilience to face it. The female pastors ultimately ask: What if discipleship isn't a "cost" to be paid, but a spiritual gym where we build the strength, courage, wisdom, and grounding needed to weather life's challenges? This progressive Christian conversation explores: Building faith for difficult times Faith as formation rather than achievement Why Jesus promises storms, not storm-free lives The connection between our inner life and outward actions Spiritual growth as a lifelong practice, not a one-time event Move from control to trust, certainty to surrender Discipleship being a rooting, grounding, and deepening rather than a “cost to be paid” Reflection Questions: What habits or influences are shaping the condition of my heart? Are there areas where my actions do not match my values or beliefs? What practices help me stay grounded when life becomes difficult? Most fiction writers are making at least one of these point of view mistakes. Find out which one could be hiding in your draft. You know that feeling when a scene isn't quite working, but you can't put your finger on why? Your pacing, dialogue, and structure all seem fine. And yet something is still off. Nine times out of ten, the culprit is POV.In this episode, I'm walking you through the five most common point of view mistakes, what each one looks like on the page, why it pulls readers out of your story, and what to do if a POV mistake is hiding in your draft. The good news? It has nothing to do with your talent as a writer. I see these mistakes in the strongest of manuscripts. And every single one is fixable. This is what I talk about: [02:27] Why head-hopping feels so disorienting to readers, and the simple scene-level rule that instantly creates cleaner, stronger POV. [07:11] The subtle "omniscience leak" that happens when your POV character knows things they realistically couldn't know in the moment.[11:42] Why a POV character who only reports action—with no thought, reaction, or internal stakes—leaves readers feeling disconnected.[17:13] How info-dumping and backstory disguised as thoughts can make scenes feel unnatural instead of emotionally immersive.[22:00] The subtle voice drift that makes your POV character slowly stop sounding like themselves, and why this is the hardest mistake to catch. These mistakes are fixable. Every single one. And once you know what to look for, you can write fiction so immersive that readers forget the real world exists until they reach the final page of your book. If that's the kind of story you want to write, this episode is for you.

Drawing from Julie's The Boardroom of the Inner Man and their global work with leaders, they offer a clear framework for understanding the internal “voices” that compete for control and how to bring them into alignment under Christ. Newton saw in the human hand proof of the divine; Darwin saw a key to our species' success. Many others, too, have described the hand in hyperbolic terms, as a paragon of design, a cornerstone of human uniqueness, an engine of our achievements. But what makes the human hand so powerful? Is it the proportions of the fingers? Is it the opposability of the thumb? Or, could it be none of this? Could it be that the real power of our hands lies—not in the physical design—but elsewhere, out of sight? My guest today is Dr. Matt Longo. Matt is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Birkbeck, University of London. He's the author of the recent book, The Invisible Hand, a wide-ranging tour of the human hand and how it's geared into the brain. Here, Matt and I talk about the difference between the "visible hand"—that is, its physical structure—and the "invisible hand"—its representation in the brain. We consider the evolution of the visible hand and whether there really is anything truly distinctive or impressive about it. We talk about the biology of touch. We tour the invisible hand, discussing how—through cortical magnification—the hand becomes over-represented in the brain's sensory maps. We catalogue a fews ways that the hands can go awry. And we talk about whether we should feel any nostalgia for all the hand-based activities and crafts that we're losing. Along the way, we also touch on star-nosed moles and raccoons; tetrapods and the primitive archetype; hand dominance; the parallel between a horse's knee and a human's wrist; tool use, plasticity and abstraction; homunculi; the rubber-hand illusion; supernumerary fingers; the Third Thumb project; and the question of what it might unlock if dolphins had hands. Alright, friends, this is a fun one. On to my interview with Dr. Matt Longo! Hey everyone! This week on the podcast we're joined by photographer, educator, and artist Anni Graham for a conversation that goes far deeper than photography, pricing, or building a luxury brand. What began as a conversation about growth, reinvention, and moving into a higher-end market quickly became something much more honest - about the inner life of being a creative, the private tensions many photographers carry, and what it takes to keep believing in yourself through seasons of doubt, ambition, motherhood, and change.Anni speaks candidly about the emotional rollercoaster of creative work, the mindset work underneath business growth, why so many photographers try to build on a fractured foundation, and what it looked like for her to make bold shifts before she had evidence they would work.We also talk about motherhood, moving to Costa Rica, redefining success, and the surprising freedom that comes when you begin building a career around the life you actually want. This one is personal, practical, and deeply encouraging. What We Cover:• Why the hardest work in photography often has little to do with photography• The mindset battles many creatives quietly carry• Building a business from identity, not insecurity• What Anni learned moving from elopements into the luxury market• Why she doubled her prices before she had proof it would work• Risk, reinvention, and trusting yourself before you have evidence• How motherhood reshaped her definition of success• Protecting creativity, nurturing energy, and tuning out the noise• Why experimentation and personal taste matter more than most strategyConnect with Anni:Anni's New E-Book: https://anni-graham.myflodesk.com/free-e-book Website: https://www.annigraham.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annigrahamConnect with Us: Apply for the Mastermind Program: https://learn.bradandjen.com/mastermind-coachingJoin Purpose & Profit – A Roadmap to 10k Weddings: https://learn.bradandjen.com/purpose-and-profit-courseInstagram: @bradandjeneducation @bradandjenChapters: (00:00) Why this conversation felt different (04:10) Life in Costa Rica and redefining success (11:45) The inner battle many creatives don't talk about (22:30) Mindset, insecurity, and building on a strong foundation (36:10) Protecting creativity and trusting your artistic voice (49:20) Motherhood, ambition, and what success can cost (01:02:15) Making the leap into the high-end market (01:16:30) Identity shifts, pricing, and finding aligned clients (01:29:00) Risk, reinvention, and making bold moves before proof (01:40:20) Final thoughts on courage, trust, and building a lifeKeywords: wedding photography, photographer mindset, creative growth, luxury wedding photography, artistic identity, entrepreneurship, self doubt, creativity, motherhood and business, pricing mindset, personal growth, photographer education, creative courage, reinvention

What happens when the life you've built—your identity, your direction, your sense of control—changes in an instant? In this conversation, Reino Gevers speaks with Dr. Tom Dutta, known as The Quiet Warrior, about a journey that moves far beyond success, resilience, or recovery. After rising to the highest levels of corporate leadership as a CEO, Tom came to a quiet but decisive realisation: leadership is not about authority, but authenticity—and the courage to lift others. Then everything changed.A severe brain injury disrupted not only his career, but his sense of self—forcing him into a far deeper confrontation with identity, limitation, and what truly endures when life no longer follows the expected path. What emerges from this conversation is not a story of overcoming in the conventional sense, but something more demanding:What remains when control is taken awayHow identity is reshaped through lossWhy resilience alone is not enough without inner transformationThrough his work—including best-selling books, The Quiet Warrior Podcast, and doctoral research into mental health and generational trauma—Tom continues to explore what it means to live with depth, awareness, and purpose after everything has been tested. This episode speaks directly to anyone who has faced a moment where life no longer fits the story they were living—and is searching for what comes next.#Resilience #MentalHealth #Leadership #PersonalGrowth#SelfDevelopment #OvercomingAdversity #LifeLessons #WhenFaithStopsWorking #LivingToBe #ReinoGevers #TomDutta #thequietwarriorMore Information: Public work at www.kreat.cahttps://www.thequietrevelationinstitute.org/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomdutta/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thequietwarrioreats/Podcast: The Quiet Warrior Show YouTube: @tomduttaAdverse Childhood Experience Test for AdultsLink: ACE TestDefining TraumaFrom the Greek word for wound — trauma is not just a terrible thing that happens to you.
