Episode #7 of Enemies of the State features commentary on Kelsey Wroten’s Cannonball, published by Uncivilized Books in 2019. Cannonball features the unlikely rise of Caroline Bertram, a queer art school graduate who aspires to greatness as a self-proclaimed literary genius. But what happens when greatness doesn’t fix the brokenness inside you? Wroten explores the Millenial experience and the hamster wheel of success through a cast of witty queer characters.
Sometimes writers don't love what they've written. Sometimes comics get misinterpreted. Sometimes one's feelings on what they wrote change with time. In clips from two of our favourite shows this year, comic creators Dennis O'Neil and Kelsey Wroten candidly reflect on their work. Dennis O'Neil is an iconic writer famous for his work on Batman and Green Arrow/Green Lantern in the 1970s. Hear the full interview with him here. Kelsey Wroten is an editorial cartoonist and writer of the book "Cannonball." Hear the full interview with her here. RFK airs first on CJRU 1280 AM in Toronto. This episode was edited by Mitchell Thompson. The original interviews were produced by Justin Chandler, Jacob Dubé and Mitchell Thompson.
In Cannonball, Kelsey Wroten tells the story of a a young writer dealing with the successes of her first novel. After her debut graphic novel became a hit in its own right, Wroten has seen some of the book’s events come to life first hand. Of course, the cartoonist isn’t her character. The Kansas City transplant had already made a name for herself as an illustrator, her work appearing in such publications as The New York Times, New Yorker and NPR. In this sit down recorded shortly after the book’s release, Wrote discusses her move to New York, experimenting with her visual style and the importance of queer identity in her work.
Hosts Justin and Jacob interview Kelsey Wroten about her comic "Cannonball," which tells the story of a young author's success and her feelings of inadequacy. Kelsey tells RFK about making editorial art for journalistic publications, the art-school pressures not to sell out, and why it sucks when people assume you write auto-bio. RFK airs first on CJRU 1280 AM in Toronto. This episode was produced by Justin Chandler.
