This episode was originally released on July 21st, 2018. When it comes to love, money is supposed to be no object. But there's no disentangling love from anything in our lives, and income is no exception. So how do you assess the role money should play in a relationship, and what happens when your desires and means change over time? In this episode, five letter writers want to know how to discuss money with their romantic and familial partners. How do I stop resenting my husband for his low income? How do I ask my stay-at-home wife to get a job? Should I feel obligated to share the wealth with my fiscally irresponsible parents? The Sugars answer these questions and more in rapid-fire style.

What would you call a marriage where spouses see “eye to eye” about money? Some might call it bliss. It's true that most couples at least occasionally quarrel about their finances. But could a better understanding of each other's values help spouses avoid that bickering? Shaunti Feldhahn thinks so, and she joins us today to talk about it.Shaunti Feldhahn is a Harvard graduate, former Wall Street analyst, social researcher, best-selling author, as well as a prominent public speaker. She is the co-author of Thriving in Love and Money: 5 Game-Changing Insights about Your Relationship, Your Money, and Yourself with her husband, Jeff, and has written several books with him revealing impactful truths about relationships at home and in the workplace.A Lesson Learned Over DinnerShaunti and her husband, Jeff, learned this lesson early in their marriage. Living in New York, they often ate out due to their demanding schedules. However, a seemingly small issue—ordering a Diet Coke—would trigger recurring arguments. Jeff, concerned about their financial future and mounting student loan debt, saw the expense as unnecessary, while Shaunti viewed it as a simple enjoyment that enhanced her meal.It wasn't until years later, during their research for their book Thriving in Love & Money, that they realized their conflict stemmed from differing values. Jeff prioritized financial security, while Shaunti valued the experience and enjoyment of a meal. Once they uncovered this, they could better communicate and honor each other's perspectives. The Root of Money Conflicts in MarriageFinancial disagreements often arise because couples fail to recognize and respect each other's values. In Shaunti and Jeff's national study, they found that:67% of couples in financial conflicts believe their perspective is the logical one.Couples often perceive their spouse's spending habits as irrational simply because they prioritize different things. For example, one spouse might see value in spending money on a gym membership for networking and health benefits, while the other might believe household essentials from Costco are a better use of resources. The key takeaway? Neither perspective is wrong—both are rooted in deeply held values. The Power of CommunicationThe solution to money conflicts isn't just budgeting or financial planning; it's communication. It's crucial that couples discuss not just what they want to spend money on, but why it matters to them.By having open and honest conversations about financial priorities, couples can:Build mutual understanding and trust.Find compromises that respect both perspectives.Create a financial plan that aligns with their shared goals and values. While couples can work through these issues on their own, it can be very beneficial to seek guidance from financial advisors—especially those with a biblical perspective. Kingdom Advisors, for example, are trained to address not just the numbers, but the relational and spiritual aspects of money management.Advisors can help couples navigate tough conversations, align their financial goals with their values, and ultimately steward their resources in a way that honors God and strengthens their marriage. At the heart of every financial decision in marriage lies an opportunity—to foster unity rather than division. God cares just as much about the marriage as He does about the finances. By understanding and honoring each other's values, couples can turn money from a source of conflict into an instrument of peace and purpose.Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly PublicationTo dive deeper into this topic, read Shaunti Feldhahn's full article in the first edition of Faithful Steward, FaithFi's new quarterly publication. This week's astrology brings major shifts! The Sun opposite Neptune stirs confusion and illusions, so trust your intuition, but don't get lost in fantasy. Sun trine Pluto and square Venus adds tension around love, money, and power struggles—watch for deep emotional shifts, especially with Venus moving into intense Scorpio. Mercury's busy too, squaring Jupiter (miscommunication, overconfidence) and trining Uranus (innovative insights). While things feel unclear, deeper healing is possible. As both the Sun and Mercury move into Libra, balance and harmony are key. Stay grounded and embrace the flow of change!

The biggest mistakes people make are in love and money. And how we do --- or don't --- talk about money can have a huge impact on our relationships. Today we're joined by Libby Leffler, Founder & CEO of First (https://www.thisfirst.com) to discuss the good, the bad, and the misunderstood about prenuptial agreements ("prenups") when it comes to strengthening your financial and emotional happiness. So, who needs a prenup, and why? Why are more women than ever initiating the conversation around prenups? What risks are you exposed to if you don't have a prenup? We discuss the rapidly shifting trends, evolving perceptions, and changing use cases around prenups today. We also learn about life as a tech founder (something we ex-investment bankers know nothing about). Money is a gift from God, but if it is not kept in the right position, it will take the place of God in our lives. In our society that treasures the riches of this world in an unhealthy way, disciples of Jesus must refocus their values.
Jim Rutledge and Matt Hamilton broadcast LIVE from BaraBrews Win & Spirits in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Jim starts the show LITERALLY yelling about the clouds, claiming that the Weather Channel and other weather news services pray on people's fears with overly dramatic weather advisories/warnings. Jim and Matt shift into the conversation about Jordan Love's extension, which he became eligible to sign last Friday. Jim predicts that the Packers will make Love the NFL's highest-paid QB (in terms of AAV), and Matt clams up at the idea of paying a QB over $55 million per year when there's such little sample size to go off of. Jim also pushes back against some listeners' "Lebron James stats" they are skewed or misrepresent Love's performance from his lone season as a starter. Primetime takes the guys through a blind Tinder Time, presenting the guys with the career stats of QBs BEFORE they signed extensions with AAVs that take up over 20% of their team's salary caps (like Jordan Love's likely will...)

This Valentine’s Day eve, we’re thinking about love and what the economy has to do with it. Coming off the heels of a high-inflation period, is this a good time in our economy to find love? On the show today, Julia Carpenter, a personal finance reporter for The Wall Street Journal, discusses how the economy shapes our relationships, the growing wealth gap between single and married people, and the idea of a “money date.” Then, married people enjoy many legal benefits that aren’t extended to single folks. Is it time to change that? And this week’s answer to the Make Me Smart question is all about Swiftynomics! Here’s everything we talked about today: “Couples Embrace the Least Romantic Date Ever: The Money Date” from The Wall Street Journal “It’s Now 40% More Expensive to Be Single and Dating Than It Was a Decade Ago” from Time “‘I'm So in Debt That I'm Afraid to Date'” from The Cut “How the economy shapes our love lives” from Vox “Moving In Together Doesn't Match the Financial Benefits of Marriage, but Why?” from The Wall Street Journal “Opinion | Marriage has a monopoly on legal benefits. It shouldn't.” from The Washington Post “Inflation ran hotter than expected in January, complicating the Fed’s rate decision” from CBS News “Swifties vs. NFL fans: What happens when two rabid fanbases collide” from Fast Company We want to hear your answer to the Make Me Smart question. You can reach us at makemesmart@marketplace.org or leave us a voicemail at 508-U-B-SMART.

Jesse revisits his infamous experiment in which he essentially stopped budgeting for an entire year. The result from that experiment was that he and his family spent several thousand extra dollars that they couldn't account for, and even though the extra spending was not material to the family bottom line, it still bothered Jesse. Today, he hits on what exactly it was that bothered him. Managing money well, building a plan for spending, is virtuous, and virtue is something that you do, not something that you simply have. When the Mecham family stopped following the Four Rules, they lost the habit! Got a question for Jesse?
