I really can't think of a better guest to discuss this universe. I found Jey to be an articulate and unusually accomplished artist, always finding a way to connect his projects to themes that matter to daily life while never pulling back from the imaginative and fantastic inventions that are the hallmarks of his style.  I found this a most enjoyable conversation and hope the same for our audience.More about Jey and his beautiful work:New Orleans comic book/ manga artist known as JeyOdin, is the creator and owner of the series "Hammer" which is currently being serialized and published through Saturday AM. JeyOdin attended SCAD where he majored in Sequential Art. Jey's first few publications came out with Antarctic Press, and then through Arch Enemy he was published on USA today. He was also the artist on Lemonade Code, published through OniPress. The pseudonym "JeyOdin" is known online on all social media websites like Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. JeyOdin loves drawing but is a HUGE fan of spending time with his Wife, baby and three hilariously cute dogs.Links to Jey's beautiful works, here:** Special note- Jey is a wonderful mentor and offers so much help to other artists- his linktree below is full of wonderful info about this!Links to his Books: https://www.amazon.com/Books-Jey-Odin/s?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3AJey%2BOdinMore social links and his many wonderful classes:https://jeyodin.gumroad.com/https://linktr.ee/jeyodin#dccomic #marvel #fantasticfour #saturdayam #comic #cartoon #manga #charlesschulz #peanuts #charliebrown #1990s #1980s #1970s #1960s #1950s #2000s #superhero #education #adolescence #economics #politics #africanamerican #civilrights #housing #labor #work #xmen #robocop #fantasy #bullying #Japan #everydayhero #hero #superman #dogs #parenting #familyMore about us:Our podcast is a comprehensive examination of all matters aesthetic, all the arts and humanities, how they connect us, a celebration of the creative process across all of the arts and most of all, what it means to be human. Absolute Wonder Woman #1 drops today, and we have its writer, Kelly Thompson, in the hot seat! After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in Sequential Art (how cool is that?!), Kelly started as a writer about comics, doing reviews and a column for CBR, but moved into the industry proper with a long run on IDW's Jem and the Holograms. Then it was on to Marvel, where she tackled a number of amazing titles, including Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps (with Kelly Sue DeConnick), Hawkeye (Kate Bishop version), Rogue & Gambit, Mr. and Mrs. X, Jessica Jones, more Captain Marvel, West Coast Avengers, and Black Widow (to name a few). She's also worked on creator-owned comics Black Cloak and The Cull with Substack/Image, Sabrina the Teenage Witch for Archie, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink for Boom! And now, she's sinking her teeth into Absolute Wonder Woman in addition to Birds of Prey at DC.You can follow Kelly on her site, 1979semifinalist.com, on Instagram @1979semifinalist, and on X @79SemiFinalist. _____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Join Tamara for an interview with Zack Turner, a Savannah native who studied Sequential Art at SCAD for 3 years, until COVID happened. Since then, he has been working and pursuing his art by creating sequential art zines, illustrations, and occasional murals. For the month of October, you can find Zack every Saturday 11-6 and Sunday 1-5 at Neighborhood Comics, where's he's working as the Artist in Residence.  And check out “Sunday Scaries” - his newly-self-published 16 page horror-comedy comic collection - available at Neighborhood Comics or through his IG.    Check out Zack's work and follow him here: https://www.instagram.com/intentional_zombiehorde/ https://www.zackturnercomics.com/  https://neighborhoodcomics.com/pages/neighborhood-comics-sequential-artist-in-residence-program  Topics in their chat include: The challenges of working in traditional sequential art media - pencil and then pen and ink on paper or board - when you have a "heavy hand;" how the industry really calls for artists being able to do at least some of their work in digital, unless there's a big enough budget for the time it generally takes to work traditionally; for his artist residency Zack is working on a collaborative zine called Radio Jammers, with a few artist friends in Texas, creating narratives based on songs they've chosen (Zack's is Death Machine by AJJ); the physical challenges of painting murals, including the need to constantly run back and forth away from it, to evaluate the entire scene; learning how to do comic book lettering with an Ames Lettering Tool; thinking of comic books as "a movie on paper," and you do the work of the director, sound designer, costumer, screenwriting, etc, so a lot of comic book artists also work in storyboarding for movies; the common practice in comic books to collaborate with a different artist who specializes in the graphic design and lettering aspects; did you know that the GA Southern Armstrong campus has a print shop available to the public?; the joy of classic Sunday newspaper comics such as Peanuts, Garfield, and Calvin and Hobbes; how much fun he had during the SOY X SOY Art Battle back in July and how surprised he was to make it to the last round; and finally: Zack loves art collaborations - feel free to reach out to him if you're interested!   Tune in and get all the details!

Episode 23 - Murdock and Marvel: 1985 This year Marvel is all about the cash grab, and so we get Secret Wars II, a bunch of vaguely copyright-infringing kids books, and some fantastic Bill Sienkiewicz art that makes everything else worth it.  Let's talk 1985 in comics, Marvel and Daredevil. The Year in Comics  Notable and Newsworthy Comics and Sequential Art: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33476.Comics_and_Sequential_Art Industry Trends Eagle/Kirby Awards Dan's Favorite The Year in Marvel Events & Happenings New Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Peter David Dan's Favorite The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #214-225, Fantastic Four #281, Marvel Tales #181, Spectacular Spider-Man #108-109, Marvel Fanfare #23   Writing credits: Denny O'Neil (214-18, 220-222, 225), Frank Miller (219), O'Neil and Jim Shooter (223), Jim Owsley (224)  Pencilers: David Mazzucchelli (214-17, 220-223, 225), Sal Buscema (218), John Buscema (219), Dan Jurgens and Geof Isherwood (224)  Inks: David Mazzucchelli (214-17, 220-221, 225), Ian Akin and Brian Garvey (218), Gerry Talaoc (219), Kim DeMulder (222-223), Mel Candido and Bruce Patterson (224)  The year starts with the conclusion of the Micah Synn story that took most of 1984. Synn is weakened and running for his life. Daredevil saves Synn from Kingpin's men and some homeless men before himself asking for help.  Next was an interesting if not confusing western inspired story taking place in two different places and times that seemed to have a connection to Daredevil  We learn in a story with the Gael that Glorianna works for the I.R.A. as the Old Woman of Beare  We get another story with the Jester who breaks out of prison just so he can kidnap a noted actor and take his place for a tv production of Cyranno De Bergerac. In that story we see Daredevil dress up as the Jester and lead police around as a distraction allowing the Jester to finish his flawless performance.  We got a really fascinating story from Frank Miller in which Matt Murdock doesn't appear as Daredevil at all nor does he even speak.  Next, we get a tragic end to a long-time character. This will be our spotlight for this week.  The follow-up to that story takes Daredevil/Murdock to Venice, Italy in which he succeeds in getting the patents back – but it doesn't help his feelings of guilt.  The Mudd Brothers kidnap Glorianna and Daredevil and Black Widow come to her rescue.  We get a tie-in to Secret Wars with a character called the Beyonder that…in all honesty… Didn't make much sense.   The year ends with Daredevil taking down a new villain, the Saturion, and returning a locket to a blind man and then taking on another Spider-Man villain – the Vulture. There is also an epilogue with Black Crow was never followed on.  New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #220 July 1985 “Fog” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Quality counts less than we'd like. But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion.  So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing.  Wells, John.  American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964.  Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015.  Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read.  Wright, Bradford.  Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America.  Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001.  This is the revised edition.  Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2022.  The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021.    Cowsill, Alan et al.  DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2010.  Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to.  Dauber, Jeremy.  American Comics: A History.  New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022.  An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments.  An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

If today's episode feels like a private chat among friends, that's no accident. I became acquainted with Nikolas Draper-Ivey shortly after he was announced as the series artist for Static: Season One -- the title that kicked off the Milestone Returns line at DC Comics. We've been building a solid rapport ever since, but I could never get him to sit for an interview -- until now.In this conversation, I ask Nik about his journey so far. He explains his origins as an artist, how he got the attention of Milestone Media's Reginald Hudlin & Denys Cowan, and what it's meant to be trusted with a beloved character like Static for a new generation of readers. Static: Shadows of Dakota is now available in hardcover from DC Comics/Milestone Media, and you can purchase it here. About Nikolas Draper-Ivey:Nikolas Draper-Ivey is an American illustrator based outside of New York City. Born in Lansing, Michigan in 1991. He grew up in Detroit, where his father first exposed him to Japanese animation with Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. In his adolescence he discovered Shonen Jump Magazine.  This inspired him to pursue a career as a professional illustrator.  In 2010 he began his first semester at Savannah College Of Art & Design (SCAD) in Georgia as a Sequential Art major with a minor in Illustration. His style plays heavily on use of light and shadow and combines afro-futurist elements with hints of fantasy, hip-hop and punk culture and his love cinematography. His two biggest influences are Roger Deakins (Director of cinematography for Blade Runner 2049) and Takeshi Obata, (artist for Hikaru No Go, Death Note, BAKUMAN Platinum End).  In 2014, after moving to New York City, he had the chance to meet with his idols, Editor Koji Yoshida and mangaka Takeshi Obata who praised his early works as a “successful fusion of his Eastern and Western influences”.Currently, Draper-Ivey is working on his original work Dream Vesper, he firmly believes that his unique Afro-Asian futuristic art style can change the world For More from Comics Are Dope:Get This Week in Comics, our weekly e-mail newsletter: http://thisweekincomics.comSubscribe on YouTube: http://youtube.com/@comicsaredopeJoin our online Discussion Communities:Facebook - http://bjkicks.link/communityDiscord - http://bjkicks.link/discord

It's not a universal rule, but it is the neutral place from which comics lettering begins creatively and for the audience. I am not familiar enough with the origin. However, lettering by hand is labor intensive, consistency & clarity are rewarded and a foundation in communication is essential. If you are tasked with lettering by hand and you want it to be consistent, to keep the readers eye flowing through the work, you had better make it as easy on you and the reader as you can. Comic publishing came out of the tradition of sweat shops and production speed was critical. If you add serif to a font it can help with readability, as does proper use of capital and lower case letters. Cursive works to add fluidity and character. However, all three are more labor intensive, especially if you are looking for consistency. In addition, each has the potential to undermine the arts own use of line quality. The lettering is there to help the reader understand the story, not to slow the pace of the story. A legible underwhelming consistency serves this purpose. If the letters look the same most of the time, are quickly executed, tend to serve the pace and readability of a comic, then it creates aspects of a visual lexicon. Fluency in reading comics is about reading Sequential Art and this comes with a verity of elements. One being the letters. As soon as you set up the unassuming norm that doesn't effect the reader much, you can do things to the lettering to effect the storytelling. By making a word in BOLD it creates an accent, weight or metaphoric opportunity. You can change the word balloon to infer new information. You can color code the word or ballon to create identity connections with characters. You can add in serif, lower case or cursive to introduce layered context. You can also completely create new typography that serves sound effects or titles. The more you use these elements the more they loose their effectiveness in telling the story. If you are sparing (like with most of comics other visual elements) the more power and clarity they hold for the reader and the quicker you can produce a comic by hand. Many comics lettering is now done on the computer. This changes the laborious aspects some (not as much as we hope sometimes), but it doesn't change the lexicon already established much and the need for clarity and carful use of visual elements. It may not be the perfect font, but it's a practical tradition that will remain, as long as it serves the story, audience and creative process. I hope someone knows the origin of who and why. From quora.com  https://qr.ae/pG1qwN  https://qr.ae/pG1qw2 www.myfluentpodcast.com    vocabulary: labor intensive (time-consuming, burdensome, laborious) the tradition of sweat shops capital and lower case letters.  Cursive works to add fluidity and character. line quality not to slow the pace of the story. legible (readable, clear) Fluency in reading comics is about reading Sequential Art and this comes with a verity of elements. We also explore her comics upbringing, the education she got by volunteering at the Words and Pictures Museum of Sequential Art, the comics festivals she misses the most in Pandemic World, the time she impressed David B. with her French, how to tell family stories without alienating one's family, her side-project of sewing masks and biking around NYC to deliver them, the cut-out figure she submitted to the Mets, and more. “The push and pull between clarity and imagination is something I think about a lot in visual storytelling.” //I called up SfSx series artist Jen Hickman to celebrate the release of our SfSx: Volume 1: Protection trade paperback on July 22nd!Jen and I discuss our collaborative process, and Jen gives some insight into how they think about formatting sequential art, color as music, and an art school game that’s like exquisite corpse but with dicks. We also touch on Jen’s talent for “character acting” and one of my favorite examples of this from SfSx, how they made an air duct scene sex charged and hilarious, the role of time in comics especially smutty comics, and what kind of sex robot we'd want to fuck. // Jen Hickman is a visual storyteller and a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design's Sequential Art program. Past work includes TEST, Moth & Whisper, Jem and the Holograms, the Femme Magnifique anthology, and more. They get really excited about dystopian fiction, good coffee, and drawing hands.
