Returning to full-time painting after a break for family health issues, she describes dealing with imposter syndrome and how winning the BoldBrush contest and reconnecting with a gallery reassured her that she is indeed a professional artist. Her core practical advice for becoming a full-time artist is to maintain consistent studio hours, treat art like a real job, and avoid burning out by overworking, since regular rest actually helps the work improve. She also emphasizes the importance of putting yourself out there by showing up at events, talking to people, and learning basic marketing because even highly skilled artists won't sell if no one sees their work, while less technically skilled but visible artists often do well. Boston-based photographer Jim Dow talks about: The Boston art community (which is often connected to the art school and universities) and why he's lived there the great majority of his life (he lives in the house he grew up in); he's a dedicated Mass-hole- there's an edge to people there and you have break that edge; how he navigates random passersby when he's photographing for long sessions with his wooden large-view camera (his exposures range from a second to 20 minutes), with people always around him (here's a short video of a food stand guy singing tango where Jim was doing a shoot); his experiences with the difference between analog and digital photography, each of its pros and cons, and why he uses digital for documenting exhibitions which he's used for his teaching; suggestions for how to best edit documentation of your own work, which starts with photographing on your phone, to get a good sense of color that you can use as a template for your photo editing; how he used the NEA's selection process, of not using artist statements as part of the process for the initial rounds, as a tool to teach his students (including as a guest lecturer at Harvard) about how decisions are made; the Harvard student he had who wrote a study evaluating the value of photography based on economic models; two fully adults students he's had over the years, and how their stories impacted both Jim and his other, younger students; and how the odds of becoming monetarily successful artists are worse than becoming a professional baseball player, at least by one (possibly obsolete?) metric. What's the weirdest situation you've listened to Radio X in?Chris was off this week so Toby stepped into the breakfast shoes and had just about the silliest show you can imagine. We were also blessed with some awesome guests this week, gave away lots of tickets to upcoming gigs and became privy to Toby's terrifyingly accurate clairvoyance skills. The first guest we had this week was the incredibly talented Vicky McClure. She came into the studio to chat about the new season of Trigger Point. She spoke to Toby and the team about the unique experience of working with real-world bomb diffusers on set as they aim to make the show as close to reality as possible. What she didn't expect coming into the studio this week however, was to be playing a game that involved delivering electric shocks to producer John.Next, Russell Tovey popped into the studio to talk about his new book: Art School (in a book): A future artist's guide to contemporary Art. He spoke about the inaccessibility of the art world for an outsider and how intimidating it can be. He also said that art is for everyone and that his new book is a way of helping young people bridge this gap. Oh and he also chatted about silly things too like how insane it was voicing Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents.Finally we had the legendary Mumford & Sons in the studio chatting to Toby about a host of topics, ranging from their latest single featuring Hozier, to being onstage with Springsteen. It's a roller coaster of emotions in this interview, so hop on and buckle up! Trish interviews Shauna Rosenblum, Lytton Springs winemaker at Ridge Vineyards. The two met through Women in Wine Oregon when Trish needed a dynamic panelist for the organization's annual conference. She blew away the audience with her journey to winemaking and we're hoping this conversation will do the same. Shauna grew up in the vines so to speak, knowing how to test sugars at a very young age and getting very good at throwing bottles on the bottling line when she was 12. Winemaking was not what she wanted to do though, so she set her sights on art school and then became an art teacher. At that point, her parents started a new winery and Shauna came to "help out" and essentially, ended up helping Dad build the company. She faced a series of challenges a few years later, ones that made her want to quit the wine business all together. She talks about how some song lyrics from Frozen 2, nacho cheese and vodka, and perhaps a message from the universe made everything come into focus.
