Welcome back to Word Balloon , and welcome aboard for another episode of E-Motion Sickness: A Love Boat Re-Watch. We're starting right at the beginning with Season One, Episode One . The launch point for the whole Love Boat phenomenon: sunny escapism, rotating celebrity passengers, and just enough heartfelt romance to keep you watching even when the plot gets gloriously ridiculous. This first voyage brings a fun trio of guest stars: Jimmie Walker, Bonnie Franklin, and Suzanne Somers. Three very different flavors of late-70s pop culture all sharing the same floating matchmaking machine. And joining us as our featured passenger is Margaret Larkin from The Radio Girl Podcast, bringing sharp cultural context and great instincts for what's working, what's cheesy, and what still plays today.We're digging into the episode's storylines, the early-season vibe before everything locks into the familiar formula, and why this show became the ultimate “drop your brain at the gangplank” comfort TV. So grab your ticket, step onto the deck, and let's set sail
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Brady back on the show to discuss the 1986 thriller Manhunter. In this Michael Mann-directed prequel (but not really) to The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter (or Lecktor (?) for some reason) is asked by the FBI to help track down a serial killer (RIP to Tom Noonan). Hannibal should really be charging for all the killers he tracks down We dive deep into the history of Lecter and the difference between this moive and Red Dragon (the real prequel to Lambs). Enjoy the podcast!Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. The 3 hosts all work together and everyone else around them was getting really annoyed at all the movie talk, so they decided to annoy the world in podcast form.Check out previous seasons to hear them discuss 1982, 1983, 1984 & 1985 movies, as well as a full season of Love Boat episodes (if that is your thing). This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mac back on the show to discuss the 1986 war drama Platoon. Before Charlie Sheen was doing all the winning, he shipped off to Vietnam and did a lot less winning. Based on Oliver Stone's personal experiences, this movie continues the 1980s love affair with Vietnam that lasted well into the 90s. This movie is highly quotable and highly traumatizing, with an all-star cast that gets wiped out along the way. Watch this movie, and enjoy the podcast!!Jason, Andy and Dana will discuss a 1986 movie weekly, breaking down all the nonsense there within. It's Valentine's Day, a day that celebrates love and romance. And with that, you normally think of special songs, like love songs. For some reason, I often think of the Love Boat theme from the old TV show. It talks about love, that's exciting and new. My love is not so new, and to me, that's actually a good thing. Sure, when love is new, there is some excitement, but as time goes on and love changes, it becomes something more special. Perhaps not as romantic or passionate, but the feelings are much more intense. They’re deep. And to me, that's a good thing… Click Here To Subscribe Apple PodcastsSpotifyAmazon MusicGoogle PodcastsTuneIniHeartRadioPandoraDeezerBlubrryBullhornCastBoxCastrofyyd.deGaanaiVooxListen NotesmyTuner RadioOvercastOwlTailPlayer.fmPocketCastsPodbayPodbeanPodcast AddictPodcast IndexPodcast RepublicPodchaserPodfanPodtailRadio PublicRadio.comReason.fmRSSRadioVurblWe.foYandex jQuery(document).ready(function($) { 'use strict'; $('#podcast-subscribe-button-13292 .podcast-subscribe-button.modal-69928f5ddae52').on("click", function() { $("#secondline-psb-subs-modal.modal-69928f5ddae52.modal.secondline-modal-69928f5ddae52").modal({ fadeDuration: 250, closeText: '', }); return false; }); });
Originally recorded 02.05.26 Well, we did it! We made it to 100. A full C-Note of Bruce and Stephe rambling about things X and geeky. And, tonight, on our very special DOUBLE SIZED centennial episode, we finally land our white whale. We finally have the up-and-coming HUNTER ROBERTS on the show. Hunter gladly explains Taylor Swift to us in a manner we can understand. We talk Oscars. We talk Scream. We talk Disney After Dark. We talk the art and science of stand up comedy. Hell, we even talk Love Boat with a millennial. He gets us. Of course, we play what's on your desk. Hunter has lots to contribute. Just in case you were wondering, there is, in fact, MORE Eternals talk. Strap in, this is a good one.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome newcomer Herbie to the show to discuss the 1986 adventure comedy Big Trouble in Little China. Once again we dive into the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell pool for some mid 80s fun. This movie mixes all the adventure of Raiders and all the wire fu of a good martial arts movie to meld into something else entirely. The hunt is on to find a woman with green eyes, which, as it turns out, encompasses half the females in the cast (although colored contacts were needed for both) and Kurt Russell is at his all time beefiness with his iconic tank top. This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Shamus back on the show to discuss the 1986 action flick Top Gun. Tom Cruise leads this All-Star cast and their need for speed as they shoot down MIGs and spike volleyballs, all the while trying their best to show the world they're straight. Once again, we have a woman cast just so we aren't confused by the sexuality of the cast, but no one is really fooled. Ice Man, Goose, Maverick and Merlin all want to get into each other's cockpit. Welcome back to E-Motion Sickness, the Love Boat rewatch podcast where we chart the smooth seas, the rough waters, and the truly baffling creative decisions behind one of television's most unlikely hits.Today we're tackling the third Love Boat pilot film,the one where things finally start to feel like The Love Boat we remember. This time around, the puzzle pieces are coming together. Gavin MacLeod and Lauren Tewes finally join the other regular crew members, and for the first time the show feels like an actual ensemble instead of a rotating experiment. The chemistry improves, the tone settles down, and you can sense the producers getting closer to the formula that would eventually make the series a monster hit. That doesn't mean everything works, far from it. Some storylines still wobble, some guest stars are clearly testing the limits of what this show wants to be, and there are creative choices that didn't survive the voyage. But this pilot is fascinating because it's the turning point. It's where The Love Boat stops guessing and starts committing. We'll break down what finally clicks, what still doesn't, which performances rise above the material, and how this pilot set the course for the series going forward. So grab your captain's hat, steady your sea legs, and join us as we revisit a crucial moment in Love Boat history. All aboard.
This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Mike back on the show to discuss the 1986 fantasy flick The Highlander. In this time-spanning epic, a French dude plays a Scottish dude. A Scottish dude plays an Egyptian dude disguised as a Spanish dude, and Mr Krabs plays the bad guy. In a movie that purports that there can only be One, there does seem to be a lot of these guys kicking around. There are some women in this movie, but they are just there so there is no mistaking the sexuality of the protagonist, because if they weren't there, mistakes would be made. Enjoy the podcast. The results? Absolute Madness. In this unforgettable episode of Still Here Hollywood, Ted Lange, forever known as Isaac from The Love Boat, joins Steve Kmetko for a deep, funny, and brutally honest conversation about classic television, Hollywood power dynamics, racial inequality in entertainment, and the long game of creative survival. Ted takes us behind the scenes of one of the most iconic shows in television history, sharing stories about Gene Kelly, Diahann Carroll, Cloris Leachman, Howard Keel, and the revolving door of legendary guest stars that made The Love Boat a cultural phenomenon. He reveals what really went on when the cameras stopped rolling and how respect, chemistry, and mentorship made the cast a family. But this episode goes far beyond nostalgia. Ted opens up about the realities of being a Black actor in Hollywood, the battles he fought for equal treatment, fair representation, and meaningful storylines, and how he learned to “pivot” rather than become bitter. His stories about pay disparity, industry politics, and subtle discrimination are powerful, eye-opening, and still painfully relevant today. We also dive into Ted's remarkable second act as a writer, director, and playwright. From directing television to writing over 27 plays, including historical dramas about forgotten figures like John Hanson and Mary Bowser, Ted explains how storytelling can reclaim lost history and give voice to those erased from textbooks. His passion for uncovering untold stories turns this episode into something far bigger than a Hollywood interview. Plus, he shares hilarious and unexpected stories about working with Jenna Jameson on the “Ask Isaac” advice column, his Shakespeare adaptations, directing The Fall Guy, and the surprising friendships that shaped his career. This is a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and navigating Hollywood with intelligence, humor, and integrity. Ted Lange proves he is far more than a TV icon. He is a historian, a playwright, a director, and a truth teller who is very much still here. This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Logan back on the show to discuss the 1986 coming of age classic, Stand By Me. Quite by luck, we jump right back into the Rob Reiner filmography while he is still in all of hearts, and jump into Castle Rock (Oregon?) with this all time great coming of age movie as 4 chain smoking pre-teens go off to find a dead body. Like most Stephen King penned stories, it's not about the ending as much is it is about the journey, and boy, do these kids have a journey. Leeches and Trains and Handguns, oh my. In this one Doc gives a pianist drugs, there is a frank examination of mental health and we get a storyline about the trans experience that would kill a Republican at thirty paces. It's 1982 and the story feels so much more progressive than almost anything we get today. Did society start to crumble when we stopped doing Very Special Episodes? Is The Love Boat a step down after making your debut as a lead in Saturday Night Fever? And what horrible, upsetting and depressing true life facts connected to this week's co-stars will we discuss?Before that, a little bit of news and some questions get answered. Why is The Question objectivist? Do we miss anything about New York City? Are there LEGO conspiracies? Don't care about any of this? Skip to 41:38.Want your questions answered on the show? Send an email to ask.cinema.sangha@gmail.com and ask away, and ask about pretty much anything at all. set sail with its maiden voyage, and we're not easing into calm waters. In this debut episode, John Siuntres and Franco dive headfirst into Season One, Episode One of The Love Boat, the episode that launched a TV institution and defined late-'70s comfort viewing for decades to come. Joining them as this week's guest passenger is Margaret Larkin from The Radio Girl Podcast, bringing sharp insight, and zero tolerance for shallow nostalgia. Together, the crew breaks down:The episode's multiple guest-star storylines and how the rotating-romance format was established right out of the gateWho these guest stars really were beyond their Love Boat appearances—career highs, unexpected turns, and pop-culture contextBehind-the-scenes facts, network strategy, and why this show worked when it absolutely shouldn't haveWhat holds up, what's already dated, and what still weirdly worksThis isn't a breezy recap. It's a smart, funny, occasionally skeptical re-watch that treats The Love Boat as both a time capsule and a television machine built to last. Climb aboard. The champagne is cheap, emotions are high, and the seas may get choppy.
Dana and David welcome Teri Hatcher for a candid, funny cruise through it all: she tells the wild story of tagging along to a Love Boat audition—and booking the role over her best friend—shares what she splurged on when the money finally hit, and opens up about dating and how she's finding her way into comedy. Teri explains how Lois & Clark made acting feel like a real career, drops stories from hosting SNL and leading Desperate Housewives, and—true to form—jokes about feeling like a “hick,” having an “average vagina,” and why her boobs are “real and spectacular” (even if Jerry Seinfeld isn't convinced). This episode is a little delayed but look at that runtime! And no, it's not all The Love Boat, but there's plenty of that. On this episode of Across the Omniverse we watch a season one episode of the primetime broadcast anthology show from the 1970s, featuring guest stars like Bill Bixby and Milton Berle. We talk about what a creep Doc is, the weird way you can get from Bixby to the Trump administration, and how Charo overexposed herself into obscurity.Before that we have news, like the winners of the Critic's Choice Awards, and we go long on Stranger Things season 5 and the finale. How long? Let's just say that you should skip from 47:01 to 1:45:05 if you don't want to get spoiled or just don't care about the topic. And that's a good point to start at if you want to simply get to the The Love Boat.Want your questions answered on the show?
