"This episode continues our deep dive into the 'Time Runs Out' arc, covering *Avengers* #36 and *New Avengers* #25. In *Avengers* #36, we witness the emotional return of Cannonball and Smasher with their new baby, Josiah, as the wider Avengers team, led by Sunspot, gears up for a desperate, one-way mission across the dying multiverse. Odinson, Hyperion, Starbrand, Abyss, and the Ex Nihilii brave the unknown via the Auger, facing the ultimate sacrifice. Meanwhile, in *New Avengers* #25, the fugitive Illuminati are on the run and immediately thrust into crisis, scrambling to access Tony Stark's files while evading capture. Amadeus Cho is interrogated by a determined Susan Richards, and the stark reality of the incursions hits home with a devastating message from Black Panther: Wakanda has fallen. Join us as we explore these two converging narratives of heroism, sacrifice, and the terrifying approach of multiversal collapse!"

Seven years after Toni Morrison's death, we're experiencing what the critic Parul Sehgal describes as a “wave of Morrisonia.” Eleven of her novels are being reissued by her publisher. There's a new book of criticism about her novels. You can feel the effort to shore up her legacy. It's an understandable impulse. This is the woman who wrote “Beloved,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel that, as Parul writes, “invented a language for unassimilable pain, for the horrors of the Middle Passage, of bondage and its systematized torture and sexual brutality.” The book can feel like a kind of miracle. And Morrison, therefore, like a kind of saint. But sanctification — both Parul and Wesley fear — has its own risks. It puts Morrison up in the sky, where we can't quite reach her. Too far away to touch. So in this episode of Cannonball, that's what Parul, Wesley and their editor, Sasha Weiss, set out to do. Touch Morrison's work — as she wanted us to. HEADLINE: The Cannonball Rule vs. Anti-Access Denial GUEST AUTHOR: Jerry HendrixSUMMARY: Hendrix explains how the historical "cannonball rule," which limited territorial waters to the range of shore batteries, is being challenged by modern long-range missiles. Nations like China and Russia use "anti-access/area denial" strategies to extend their sovereignty far beyond international norms, effectively claiming vast areas like the South China Sea. This strategy aims to push the U.S. Navy away to prevent intervention in regional conflicts. Hendrix emphasizes the necessity of "Freedom of Navigation" operations, where U.S. warships physically sail through disputed waters to legally and militarily reject these excessive territorial claims.1904
Brett and Mark welcome Cannonball scofflaws Jeff Weiss, Christopher Michaels, and Wesley Vigh to discuss failed Cannonball entries, 100+mph drifting with magnificent showers of sparks coming from the back of the car, and the best and worst things to say to a cop when you get pulled over. All this and much more on this week's Driven Radio Show! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Cannonball is taking a short break and will be back very soon. In the meantime, listen to this special conversation:Last November, Wesley spent an evening with Michelle Obama to celebrate the release of “The Look,” her new book about fashion and the power of style. It's a heavy text – weighing in at about 4.12 pounds (Wesley checked). That makes it great for coffee tables. But it also reflects the weight of what it meant to Michelle Obama, as First Lady, to be looked at. Every outfit carried meaning and significance, and she knew it. Together, Wesley and Michelle reflect on her approach to fashion from day one in the White House, her time in the East Wing, and some of her most memorable looks.Thoughts? Freedom of Navigation and Challenging Excessive Maritime Claims: Colleague Jerry Hendrix explains the historical "cannonball rule" for defining territorial waters and how modern nations like China and Russia are challenging these norms with excessive maritime claims, detailing how US Navy Freedom of Navigation operations serve to physically contest these claims and maintain the "free sea" doctrine. 1912
Cannonball is off this week for the holiday. But I wanted to share something with you from our friends over at The Interview. It's a conversation that my colleague David Marchese had awhile back with one of our biggest stars, Eddie Murphy. I've been thinking about it recently because there's a new documentary about Murphy that just came out on Netflix -- and I highly recommend this conversation as a kind of companion listen over your long weekend. Murphy reveals a surprising side of himself that I hadn't heard before. Hope you enjoy it, and see you back here next week! Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. A chef's recent email to Max has Jordan concerned, and then the fellas talk dining at new restaurants on the scene, and it's all Brentwood cougars, sweet butters, the Pasadena schlep, shrimp balls, a salt issue, the spoonable pasta, poor Bill Bush, booze enhancing food, and let's stop with the "American bistro" thing.
On Episode 32 of our show "Grindhouse Pizzeria" which is dedicated to all things encompassing various Grindhouse, Drive-In, and Exploitation genres; we will be reviewing and dissecting a true classick of the Roger Corman era with 1975's "DEATH RACE 2000". Directed by Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul and Cannonball!) and starring an array of icons including David Carradine, Sylvester Stallone, Mary Woronov, Don Steele, and many more. This is a legendary cult film, which spawned a much belated sequel in 2017 titled Death Race 2050 and a remake starring Jason Statham in 2008 (which had its own series of straight to video sequels). It's a truly ridiculous satire tale of a dystopian future where a the new national sport is a cross country road race where the drivers collect points by running down pedestrians. Sound wacky? It has to be seen to be believed! Our discussion is headed off by our regular hosts Tom Komisar and Cameron Scott! Join the two of them as they take a deep dive dissection of this slice of fried gold exploitation goodness as only Roger Corman could deliver. Come on in at the Grindhouse Pizzeria, pull up a chair, and grab yourself a slice! ***There are some audio hiccups (as the weather was up against us at the time of recording) that we tried to edit around and clean up the best we could. It is of a lesser quality than we usually deliver, but we hope it doesn't distract you from your listening pleasures. We truly apologize for this inconvenience.*** "Here he comes: Machine Gun Joe! The Long Island Railroad's “Cannon Ball” made its first trip to Montauk from Jamaica, NY in 1890, and operated until the 1970s. The continuous service was provided on weekday afternoons from Long Island City until 1951 when service was then provided from Penn Station. Originally, the Cannon Ball was a train composed entirely of parlor cars – the epitome of luxury – and many regarded the Cannon Ball as a prestigious way to arrive in the Hamptons. But the real conversation of the Cannonball starts with the history of the LI Rail Road. Most of the effort out here was in the 1890's, and a lot of it grew out of one man's dream, Austin Corbin, who was a very wealthy banker in New York. He became President of the Long Island Railroad in 1881. As soonas he got onto this job, he had a lot of problems because he inherited a railroad that was bankrupt and actually had been formerly three different railroads. Once he put those together after about a year or so, he turned to the fulfillment of his dream and that was, not necessarily to build a railroad to the end of Long Island. His objective was to shorten the distance by water, over the ocean, between England and New York.

Grunge music emerged from the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s, replacing the outrageous styles and slick solos of hair metal with grinding guitars, growling vocals, and ample ennui. The so-called Seattle Sound broke into the mainstream via bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Hole, and others, before fading away after just a few years. While the genre's cultural footprint may have been brief, if you were a disaffected young person in 1990s America, grunge was likely part of the soundtrack of your life. Now, more than 30 years after we all pretended not to care, the Great Pop Culture Debate is donning our flannel and attempting to name the Best Grunge Song. Songs discussed: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, “Man in the Box” by Alice in Chains, “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” by Smashing Pumpkins, “Even Flow” by Pearl Jam, “Cannonball” by Breeders, “Everlong” by Foo Fighters, “Glycerine” by Bush, “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden, “Down by the Water” by PJ Harvey, “Doll Parts” by Hole, “Heart-Shaped Box” by Nirvana, “Today” by Smashing Pumpkins, “Pretend We're Dead” by L7, “Seether” by Veruca Salt, “Interstate Love Song” by Stone Temple Pilots Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists and fellow 90s teens Jim Czadzeck, Joelle Boedecker, and Karissa Kloss as they discuss and debate 16 songs that spawned from the Seattle Sound. Play along at home by finding the listener bracket here. Make a copy for yourself, fill it out, and see if your picks match up with ours! Cannonball would have turned 97 this month were he still with us. His records were some of the first I collected - there are so many and so varied, his dedication to recording live sets for his albums and playing with countless amazing musicians, infusing politics into his music and his "raps" in-between songs, is all legendary. I had not realized until now that all of this was done in such a short amount of time - he passed away at the age of 46, one year younger than I am now. To have played and recorded with the legends (Miles et al) then go on to create a massive discography and universe of his own music - along with his brother Nat - is an astonishing feat. Salute!
