We sit down with veteran comics artist Howard Simpson (who also works under the pen name Poppy) to explore his diverse career that began after earning his BFA from Tyler School of Arts and working as a commercial artist during the 1980s for major clients including Action News, Bantam Books, Sony, and various Fortune 500 companies. Howard shares his transition from commercial work and fanzine contributions to breaking into professional comics with DC, working on titles like Green Lantern, The Outsiders, Secret Origins, and Young All-Stars, as well as inking Dark Horse's Captain Crusader. We dive into his prolific 1990s work across multiple publishers including First Publishing's Grimjack and Munden's Bar, Heroic Comics' Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt, Icicle, and League of Champions, Topps' Ray Bradbury Comics: Martian Chronicles, and his extensive contributions as penciller, inker, and background artist for Acclaim's Valiant imprint series like Turok, plus his work illustrating Timon and Pumbaa stories for Disney Adventures. Everyone deserves a little cheer and hope during the holidays; even dare I say a little comfort and joy.  In this holiday episode, the Justice Leage save 2 worlds about to collide. But afterwards they decide to enjoy some time off. Flash plays Santa, along with the help of the Ultra-Humanite, for a group of orphans in Central City. Their hearts are set on a DJ Rubber Duckie and Flash and Ultra-Humanite put aside their differences to make their wish come true. Flash even gives Ultra-Humanite a piece of his childhood to enjoy in prison. Green Lantern and Hawkgirl have fun playing in the snow of the ice planet. But Hawkgirl wants to celebrate. They fly out into the galaxy. She has a world where she is well known and celebrates like she does. Her idea of celebration is drinking and fighting. She and Green Lantern celebrate and have a bar fight with the aliens. All is well. Superman takes the lonely Martian Manhunter home to Smallville for Christmas. Clark's love of the holiday is clear and his parents welcome J'onn with open arms. Elliot's career as a writer began with a colorful story about a Green Lantern comic that he wrote for a history class at Brandeis University, from which he graduated as the class Valedictorian, despite only getting a B+ on his comic book paper! The first comic spawned 15 more years of writing comics for DC, mostly Superman, making him a cultural icon for millions of young people who eagerly anticipated the next issue each month. Those 15 years were capped off with two best-selling "Superman" novels written with his own storyline but timed for release by DC in conjunction with the first two Superman movies. Between those novels he made a move to New Hampshire, taught at Waterville Academy, bought a home, bought a horse; adopted a dog and ran for Congress, among other things. When the campaign was over he went back to writing and has never stopped.

In the second part of DBB's Hollywood Week, we welcome writer-producer Marc Guggenheim to discuss his remarkable career spanning comics, film, television, and novels. After an internship at Marvel, Marc worked as a lawyer for a time, before transitioning to TV to become one of the architects of the Arrowverse. Marc reflects on his comics work for Marvel and DC, including The Flash and Amazing Spider-Man, his experience with the 2011 Green Lantern movie and what he learned from that project, and how he and his co-creators developed Arrow as the foundation for what became a decade-spanning shared TV universe. We explore his work on Legends of Tomorrow and how the show evolved from a more serious tone to embracing its wild, time-traveling absurdity.
