Aaron and Bob are holding down the fort while Joey earns his first Father of the Year Award, John transforms into a human car, and Steve is busy talking to Elijah Wood! - Wolverine: Enemy of the State vol.3 #20-24 (2024) av Mark Millar & JRJr. (med the Hand mm.) Hidden Springs has such a wonderfully strange premise: retired Hollywood legends protecting a baby kaiju. Where did the initial spark for this story come from, and when did you realize this was the right mix of heart, comedy, and monster chaos? 2. The cast of characters is incredibly eclectic, from a rocker reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne to a classic Hollywood beauty, a trailblazing female director, a stand-up comedian, and a career TV star. How did you approach building such different personalities and making them feel like a believable found family? 3. Nil Vendrell Pallach is handling the art. What did Nil bring to the project visually that made them the perfect collaborator for a story that moves between comedy, nostalgia, and kaiju action? 4. There's something inherently funny about ageing celebrities being the only ones capable of protecting a world-ending monster. What interested you about pairing the idea of aging, fading fame, and second chances with something as huge and destructive as a kaiju? 5. With all these Hollywood types, I was reminded of Caccoon, about a group of old folks who encounter an alien eggs that give them youth, with your new series on the way do you think this the old person encountering sci-fi elements is an underused corner of fiction? 6. What made dark horse the right publisher for this? 7. You've written everything from Judge Dredd to Petrol Head. Where does Hidden Springs sit for you creatively? Does it tap into a different storytelling muscle compared to your other work? 8. (Fun question) Your heroes include a rocker, a comedian, a movie star, and a legendary beauty escorting a baby kaiju across the countryside. If you had to add one more retired celebrity archetype to the team, who would it be and what ridiculous skill would they bring to the kaiju babysitting mission?

As the House of Slaughter's ailing Old Dragon enters his final days, Cecilia Slaughter and the other Heads gather to determine his successor. Deadly ambitions begin to take shape as the House and the Order prepare for a new legacy to begin — and the conflict will no doubt be lethal in this all-new miniseries set in the world of Something is Killing the Children! Can the House of Slaughter survive a new Dragon coming into power?  New Titans by Tate Brombal, Sami Basri, Adriano Lucas, and Tom Napolitano. WHO ARE THE NEW TITANS? But when his town is discovered by outsiders, Jack suddenly becomes the one thing standing in the way of those who hope to kill his family for good. Batgirl by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano. Hold on to your seats, clutch your pearls, and rejoice in celebration because Cassandra Cain is taking center stage in her first solo Batgirl series in nearly two decades! When a deadly group of assassins shows up to kill Cassandra, Lady Shiva comes to the rescue, and they must put their complicated past aside and work together as mother and daughter to ensure they make it out alive. Unfortunately, things are never as easy as they seem, and Cass must embark on a jaw-dropping, martial-arts filled adventure in her quest for truth and justice... and revenge?! It's a Batgirl book like never before, so join us as we dive into the psyche of one of Gotham's deadliest fighters, while exploring her deep and complex relationship with her mother. Green Lantern Dark by Tate Brombal, Werther Dell'Edera, Giovanna Niro, and Tom Napolitano. On a post-apocalyptic Earth overrun by monsters, the battle between good and evil ended long ago — and evil won. Now darkness prevails as humanity struggles to survive in the corrupted wasteland that remains. Only one hero is said to haunt what's left of our shadowed cities, the one who wields the mystical green flame that could return light to a dark world--The Green Lantern. But she's been missing for years, and on the isolated island of New England, Solomon Grundy's undead army only grows larger and more powerful every night... Celebrated horror artist of smash hit Something is Killing the Children Werther Dell'Edera teams with rising-star writer Tate Brombal (House of Slaughter) to bring you a chilling tale of desperation, hope, and resurrection from the bitter remains of the fan-favorite Tangent Universe!

Todd McFarlane on Spawn

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

Well, this is a surprise. Todd McFarlane returns to the podcast to discuss why he's suddenly switching up the creative rosters on several Spawn universe titles. Starting with issue 376, friend of the show Matthew Rosenberg will script alongside artist Stephen Segovia. Roseberg will also serve as writer on the sibling series, King Spawn, with Thomas Nachlik on art. In Gunslinger Spawn #54, writer Erica Schultz joins returning artist Carlo Barberi. And starting today, She-Spawn #1 launches with Gail Simone as writer and Ig Guara as artist. He's said it before, and he states it emphatically on this week's show: Todd McFarlane sees Spawn as his creative child, and as all parents want for their kids, Todd hopes to see him live long after he's gone. To secure that reality, he needs to let go of the reins. So, today, he's reflecting on his favorite comics and how regime changes propelled those books into legend. Before all that, however, we banter back and forth about this past weekend's Free Comic Book Day, and the awe-inspiring Charity Sketch Cover Auction Four Color Fantasies pulled off on Saturday, raising nearly $12,000 for the Literacy Volunteers of the Winchester Area. We discuss how we took that radical energy and moved it into our Comic Book Club on Sunday, and then work both events into the theme of community and how it bolsters the comic book industry, which leads directly into what Todd McFarlane is doing with his baby, Spawn. This week, it's all about the power of comics. Todd McFarlane details why he's always happy to have others play in his playground, how he still has an ending for Spawn even though he never wants to use it, and why there are nuances to that tired artist vs. writer debate. Spawn #376 arrives in shops from Image Comics on June 3rd, with Final Order Cutoff happening this upcoming Monday, the 11th.  If you want to continue our discussion with Todd McFarlane, you can find him on BlueSky and Instagram, as well as his Website. This Week in Horror History for May 4–10 dives into a killer week of horror movie history, slasher movie anniversaries, cult horror films, horror comics, survival horror games, and classic monster adventure. This episode revisits the bloody legacy of Friday the 13th, the 2005 remake of House of Wax, the serial-killer comic-book mystery Nailbiter, the retro survival-horror game Crow Country, and this week's Deep-Cut Spotlight: The Burning, one of the most brutal and underrated 1980s camp slasher movies.Inside this episode:May 7, 2014 — Nailbiter #1A modern horror comic favorite from Image Comics introduces Buckaroo, Oregon—a small town with a terrifying reputation for producing serial killers. If you love crime horror, serial killer stories, creepy small-town mysteries, and horror comics, this one belongs on your radar.Where to read (U.S., this week): Image Comics, Kindle/Comixology, and collected editions from Image and major booksellers.May 6, 2005 — House of WaxThe 2005 House of Wax remake brings glossy 2000s horror, slasher-movie chaos, and a gruesome wax museum setting together in one sticky nightmare. A cult favorite of the era, it mixes road-trip horror, trapped-tourist terror, melting bodies, and brutal setpieces.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Tubi; rent/buy on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.May 9, 1980 — Friday the 13thOne of the most important slasher movies of all time hits theaters and turns Camp Crystal Lake into horror history. From isolated cabins and doomed counselors to the birth of a franchise that would make Jason Voorhees a horror icon, Friday the 13th helped define the modern summer-camp slasher.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Paramount+; rent/buy on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.May 9, 2024 — Crow CountryThe indie horror game Crow Country brings retro survival-horror atmosphere back with eerie puzzles, abandoned amusement-park dread, old-school tension, and modern genre polish. Fans of Resident Evil-style horror games, PlayStation-era survival horror, creepy theme parks, and indie horror games should take note.Where to play (U.S., this week): Steam, PlayStation Store, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.Deep-Cut Spotlight — May 8, 1981: The BurningThis week's Deep-Cut Spotlight heads back to summer camp for The Burning, a grimy 1981 slasher packed with Tom Savini effects, campfire trauma, garden shears, and one of the most infamous raft massacre scenes in horror history. Overshadowed in the original slasher boom, it has since become a true cult horror classic and one of the essential 1980s camp slasher films.Where to watch (U.S., this week): Tubi, The Roku Channel, MGM+; rent/buy on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.Birthday Roll:Lance Henriksen, David Keith, Kevin Peter Hall, and Meg Foster.Weekly Recommendation — May 7, 1999: The MummyFor a lighter but still monster-packed pick, revisit The Mummy, the 1999 Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz adventure that revived Universal monster energy with cursed tombs, scarab swarms, ancient rituals, undead horror, and blockbuster pulp fun. It is the perfect date-window recommendation for fans of classic monster movies, action horror, Universal horror, and summer adventure films.Where to watch (U.S., this week): HBO Max, Peacock; rent/buy on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

If you've ever wanted to read a comic that leaves you completely confused—but completely hooked at the same time—Red Roots #1 might be exactly that kind of experience. Jace breaks down the oversized debut issue from Image Comics and the Skybound Entertainment imprint, written and illustrated by Lorenzo De Felici with lettering by Russ Wooton. From a brutal, near-silent infiltration filled with violence and atmosphere to a seemingly normal schoolteacher whose life spirals into something far stranger, the issue presents two completely different narratives that feel disconnected—but clearly aren't. Jace explores how the visual storytelling carries the weight, how the lack of answers is intentional, and why the mystery surrounding the severed heads, the red roots, and the final page twist makes this one of the most intriguing debut issues in recent memory. This is a spoiler discussion that leans into the confusion—in the best possible way.

When you look back now, how do you understand that relationship differently? One of the most striking ideas in the book is the notion that “our bodies belong to the authority figure.” How did unpacking that belief shape the emotional core of this memoir? Everything in Color is deeply personal, especially in how it portrays your relationship with your husband and your child. What was it like sharing drafts with your husband as you were creating the book? Your journey raises big questions about faith, doubt, and identity. Did you find yourself arriving at answers while making the book, or is it more about learning to live with the questions? The book touches on major shared moments like 9/11 and the COVID lockdown. How did anchoring your personal story to these larger events help shape the narrative? There's a powerful shift in the book where love, especially through motherhood, reframes everything as sacred. When did that realization first begin to take hold for you? This is a massive and ambitious work. Was it always envisioned at this scale, and how long did it take you to bring it to life? The title Everything in Color feels like a mission statement for the book. At what point did you know that was the right way to describe this journey? The artwork blends intimacy with emotional weight throughout. How did you approach pairing your visual storytelling with such vulnerable subject matter?

Jace takes a look at Fireborn #1 from Image Comics, breaking down how the issue connects to the Lost Fantasy universe while evaluating how effectively it functions as a standalone story. With discussion of the creative work from Curt Pires, Franklin Jonas, Patrick Mulholland, Mark Dale and Micah Myers, the episode examines the structure of the oversized debut, the introduction of Aaron Hilberg and his connection to the dragon egg, and how the pacing benefits from the extended page count. The conversation also explores how the character's attitude is grounded in his personal circumstances, the balance between action and setup, and whether the issue establishes a strong foundation moving forward. Additional context is provided on the early market reaction, including the sellout and speculation, along with whether the demand reflects genuine reader interest or short-term attention.

It's a topic we discuss a lot. When you love comics, you eventually want to make them. Curt Pires heard Franklin Jonas professing his love for the medium on a podcast. Immediately, he recognized a kindred spirit. Pires invited Jonas to play. The result is the new Image Comics series Fireborn, spinning out of Pires' massive comic book playground, Lost Fantasy. Maybe you've already read the logline: Fireborn is Invincible meets How to Train Your Dragon meets Absolute Batman. Whoa, okay. That's a lot, but what does that actually mean? On this week's podcast, we get into it with Franklin Jonas and Curt Pires. We break down those other stories and consider what they owe to Spider-Man and his Amazing Fantasy #15 debut. Where do you begin when creating an F'd up Peter Parker? And did we mention the hot takes? Franklin Jonas has them! We give the musician the space to profess his passion for comics, champion his all-time favorite Daredevil run, and explain why not enough of you are reading the current JSA monthly written by Jeff Lemire. In Fireborn, Aaron Hillburg is a rich kid who runs face-first into Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. He answers the call to action, but when will he reject it? With great power there must also come great responsibility. One issue in, we got part one of that statement. Is part two coming? Let's geek out about what comics can do that no TV pitch can ever contain. Fireborn #1 is out now from Image Comics. It's written by Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, illustrated by Patrick Mulholland, colored by Mark Dale, and lettered by Micah Myers. Make sure you're following Franklin Jonas on Instagram and Curt Pires on BlueSky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsors Everyone loves to talk and debate about comics, but few people get to see what it's actually like behind the scenes. Now, IDW Publishing is changing that with the launch of IDW Studios. Comics don't just happen. Artists will them from nothing. As you'll hear from Henry Barajas and Rachel Merrill in this week's podcast, comics arrive at your local comic book shop through tremendous persistence and imagination. The next time you cross your shop's threshold, possibly to grab a copy of Barajas and Merrill's Death to Pachuco, out now in trade paperback from Image Comics, take a moment to thank the makers. Each book on the rack is a tiny miracle. In Death to Pachuco, Barajas and Merrill tap into history, detailing the 1943 Sleepy Lagoon Murder Trial and the Zoot Suit Riots. It's a Chicano noir, heavily inspired by classic Hollywood tales, but springing from a perspective frequently silenced or ignored. Their private eye, Ricardo “Ricky” Tellez, fancies himself a Sherlock Holmes type, complete with a nearly debilitating drug addiction. He's caught in the racial tensions boiling over during wartime Los Angeles, hunting for a killer, while navigating a femme fatale. This week on the podcast, we chat with Barajas and Merrill about balancing fact and fiction, style and reality, and why humanity frequently allows fear steer its actions. We discuss the magnificent amount of will and persistence it took to materialize Death to Pachuco and how it feels to see it collected in trade paperback, finally. Death to Pachuco is written and lettered by Henry Barajas, illustrated by Rachel Merrill, and colored by Lee Loughridge. The book featured several variant covers from folks like Sarah Gordon (see episode art), Tula Lotay, Ben Passmore, David Lapham, and others. Make sure you're following Henry Barajas on BlueSky and Instagram, and Rachel Merrill on BlueSky and Instagram. Startup superhero universes were a dime a dozen in the Iron Age, but Comics' Greatest World was $16 for 16! Each issue of this weekly miniseries introduced a brand new character theoretically poised to take the industry by storm, but while heroes like X and Ghost would go on to become the stars of ongoing series (and Barb Wire even made the leap to a major motion picture), most of them languished in obscurity. Dark Horse tried very hard to make their first foray into mainstream superheroes stand out amongst 1993's oversaturated market by emphasizing worldbuilding and backstory, but to no avail. In this episode, we visit the fictional cities of Arcadia, Golden City, Steel Harbor, and the Vortex of Cinnebar Flats to check out what went right, what went wrong, the limits of “mystery box” storytelling, and why all of Team CGW's carefully laid-out environmental storytelling just didn't grab fans the way Image Comics did.Justin rented and watched Pamela Anderson's Barb Wire for the sake of this podcast, and if that kind of commitment and dedication doesn't make you want to support the show at patreon.com/ironageofcomics, we don't know what will!

Today we travel to India to speak with Aditya Bidikar upon the release of his anticipated Tiny Onion produced Mini Series-In Your Skin. The story centers around the culture of celebrity and the obsession that an overzealous fan can create while idolizing their Hero without knowing that their favorite person may be torn themselves. We meet Priyanka who loves Bollywood star Ayesha, but feels at a loss when she suddenly announces her retirement. Sensing a void, Priyanka makes a choice she feels may be the only way to step In her Skin (pun intended). Aditya has lettered some of our favorite books whether they are Department of Truth, Worldtr33, Swamp Thing, and soon joining Darcy Van Poelgeest in the graphic novel The Cutting Garden for Image Comics. He has been holding this particular story deep at vest for 7 years and we talk about the transition from Letterer to Writer and how the craft is best known for pacing, but yet understanding the intensity in the creation of this Body Horror suspense tale.Written and Lettered by Aditya BidikarArtwork by SomColors by Francesco Segala

As someone who works in music, where rhythm, pacing, and emotion are everything, did that background influence how you approached writing Fireborn—especially in terms of momentum, dialogue, or how scenes “flow” on the page? Aaron Hillburg is introduced as a “rich-kid failson,” which is such a loaded archetype—what made him the right entry point for a story that quickly becomes this massive, magical chase? The dragon egg bonding to Aaron is such a striking image—what did you want that relationship to represent, both visually and emotionally, as the series unfolds? Patrick Mulholland's art brings a kinetic, almost explosive energy to the concept—how closely did you collaborate on visual storytelling, especially with something as wild as a floating dragon egg? 11:10 Dark Reign war machine 11:45 Fear Itself This feels like a story about inheritance in more ways than one—family, power, responsibility—what themes were most important for you to explore through Aaron's journey? For readers who haven't touched Lost Fantasy before, how accessible is Fireborn as a jumping-on point, and what kind of experience were you aiming to deliver in issue #1? If Aaron had to survive in New York for 24 hours before the egg bonded to him, what's the most “failson” decision he'd make that would somehow make everything worse?

Today on Word Balloon, I'm talking with a creator who's carving out his own lane between nostalgia, genre chaos, and straight-up adrenaline storytelling, Curt Pires. From his breakout fantasy hit Lost Fantasy at Image Comics: a monster-slaying throwback with serious momentum thanks to artist Luca Casalanguida. To the hyperviolent sexy cosmic trip parody of Galactic at DSTLRY with Amilcar Pinna, Curt's work is all about big swings and bold humor. Now he's leveling up again with Fireborn, co-written with musician Franklin Jonas and drawn by Patrick Mulholland. It's a neon-charged, '90s comics and 32-bit video game fever dream about a billionaire's reckless son fused with a dragon egg in the heart of New York City. We'll talk about the evolution of his storytelling, the energy behind these books, and why Fireborn might be his wildest ride yet.
