At the beginning of 2025, I mentioned wanting to see the return of Greg Rucka and Michael Lark's LAZARUS. Well, 2025 finally delivered something good for a change. LAZARUS is back, and its editor, Alejandro Arbona, is here to talk about one of the best comic books Image Comics has ever published. Also, we talk about the breathtaking horror one-shot Alejandro wrote, LAKE YELLOWWOOD SLAUGHTER. Goats Flying Press is its publisher. And you can still get in on the Kickstarter campaign. Click here to get to it.

This week on Collecting Issues, we're talking about The One Hand and The Six Fingers—two five-issue series from Image Comics (2024) by Ram V, Dan Watters, Laurence Campbell, Sumit Kumar, Lee Loughridge, and Tom Muller.Set in the gritty, retro-future city of Neo Novena, these stories unfold from two perspectives: a weary detective facing a familiar case on the eve of retirement, and a brilliant student who wakes up with memories of a murder. What starts as a ritual killing slowly unspools into something much stranger—where nothing is real, everything loops, and the world might just be a cage. We're talking:Murder, glyphs, and glitching cogsNoir tropes used with purpose—not ironyRobots doing people jobs, people thinking like machinesHow these two comics were written in conversation, not collaborationThe big existential ending (and why it works)If you like Blade Runner, The Matrix, Memento, or Dark City, this one's worth your time. What part of his history were you most excited to dig into, and what makes your take on the Goblin stand out?Norman's been a villain, a businessman, a politician, and sometimes even a twisted version of a hero. How do you approach writing a character who's constantly shifting between personas?Your Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone series introduces a walled-off wasteland, kaiju lore, and the myth of a half-man, half-kaiju survivor. How did you approach building suspense and worldbuilding in this isolated, almost post-apocalyptic setting?Writing Godzilla means balancing spectacle with humanity. What's your approach to telling grounded stories in the shadow of kaiju-level destruction? Now onto Blink and You'll Miss It — the tone and premise feel so personal and unique. How did this story come together, and what inspired you to tell a love story with a sci-fi twist? There's a big emotional core in Blink and You'll Miss It, but also some wild time-manipulation ideas. How did you balance the heart with the high-concept hook? You're juggling three very different projects — a Marvel villain origin, a giant monster epic, and a bittersweet romantic mini. How do you shift your mindset between such wildly different tones and genres? All three books deal with identity in some form — Norman's fractured psyche, a couple navigating time, and characters caught between humanity and monsters. Is that a theme you're consciously exploring across your work, or something that just naturally emerges?Fun one to wrap things up: If the Green Goblin got his own kaiju-sized glider and showed up in the Godzilla universe… how long would he last, and which monster would absolutely wreck him first?
Once again, fear and dread shroud the world outside our window. Chris Condon and Jeffrey Alan Love offer assistance with their terrifyingly relatable News from the Fallout, a zombie story that chews on the military-industrial complex, belief in apocalyptic certainty, and humanity's stumbling response. You can read their series as a scary, thrilling, atmospherically rich shock-fest or recognize its narrative as our past, present, but hopefully not future. The zombie genre has served humanity well since Night of the Living Dead hit drive-ins in 1968. The Walking Dead subgenre allows creators to house all their political anxieties into a thrilling narrative, offering cathartic relief to their hungry audience. When there's no more doom to scroll, the dead will stalk your imagination. Of course, News from the Fallout's shambling creatures is not necessarily zombies. They're the Rotten, poor fools who followed orders and got their face full of some unknown agent after a military test goes wrong...or right. Only Otis Fallows was smart enough to slap on a gas mask and flee across the Nevada desert. With beasts on his heels, the soldier finds solace in a diner full of patrons. They should all listen to reason and band together against a ravenous horde. Tune in next month for the second issue. Until then, enjoy our hearty conversation with Chris Condon and Jeffrey Alan Love. We discuss George R. Romero's zombie legacy, the Criterion Collection, and how it feels to work in a terrifying narrative that doesn't look much different than what we see daily on TV and our phones. News from the Fallout looks unlike anything else in comic shops right now, thanks to Jeffrey Alan Love's incredible work, which embraces distortion and atmosphere to achieve emotional reality. So, naturally, we gotta dig into the whole look, too. News from the Fallout #1 is out now from Image Comics. It's written by Chris Condon, illustrated by Jeffrey Alan Love, lettered by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and designed by Michael Tivey. Follow Chris Condon on Bluesky. Go behind the scenes of SYFY's haunting new series Revival in this exclusive interview with showrunners Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce. Adapted from Tim Seeley and Mike Norton's acclaimed Image Comics series, Revival isn't your typical zombie tale—instead, the dead return to life just as they were, sparking a chilling murder mystery in the heart of rural Wisconsin.Whether you're a longtime fan of the comics or new to the world of Revival, this episode offers an insider's look at the making of one of SYFY's most anticipated series—where every resident, living or undead, has secrets to keep and stories to tel
The Superhero Show Show #589Revival Series PremiereThe Superhero Show Show: The Revival Series Premiere Brings the Dead Back to LifeThis week on The Superhero Show Show, the hosts dive deep into the eerie, emotional, and grounded Revival Series Premiere—Episode 101, “Don't Tell Dad.” Based on the acclaimed Image Comics series by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton, Revival sets its story in a small Wisconsin town where the dead mysteriously return to life. The panel breaks down the show's tone, complex family dynamics, and how this premiere redefines the supernatural mystery genre.Welcome to Wausau: When the Dead Walk (and Talk)From the opening moments, the hosts explain what sets the Revival Series Premiere apart from typical undead narratives. Rather than relying on gore or horror, “Don't Tell Dad” focuses on slow-building tension and personal stakes. The discussion highlights the show's restraint and how Revivers don't return as monsters—they come back nearly unchanged, creating an unsettling emotional ambiguity. They focus on Dana Cypress, the sheriff's deputy, and her younger sister Emme—who has secretly become one of the Revivers. Dana's investigation and discovery of Emme's return unfold with a quiet intensity. The hosts draw comparisons to Twin Peaks and Fargo, applauding the show's ability to blend murder, mystery, and small-town drama.Emotional Stakes and Subtle HorrorThe conversation turns to the episode's character-driven storytelling. One host praises the decision to avoid genre clichés and instead examine themes like grief, faith, and identity. Dana faces the growing pressure of protecting her sister while trying to solve an impossible mystery. Meanwhile, other Revivers begin appearing—and some are far less stable. The title, “Don't Tell Dad,” spurs speculation about hidden family secrets. What are the sisters concealing? Why does their father need to be kept in the dark? These questions elevate the emotional stakes and reinforce how Revival is more about relationships than jump scares. By the episode's end, the hosts agree that the show builds a believable world haunted by the impossible. Also This Week: Resident Alien Returns with “Prisoners”The second segment shifts to Resident Alien Season 4, Episode 1, “Prisoners.” The team is excited for the return of the galaxy's grumpiest doctor—though this time, he's locked up by government agents. Even behind bars, Harry's trademark deadpan humor is intact as he plots his next move. The hosts praise the show's continued balance of slapstick comedy and suspenseful sci-fi. They reflect on how Resident Alien keeps evolving while staying rooted in heartfelt character arcs. Asta's development gets particular attention, especially now that she's confronting major alien secrets alone.Speculation runs wild on what this season might hold. Will Earth finally face a true alien invasion? Can Harry stay hidden? Naturally, there's also a lighthearted debate over Alan Tudyk's comedic genius and whether he'd beat Paul Rudd in a charm contest.Final Thoughts on the Revival Series PremiereIn their wrap-up, the hosts return to Revival to emphasize its strong debut. The Revival Series Premiere successfully avoids horror clichés by anchoring its mystery in layered characters and rich emotional stakes. As anyone knows who's been around the comics industry for a while, sometimes the journey isn't always linear getting a creator owned project off the ground even when it's attached to one of the biggest names in the industry, and I'm personally excited to get to see this one come to full fruition as it's a good one so I've got New York Times Bestselling and Eisner-nominated comic book creator, David Marquez (Uncanny X-Men, Miles Morales) on with me today to talk about his four issue mini-series The UnChosen dropping onto shelves soon from Image Comics. I got a chance to get a sneak peek of The UnChosen and it's a stunning book, and this is one of those opportunities I relish to talk to one of the best artists in the comics game to pick their brain's artistically. We get into the nitty gritty of the artistic process, how the golden child trope plays a key role in the project, the transition from vertical scroll to standard comics formatting, sexy stuff like page economy, and so much more. Today's episode we'll be talking about the final season of Star Wars Andor series, why we love it, why chuds and conservatives hate Andor, and more importantly how Andor gives America the blueprint for revolution.
This week in Episode #695, I talk with Ethan Sacks, accomplished creator of comics including Star Wars, Old Man Hawkeye, and Midnight Suns, and his daughter and co-writer, Naomi Sacks, who are telling an allegory of a deeply personal time in their lives called A Haunted Girl. They have a Zoop.gg crowdfunding event going on until about Thursday, June 12. This book was originally published by Image Comics and Syzygy Publishing, and this hardcover edition contains all-new behind the scenes features and is the ultimate collector's item for fans of this acclaimed supernatural horror story. The book is described this way: “The fate of all life on Earth depends on a girl who doesn't know if she wants to live. Cleo, a 16-year-old adopted Japanese-American whose anxiety and depression drives her to suicidal thoughts, is fresh out of the hospital and trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life.” This campaign went live on the Zoop crowdfunding platform, Tuesday, May 6th. This date was chosen specifically to coincide with World Mental Health Awareness month, due to the book's subject matter. We explore how the series came to be, who the various characters are, and also talk about how these creatives worked together and what else they might have coming our way soon.
