As someone from the disability community, I'm often let down by how our community is portrayed in comics and it is rare to see our struggle reflected accurately. A month or two ago on social media that shall not be named, I saw screenwriter Peter Warren talking about his new comics project The Tin Can Society dropping right now from Image Comics on Rick Remender's Giant Generator Imprint, where he's using a sensitivity reader to help with the portrayal of the main protagonist tech mogul and superhero Johnny Moore. It has become common for writers to enlist a little help to make sure they are sensitive to the challenges of different marginalized groups, something I'm wholeheartedly in favor of, so I reached out to Peter and sensitivity reader Gianna Marie to hear more about this unique type of collaboration and what exactly it entails. I was quite impressed with the Tin Can Society when I picked it up. Issues one and two are out on shelves now so make sure to snag yourself a copy. From the publisher The first stunning issue of a brand-new miniseries from Giant Generator showcasing the first comics work by screenwriter and incredible talent PETER WARREN (The Incal feature film, Kill Me) with jaw-dropping art by FRANCESCO MOBILI (X-Men, SCUMBAG) and beautifully colored by CHRIS CHUCKRY (New X-Men, Gen 13). Johnny Moore is a world-famous tech mogul known as much for his work pioneering mobility aids for people with disabilities (like himself) as he is for moonlighting as the metal-suited vigilante, CALIBURN. But when Johnny is found murdered and his suit stolen, his estranged childhood best friends reunite to solve the mystery of his murder. THE TIN CAN SOCIETY is a heartfelt and human look at the evolution of friendships across a lifetime, at disability and ableism, and the destructive power of fame. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. Comics legend Marjorie Liu joins our host Lodro Rinzler to discuss an incredibly fun and disturbing issue of X-Men! Before we sell you on all the hilarity, let's get real for a moment: Marjorie Liu is not just an extraordinary comic writer, she's also just a lovely, grounded, kind human being. It was an honor to have her on the show. Okay, now on to the silliness. In this episode we discuss how Marjorie writes from the gut and, in her words, her gut is really weird. Also, how she went through a cathartic experience writing X-23 (now Wolverine). Topics include: teenage Marjorie wrote X-Men fanfic in the Marvel Universe, a hat and trenchcoat is more than sufficient to disguise a six foot, blue, furry man Charles Xavier sends postcards from space Mesmero is a bag of dicks Also Mesmero read a Playboy once and thinks that's how people should always pose the Phoenix force has limits on how badly you can mess up Jean Grey At the end we answer questions from YOU! Yes, you! Then Marjorie Liu spits wisdom on how to be yourself even and especially when others are trying to tell you who you should become and how to transmute hatred and negativity into gold. This episode is not to be missed! Marjorie Liu is an attorney and New York Times bestselling novelist and comic book writer. Her work at Marvel includes X-23, Black Widow, Han Solo, Dark Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men. She is also the co-creator of Monstress from Image Comics, which has won multiple Hugo Awards, British Fantasy Awards, the Harvey Award, and five Eisner Awards, making Liu the first-ever woman (and woman of color) to win an Eisner in the Best Writer category. She teaches comic book writing at MIT. Marjorie's extensive work with Marvel includes the Dark Wolverine series, NYX: No Way Home, X-23, and Black Widow: The Name of the Rose. She received national media attention for Astonishing X-Men, which featured the gay wedding of X-Man Northstar and was subsequently nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding media images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. You can find more of Marjorie over at her website. More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. Today's episode we have a The Penguin season finale spoiler discussion, and muse about Marvel Thunderbolts*, Captain America: Brave New World, & What If..? Season 3.
You are in for a treat today because I have writer Tananarive Due on the podcast with me to chat about her new Image Comics project Moon Dogs. She's new to comics but has an American Book Award, an NAACP Image Award, a World Fantasy Award, and two Stoker nominations under her belt already and this book is absolutely fantastic so if she sticks with it, I'm personally convinced there will be an Eisner to add to the trophy cabinet down the road. Moon Dogs is the third launch from The Horizon Experiment, a series of five one-shot comic books each featuring original protagonists from a marginalized background set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons. In this story we follow Nala, a young werewolf, and her family of East African shapeshifters in Miami. There's even a werehyena. Can you believe it? My favorite animal. That's not a big spoiler. It's a mixed family after all. Do yourself a favor and call your shop to snag yourself a copy because I'm convinced the numbers will merit at least a follow up limited series. Make sure to sign up for her mailing list. Additional creative team members Kelsey Ramsay - Art Jose Villarrubia - Colors Jeff Powell - Letters From Bloody Disgusting: Co-edited by Pichetshote and award-winning editor Will Dennis (Somna, Gideon Falls), The Horizon Experiment: Moon Dogs follows a Black family of lycanthropes of East African descent—who call themselves Moon Dogs—as older sister Nala, her parents, and her boyfriend try to protect her teen brother Kai as he gets caught in the middle of a burgeoning war between a savage pack of werewolves and the Miami police force. After a violent attack, Miami locals are starting to learn that werewolves are not just a myth, and Nala's family—who are minorities within a minority—find themselves drawn into a very dangerous situation. "less about, China versus America..what he really believes is the power of community". Award winning co-creator of The Good Asian, sak Pichetshote returns to talk about his visonary new project for Image Comics: a series of five one-shot comic books titled The Horizon Experiment. Each has a unique creative team inventing an original protagonist from a marginalized background set in genres such as horror or espionage, or inspired by icons like Indiana Jones or John Constantine. Pichetshote's entry in the series, The Manchurian, is more than a James Bond who "just so happens to be Chinese"- he is a spy whose identity is core to the narrative. There's also Finders/Keepers from Vita Ayala and Skyler Partridge in which a Boricua archaeologist returns an artifact from a museum to the people from whom it was stolen. The Manchurian, with artists Terry and Rachel Dodson is out now as is The Sacred Damned and more on the way from creative teams that bridge comics, literature, film and television. Here's my 2021 convo about The Good Asian with sak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgihttps://graphicpolicy.com/2021/05/18/the-good-asian-comic-with-creators-sak-pichetshote-and-alexandre-tefenkgi/

Actor, comic creator and frequent Talking Strange guest David Dastmalchian (Late Night with The Devil, Life of Chuck, and the Count Crowley comics) and comic book and collectible icon Todd McFarlane joins the show to discuss Knights vs. Samurai, the new Image Comics title created by Dastmalchian with the guidance of McFarlane (with art by Federico Mele). The adventure series features mythology, monsters, and a meet up of noble knights vs. honorable samurai in a "journey of magic, warfare, and a search for the truth." The title, available now, is only $2.99. More About Knights vs. Samurai Sir Charles Ward, "The Dragon Butcher," has achieved knighthood, acclaim, and is leading a legion of royal warriors on a noble mission, yet his self-doubt and grief haunt him. Venturing to a mysterious island in the Far East, Charles leads his diverse assembly of fighters (including a giant and two clerics) to seek vengeance against savage monsters who ambushed a group of English missionaries. Arrival on the island reveals that the truth may be drastically different from what Charles was led to believe, and the "savage monsters" he will face are actually a regiment of skillful warriors the likes of which he has never seen. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture podcast featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as learned experts in all things strange and unexplained.
