Recorded live at the Comics Without Borders / Sans Frontières gathering at Rice University, this episode dives deep into international comics publishing, aesthetic risk-taking, and how underground networks drive a truly global comics culture. David Schilter, publisher and editor of Latvia's acclaimed kuš! comics, joins us alongside Pedro Vieira de Moura, Portuguese critic, writer, and co-founder of the bookstore/gallery Mundo Fantasma. We talk about how a small-format anthology changed Latvian comics forever, why RAW magazine changed Pedro's life, and how comics have always been a place for outsiders to find their people. It's about pornographic comics, lipstick in mirrors, misnumbered anthologies, institutional resistance, aesthetic weirdness, bookstores as public educators, and why no one in Latvia is publishing Maus. In this special bonus episode of Geek Freaks, Frank is joined by acclaimed comic book writer Aubrey Sitterson to explore the radical, sci-fi world of Free Planet, his new series from Image Comics. Known for his bold storytelling and politically rich narratives, Aubrey takes us deep into the philosophical core of Free Planet, unpacking its themes of revolution, freedom, and the cost of building a better world. With deep dives into the creative process, the influence of history and anthropology, and the collaboration with artist Jed Dougherty, this episode is packed with insight and fire. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00 – Intro: Why this bonus episode matters 00:19 – Who is Aubrey Sitterson? Background and work 01:03 – The concept behind Free Planet 02:08 – Revolution, history, and political roots 04:30 – Defining real freedom and post-war challenges 07:53 – Layouts, spreads, and comic as object 09:46 – Balancing personal drama with large-scale politics 12:30 – Research-driven worldbuilding over aesthetics 18:06 – Interpersonal conflict as a reflection of ideology 22:34 – Creative process with Jed Dougherty 25:54 – Lettering innovations and character voice 28:01 – The unreliable narrator and historical context 34:11 – Print vs digital: Why Free Planet demands paper 43:01 – Final reflections and what's next Key Takeaways: Aubrey Sitterson uses Free Planet to challenge conventional ideas of freedom and revolution. The comic is deeply researched, pulling from real-world political and cultural movements. Free Planet is built as a print-first experience, with double-page spreads, maps, and dense visual storytelling. The creative team—Jed Dougherty, Taylor Esposito, and Vittorio Astone—elevate the book's layered vision. The book includes in-world historical commentary that questions neutrality and narrative control. Sitterson aims to create work that demands attention and resists passive reading. Quotes: “The only freedom worth having is the freedom you fight for.” – Aubrey Sitterson “We made Free Planet for people who want to sit with something and really think.” – Aubrey “Talon's fan reaction was so strong, I had to restructure the story just to give him more space.” – Aubrey “There's a difference between mimicking aesthetics and actually building something from the same roots.” – Aubrey Call to Action: Love these kinds of deep-dive interviews? It's a fairy tale ending to this season of the CDB Pod as well to the year when Brian, Darci, and Richard talk about Brian's choice this week: The Daughters of Ys by M.T. Anderson and Jo Rioux (First Second). The Crew get lost in talks about sea monsters, lousy Kings, and magic curses. They also discuss the recent breaking news of Dark Horse Comics being purchased by The Embracer Group. For DIY Corner, more love is given to Shing Yin Khor as Darci talks about their new game available via their Patreon and Brian talks about a Brit Pop influenced comic on Kickstarter. Last: Everyone, including Carrie who unfortunately could not record this week, chose their favorite book of the season and/or their favorite book they read in the last 10 weeks. Who chose what? Listen to find out! Other books talked about this episode: She Could Fly vol. 3: Fight or Flight by Christopher Cantwell, Martin Morazzo, Clem Robins, and Miroslav Mrva; Crow Time by Isa (Webtoon); and Chicken Devil #2 by Brian Buccelato, Hayden Sherman and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (AfterShock) Crow Time: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/crow-time/list?title_no=693372 DIY Corner: Shing Yin Khor's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/shing Geezer: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/offregisterpress/geezer?ref=section-comics-illustration-view-more-discovery-p1 Comics Deserve Better is a weekly podcast hosted by Brian, Carrie and Darci which covers the world of Independent Comics. Hi All! We have reached our penultimate episode of the current season of the CDB Pod. Unfortunately, Darci was unable to join us for this recording, but Carrie and Brian pressed on and talked about Carrie's choice: Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? by Harold Schechter and Eric Powell (Albatross Funnybooks). Carrie and Brian get into the nitty gritty of this True-Crime account of one of the most infamous murderers in history. It get's a little gross, here and there, but just like the book, Brian and Carrie try to keep it classy and not too disgusting while talking about this disgusting topic. Other books discussed this episode: Barn Owl by Sas Milledge (ShortBox) and Immortals Fenyx Rising: From Great Beginnings by Ben Khan, Georgeo Brooks, and Wes Dzioba (Dark Horse). The CDB Crew is back this week to talk about a story that a dead bunny once told to a butterfly. Yes, Darci's choice this week is Pretty Deadly vol. 1 from Image Comics. Listen and get lost in the dream like story telling with our hosts. Also stick around for conspiracy theories, gumroad finds and "taco commercial" decisions. The crew also address the sad news regarding George Perez and Kickstarter's move to a Block-Chain. Other books discussed this issue: Impossible Jones #1 by Karl Kesel, David Hahn, Tony Aviña, and Comicraft (Scout); Regarding the Matter of Oswald's Body #1 by Christopher Cantwell, Luca Casalanguida, Giada Marchisio, and AndWorld Design (BOOM); Girls Don't Like Dinosaurs by Natasha Alterici (Gumroad). https://alterici.gumroad.com/l/qprqw?recommended_by=library DIY Corner: Of Thunder and Lightning by Kimberly Wang: https://kmbrlei.gumroad.com/l/SEuMe A Frog in the Fall (and later on) by Linnea Sterte: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/peow/a-frog-in-the-fall-by-linnea-sterte-from-peow Comics Deserve Better is a weekly podcast hosted by Brian, Carrie and Darci which covers the world of Independent Comics. After a very quick hiatus, the CDB Crew is back with a new episode! Brian has chosen for us this week, Rock Candy Mountain by Kyle Starks and Chris Schweizer and published by Image Comics. We also get into conversations about other related topics like riding the rails, strong opinions of John Steinbeck, and how to summon the devil. It is a fun time to be had by all! Other books talked about this episode: We Don't Kill Spiders #1-2 by Joseph Schmalke and DC Hopkins (Scout/Black Caravan); Maniac of New York vol 1 and 2 by Elliott Kalan, Andrea Mutti, and Taylor Esposito (Aftershock); and How to Make Tostones by Vanessa Flores (https://twitter.com/vanieflores/status/1460695388290179080?t=pjkbia5hoqufpI-3J_iZ0w&s=19) Here's a link to Harry McClintock singing Big Rock Candy Mountain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhVCH0UO9cg DIY Corner: Kyle Starks' Monthly Sticker Club: https://www.kylestarks.com/merch/p/sticker-club Comics Deserve Better is a weekly podcast hosted by Brian, Carrie and Darci which covers the world of Independent Comics. Greetings from the CDB Crew (on The Satellite of Love)! This week, Carrie chose for all of us to read Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Comic by (deep breath) Joel Hodgson, Harold Buchholz, Matt McGinnis, Seth Robinson, Sharyl Volpe, Mary Robinson, Todd Nuack, Wes Dzioba, Mike Manley, Jack Pollock, Mimi Simon, and Michael Heisler, published by Dark Horse comics. Though everyone on the panel might not have fully enjoyed this adaptation, they all definitely agreed on how awesome the Crow-Keeper was and how he needs to be in more things very soon. This was a very interesting episode audibly, as well. Brian and Carrie's dog was in a very needy mood and you can here him whining in the background, here and there, throughout the recording. Also, stick around after the credits for old timey phone and fire alarm shenanigans! DIY Corner this week is a new comic by Jeremy Holt on Tapas and tribute to British Girls comics from the 1960s. Other comics discussed on this issue: What's the Furthest Place from Here? by Matthew Rosenberg, Tyler Boss, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Image); Chicken Devil #1 by Brian Buccellato, Hayden Sherman and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Aftershock); Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur (WebToon); and Puu (பூ ) by Nabi (Tapas). Darci, Richard and Greg discuss everything from comfort food, cooking, family, not accidentally poisoning said family with your cooking, and of course, comics. Beforehand, Brian, Carrie, Darci and Richard discuss the recent news of the unionization of workers at Image Comics. The other portion of DIY Corner, aside from talking to Greg, is a cute book about a witch and a mice village. Other books discussed this episode: A Thing Called Truth #1 by Iolanda Zanfardino and Elisa Romboli (Image); Atnomen by ilustrAriane (Webtoon); and The Winchester Mystery House #1 by Joshua Werner, Dustin Irvin and Justin Birch (Source Point Press).
