Welcome to Episode 2 of Batman Books are Burning in Hell, in which regular hosts Tucker Stone and Matt Seneca are joined by Benjamin Marra for a discussion of Batman: Venom! If Marra needs an introduction you're living wrong - the cartoonist behind Night Business, Terror Assaulter O.M.W.O.T., American Blood and What We Mean By Yesterday is one of the most accomplished artists currently making comics, full stop. Marra's works are vital entries in the category of American pulp, embracing his medium's history of disrepute while avoiding nostalgia with their purity of execution and commitment to extremity. Venom, published in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #16-20 (1991), is Denny O'Neil, Trevor Von Eeden, Russ Braun, and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez's epic saga of a Batman whose commitment to workout gains ends in tragedy, madness, and punching a great white shark in the face. LISTEN UP!

JAWS! Into the Multiverse is a gonzo comic book project filled to the brim with indie and underground comics talent. A few of the contributors to this Jaws parody anthology have appeared on Wits' End Podcast already--Geoffrey Krawczyk, Harry Nordlinger, Nick Cagnetti, Benjamin Marra & a few others. There are creators like David Moses, Karmichael Jones, Mike Diana, Jasper Jubenvill (and a number of others) who bring their unique talents to the book, too. So what is JAWS! Through the Multiverse? Here is the blurb for the Kickstarter: "We know the events that took place on Earth-414 on Amity Island, when Jaws was viciously destroyed by those three hooligans. But what about the countless other versions of Jaws that exist across the multiverse? Such as when he's a Barbarian, or a Luchador, or a crime boss, or a giant mechanical sea monster. This anthology explores some of those many adventures." During the conversation, Wits’ End host Shah Emami talks to Paul Jurczak, indie creator and organizer behind the cinematic shark’s insane, multiversal outing. Benjamin Marra brings doses of 80s nostalgia and blood-soaked subversiveness through his comics. His books like Night Business, American Blood, Terror Assaulter, Jesusfreak all showcase Marra’s boundary breaking talents as a cartoonist. Despite consuming comics, movies and art, it wasn’t until he had a run-in with Darick Robertson’s creator-owned book Space Beaver that pushed him to start making comics professionally. And now, he’s known as a heavyweight creator of “outlaw comics”. Wits’ End host Shah Emami and Marra talk about Marra’s time studying at School of Visual Arts under David Mazzucchelli, overcoming fear of judgement, finishing your projects, his outlaw persona, post-pandemic life, protests, their love of Jack Kirby & more. We start this Easter Edition of Books & Brews at Werewolf for brunch. We get our fill of grub and later drink some ciders from Serpentine a local cidery. Turns out Alan actually enjoys somethings but he does hate pandas. We discuss Battle Pope by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore. Robert thought Alan was teaching his kids about Jesus when in fact Alan was discussing the almighty Optimus Prime. Find out what makes Alan sad. Second, we talk about Jesusfreak by Joe Casey and Benjamin Marra. There is a big split decision on this reading. Baby Jesus breaks Robert and Alan. We discuss our own religious backgrounds/beliefs and Alan talks about his blessed hands. We discuss our final reading which is Punk Rock Jesus by Sean Murphy.

Nuff said!
