Some clerks in Dodge County aren't using absentee ballot drop boxes this November after a Republican sheriff urged them not to. Two Wisconsin LGBTQ+ advocacy groups filed a federal complaint against the Kettle Moraine School District. Athletes with Wisconsin connections helped get Team USA to the medal podium at the Paralympics in Paris. And, many Wisconsin voters are frustrated by what they call incivility in politics. A ban on teachers displaying Pride materials in classrooms or writing their pronouns in email signatures will remain in place in a Wisconsin public school district following a contentious board meeting during which parents and students criticized the policy.The prohibition is based on Kettle Moraine School District's decade-old policy that bans "partisan politics, sectarian religious views, or selfish propaganda." Today the team is talking with Patricia DeKlotz. Dr. DeKlotz has been Superintendent in the Kettle Moraine School District since 2006. And for the last 10 years, she has been recognized as a national leader in personalized and competency-based learning for students and teachers. In 2016, Dr. DeKlotz was named Wisconsin Superintendent of the Year. Chances are good your local school district has gone directly to voters asking for more money to stay afloat. Tight state funding and restrictions on local taxing power have pushed more than 70% of Wisconsin school districts to seek operating referendums. These referendums aren’t about borrowing money for new buildings. They’re requests for more property taxes to sustain basic costs. In recent elections, most referendums were approved . But what happens to the unlucky districts where voters say no? Delafield resident Sherrie Flemming sent our Beats Me series a question about the impact of failed operating referendums.
