How do metrics and quantification shape social science? In The Quantified Scholar: How Research Evaluations Transformed the British Social Sciences (Columbia UP, 2022), Juan Pablo Pardo-Guerra, an Associate Professor in sociology at the University of California, San Diego, explores this question using a case study of British academia. The book combines a rich array of quantitative and qualitative analysis, demonstrating the transformation of working conditions, institutional contexts, and research areas since the introduction of a metrics and quantification regime during the 1980s. Highlighting the complexity and ambivalences of metrics and quantification, as well as the uneven distribution of positive and negative impacts, the book offers essential reading for every academic, irrespective of the nation or institution in which they work. It also will be important for those seeing to better understand the role of metrics and markets in contemporary life. When it comes to lead conversion, are you mastering the basics? From my last podcast episode, you know how to make it so people can find you. Now, we will focus on how to convert them into paying customers. Questions to ask yourself, are you collecting their phone number so you can call them back? Or are you collecting their email to enter into an email sequence that automatically nurtures them? Do you have a staff member whose primary job is to nurture those leads and build that relationship? I can tell you with confidence that is the MOST IMPORTANT role in your business. This is the reason why I hired this role first, before anyone else. Building relationships takes time. In this episode, I also focus on the amount of contact and touchpoints it takes to build a relationship and convert a call into a future appointment. Sales is an uncomfortable part of business for most people but I say stop feeling uncomfortable with the word “selling” and instead learn to embrace it because, whether you like it or not, we are selling everyday! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Evaluations project @ ARC is hiring a researcher and a webdev/engineer, published by Beth Barnes on September 9, 2022 on The AI Alignment Forum. The evaluations project at the Alignment Research Center is looking to hire a generalist technical researcher and a webdev-focused engineer. We're a new team at ARC building capability evaluations (and in the future, alignment evaluations) for advanced ML models. The goals of the project are to improve our understanding of what alignment danger is going to look like, understand how far away we are from dangerous AI, and create metrics that labs can make commitments around (e.g. 'If you hit capability threshold X, don't train a larger model until you've hit alignment threshold Y'). We're also still hiring for model interaction contractors, and we may be taking SERI MATS fellows. About the project Big picture Once AI systems are close to being capable enough to be an x-risk, there should be procedures that labs follow to ensure they don't build or deploy existentially dangerous models. We should have thought through the plausible paths to models gaining power, and ensured that models are not capable of these. There should be commitments that if model capabilities reach a certain level, labs will not scale up or deploy models until they have reached a certain level of alignment. In order to make this happen, we need good ways to measure both dangerous capabilities and alignment. We can start preparing for this now by: evaluating capabilities of current models predicting how dangerous the next generation of models is likely to be assessing the quality of our prediction methods by using them to predict the properties of generation n+1 given generation n, for historical generation models working with labs to evaluate their models before they are deployed, as a warm-up to stronger commitments in the future designing evaluations for alignment, deception etc to be run on future models Doing this now has some additional benefits: Evaluating capabilities of current models is helpful for predicting timelines, by giving us a more precise sense of what needs to change for models to be dangerous Specifying what we'd actually measure to determine the alignment of some model is helpful for clarifying our thoughts about how we expect misalignment to emerge, and what exactly the alignment problem is This work may produce demonstrations of models doing competent and scary behavior. This can be useful if we think people are underestimating the capabilities of current or near-future models and making bad decisions because of that. Current goals Our current goals are to work with cutting-edge models, produce evaluations for how far they are from x-risk capabilities, and share these evaluations with labs. More specifically, we're doing things like: design and build scaffolding that lets generative language models act like agents over long time horizons: scripts to automatically run model outputs in the shell or forward them as subtasks to other copies of the model sampling multiple actions, having the model evaluate them and pick the best one various ways of prompting and nudging the model that improve performance think about what a model would need to be able to do in order to successfully gain power, given current levels of caution and monitoring around AI systems. For instance: exfiltrate its weights via hacking or social engineering; make money via crime or labor; use this money to buy server time and start more copies of itself running on those servers Assess model performance on these subtasks, and determine whether the model is capable of some set of tasks that's sufficient for successful powerseeking, or if not, what exactly the barriers are and how close the model is to surmounting them At the end of this, we hope to either have found clea...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Value of Life: VSL Estimates vs Community Perspective Evaluations, published by Joel Tan on September 6, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary The value of life, which we need to know if we are to correctly prioritize between interventions, is poorly captured by value of statistical life (VSL) estimates, and instead is better captured by community perspective evaluations. Value of Statistical Life Estimates VSL estimates may involve stated preferences of survey respondents (i.e. from asking them their willingness to pay to avert some risk) or revealed preference (e.g. looking at how much people are willing to pay for airbags in cars, or at how much they need to be compensated to work in a riskier job). Regardless, the general idea behind the VSL approach is that we have the following implicit equation: Compensation needed = Probability of death Badness of death Hence, if we elicit the compensation needed, we can then just divide by the probability of death to get the badness of death. There are numerous flaws in this approach, however: Problems leading to the misestimation of the compensation needed Humans are not hyperrational, and it's not as if survey respondents, or people taking up risky jobs, will bother to literally think about how much they subjectively value their own life in monetary terms, and then use the additional probability of death to calculate the amount of compensation needed to get them to undertake a risky course of action. Whatever number they throw out in response to surveys, or whatever risk premium they implicitly accept in taking up jobs, therefore, will just not be a good guide to the actual compensation needed, and cannot be used to estimate the badness of death. People exhibit insensitivity with respect to changes in small risks, reporting same or similar compensation amounts for risks that differ even in magnitudes. Hence, even if people were calculating the sums needed to compensate them for a risk, they may not be doing so accurately. Estimates may be made under duress (e.g. workers may fear quitting a risky job due to a lack of alternatives). The upshot of this is that the true equation people are implicitly solving is "Value from avoiding unemployment >= Probability of death Badness of death", in which case the actual risk premium does not necessarily equal the compensation needed, since even if the former were below the latter people would still choose the risk so long as the value of avoiding unemployment were sufficiently high. This potentially leads to the systematic understatement of the compensation needed and hence the badness of death, if the value from avoiding unemployment > compensation needed > actual risk premium. People may substitute in the judgement of others when estimating the compensation needed, rather than using their own, true subjective monetary value of life (e.g. workers leaving it up to their boss to decide what risks are reasonable, even if the bosses do not value their lives as much as they themselves would). Estimates may be confounded by moral considerations (e.g. workers like firefighters may take up jobs not because they are appropriately compensated for it from a purely self-interested perspective, but because it benefits others sufficiently that they see it as worth doing, the risk to themselves notwithstanding). And so, parallel to the duress case, the true equation people are implicitly solving is "Social benefits >= Probability of death Badness of death", and there is systematic understatement of the compensation needed and hence the badness of death, if the social benefits > compensation needed > actual risk premium. Estimates may be confounded by social considerations (e.g. workers valuing the social conditions in which the risk occurs, with them finding risks more acceptable when the...

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Steven Roche, a PhD epidemiologist and owner of ACER Consulting Group located in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) contracts with ACER Consulting Group to assist with data evaluation, training and development of the standards for the Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) program. We discuss the development process of the FARM program and how veterinarians and dairy producers are involved in all steps of this process. Reviewing data from previous evaluations is utilized as the volunteers work to develop program updates to be considered by the NMPF Board of Directors. Roche describes the different corrective actions which are Mandatory Corrective Action Plans (MCAP) requiring nine months to resolve and Continuous Improvement Plans (CIP) which require three years to resolve. We discuss the top 5 MCAP's and CIP's from the FARM 4.0 evaluations collected to date. So far, approximately 13,000 2nd party and 168 3rd party evaluations have been performed. Roche is involved with analyzing the data from the evaluations as well as compare the results from the 2nd and 3rd party evaluators. Roche points out that several of the common corrective actions require veterinary involvement such as protocol development, having an annually signed VCPR, continuing education training for family and non-family labor, and protocols for disbudding and pain management. We discuss data collected on broken tails, body condition scores, locomotion scoring, and pain management protocols for disbudding. Roche encourages veterinarians to consult with their dairy farm clients to help them prepare for their evaluations to ensure they are in compliance with all standards. This is a great opportunity for veterinarians to offer a service to their clients that requires veterinarian involvement.  If you are attending the conference in Long Beach, Calif., we encourage you to sign up for Seminar 11, Veterinary Role in Helping Farms to Meet and Excel in Welfare Audits, which will be held Wednesday, September 21 from 8 am to 5 pm. Towards the end of the season, it's a good idea to take a look at the equipment and other management tricks you've been using all summer while it's still fresh in your mind. Today, Jim and Kim talk about how well the veils they use worked this summer, and the bee suits they occasionally wear (did you know a good way to wash a smokey, propolis covered bee suit is to use a pressure sprayer?) and is that old smoker good for another year, or not? There's a lot to consider… How's your location working out? What about neighbors? Have they complained about your bees? Swimming pools got used a lot this year, and were your bees in the way? Have you experienced animal pests? Mice, bear, racoons, skunks… are any or all of them giving your bees a problem? Will moving somewhere else help solve that? Now's the time to think about all this while it's still fresh in your mind. We hope you enjoyed today's episode. Please follow or subscribe today and leave a comment. Matching the correct puppy with the right owner is essential for a healthy and happy dog in the long term, which is a difficult task for breeders. How do breeders ensure the best match? This is where the BAB program comes in. Designed by Jeanette Forrey, a pioneer of the program and respected figure amongst dog breeders, it aims to educate and help breeders to find the best matches while ensuring that the puppy's needs are met. In today's show, we talk about evaluations and protocols designed by Jeanette that will help breeders get the full potential out of both puppy and owner.
