Genesis 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. 14:19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. 14:21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. 14:22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, 14:23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: 14:24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
After Abraham came back from victory and retrieved his nephew Lot, the king of Sodom came to greet him, but then so did Melchizedek. Melchizedek, a reflection of Jesus, gave Abraham communion and a blessing. Abraham in return gave Melchizedek a tithe of all he had. The king of Sodom on the other hand, made demands on Abraham and would allow him to keep the goods that he took as booty. This is the difference between God's way and man's way. God gives while man takes. Both offer a way or a means of salvation, but only one is able to give salvation unto life.
This week, Pastor Otte tells us how Abram rescues Lot from pillaging armies and is then tempted by the King of Sodom. Genesis 14:1-21

In this teaching from Genesis 14:17-24 Abram is returning from battle and meets two kings. Abram says no to one and yes to the other.
Genesis 14 records the story of Abram rescuing his nephew Lot after being taken captive by invading forces. As Abram brings Lot home along with all the others who were taken captive as well as the possessions take, he is met by the King of Sodom who wishes to reward him. Abram's response has a few teachable moments in it! When we look close enough at how Abram replied we learn how to too can make decisions that will please God.

Pastor Daniel Bracken continues in his sermon series, Daring Faith, with a message out of Genesis 14:17-15:1 entitled, "The king of Sodom or The king of Salem".
Lot has been taken. Abraham makes a daring rescue. Victory belongs to God. What do we see? I. The Silence of Yahweh's Providence, vv1-12. II. The Skill of Yahweh's Servant, vv13-16. III. The Celebration of Yahweh's Victory, vv17-24.
Genesis 14:11-17 11) So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. 12) They also took Lot, the son of Abram's brother, who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way. 13) Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram. 14) When Abram heard that his kinsman had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15) And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16) Then he brought back all the possessions, and also brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people. 17) After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). Genesis 14:21-24 21) And the king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself." 22) But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have lifted my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23) that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich.' 24) I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share."
