We're still surprised people did this but... 50+ founders worth $10M to $4B reveal their personal finances. Here it is: https://joinhampton.com/mw-wrWhy do we do this? Because if you're an aspirational person or someone who runs a business and is making money, it's incredibly challenging to figure out what to do. Information is impossible to find — and that's what we put together: the net worth reveal and why we do this podcast, Moneywise. He got his first $5M check and expected to feel superhuman. The next day was one of the most disappointing of his life.Jesse Pujji walked away from a Goldman Sachs job where he made $500K at 25 — with a boss making $3M and a group head making $20M — to bootstrap an ad agency on $33K per partner and a stack of Amex cards. Ampush cracked the Facebook arbitrage before almost anyone: $100K in monthly revenue in June 2010 became $2M a month with $600K in EBITDA fourteen months later. He scaled it to half a billion in annual ad spend and 250 employees without raising a dollar, turned down $25M at 27, sold 20% to Red Ventures in 2015, and sold the whole thing to New Mountain Capital in 2022 for somewhere between $40M and $60M on a 35% stake. He never got the nine-figure number he made up in his head, and he says chasing it was the mistake. This episode gets into the exact allocation of a post-exit portfolio, why Jesse refuses to let his advisors put illiquid startup equity on his balance sheet, what $500K a year of "normal" spending actually buys, and why he asked his financial advisor how people possibly spend more than that. He's honest about the gap between the money he expected to change him and the money that didn't. And we spend real time on the part most founders avoid: three kids who never saw him grind, a Greenlight allowance split into thirds, a $63 JCPenney paycheck at 16 that taught him more than any of it, and the question of whether to leave them anything at all. Also, this podcast is made by Hampton, which is a community for founders doing on average $20 million a year in revenue. We saw a lot of these money conversations happening privately behind closed doors and we thought, "What the heck, let's make it public." If you are a founder, apply here: http://joinhampton.com/mwTimestamps:00:00 — Jesse's origin story: immigrant household in St. Louis, a snow shoveling business in middle school, and $33K each plus Amex cards to start Ampush02:00 — The Facebook arbitrage that changed everything: $100K/month in June 2010 to $2M in revenue and $600K in EBITDA fourteen months later02:49 — "Sandbox entrepreneurship" — Facebook cold-calls them: "Who the hell are you guys? You're one of our top 100 advertisers"04:24 — Why he left Goldman at 25 making $500K: "I would rather make half of my future expected earnings and do something I feel excited about"06:18 — The $25M offer two years in, why they said no, and the $3M dividend they took instead — $1M each, which bought his SF house07:30 — The made-up number that wrecked them: hoping for $150M, getting $60–75M offers, and turning down $190M in Marin stock09:24 — The Red Ventures deal and $5M after tax: "I thought I would get wings or superhuman strength... nothing changed"11:16 — 2022: selling to New Mountain and walking away without going with the deal13:12 — The exit number, on the record: a $40–60M range on a stake "a little bit more than a third"16:04 — The Zone of Genius framework, and why being a CEO sat in his zone of excellence — good at it, drained by it17:52 — Gateway X by the numbers19:06 — Whether the scarcity ever goes away: "nine days out of ten" became "one day out of ten," and the coach question he couldn't answer20:16 — The Deer Valley condo, and finally understanding why people buy vacation homes21:08 — Full portfolio breakdown and why he tells his advisors to mark his startup equity at zero23:24 — Annual spend 26:52 — The schedule that makes it work: Tuesdays and Thursdays he misses bedtime, Monday/Wednesday/Friday he doesn't, and he deletes Slack on vacation28:16 — The thing that keeps him up: "They've gotten all the fruits of the grind without actually observing the grind"29:23 — Greenlight, allowance equal to their age, and splitting it into thirds — spend, save, give30:19 — Running a Starbucks P&L with his 9-year-old daughter in the store32:30 — The four-bucket framework: spend it, give it to the government, give it to charity, or give it to your kids34:44 — A Schnucks family board member on generational wealth: "Money doesn't ruin kids. Adam Aizer plays devil's advocate as he challenges Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard's top sleepers, breakouts, and busts for 2026. We kick things off with Patrick Mahomes as a sleeper (9:03), debating whether his current ADP creates value while weighing his injury concerns and the state of Kansas City's wide receiver room. News and notes includes a Cam Skattebo backflip (19:09). Next, it's bust season as the crew debates whether De'Von Achane (24:10) can overcome Miami's offensive concerns and if Davante Adams (32:52) can keep finding the end zone as his age increases. Adam also questions the week-to-week consistency of Zay Flowers (41:04), forcing Jamey to make his case for the Ravens top receiver. We wrap things up with running backs Omarion Hampton (46:15) & Kenneth Gainwell (58:48), discussing Mike McDaniel's influence as Hampton's new offensive coordinator and whether Bucky Irving will limit Gainwell's fantasy upside in Tampa.Fantasy Football Today is available for free on the Audacy app as well as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and wherever else you listen to podcastsWatch FFT on YouTube SUBSCRIBE to FFT Dynasty on AppleFOLLOW FFT Dynasty on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2aHlmMJw1m8FareKybdNfG?si=8487e2f9611b4438&nd=1

Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond Episode 295 – From Charleston to Hampton: Groundings, Close Calls, and Coastal Gems Every cruising sailor has those passages that test both skill and resolve. This is one of them. In Episode 295, we depart historic Charleston and head north toward Hampton, Virginia, navigating the ever-changing waters of the U.S. East Coast. Along the way, we recount several unexpected groundings that serve as reminders that even experienced sailors can be humbled by shifting shoals and narrow channels. But it isn’t all adversity. We visit some of the most charming ports on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, including beautiful Beaufort, North Carolina, where Southern hospitality, waterfront scenery, and maritime history make it one of our favorite stops. Charleston, too, remains one of America’s great sailing destinations, rich in history, architecture, and unforgettable harbor views. Then comes the moment every cruiser dreads. Far from help, the engine suddenly dies. With little room for error and danger closing in, quick thinking and a bit of good fortune help us narrowly avoid what could have become a very serious situation. It’s a vivid reminder that on the water, things can change in an instant—and preparation, experience, and calm decision-making matter. Whether you’re planning your own voyage, dreaming about casting off the dock lines, or simply enjoy great sea stories, this episode is packed with practical lessons, memorable destinations, and the unpredictable adventure that makes cruising under sail so rewarding. What would it take to raise a generation that's grateful — not just grievance-driven — about America? In this episode of Refining Rhetoric, host Robert Bortins sits down with presidential historian, award-winning screenwriter, and author Jane Hampton Cook to explore America's 250th anniversary, the faith of the Founding Fathers, and why reclaiming gratitude is essential to preserving the republic. Jane shares untold stories from the American Revolution — including a Quaker woman who helped save Washington's army, the forgotten black heroes of Bunker Hill, and why George Washington referenced Providence over 560 times in his writings. She also unpacks how the Declaration of Independence planted seeds of liberty that took generations to harvest, and why classical Christian education is uniquely equipped to pass these truths on to the next generation. Whether you're a homeschool parent trying to instill love of country, a classical educator looking for a fresh angle on American history, or simply someone who wants to feel more grateful and less cynical — this conversation will leave you inspired, informed, and a little more proud to be an American.   Jane Hampton Cook's Website: https://janecook.com/

Jane connects these historical events to the founders' belief that God was active in the birth of the nation.TS and Jane also discuss the importance of teaching children American history through stories, virtue, and love of country. Jane, a former White House staffer, served during the administration of former President George W. Bush. In addition, she is an accomplished author, speaker, and historian. Jane highlights the incredible life of George Washington - his career, his leadership, and his faith in “Providence.” Jane says that Washington referred to the hand of Providence - or God's hand in his life - 568 times in his writings alone. “For Washington, leadership wasn't about glory; it was about justice,” declares Jane. She also recounts the spiritual history of young America and the important role gratitude plays in national greatness. He kept 100% equity through the first three, gave 25% of the last one to his employees, and personally walked away with hundreds of millions across the run. Episode 585: Glynn Pretty - The South Australian jockey described by Bart Cummings in the 1960's as the best horseman to ride for his stable.

John Tapp Racing

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2026 46:30

When an Adelaide podcast listener contacted me recently about a potential interview with Glynn Pretty, I couldn't get things under way quickly enough. In the 60's and 70's this man's reputation was as solid as any top jockey in the nation. He spent a lot of time out of Australia fulfilling contracts in Singapore and Hong Kong, but whenever back in Adelaide he promptly reminded owners and trainers why people like Bart Cummings were so lavish in their praise. A dreadful fall in Hong Kong in 1978 was expected to terminate his career. Six years later he made a comeback and rode 50 winners in a year before quitting for good.  Glynn put a lot back into racing following his official retirement, and at age 80 is still involved with the SA Racing Appeals Board. He's also enjoyed the thrill of horse ownership, especially an involvement with talented mare See You In Heaven. The daughter of Divine Prophet won six races for her ownership team, all at stakes level. We begin by talking about Glynn‘s love of the game of golf.  The former star jockey looks back on 15 years as President of the South Australian Jockey's Association. Glynn's very proud of the part he played in the establishment of the SA Jockeys Academy in conjunction with TAFE. He explains how it works and acknowledges some of the great riding talents to come under his tutelage. He looks back on his inclusion in a team appointed by Stereline in the 90's to visit the USA on a promotional tour. The goal was to showcase the starting gates and running rails manufactured by the company in Australia. While in America Glynn saw jockey's safety vests for the first time. He quickly floated the idea in Australia. He talks of his collaboration with the Australian Jockeys Association in introducing a better form of indemnity insurance for injured jockeys. Glynn talks of childhood days in Adelaide and his battle with asthma. He was actually allergic to horses. He talks of his original apprenticeship organised by his father Stan. Things went terribly wrong soon after he started at the Morphettville stables of Bob Burrows. Glynn says he left racing altogether for more than a year but later regenerated an apprenticeship with trainer Bert Kenny. The legendary Colin Hayes came into the equation at one stage. Pretty remembers his first ever race ride at Strathalbyn and the magic of his first win at Cheltenham. There was enormous sentiment attached to this win. He recalls the traumatic circumstances under which his father lost his life in a motor accident. We simply let Glynn reminisce about some of the better horses he got to ride early in his career. Galilee and Light Fingers make for a good start. Dayana also gets an honourable mention. He speaks fondly of Hampton's Pride, one of the most expensive yearlings sold in Australia in the 1960's. Glynn speaks of wins in the famous Adelaide double the Goodwood Hcp and Adelaide Cup. His wins came one year apart. He looks back on wins in races like the SA St Leger, Port Adelaide Cup and SA Oaks. Glynn  remembers his flying start the first time he took on a retainer in Singapore. He rode for just 9 months of the season but finished second in the premiership. He looks back on 4 consecutive years as Singapore's champion jockey. Glynn was stunned when awarded a rare honour after so little time in Singapore. He talks of wins in some of the jurisdiction's most important races. He says SA premierships were never on his radar because of the time he spent out of the country. He was however proud of a South Australian premiership after returning from Singapore  in the 1970/71 season. He talks of three amazing retainers he was forced to decline during his career. One of them came from the UK. Glynn  talks of the success he enjoyed in HK and his injury toll after the fateful 1978 accident at Happy Valley. He looks back on two other interesting feature wins in the early 70's- one in Queensland the other in Melbourne. Both winners were trained by Bart Cummings. Glynn never won a Melbourne Cup but says it could have been different had he been in the right place at the right time. He remembers a Singapore marriage to his late wife Gladys and the whereabouts of daughter Jodie and son Troy.  Glynn Pretty's reputation as one of the best jockeys of his generation was set in stone. Just ask any racing man who was around in the 60's and 70's. Great to have him on the podcast. Old timers will enjoy his recollections. Younger racing fans will be impressed by the merit of his achievements.

She sold for $88M, almost bought a lake house she didn't want, and spent $340K on Knicks playoff tickets — then gave two away because it felt better. Also, this podcast is made by Hampton, which is a community for founders doing on average $20 million a year in revenue. We saw a lot of these money conversations happening privately behind closed doors and we thought, "Why not, let's make it public." If you are a founder, apply here: https://joinhampton.com/mwAnne Mahlum built Solid Core from $175,000 of her own savings into an $88M exit. Two years later, her net worth is $115–120M, with $65M in public equities and $15M in a single stock alone. But the numbers are the least interesting thing that's happened since. After the sale, she secretly launched a second fitness company, had panic attacks she's never talked publicly about, shut the whole thing down, and spent two years in legal fallout. Then she had a baby, pulled an accepted lake house offer the morning after making it, and started forcing herself to spend $200K a month just to stop the money from piling up.This episode covers the full portfolio breakdown two years post-exit, why she's done with private investments, the Ambition story she's never told, what a baby did to how she thinks about money and time, and what she actually wants to be remembered for — which has nothing to do with net worth.Sponsors: Daily Body Coach - achieve your dream body with https://moneywise.dailybodycoach.com

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Wayne Hall, Ken Fuller and Jeffrey Crecelius This week we welcomed bass maestro Miguel Falcão back onto the YMP, this time to talk about the bass that appears in Barry Plummer's photo set from Redan Recorders in February 1980. Chris shows off his new instrument to the camera so we have a great insight into his feelings, shortly after he received his customised Electra MPC bass. He seems rather pleased with it, as you can see in the photos I have included, appropriately watermarked, in the show notes for this week.I kick off the conversation by explaining what Yes were doing in Redan Recorders and why Barry Plummer's visit was fortuitous, at least for those of us interested in the history of the world's greatest progressive rock band.Miguel then takes us through all the details of the Electra bass, delving deeply into the weeds in the way we enjoy very much on the YMP. What was special about this bass guitar? Where and how did Chris use it? What happened to the instrument in the end? Please do add any other details you know about this remarkable bass in the comments below. This episode is sponsored by smartwater®Ruth E. Carter is a trailblazing costume designer known for her work on Malcolm X, the Black Panther films, Sinners, and so many more iconic works. She has been awarded Academy Awards, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award, the Costume Designers Guild Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But before that, she was exploring Black literature and history in Black Studies-focused enrichment programs in her home state of Massachusetts. When she was a young adult, she was deconstructing clothing and taking notes from grunge scenes, citing Lisa Bonet and Madonna as early beauty and style inspiration. In our conversation, Ruth walks us through her life and career, explaining how the girl who dressed like a grunge artist would introduce Afrofuturism to the world. During our chat, Ruth tells us about how she has always drawn on her interest in literary, dramatic, and visual arts to design on film sets. She shared the initial culture shock she experienced at her HBCU, Hampton, and how the theater department helped her blend her artistic sensibilities with the coiffed presentation of her classmates. Ruth detailed how she drew on these experiences in her first position in School Daze, and how her dedication led to the first of many creative collaborations with directors like Spike Lee, which would shape her career. Our conversation ranges from the specific way she employs the lessons her psychologist mother taught her, like gaining and keeping people's trust, to spending time with Tina Turner. We discussed so much of her portfolio, and what compelled her to begin archiving her designs, which now make up the traveling exhibition “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design.” Ruth is open about her painstakingly detailed commitment to historical accuracy and how her early exposure to ideas about the future being a site of freedom and exploration shaped the visual identity for Black Panther. On June 14, 1863, US Major General John Adams Dix received the following directive from General-in-Chief Henry Halleck: "All your available force should be concentrated to threaten Richmond, by seizing and destroying their railroad bridges over the South and North Anna Rivers, and do them all the damage possible." With General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia marching toward Gettysburg and only a limited Confederate force guarding Richmond, Halleck sensed a rare opportunity for the Union cause. In response, Dix, who had lived a life of considerable public service but possessed limited military experience, gathered his men and began a slow advance. During the ensuing operation, 20,000 US troops would threaten the Confederate capital and seek to cut the railroads supplying Lee's army in Pennsylvania. To some, Dix's campaign presented a tremendous chance for US forces to strike hard at Richmond while Lee was off in Pennsylvania. To others, it was an unnecessary lark that tied up units deployed more effectively in protecting Washington and confronting Lee's men on Northern soil. In this study, Newsome offers an in-depth look into this little-known Federal advance against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign. The first full-length examination of Dix's venture, this volume not only delves into the military operations at the time, but also addresses concurrent issues related to diplomacy, US war policy, and the involvement of enslaved people in the Federal offensive. Gettysburg's Southern Front also points to the often-unrecognized value in examining events of the US Civil War beyond the larger famous battles and campaigns. At the time, political and military leaders on both sides carefully weighed Dix's efforts at Richmond and understood that the offensive had the potential to generate dramatic results. In fact, this piece of the Gettysburg Campaign may rank as one of the Union war effort's more compelling lost opportunities in the East, one that could have changed the course of the conflict.
