"Tough Times Don't Last, Tough People Do" We are honored to sit down with recently retired DFD Lt John Hampton as he wrapped up an amazing 25-year career. Growing up in Maryland, the son of a fireman, Lt Hampton knew he would go into a life of service as he entered the Army and joined the historic 82ndABN. After seeing combat action and developing his unique, hard-nosed leadership style he decided it was time to answer his calling by joining the Dallas Fire Department. Johnny was literally thrown into the fire as he joined one of the busiest stations in South Dallas, Station 44 off Lagow. Johnny is very candid in telling the story of his life and career and we are honored he trusted us at the caretaker of his journey. On July 21st, 2024, Lt Hampton entered Station 11 like any other morning and made a last minute decision to ride the engine to a structure fire call near downtown Dallas. The light rain coated the roadways, causing the rig's tail to begin to swerve and the entire engine collided with the short wall went over several feet below onto the train tracks. The race began to save LT Hampton from the wreckage as he was pinned for 45 minutes as he teammates and firefighting family worked. This is the story of the life and career of an amazing man, leader, husband, father, and servant. Thank you, Lt John Hampton, for your service to the country and to the city of Dallas.

"Gratitude is the space where we humble ourselves to the blessing of life itself." From the jump, Mindful B Anthony sets the tone for a Detroit story rooted in legacy, resilience, and transformation. In this Detroit is Different conversation, he takes us on a journey from his family's four-generation hold on Van Dyke and Mack—where his grandmother insisted “this land will always have value”—to the bus routes that taught him the city block by block, and the classrooms that sparked his love for math, language, and purpose. He reflects on leaving Renaissance for Southeastern, catching the 6 Mile across town before dawn, and navigating Hampton University's business of education while rediscovering his true calling in healing, creativity, and entrepreneurship. What begins with childhood alley basketball games and honor roll trophies unfolds into a life of activism with We the People of Detroit, a mentorship lineage through Charity Hicks and Tawana Petty, and the artistry of copper and crystals turned into “energy tools disguised as jewelry.” This episode is a blueprint of how Black Detroit's past—our migrations, our neighborhood pride, our community organizing—feeds the future of culture creators who, like Anthony, are shaping new ways of living, healing, and building legacy. If you've ever wondered how Detroit blocks, schools, buses, and bands prepare us for the world stage, this is the conversation you need to hear. ANOTHER BIG HUFF TO FINISH IT OFF, REFINER!!Welcome back to Salt's Neck for another week of fun and games with Harmony Cobel and her Aunt Sissy. Sissy lives in the shadow of Kier and the old Lumon Ether plant. Neither has made an appearance in this place for forty years or more, but Sissy still holds out hope. Harmony is searching for something. She's just sure Sissy didn't sell it to the poor as she claimed. Harmony is also dealing with some big-time mommy issues. She wasn't allowed to come home for her mother's funeral. She's had no closure and a lot of grieving for a LONG time now. She leaves her good buddy Hampton out in his cold truck while she tries to commune with the ghost of her long-dead ether-huffing mother. There is some healing...and some sleeping. An exhausted Harmony falls asleep in mom's bed. Hampton decides to retrieve her and enrage the Sissy-beast.How can I talk for two and a half hours about a 37 minute episode?? WE'RE BACK TO THE RE-WATCH THIS WEEK, REFINER!!Interviews are fun, and we love talking to the folks who make 'Severance' so incredible, but, we should never forget, this podcast was built on insanely detailed rewatches!! This week we are getting back into the S2 complete 'Severed' Re-watch with PART ONE of "Sweet Vitriol."We have not heard or seen anything from Harmony Cobel since her very scary parking lot run-in with Helena Eagan and her gorilla of a driver in the episode "Who is Alive?" Guess what??!! Harmony made the trip to Salt's Neck! In this episode, we catch up with her out on the road. She's headed back to where she grew up. She's needing some things she left at home back when she was whisked away to be a star at the Myrtle Eagan School for Girls. This time out we meet up with Hampton at the Drippy Pot. He's one of Cobel's oldest and dearest friends. He's also in the grip of a massive ether addiction, much like the rest of this tiny and dilapidated town. Oh, and if you're in need of ether, Hampton can set you up. As Sissy calls him, he's a 'huff peddler.'Oh, yeah...Sissy. We're going to meet Harmony's Aunt Celestine 'Sissy' Cobel. She's Harmony's mother Charlotte's sister. Sissy does NOT have a warm spot in her heart for Harmony, Hampton or this backwards little town on the seashore where she feels trapped by her beliefs. Or, maybe she does still feel some kinship with Harmony...she's just not willing to show it.It's time to hop in the VW Rabbit and head for the chilly coast of P.E. as we open the file called "Sweet Vitriol." Episode 354 of RevolutionZ continues the sequence presenting the Oral History titled The Wind Cries Freedom. In this third installment, as an opening act, interviewee Leslie Zinn reflects on the finished oral history of a revolution that emerged from conditions similar to our own. She argues that revolution isn't utopian but tangible—a possibility within reach if we're willing to learn from each other's experiences and unite around shared values and aims. Then, conveyed from the book itself, Bill Hampton, takes us to a church in San Antonio where a congregation's nonviolent stand against violent deportations became, in their time and their world, a turning point in the immigrant rights movement. Hampton's account reveals how compassion and incredible determination transformed violent repression into tentative solidarity, even converting a Trump-supporting sheriff into a future ally. Could that happen in our world? Listen, see it in your mind, and decide for yourself. The heart of the episode explores how scattered resistance movements began weaving themselves together into something more powerful. Instead of working in separate silos—climate activists here, labor organizers there, anti-racism advocates somewhere else—people started supporting each other's struggles. They protested what they opposed but also demanded, fought for, and built alternatives they wanted to see: sanctuaries instead of deportations, new housing instead of military spending, sincere dialogue instead of reflexive division.Guevara's questions and the interviewees' answers don't offer a blueprint but a provocation. They show one successful path. Can our movements connect more deeply, as their's did? Can we recognize that our diverse struggles are fundamentally linked as they did? Can we commit to supporting each other across differences? Will our path to such gains be similar to theirs? If not, how will it differ? The Wind Cries Freedom challenges us to imagine resistance evolving into revolution—not through violence or top-down control, but through solidarity and shared vision and strategy. It asks us to consider whether such transformation might be possible in our own world, emerging from our own movements and struggles. It asks what does our activism need to embody to build the world we need? It hopes that by documenting the approaches of its related future revolution, in the words of its participants, it may offer useful insights while making real the prospects of winning.Support the show

On today’s episode of The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast, the crew tackled breaking news, Hollywood rumors, real-talk about intimacy, and major updates in the Charlie Kirk shooting case. The RSMS crew digs into a string of terroristic threats that forced lockdowns and class cancellations at multiple historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the U.S. Institutions such as Alabama State, Hampton, Virginia State, Southern, Bethune-Cookman, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and Morehouse were affected. Although no credible threat has been confirmed, the timing—shortly after Charlie Kirk’s shooting—has many students and administrators on edge, with heightened security in place. Rickey and the crew sat down with a sex and intimacy therapist, who broke down how open communication, honesty, and vulnerability can deepen relationships and help couples keep the spark alive. And during the last hour, the crew revealed that a suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is now in custody. The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, arrested after a tip from someone close to him, according to Utah law enforcement. Authorities say Robinson acted alone, and there are indications in messages and bullet engravings that the shooting was politically motivated.
