This week is the anniversary of two events which define the State in the U.S., both in the past and today. In 1969, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Chicago Police Dept. assassinated Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and his associate Mark Clark while they slept in Hampton's home. Hampton had been an up and coming, inspiring, leader in the Chicago community and worked to build coalition with a variety of groups in the area. The FBI had viewed Hampton as a potential “messiah,” who needed to be “neutralized.” When the COINTELPRO program was exposed, it was clear that the FBI had worked to eliminate domestic enemies like Hampton and the Black Panther Party. In 1980, the rape and murder of four Catholic missionary nuns by U.S. backed death squads sparked international outrage and criticism of President Carter's support for the government in El Salvador. Carter initially suspended aid to the regime, he later reinstated it, and President Reagan continued this support. Later in the 1990s, when documents were declassified revealing the extent to which the U.S. support torture and terror campaigns, former NJ congressman Robert Torricelli said that it was "now clear that while the Reagan Administration was certifying human rights progress in El Salvador they knew the terrible truth that the Salvadoran military was engaged in a widespread campaign of terror and torture".Despite a history of these events, the movement continues. As Hampton said, "You can jail a revolutionary, but you can't jail the revolution."In 2025, the Trump administration is sending ICE to terrorize undocumented people in communities across the country, designating dissidents as "terrorists" and provoking war with Venezuela. We also just recently witnessed "blowback" from Salvadoran style death squads in Afghanistan with the shooting of national guard solders in Washington D.C. International Revolutionary Day, marked each year on December 4th, is a day of remembrance and reflection on the radical struggle for liberation embodied by Fred Hampton and the Black Panther Party. His vision of collective power, rooted in socialism and Black liberation, challenged state violence and poverty, making him a target of government surveillance and repression. On December 4, 1969, Hampton was assassinated in a police raid coordinated with the FBI, a killing that galvanized movements worldwide. There's a belief that the delay in investigating the Pike River mine disaster will influence the Crown's decision on charging those responsible. Police believe they have sufficient evidence to lay manslaughter charges against officials involved. This week marks 15 years since the 29 men never came home from the West Coast mine. Criminal defence lawyer Nigel Hampton KC told Mike Hosking the investigation delay, the public interest, and the families' memories will play a role in the decision. (2:00) Being policy-focused rather than party-focused in governmental policy should be the focus. (8:30) Dr. Hampton describes his career focus on improving metabolic health, including how to incentivize doctors to help people discontinue medications and reduce the cost of care. (12:00) RFK Jr. may not always speak clearly to the mainstream public in a way that resonates. Dr. Hampton still faces challenges in the mainstream medical space, where other doctors struggle to embrace certain concepts; for example, many of his peers continue to have trouble accepting the idea that saturated fat is not harmful. (14:00) Despite the benefits of a low-carb or ketogenic diet and its positive effects on things like diabetes and other metabolic diseases, it is still not accepted by many doctors. Apparently, they didn't get the memo! (16:00) They discuss food deserts and their effects on the community. (21:00) Advocating and Taking Action Dr. Hampton describes a current concept in healthcare being initiated by Advocate Trinity. (22:00) Much of it is educating people about food and lifestyle, and helping them to change their habits for the better (28:00) Vinnie admits he is not a fan of GLP-1s, but he understands how they can be a valuable tool for teaching and helping people adopt new habits. (31:00) They discuss the negative aspects of GLP-1s. The muscle loss associated with GLP-1 is more pronounced than that observed with natural weight loss. Muscle is essential for so many reasons, including boosting insulin sensitivity. (38:00) It is the metabolic engine of the body! Increasing muscle mass prevents you from becoming fragile.
