This week, we've played an unconscionable number of demos, so we run through a whole bunch of the ones we mostly liked at Steam Next Fest and the Tribeca Festival. Then, Willa interviews Tribeca Games vice president Casey Baltes with a tin can inside a submarine apparently and Robin tries her hardest to make it listenable.Timestamps:(00:20) Just a whole bunch of nothing(04:35) Dice Gambit(10:30) Cast and Chill(14:00) Morse(18:15) Prison of Husks(28:30) MotionRec(33:20) Coffee Talk Tokyo(35:30) Project Arrow(37:15) KuloNiku: Bowl Up!(41:10) Dispatch(47:15) MIO: Memories in Orbit(55:45) Possessor(s)(1:00:55) Absolum(1:04:46) Death Howl(1:09:00) Cairn(1:13:10) Sleep Awake(1:15:40) Take Us North(1:22:35) Mixtape(1:29:30) Casey Baltes Interview(1:55:10) What else have Willa and Robin been up to this week? In Are You a Professer or a Possessor?, Pastor Byron Chesney delivers a powerful and sobering Easter message from Matthew 7:21–23, warning that not everyone who claims to know Christ will enter Heaven. Using Scripture to contrast outward religious appearance with true inward conversion, he exposes the danger of trusting in works, routines, or words without genuine faith and transformation. From Judas to the Rich Young Ruler, Pastor Byron challenges listeners to examine whether they're simply professing Christ—or truly possessing Him through a life of obedience, surrender, and following Jesus. Eternity is at stake. Don't settle for lip service.

Cloning has been a staple of science fiction for decades, allowing filmmakers to explore questions of identity, morality, and even power. Let's get into it!Top 5 Clones in Film and TVThe Replicants – Blade Runner (1982) & Blade Runner 2049 (2017)These artificial humans blur the line between man and machine, raising questions about free will and identity. Duncan Jones' Sam Bell – Moon (2009)Sam Rockwell's lonely lunar worker is one of the most emotionally compelling clone characters ever. Dolly the Sheep – Jurassic Park (1993)Okay, not actually Dolly, but the cloned dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are the ultimate cautionary tale about playing God. Life, uh, finds a way!Jango Fett & The Clone Troopers – Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020)The galaxy's most famous army, these soldiers might share the same DNA, but their individual personalities shine through in the series, making them some of the best-developed clones in fiction.Michael Keaton's Many Copies – Multiplicity (1996)A comedic take on cloning, this underrated film sees Keaton's character create clones to help him manage life—only for things to spiral hilariously out of control.Feature Review: Infinity Pool (2023)From the mind of Brandon Cronenberg (son of body-horror legend David Cronenberg), Infinity Pool is a disturbing and mind-bending thriller that plays with themes of identity, privilege, and morality.James (Alexander Skarsgård) is a struggling writer vacationing at an exclusive island resort with his wife. When they meet a mysterious couple (led by Mia Goth's unsettlingly seductive Gabi), things take a dark turn. A tragic accident leads to James being arrested and presented with a bizarre offer: he can either be executed for his crime or pay to have a clone take his place. This is not one for the kids—Infinity Pool is a disturbing, trippy film that will appeal to fans of Possessor, The Lighthouse, or Under the Skin. It's a psychological descent into madness.Kids Feature: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020)Switching gears, we head to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the animated series that not only fleshed out the prequel trilogy but also gave us some of the best storytelling in the franchise. While some early episodes skew young, The Clone Wars matures into one of the best animated series ever. It's perfect for Star Wars fans of all ages, providing emotional depth and epic action. This episode iWe love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. David Keddie kicked off our spring semester Friday Night teaching series entitled, The LORD is There: Key Moments in the Old Testament. David's message focused on Melchizedek, first mentioned in Genesis:"After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said,'Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!'And Abram gave him a tenth of everything." (Genesis 14:17-20)

How does Jackie compare to other female psychopaths in film? Tune in as we explore the psychology behind her manipulative, calculated, and terrifying nature.
Passage: 17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) 19 And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.' 24 I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. Let Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share.” (Genesis 14:17-24 ESV) Song: High Priest (https://open.spotify.com/track/5f36B77R5uSj8A3aTxqQJC?si=26cd661283a24d49) by Jonathan Ogden Lyrics: Oh the humility Of a King inside a manger Our shepherd and our saviour on the cross You gave Your life for me Now how can I repay You? All the riches I could gain are not enough You are the Prince of Peace You're our Great High Priest You have made a way for me You have set me free You got thirsty You got tired You were tempted You were tried And You can fully sympathise Cause You know just what it's like to live this life Fully God and fully man Who can fully comprehend the mystery? You are the Prince of Peace You're our Great High Priest You have made a way for me You have set me free I've found freedom in You Jesus There is nothing in between us You turn mourning into dancing And sorrow into joy oh Lord Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen. -The Book of Common Prayer

John 14 · Shalom – Prince of Peace, prophesied about by the prophet Isaiah: and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.· Immanuel - God With Us Prayer and Reflection Questions: 1. Can you think of a time you felt particularly close to God? For me, I often experience Him in nature. There's a mountain in North Carolina my family has spent a significant amount of time on. From it, you can look down on clouds and the Blue Ridge mountains and it never fails to bring me into a deeper awareness of God's presence with me.2. It can look a lot of ways, but as you think of your “God moment,” would you pray a prayer of appreciation (out-loud) of who the Lord is for you and your appreciation of His character. Perhaps one of the names of God has held special significance for you this season – thank Him for that.3. Now, knowing that He is Immanuel, notice where He is with you at this moment. The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus to us, and so ask the Spirit for an awareness of God's presence with you.4. Ask Jesus directly what He wants you to know, or what His good plans for healing are for you today. For more information about this Advent season, visit our Christmas at Fellowship page. On their 150th, Aaron and Derek tackle 2020's sci-fi psychological horror film "Possessor" written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg. They discuss the nature of class and privacy shown in the movie, the bleakness of an alternative 2008, and the idea of possession through unexplained scientific means. They also get into comparisons of Brandon's work with his father's, the purposeful use of gore and violence, losing yourself, and many other aspects of the film. Derek is cleaning cat litter. Aaron is a worm. What does it take to liberate people from exceptionalism? To liberate a teaching? Such a pernicious snare, that saying of yours, “family first.” It was your fear of losing the tribe that led you to elect a king and build a city against the will of God. So he sent his Shepherd to rescue his sheep from Cain's cities, to liberate his people and the Torah from the stone idols fashioned by Cain's sons. For those who have stayed with me on the podcast all these years, let me say it plainly:The idea that all people are created equal—an American principle—is beautiful and correct, but like the Torah, it is held hostage by identity politics. Like the preaching of the Cross under a Roman standard, it has been corrupted by a military-industrial nationalist agenda that feeds on the broken backs of impoverished women and children.Nothing changes under the sun.The Gospel of Luke is the Gospel to the Poor. It is a radical Gospel of Liberation. It this scroll of the Torah, the Lion of Judah, breaking free from the gilded prison of Herod's Temple—shattering the gates of brass—raging against you for your sake on behalf of the poor.He who has ears to hear to hear, let him hear!Still, the scroll of Luke is not a “liberation theology.” It is a warning that we must forsake what we have built, not build back again, but abandon what Cain built to roam freely with the Lion in his land. As Paul said:“For if I build again the things I have destroyed, I prove myself to be a sinner.” (Galatians 2:18)To borrow a term from psychology (one that I've used before), prophetic preaching keeps the disciple in a perpetual state of cognitive dissonance, unable to fall back on the natural human instinct to reconcile our innate hypocrisies. The teaching of Scripture is not “God is love.” The teaching of Scripture is “you are a hypocrite.”Until you submit to this repetitive literary frame, you can't hear what Moses said, let alone Jesus. You can't be set free. That is why the Qur'an went to such great lengths to stress St. Paul's teaching of submission.Because the “children of the book” are no such thing. They still belong to Pharaoh. This week, I discuss Luke 7:11-16.Show Notesש-ע-ר (shin-‘ayn-resh) / ش-ع-ر (shīn-‘ayn-rāʾ)The Hebrew word שַֽׁעַר (sha'ar) means “gate” or “entrance.” It corresponds to πύλη (pylē) in Luke 7:12, functional with Ruth 4:"Now Boaz went up to the gate (שַּׁעַר֮, sha‘ar) and sat down there, and behold, the close relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, so he said, “Turn aside, friend, sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down." (Ruth 4:1)This root relates to awareness, feeling, and literary expression in Arabic:شِعْر (shi‘r)—“poetry”: This is one of the most common words from this root, referring to poetry or verse, which is central to Arabic literary tradition.شَاعِر (shā‘ir) - “poet”: This word describes a person who composes poetry, playing a significant role in Arabic and Islamic culture.شَعَرَ (sha‘ara) - “to feel” or “to perceive”: This verb means to feel or become aware, capturing the idea of sensitivity or perception.مَشَاعِر (mashā‘ir) - “feelings” or “emotions”: This word, in the plural form, denotes feelings, emotions, or sentiments, often used to express emotional sensitivity.شعار (shi‘ār) “logo, emblem, or slogan”: identification or awareness through a symbol, slogan, or distinguishing mark, a “sign.”مَشْعَر (mash‘ar) - “place of awareness” or “sacred monument”: Used in Islamic contexts, mashʿar refers to a sacred or symbolic place, often in pilgrimage sites like Mashʿar al-Ḥarām near Mecca.נ-ע-ם (nun-‘ayn-mem) / ن-ع-ي-م (nūn-ʿayn-yāʾ-mīm)The word Ναΐν (Nain) is derived from the Hebrew word נָעִים (na'im), meaning “pleasant” or “lovely.” Behold, how good and pleasant (na'im) it is when brothers dwell in unity! (psalm 133:1)It, too, corresponds (prescriptively) to the books of Ruth נָעֳמִי (Naomi) but also to the Qur'an. For reference: “Blessing,” “favor,” “bounty” (ni‘mah): نِعْمَة “And if you count the blessings of God, you will not be able to enumerate them.” (Surah Ibrahim, 14:34)“Bliss,” “luxury,” “delight” (na‘īm): نَعِيم “In gardens of delight.” (Surah Al-Waqi'ah, 56:12)“To live in ease or comfort” (na‘ama): نَعَمَ “And for you in them are many comforts.” (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:21)“Bestower of blessings,” “benevolent one” (mun‘im): مُنْعِم “And indeed, your Lord is the Forgiving, Possessor of great bounty.” (Surah An-Najm, 53:32)“Soft,” “gentle,” “smooth” (nā‘im): نَاعِم “[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant.” (Surah Al-Ghashiyah, 88:8)“The blessings” (al-ni‘am): النِّعَم “They recognize the favor of God; then they deny it.” (Surah An-Nahl, 16:83)“Softness,” “ease,” “comfort” (na‘mah): نَعْمَة “Lest His punishment should befall you if you deny his blessing.” (Surah Ibrahim, 14:7) ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Oh yeah, the Halloween Hustle hasn't stopped! We continue on into November with another film, like Possessor, that I always wanted to watch but just never got around to. With the sequel in theaters now, I figured this would be as good a time as any. Smile has a lot more going on than I expected, and it gave Chris and I a lot to talk about. We still had to take a moment to discuss our love of White Castle though. We hope you enjoy the show! The Legend of Hell House (1973), Hausu (1977), The Abandoned (2006) In older small towns, there is usually some old house on the outskirts of town, maybe someone lives there, maybe not. But it is one that young kids dare themselves to go up to. And if you do dare to enter this dwelling, you'll find creaking boards, dust covered items from furniture to knick-knacks, and a lot of cobwebs. And any noise, no matter how small it might, gets the mind racing. There is nothing better for the Halloween season than sitting down with a nice Haunted House movie. Which is why we decided to tackle 3 of our favorite scary movies about demented dwellings, as well as ones that we feel that need more attention. Going back to the very beginning of cinema, with Georges Méliès' The House of the Devil (1896), it shows how important this sub-genre is, and why filmmakers continue to go back to it. When done correctly, can be highly effective, and damn scary. Films mentioned in this episode: The Abandoned (2006), Aftermath (1994), Amityville Horror (1979), The Changeling (1980), The Chooper (1971), Color Out of Space (2019), The Conjuring (2013), Creepshow (1982), Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974), Dust Devil (1992), Dracula (1931), Escape to Witch Mountain (1975), The Evil (1978), Fletch (1985), Frankenstein (1931), Genesis (1998), The Ghost of Sierre de Cobre (1964), Hardware (1990), The Haunting (1963), Hausu aka House (1977), The House of Clocks (1989), The House of the Devil (1896), The House on Haunted Hill (1959), The House that Dripped Blood (1971), Ice from the Sun (1999), Infinity Pool (2023), The Innocents (1961), Jaws (1975), The Legend of Hel House (1973), The Old Dark House (1932), Paranormal Activity (2007), Pet Sematary (1989), Poltergeist (1982), Possessor (2020), Salem's Lot (1979), Scrapbook (2000), The Shining (1980), Stir of Echoes (1999), Subconscious Cruelty (2000), Tennessee Gothic (2019), Terrified (2017), Twin of Evil (1972), The Uninvited (1944), The Watcher in the Woods (1980), The Woman in Black (1989)
Much love to our Patron Jerika! She contributes to the Halloween Hustle this week and she has Chris and I getting into a few debates about this film. Possessor has been on my radar for a long time and I was very curious to see what the son of David Cronenberg would be able to do in the same landscape his father became a master in. The bodies get done horribly, everything is weird, it's violent as hell and we here at HVH would have it no other way! We hope you enjoy the show. Hannah and Anna from Cinema Slab joined us as we covered Brandon Cronenberg's Possessor and lemme tell you, this young director is a chip off the old block (RIP David Cronenberg). While Pete was struggling to complete whole sentences, the Cinema Slab gals delivered a rocking discussion about this very weird, thought provoking film. Even Charlie liked this movie and he hates the weird stuff. We urge you to watch Possessor before you listen and then join the conversation.

Tuesday, 16 July 2024 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. Matthew 1:9 “And Uzziah begot Jotham, and Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah” (CG). The previous verse finished with the words, “and Joram begot Uzziah.” The ongoing genealogy continues with, “And Uzziah begot Jotham.” The first note of Jotham replacing his father is noted in 2 Kings 15:7. However, the main commentary on his time as king is recorded later in 2 Kings 15 – “In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, Jotham the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, began to reign. 33 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok. 34 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord; he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done. 35 However the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. He built the Upper Gate of the house of the Lord.” 2 Kings 15:32-35 The name Jotham means Yehovah is Upright. He was a good king according to the overall record of his reign. Next Matthew records, “and Jotham begot Ahaz.” In Judah's record, there are good kings and there are bad kings. In this case, the guy was a dud. He is first noted in 2 Kings 15:38. However, the main record of his time as king begins in 2 Kings 16. There it says – “Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God, as his father David had done. 3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel; indeed he made his son pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had cast out from before the children of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.” 2 Kings 16:2-4 The record of King Ahaz continues through all of 2 Kings 16. He is also mentioned in Isaiah's famous prophecy concerning the coming Messiah highlighted in Isaiah 7:14. His name means He Has Grasped or Possessor. As noted, he is remembered as a bad king. With that, Matthew continues with “and Ahaz begot Hezekiah.” Hezekiah is first mentioned in 2 Kings 16:20. The record of Hezekiah's reign begins in detail in 2 Kings 18, and it continues through 2 Kings 20. Of him, the record says – “Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah. 3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.” 2 Kings 18:1-3 As such, he is considered a good king of Israel. It was during his reign that the northern tribes of Israel were taken into exile. His name means Yah Strengthens. Life application: In these three kings we have two generally considered good and one whose record defines him as bad. These people made their choices in life, just as each one of us must do. A large portion of our responsibilities extends beyond our immediate selves as well. If we have children, it is our responsibility to instruct them in the ways of the Lord. If we fail to do that, the chances of them turning out to be losers will be much greater than if we are careful to do so. And yet, there are bad children that come from good parents and good children that come from failed parents. Even good parents who instruct their children may be a bit overbearing in how they do so. One cannot beat Jesus into a child. Rather, parents need to live out their lives loving Jesus, directing their children to Him, but not forcing Him upon them. As with any normal relationship, people tend to turn against being forced to do things. There is no set answer in how to raise children because each is an individual who will eventually make his or her own decisions, but the more attention we give in raising them in a proper and godly manner, the better the chances are that they will eventually also follow the Lord. Time is short and children grow up fast. Don't delay doing what you should be doing, and be sure to continue doing it all your days. Little eyes are watching. Little minds need to be filled. Do your best while you have the time. Tell the next generation about the goodness of the Lord. This early and often instruction will at least set the next generation on the right path. Lord God, help us as we raise the next generation of children. The world is getting more and more opposed to the message of Jesus. Perversion is everywhere. The odds are stacked against our children, and we need to be alert and responsible in how we raise them. Help us in this, please. Give us wisdom and strength to bring them to a right understanding of our precious Lord. Amen.
Britton Taylor discusses Genesis 14:18-20—“Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: ‘Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.' And he gave him a tithe of all.”

A vast chasm separates those who merely profess adherence to religious doctrine and those who possess an unwavering, lived faith in Christ. The former cloaks themselves in the vestments of piety, yet their hearts remain untouched by the transformative fires of true belief. In stark contrast, the latter bear the unmistakable hallmarks of souls that have surrendered to the sacred embrace of heaven's truth - a humility that defies arrogance, a love that transcends mere words. For the possessor of authentic faith does not merely voice allegiance; they embody it, treasuring it as the most precious of jewels, a guiding star that illuminates their every step. Theirs is a devotion that permeates their very essence, a lived testament to the immutable power of trust in Jesus Christ. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology Alli and I are talking about generosity under fire – in other words, how we can keep giving sacrificially giving even when we feel like a tube of toothpaste that's been rolled so many times, there's nothing left in the tube. Should our physical and financial resources be the final arbitrator of our generosity or should we maintain a “what's mine is yours for the glory of God” posture when like the widow of Zaraphath, we're down to our last bag of flour and bottle of oil. John Wesley, a renowned church father, and theologian, once preached: “When the Possessor of heaven and earth brought you into being and placed you in this world, he placed you here not as a proprietor, but as a steward.” In other words, if you've given your heart to Jesus, you're supposed to give Him everything else too. No matter what name is listed on the title of your car or registered under your Apple ID, our stuff, our time, and even the ever-changing emotions that flow through our hearts and minds, they're on loan to us to use for God's kingdom purposes. Everything we have can be used as an asset in the preeminent business of loving God and loving people. Conversely, anything we're hanging onto tighter than we're holding onto Jesus can become an idol. Today's going to be like a teaspoon of wasabi, y'all – it'll probably go down spicy and might just make your eyes water. So please grab a tumbler of iced coffee and your Bible – unless you're holding onto a bouquet of helium balloons for a clown friend, of course – and come hang out on the porch with us!
