Kia ora Mosen at Largers. Recently, it was a pleasure to sit down virtually with the legend that is Larry Skutchan to talk about all that APH has been working on lately. The Mantis, their new Braille display with a qwerty keyboard is creating quite a buzz, and we'll be discussing it in-depth. We'll also talk Studio Recorder, Nearby Explorer Online, learning to code and learning to type, crossword puzzles and more. This was one of the last interviews recorded with Larry in an APH capacity, as he retired from the organisation on 31 August. This is a very special episode of the Tech Doctor podcast. Robert and Allison celebrate Apple's 40th birthday with a panel of Apple accessibility rock stars. We were fortunate to have author and Mac journalist, Shelly Brisbin join us. Shelly started using the Mac in 1986. She brought us a very unique perspective as a technical writer, publisher and low-vision Mac user. In recent times, Shelly has thoroughly explored and written about iOS accessibility. Her current book entitled: iOS Access for All is a comprehensive guide to all of the iOS accessibility features. To purchase and/or learn more about the book, go to the book's Web Page Shelly has a new podcast called The Parallel which she refers to as a “Tech podcast with accessibility sprinkles.” Finally, you can keep in touch with Shelly by following her on Twitter. Shelly's twitter name is @Shelly. With around 400 instructional podcasts under his belt, David Woodbridge is arguably the most prolific Apple accessibility podcaster. We all learn from the excellent podcasts that David produces. Go Here to find all of David's podcasts. David has a free book available in iTunes where he helps blind people get started with Apple products. To find the book, search for “iSee” in the iTunes store. David does a weekly radio show on Vision Australia Radio about accessibility. The show is also available as a podcast. To access the show notes, go to This Website You can follow David on Twitter. David's Twitter name is @dwoodbridge. Larry Skutchan harnessed the power of the Apple II in 1983 when he wrote one of the first fully accessible talking word processors. We introduce this podcast by playing a sample of the Echo II speech synthesizer which Larry's word processor used to speak the text that was on the Apple's screen. Larry went on to write a very popular terminal program for the Apple II. ProTerm enabled us to access such popular online services as GEnie, CompuServe and hundreds of BBS systems. Larry went on to write a very popular screen reader for DOS called ASAP. At present, Larry is the Director of Technology Product Research at the American Printing House for the Blind He and his team, along with several other companies, are developing the first inexpensive refreshable Braille reading and note taking device. Go to the Transforming Braille Website to find out more information. Larry told us that his team at APH will soon be seeking beta testers for a new GPS app called Nearby Explorer for iOS which will be released later this year. To sign up to be considered as a possible beta tester, go Here APH will be releasing an iOS version of their famous Talking Typer software later this year as well. At present, APH has two apps available in the iOS app store. They are Virtual Brailler” and “Math Robot.” Allison and Robert were honored to celebrate Apple's birthday with this outstanding panel. We want to thank them for all that they do for Apple Accessibility. We loved hearing your stories and we learned from your unique perspectives. Thanks for spending time with us. If you are at all interested in the history of Apple Accessibility, give this podcast a listen.

When Dr. Robert Carter and Larry Skutchan sit down and have a conversation about accessible technology, you know the conversation will be both entertaining and informative. On this week's show, we bring you a rebroadcast of a recent Tech Doctor podcast where Robert and Larry discuss the past, present, and future of accessible technology. Sit back, enjoy, and learn!
Examining the Past Present and Future of Accessible Technology is a daunting task for a 50 minute podcast. The Tech Doctor, however, has searched the world over and found the man that can do the job. Larry Skutchan began his career thirty years ago by writing accessible word processing and telecommunications software for the Apple II. He went on to write an incredibly popular screen reader for MS DOS called ASAP (Automatic Screen Access Program). ASAP monitored the screen for changes and automatically spoke the information that the blind user needed to hear. Larry has continued to innovate in the development of accessible hardware and software by leading a group of 8 highly talented developers at the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville, Kentucky. A few years ago, Larry started his own podcast and began to encourage others to contribute podcasts of their own. Larry's web site has become one of the best repositories of information about blindness and technology on the internet. The site is of course, Blind Cool Tech. The Tech Doctor invites you to sit back and relax as you listen to this fascinating discussion. It is a guarantee that you will learn something.
This week we present a Main Menu exclusive! Larry Skutchan of The American Printing House for the Blind discusses and demonstrates some features of Book Port Plus, a new product from APH due for release some time in March. Larry talks about the philosophy behind the design of the product, giving us a glimpse into the decision-making process. He talks about why some features are present in the unit, why some features are not yet present, and what we can expect to see in subsequent updates to the product. Why did APH choose Vocalizer as the text to speech engine of choice? Why not Eloquence? Is there a possibility that another text-to-speech engine might be used in the future? What does APH plan to do with the wireless capabilities of the unit? Could we actually be able to listen to Internet radio from a Book Port Plus? How does one navigate menus and change settings on the unit? There is no way to provide a tutorial on how to use Book Port Plus in just 53 minutes, but I think Main Menu listeners will find Larry's examples and insights most fascinating. Main Menu airs on Saturdays at 1:00 UTC; that’s Fridays at 8:00 Eastern time in the U.S. Subscribe to the Main Menu podcast feed at: http://mainmenu.acbradio.org/rss.php Follow Main Menu on Twitter by visiting www.twitter.com/mainmenu
