Google is opening a dedicated accessibility space where Google engineers, researchers and wider product teams will focus on driving new innovation in accessible technology to help to remove some of the barriers that people with disabilities face everyday. The 'Accessibility Discovery Centre' has been built in consultation with local partners including Spinal Injuries Ireland, ADHD Ireland, the National Disability Authority, Fighting Blindness and Google's internal Disability Alliance employee resource group. Not only a workshop for research and product development, the centre will be a space for cross-industry learning, sharing information and building greater understanding and empathy among the accessibility community. The centre will also facilitate tours to increase awareness of the power of technology to empower those with disabilities. These tours will include real life examples of new technologies empowering people with disabilities via a series of interactive zones and gaming zones that bring to life the ways people with disabilities interact with technology. The opening is also an acknowledgement that there is much more to do to meet people's ever changing needs, allowing Google to learn from and partner with accessibility and disability communities to keep improving and innovating for users. Christopher Patnoe, Accessibility and Disability Inclusion, Google, said, "The Accessibility Discovery Centre isn't just a place where we will build better products and services - it's also a medium through which we can engage more effectively with different disability communities to better understand and address their needs. The new space can break down barriers and will ultimately change lives for the better. Today's event marks the beginning of that exciting journey that will first understand the myriad problems that exist and then address them in an inclusive manner." Sinead Burke, CEO, Tilting the Lens said, "As the CEO of Tilting the Lens, a global accessibility consultancy, our value is not merely in guidance and advice, but in creating meaningful connections. Over the past year, we have been fortunate to bring our clients together at Google's Accessibility Discovery Centre in London, where they have been energised by the advancements in accessible technology and ambitious to implement better practices in accessibility. As an Irish-based company, we're excited to leverage Google's global influence through their newest Accessibility Discovery Centre at home." Dr Gerald Craddock Chief Officer at The Centre for Excellence in Universal Design at the National Disability Authority commented: "The Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD) welcome the launch of the Accessible Discovery Centre (ADC), a great initiative by Google in creating an innovative space for co-designing and learning on accessibility with the disability communities in Ireland. These elements are the bedrock of Universal Design which is enshrined in legislation in Ireland and we readily recognise the value of this new initiative. The ADC will provide a 'discovery' space for everyone as well as demonstrating new and inclusive technologies." Among the first events to take place at the new space will be regular readouts with accessibility and disability communities. Developers will also be given the resources they need to integrate accessibility into products from the beginning of their processes. This is Google's first Accessibility Discovery Centre in the EU and builds on years of investment and innovation in helpful technology that can improve the lives of people with disabilities. Accessible Technology and Design Impacts All Learners - VSF Technology and the Power of Innovation for Access (EP.23) With Randal Walker, M.D. "When the wall of exclusion came down, everybody benefited" - Angela Glover Blackwell Have you heard of the "curb-cut effect"?  It is a phenomenon when a technology or innovation comes along meant to benefit one situation or demographic and ends up being used in unplanned ways by just about everyone who has access. Many technologies we rely on today have come about from assistive devices that were originally designed as accommodations for disabilities, e.g. keyboards and closed captions. When we design learning and technology with inclusion and access in mind, the outcomes is often that almost everyone benefits.  Pioneering and award winning physician with Mayo Clinic Division of Infectious Disease & Assistant Professor of Medicine, Emeritus, Randal Walker, M.D. joins Stacy Craft to share his story and journey innovating new assistive technologies for low vision readers. His creation, Visual Syntactic Text Formatting, has become an illuminating case study in the unexpected and meaningful ways assistive tools and technologies can benefit everyone. Questions? Feedback? In this episode 2, of our 3 part series, we'll explore how new technology can benefit our aging loved ones. From staying connected to living independently, we'll see how technology can help our loved ones stay independent and engaged in their lives.Technology is changing rapidly, and it's important that we're aware of the benefits and how it can help our loved ones. In this podcast episode, we'll explore how new technology can benefit seniors and help them stay connected and engaged in their lives. We hope you enjoy learning about this important topic! As we live longer and healthier lives, aging no longer means what it used to. Older adults are active, engaged members of society who use technology to stay connected with family and friends, manage their finances, stay healthy, and pursue their hobbies and interests.Technology has revolutionized health care, making it possible to monitor our health in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago. Fitness trackers, digital pillboxes, and mobile apps allow us to track our physical activity, sleep patterns, medications, and diet. This data can be used to identify trends and make lifestyle changes that can improve our health and well-being.For older adults living with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or COPD, technology can be a vital tool for managing their health. Digital health tools can help them track their symptoms and medication use, schedule doctor's appointments and medication refills and connect with their care team. However, it can also present challenges, such as those related to privacy and security. Ultimately, the decision of when and how to use technology in the care of older adults should be made by the older adults themselves, in consultation with their families and caregivers.Technology has the potential to greatly improve the lives of older adults. It is important that we continue to explore ways to incorporate it into our caregiving practices in a way that is respectful of the needs and preferences of our patients.Topics I will discuss in this episode include: ✅ What types of technologies are used in health management for older adults? ✅ What are the benefits of using technology to manage the health of older adults? ✅ What challenges do older adults face in using digital health tools? ✅ How do technologies help seniors manage chronic conditions? ✅ What are the best practices for incorporating technology into senior care? ✅ Who decides when and how to use technology in senior care? ✅ How do families and caregivers feel about using technology in the care of their loved ones? ✅ How do seniors feel about health tech? ✅ How can we ensure that technology is used safely and effectively in the care of older adults? ✅ What are some of the risks of using technology later in life? ✅ What challenges does aging pose for the development of digital health solutions? ✅ How can the tech industry & the aging community collaborate to innovate accessible technology? ✅ How will advances in technology impact the way we monitor & manage health in older adults?Listen to part 1: "Hanh Brown - Technology and Older Adults: 10 Things You Need to Know"Listen to part 1 on Apple Podcasts

5 Things In 15 Minutes The Podcast: Bringing Good Vibes to DEI

This week I was reminded that every story is nuanced – sometimes, I miss the [whole/complete] picture when researching the stories. In the last 5 Things, I shared how Shopify's CEO was humble and kind in handling layoffs. A reader so smartly responded:While they lost their jobs due to his mistake he still made over $20 million and cashed out more than $623 million in equity last year. To me, this raises huge questions about internal equity, executive compensation, and holding decision-makers accountable for their decisions. Instead, once again, we will likely see huge numbers of lower-wage, junior, and shared service (where most diversity exists in US companies) employees paying the price.Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Perfectly put.And yet, in addition to some layoffs, I'm also seeing salary bumps and bonuses announced across industries as a potential antidote to still-high resignation numbers. Does that count as a good vibe?Ultimately, there are so many gray areas, and there are always trade-offs. I'm hopeful we will mostly see leaders choose the path that causes the least harm. I'm reminded of what my friend Jess Pettitt says, “Do the best you can with what you have some of the time."Another reader had a question about Disney's Fairy Godmothers from last week… we inadvertently left off an apostrophe, causing the story about going gender-free to make no sense. Sorry for the confusion! To summarize Fairy Godmothers in Training --> Fairy Godmother's Apprentices. Here are the good vibes I found this week:How the World's Biggest Four-Day Workweek Trial Run Changed People's Lives in the UKSpotify Allowed Its Employees to Work From Anywhere in the World and Its Turnover Rate DroppedGen Z Knows What It Wants From Employers And Employers Want ThemU.S. Companies Support Harvard, UNC in Supreme Court Affirmative Action CasesMicrosoft Has Taken a Proactive Approach to Accessible Technology and Disability HiringRead the full blog here: https://www.theequalityinstitute.com/equality-insights-blog/5-things-trade-offs Join thousands of readers by subscribing to the 5 Things newsletter. Has Steven finally lost his mind?Next up, Shaun has some explaining to do after listeners noticed a problem with last week's podcast. But were the audio gremlins due to incompetence or was it sabotage? Then it's on to some exciting news from Orbit Research. They have announced a new product called the Orbit Slate. This is a Braille display with a difference, as it features not just one line of Braille cells but multiple lines. Although there is not a lot of information regarding availability and pricing, there's no denying that Orbit are really shaking up the world of Braille. HumanWare have also announced a new product this week called the Stellar Trek. This GPS device features two cameras that are capable of detecting and directing users to doors and building entrances. Could this be a must-have device for mobility or are apps such as Google Maps or Apple Maps all we need? And finally, there is some amazing news from Aira. In their ongoing mission to get the Aira service available to everyone, they have announced a new desktop app for Windows and Mac. But that's not all. They have also announced that Aira will be available on the BlindShell Classic 2 phone shortly. But wait, that's still not all. They also unveiled that Aira will be available on the ARX Wearable hardware. This means that, for the first time, we will be able to use Aira without having to take out our smartphones and hold them out in front of us. The ARX Wearable features a bone conduction headset with a built-in camera which Aira agents can use to assist customers. Exciting stuff, and there was also a mention that a further announcement will be made in August regarding the Envision Glasses! We can't wait to get our hands and faces on these wearables to test them out."

What new technologies will exist for blind people in the longer term? Joining Steven Scott this time around is Shaun Preece and Tim Schwartz and the guys dive right in with their predictions. Starting with Tim, is it going to be wearables that take over the physical smartphone in the future? Is it all going to be about glasses, watches and more? And if so, how will this benefit the blind and partially sighted community? Steven takes it one step further suggesting that the role of health tech in the future may in fact bring an end to eye conditions completely. Imagine a world where eye conditions can be detected early and treated or age-related conditions can be cured? Steven ponders over whether this is a good thing or not. And Shaun weighs in on his thoughts on wireless charging technology. Could this be the next step in changing how we consume electricity over the air?
