Why Willpower Never Beats Your Subconscious featuring Thais Gibson

The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2026 70:44

Thais Gibson is the co-founder of the Personal Development School and the creator of Gibson Integrated Attachment Theory, whose work on attachment and subconscious rewiring has reached more than 75 million people. He holds a PhD, is certified in over 13 therapeutic modalities, and his research shows that 88% of the more than 70,000 people he's worked with developed a secure attachment style in just 90 days. He got there the hard way, through a six and a half year opioid addiction that only broke when he understood he wasn't running from his outside world, he was running from his inside one. This one gets unusually personal. Thais breaks down the difference between the conscious and subconscious mind, why willpower alone never sticks, and the exact rewiring exercise he uses, then Larry opens up about childhood bullying and body-image fear he says he's never shared in 1,500 episodes. If you've ever set a goal your behavior refused to follow, this conversation explains why and what to do about it.   Timeline Summary [1:44] – Growing up in a tumultuous household and one of Canada's longest divorce cases [2:46] – A knee surgery, painkillers, and the start of a six and a half year spiral [4:00] – The idea that changed everything: you're numbing your internal reality, not your external one [5:52] – Why sobriety finally stuck the third time around [6:20] – The sentence in a psych class that began his recovery [8:04] – Finding God, meditation, and building a real support system [11:33] – The full bio: 75 million people reached and an 88% success rate in 90 days [13:09] – The actual difference between the conscious and subconscious mind [14:14] – The Freudian iceberg and where your conditioning is stored [16:03] – Why there's no such thing as self-sabotage [19:18] – The Monday drinker: a case study in wanting to quit but not quitting [20:36] – The three pillars of why we keep choosing what we say we don't want [24:05] – Upgrading the form: how Thais turned his own anger into vulnerability [28:55] – The red converse shoes and how we wire by emotional association [29:42] – The cost benefit rewiring exercise, step by step [32:37] – What's actually happening in the brain when you reflect, write, and repeat [36:09] – Larry shares being a bullied, overweight kid and the dance that changed him [41:05] – Why body image got wired to so much pain, and what it's really about [48:34] – The three step exercise for rewiring a core wound [50:37] – Building confidence rooted in character instead of appearance [57:04] – The four attachment styles explained [1:00:14] – The fearful avoidant style and the unworthiness wound [1:04:17] – Why your attachment shows up most where you were most wounded   5 Key Takeaways Willpower Can't Beat Your Programming — Your conscious mind can't outwill your subconscious. When you keep repeating a pattern you swore you'd quit, that isn't weakness, it's your subconscious running a different program than the one you set. There's No Such Thing as Self-Sabotage — What feels like sabotage is your conscious intention and your subconscious conditioning pulling in opposite directions. Nobody wakes up planning to wreck their day. Upgrade the Form, Don't Just Kill the Habit — Every habit meets a real need. Instead of white-knuckling it away, identify what the behavior gives you and build a healthier way to get that same need met. Rewire Through Repetition, Emotion, and Imagery — The subconscious speaks in images and feelings, not logic. Recording your costs and benefits and listening back daily for 21 days builds new neural pathways while the old ones atrophy. Root Your Worth in Character, Not Appearance — Confidence based on your body or achievements can be taken away by an injury or a setback. Confidence built on evidence of who you are at your core can't be infringed.   Links & Resources Episode page and all links: https://thedadedge.com/1511 Join the Dad Edge Alliance: https://thedadedge.com/join Dad Edge Boardroom Goal Setting Intensive (July 31, 8am central): https://thedadedge.com/goals The Personal Development School: https://personaldevelopmentschool.com Thais Gibson on YouTube: Thais Gibson Personal Development School The Personal Development School on Instagram: https://instagram.com/thepersonaldevelopmentschool The Pursuit of Legendary Fatherhood by Larry Hagner: referenced in episode   Enjoyed This Episode? Day 112 is all about accountability and making things right. Today, I'm tackling a major mistake in Betty's power system. While the current setup has served us well, I realized it was under-designed for the specific demands of our air conditioning unit—something I should have caught during the initial planning phase. In this video, I'm cleaning up the "rat's nest" of wiring and installing a new control panel and smart pad. This upgrade not only streamlines our power management but also gives us Bluetooth control over the entire system. I'll walk you through the process of drilling pilot holes, checking wiring sizes, and interpreting the manual to ensure everything is grounded and fused correctly. It's a hot day to be buried in the garage, but getting this system properly organized and efficient is a huge step toward making van life more sustainable for our family. In this video:Identifying why the original power system design was a "mistake"Unboxing and preparing the new control panelManaging complex 12V vs. 120V wiring and ground connectionsCleaning up the electrical "rat's nest" for a safer buildPlanning for future thermal management with heat sinks and fansThanks for following along with the build! Kerre Woodham: Upgrading our water infrastructure is long overdue

Kerre McIvor Mornings Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 28, 2026 4:53 Transcription Available

The first national picture of our water networks has revealed severe and immense pressures, with an average of 31 wastewater overflows across New Zealand every single day given as an example of how it's failing. In total, about 15% of our pipes are in poor or very poor condition – and that's likely to be understating it, given that the pipes are under the ground and we only know there's a problem when there's a problem, like a sinkhole – good morning St Marys Bay, hello Wellington. Or when there's a major sewage overflow – good morning again Wellington, and looking at you, Queenstown Lakes and Herne Bay. To be fair, a lot of the wastewater overflows are on us. Absolute morons cause blockages when they put things down the loo or the sink that shouldn't go down there. No, you don't pour your fat down there, because what happens when fat sets? Blocks everything up, doesn't it? Wet wipes, honestly, and the like. Will the Government's take on Labour's Three Waters, Local Water Done Well, fix the problem? Well, even the proponent of Local Water Done Well, Local Government Minister Simeon Brown says it's going to be “a mammoth challenge”. That's like a doctor saying there'll be quite a bit of discomfort – what they mean is severe agony. When they say a mammoth challenge, that's like, we're not entirely sure we can do it, but we have to give it a bash. One of the key points, he says, the Government wanted to achieve with Local Water Done Well is making sure the entities that deliver these water services are, in essence, match fit, are financially sustainable, and have the ability to deliver, not just now, but in the years, the decades to come. There are significant challenges around infrastructure investment deficit, and we'll need to spend, on average and all things considered, around $4 billion per year over the next 10 years. Now, some have already got cracking and underway, and that was in part one of the reasons that Labour's version of Local Water Done Well, the Three Waters, received a bit of pushback. The first was that local mayors said that the Government shouldn't get their mitts on local assets. The second was that some councils had already spent a great deal of money doing the hard stuff, not just building pretty things that look great above ground, but had invested considerably in their water structures. Auckland has a very efficient, reasonably well-run department of water, if you will, Watercare, and they didn't want to hand that over to anybody in particular. And then, of course, there was the co-governance, which was very poorly sold. And even now, when we're joining into big entities so that there's more clout when it comes to borrowing and sharing and pooling of resources, Auckland's like, “well, if you haven't spent a cent, Northland, on your water, why on earth should we carry you?” And other councils are feeling much the same way. But anyone who's living near Moa Point in Wellington right now would say spend whatever it takes to get the pipes fixed. Ask anyone in Havelock North who was affected by the campylobacter outbreak there this time 10 years ago. Almost 40% of the town struck by gastro when sheep dung contaminated the town's water supply. There were four deaths, 953 notified cases. Upgrading our water system is not a “gosh, that'd be nice one day”. Upgrading our water was gosh, it would be nice one day 20 years ago. It is so overdue. The money must be spent now, and it's infrastructure that must be prioritised now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, host Doug brings together an eclectic group of practitioners, coaches, and intuitive minds from across the globe to explore the boundaries of consciousness. From the East Coast of the US to the Sunshine Coast of Australia, the group dives deep into the realities of modern meditation. Have you ever reached midlife and wondered why the habits that kept you feeling strong for years suddenly do not seem to be working anymore? You are tracking your food, exercising harder, pushing through exhaustion, and doing everything you were told to do, yet your sleep, energy, metabolism, stress tolerance, and body all feel different. In this solo episode, I am introducing The WellDrop Method, the five-part framework I created after realizing that midlife requires a different wellness strategy. We talk about what to track beyond the number on the scale, how to work with your cycle instead of pushing through every day the same way, which daily habits and home exposures may be affecting how you feel, and why hormones and peptides make more sense when a strong foundation is already in place. This is the roadmap I wish someone had handed me before my body started playing by a completely different set of rules.  What's Discussed(00:00) Why the wellness habits that worked before midlife may stop giving you the same results(03:12) Framework 1: Tracking the data that matters beyond calories and the scale(06:07) Framework 2: Working with your cycle to support energy, movement, and recovery(07:31) Framework 3: Upgrading the daily habits that affect sleep, cortisol, and how your body responds(09:36) Framework 4: Creating a healthier home environment without trying to change everything overnight(11:05) Framework 5: Why hormones and peptides should come after the foundation(13:14) Turning awareness into alignment, action, and ownership with a personalized midlife roadmapYou do not need to keep adding more effort to a strategy that no longer fits your body. Listen now to learn how to focus on what matters, make more informed wellness decisions, and build a plan that supports the way you want to feel through midlife and beyond.Sign up for The Well Drop NewsletterCheck out The Well Drop approved products and brands at amberberger.me/productsFind out more about Amber Berger: Website: http://thewelldrop.comInstagram: @thewelldropTHE WELL DROP

Every now and then it's worth looking back at the gear you've bought and asking yourself... was it actually worth it? That's what this episode is. No sponsorship fluff. Just my honest thoughts after putting this gear through its paces over the last 12 months.  Some of it has been worth every cent. Other bits I'm still on the fence about. From cameras and boots through to wet weather gear, rangefinders, camping gear and vacuum sealers, I break down what I paid, why I bought it, and whether I'd spend the money again. I also run through my brand new bow setup after finally pulling the trigger on the Darton TriTech. We talk through why I chose it, how it tuned, what it cost, and the first couple of hunts where it really surprised me. One moment that still sticks with me was watching a group of hinds barely react after I missed a shot through a lantana bush. They moved, stopped about 60 metres away and just stood there. It was the first real indication of just how incredibly quiet this new bow actually is.

Upgrading the Executive Operating System: Navigating "Founder Puberty" with Mark RampollaIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur Podcast, host Josh Elledge sat down with Mark Rampolla, the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Mark Rampolla Co., to dissect the profound identity shifts required to transition from a hands-on startup operator to a high-leverage enterprise CEO. Mark, the visionary founder of ZICO Coconut Water (which he successfully scaled and sold to The Coca-Cola Company) and a prominent venture capitalist at Ground Force Capital, highlights how traditional execution mechanics often break down as a company scales past critical revenue thresholds. This conversation serves as an essential strategic playbook for mid-market founders and executive teams looking to navigate internal organizational friction, deploy AI-driven behavioral analytics, and align their personal leadership development with sustainable enterprise valuation. The Strategy of Transition: Managing Growth Phases, Behavioral Intelligence, and Multi-Model Team AnalyticsScaling an enterprise past the initial startup phase requires a radical evolution in executive philosophy, moving away from reactive firefighting toward structured, systems-driven organizational governance. Mark Rampolla describes this uncomfortable growth zone as "founder puberty"—a recurring corporate lifecycle phase occurring at the $5M, $10M, and $100M revenue marks, where the tactical habits that initially drove early survival begin to bottleneck long-term enterprise value. True scale is achieved when a founder embraces the discomfort of personal transformation, delegating day-to-day tactical execution to focus exclusively on overarching corporate culture, capital allocation, and macro-level strategy. By implementing structured 90-day leadership acceleration programs, founders can systematically dismantle administrative debt, clarify cross-functional roles, and future-proof their operations against shifting industry trends.Optimizing team performance and resolving high-stakes boardroom conflicts demands that executive leadership step away from subjective intuition and embrace advanced, data-driven behavioral diagnostic tools. Many high-growth companies suffer from internal misalignment and communication silos because managers fail to recognize the diverse personality dynamics and cognitive decision-making styles within their executive tiers. Integrating automated assessment frameworks—which synthesize complex models like the Enneagram and Myers-Briggs through specialized AI engines—allows leadership to map the behavioral DNA of their entire labor infrastructure at a fraction of traditional enterprise costs. This precise analytical insight enables founders to de-escalate partnership friction in minutes, align talent with their highest and best corporate use, and cultivate an inclusive workplace culture built on absolute operational transparency.Sustaining a premium market footprint over multiple decades requires corporate leaders to decouple their personal definition of freedom from simple financial liquidity events. Many entrepreneurs operate under the false assumption that a major corporate exit will automatically resolve their operational anxiety, only to find that systemic fear and process friction persist if they neglect their internal leadership mindset. Real wealth optimization is achieved when executives integrate continuous learning loops, digital tracking systems, and community-centric knowledge initiatives into the foundational blueprint of their daily schedules. When an enterprise treats intellectual property, cross-cultural capability development, and human capital empowerment as non-negotiable pieces of corporate infrastructure, the organization builds an independent, self-sustaining asset that predictably commands authority across its entire industry vertical.About Mark RampollaMark Rampolla is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Ground Force Capital, a leading venture capital firm, and the founder of Mark Rampolla Co. As the pioneering entrepreneur who launched ZICO Coconut Water and scaled it to a global acquisition by The Coca-Cola Company, Mark is recognized as a premier authority on healthy beverage innovation and sustainable corporate growth. He is the author of Entrepreneur's Guide to Freedom and a dedicated executive advisor who specializes in helping high-growth founders navigate the complex psychological and structural shift from tactical business operator to visionary enterprise CEO.About Mark Rampolla Co.Mark Rampolla Co. is an elite executive coaching, leadership development, and corporate advisory firm designed to guide founders through rapid organizational transitions. The firm specializes in executing the Founder to CEO Sprint, an intensive 90-day development framework tailored for leaders of companies generating between $5M and $100M in revenue. Through cutting-edge behavioral assessment integrations, strategic mindset reframing, and structured governance auditing, Mark Rampolla Co. enables modern leadership teams to break through operational growth plateaus and build highly resilient, scalable business assets.Links Mentioned in This EpisodeMark Rampolla Official Website: markrampolla.coMark Rampolla on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/marksrampollaKey Episode HighlightsNavigating Founder Puberty: Identifying the hidden operational friction points that signal an executive must upgrade their leadership toolkit to support enterprise scale. The Founder to CEO Sprint: Implementing a rigorous 90-day structural framework centered on self-awareness, workflow delegation, and systems governance.AI-Powered Behavioral Analytics: Utilizing multi-model personality assessment tools to eliminate internal communication friction and optimize team performance.Redefining Executive Freedom: Dissecting why financial liquidity events fail to eliminate operational stress without a fundamental shift in leadership mindset.Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Leveraging continuous multi-modal learning architectures and supporting local library initiatives to scale corporate intellectual capital.ConclusionThe conversation with Mark Rampolla reinforces that true corporate optimization is a direct consequence of an executive's willingness to engage in deep personal and structural evolution. By standardizing internal performance metrics, removing process friction from the frontline, and ruthlessly protecting automated system governance, business leaders can transform a volatile, founder-dependent startup into a highly structured, self-sustaining corporate asset.More from The Thoughtful Entrepreneur

Are your thoughts setting a ceiling on your business's financial success? In this special session, I'm sitting down with resident mindset coach Jennifer Vollmann to unpack the psychology of money. Whether you find yourself stalling on financial tracking, overspending, or avoiding your numbers entirely, the root cause usually isn't a lack of business skill—it's your money identity. Jennifer breaks down how to identify inherited limiting beliefs, shift into a factual mindset, and take massive action to build long-term profitability. Key Takeaways Your Money Identity Runs on Autopilot: You didn't develop your view of money when you started your business. Your money identity is the sum of all the stories you've heard, witnessed, or been told since childhood by parents, culture, gender expectations, and society. The Proof Trap: When you hold a belief like "I'm bad with money," your brain actively drives behaviors (like avoiding your bank account or over-discounting) that generate chaos. Your brain then points to that chaos and says, "See? I told you so," locking you into a toxic loop. Neutralize Numbers with Facts: Money on a screen is just data. When you look at financial figures stripped of emotional stories, your brain stops panicking, allowing you to make strategic decisions. The 20% Rule: You don't need to 100% believe a massive, positive new affirmation overnight. Upgrading your mindset by just 20% with a believable, factual step (e.g., changing "I can't save" to "I saved money for that one specific thing once, so I know how to do it") is enough to start shifting your actions. Action Creates Evidence: Thought work is fun, but it stays in your head without a physical shift. True empowerment comes when you move from feeling disempowered to taking control through clear, daily actions. Quotes to Remember "An identity is just a thought you've had over and over again about yourself. You now believe it to be true, but it doesn't actually make it true." – Jennifer Vollmann "Numbers are just numbers on a screen. When we look at them as neutral data, the brain can't argue feelings, and it's a much easier place to act from." – Jennifer Vollmann "The framework doesn't change based on your personality or product. The business owners who see the results they're looking for are simply the action takers." – Ciara Stockeland Work with Me - https://www.ciarastockeland.com/work-with-meVisit the Bookstore - https://www.ciarastockeland.com/bookstoreSign Up for Free Weekly Tips and Trainings - https://www.ciarastockeland.com/subscribe More About the Episode Sponsor:Get $300 off your first month of Pie, and start attracting more high-intent customers through Google Ads and AI search. Your network is not neutral. It is either pulling you higher… Or keeping you exactly where you are. In this episode of The Level Up Podcast, Paul Alex breaks down why auditing your room is one of the fastest ways to change your financial trajectory. Let's be real… If everyone around you is complaining… Making excuses… Playing small… And tearing down success… That energy is going to get into your head. And if you stay in the wrong room long enough… You will start accepting the wrong standards. In this episode, you'll learn: Why your environment directly impacts your income and ambition How the wrong circle quietly limits your growth Why being the smartest person in the room is a warning sign How to find mentors, masterminds, and peers who force you to level up The truth is simple: You cannot become elite while staying surrounded by average standards. At some point, you have to stop trying to impress the old room… And start earning your seat in a better one. Find people who intimidate you. Find people who challenge your thinking. Find people who make your current goals look small. Because when you surround yourself with giants… Your mindset changes. Your standards rise. Your execution sharpens. And your income follows. Audit your room. Upgrade your peers. Protect your energy. And step into the environment that matches your future. Your Network is your NETWORTH!
