How Confidence, Culture & Self-Worth Shape Success with Big Asian Energy's John Wang

Delanie Fischer chats with John Wang, author of Big Asian Energy, about confidence, culture, and the power of conversation. They unpack how cultural conditioning, fear, and the desire to be "good enough” shape identity and self-worth. John shares the lessons he learned from his year-long experiment in radical honesty—during which he came clean to friends and family about past lies and committed to always speaking his mind in every interaction—and reflects on how this experience led to deeper connections and a new way of being. Discussed in this episode:  What Is Charisma, Gravitas, and Executive Presence?  Biases, Stereotypes, Discrimination, and Coded Language  Asian American Culture and the Workplace  Fear of Conflict, Confrontation, and Avoidance  The 1 Year of Radical Honesty Experiment 7 Adaptive Patterns: Achiever, Fixer, Chameleon, Charmer, Commander, Rebel, Invisible One  The Belief Behind Your Behavior and The Fear (and Illusion) of Death  Rejection as Redirection to Alignment + Finding Community and Belonging  The Achievement Monster & How To Get off the Treadmill  Internal vs. External Validation & When Affirmations Don't Work (Try This) Self-Worth and Creating Your Own Metric for Success  High-Context vs. Low-Context Conversation  Self-Diminishment vs. Respecting Cultural Norms  The 6 Levels of Mitigating Language (Great for Baby Steps!) Hidden Hazards: Unmasking Earth's Threat from Invisible Asteroids

In this episode of SpaceTime, we delve into the intriguing world of near-Earth asteroids, the evolution of our universe, and the remarkable discovery of a rogue planet experiencing unprecedented growth.Invisible Asteroids Near Venus: A Hidden ThreatRecent computer simulations published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics have raised alarms about a population of near-Earth asteroids that remain undetectable due to their proximity to Venus. These Venusian co-orbital asteroids, which share an orbital resonance with Venus, could pose a collision risk to Earth within a few thousand years. The study's lead author, Valerio Carumba, explains the challenges of observing these asteroids, as they are obscured by the Sun's glare. With a size of around 300 metres, these asteroids could create impact craters several kilometres wide, highlighting the need for dedicated space missions to monitor this potential threat. The Universe's Evolution: New Insights from the Epoch of ReionizationAstronomers have made significant strides in understanding the universe's early days, revealing that it was warmer than previously thought before the first stars ignited. Research based on observations from the Murchison Wide Field Array in Western Australia indicates that the gas between galaxies was heated around 800 million years after the Big Bang, contradicting earlier theories of a cold universe. This heating, likely driven by early X-ray sources, set the stage for the epoch of reionization, which transformed the cosmos from opaque to transparent, allowing light to travel freely.A Richie Planet's Remarkable Growth SpurtIn a groundbreaking discovery, astronomers have identified a rogue planet, catalogued as char 11 oh 7 minus 7626, that is not bound to any star and is growing at an astonishing rate of 6 billion tonnes of gas and dust per second. Located approximately 600 light years away in the constellation Chameleon, this planet challenges conventional notions of planetary stability. Observations reveal that its accretion rate fluctuates dramatically, highlighting the dynamic processes at play in the formation of rogue planets and blurring the lines between planets and stars.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesAstronomy and Astrophysicshttps://www.aanda.org/Astrophysical Journal Lettershttps://iopscience.iop.org/journal/2041-8205Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-your-guide-to-space-astronomy--2458531/support.Invisible Asteroids Near Venus: A Hidden ThreatThe Universe's Evolution: New Insights from the Epoch of ReionizationA Richie Planet's Remarkable Growth Spurt(00:00) The threat posed by invisible asteroids near Venus(10:30) New findings on the universe's warm early phase(19:00) Discovery of a rogue planet growing at record rates(27:15) Science Robert: 2025 Nobel Prize announcements

"Wait For Fire Burning" Formed in Oakland in 1985, Legal Reins were comprised of singer/guitarist Danny Benatar, bassist Eden Unger and drummer Tim Freund. They tore up the Bay Area scene, playing show after show and cementing themselves as one of the best live bands around. This is a band who did the work, got in the reps and eclipsed the Gladwellian idea of 10,000 hours. Opening for everyone from Madness to Killing Joke, Legal Reins proved themselves time and again that they could step on any stage and match anyone in terms of power and heart. Their exhilarating blend of sweeping pop epics and punchy hook laden rock and roll brought to mind everyone from The Sound to Echo and the Bunnymen to the Waterboys. After a bit of a bidding war, they signed to Arista in 1987, put out their debut album Please, The Pleasure soon after and then? Well, then things turned the other way. I'm going to let Tim tell you the story, but let me say this: In 1986 I was the music director of KVHS, an all-metal station located conveniently on my high school campus. I was in the habit of sneaking in The Smiths and The Chameleons in between Accept and Venom just to see if anyone noticed--they did, by the way. It was slightly terrifying to be 16 and getting death threats for not playing King Diamond, but I digress. Legal Reins called me up and they were very kind and I loved their music and one time I played them in between Y&T and Armored Saint and this one guy called up and said, very aggressively, Who was that you played after Y&T? I told him Legal Reins and he was quiet for second and then he said, That was pretty good... In this conversation, he and Graham dig into the band's British post-punk DNA (The Damned, Joy Division, Chameleons, The Smiths), why the songs are dark but the people aren't, and how a DIY writing process becomes a full-band wildfire. They get honest about passion vs paycheque bands, why live shows deliver a feeling screens can't, and the eternal tussle between algorithm-chasing and making work from the heart. Valentino shares how Burn Kit craft energetic, person-to-person gigs that “wake people back up,” and what's next: touring now, then heads-down on their first full-length album. In this episode:The origin of the name Burn Kit (and the almost-band names that didn't make it)British influences shaping an American soundValentino's demo-to-band songwriting flow — and how each member elevates the trackSerious music, healthy humour: avoiding the “untouchable prince of darkness” actWhy some bands keep going without passion (and why Burn Kit won't)Community > virality: the live connection you can't streamAuthenticity in a saturated scene — and how to “educate the algorithm”What's next: the debut LP and how listeners can genuinely supportSupport the artist: Find Burn Kit on Bandcamp and say hello on their socials — every play, purchase, and share helps independent music thrive. If you enjoyed this chat, follow My Music, leave a quick rating/review, and pass the episode on to a friend who loves their guitars loud and their art honest.

Bible Reading: John 15:12-13"Have you ever heard people use colors to describe their feelings?" Miss Iverson asked her class. Carter waved his hand to make sure she saw it. "Like green with envy?" "How about purple with rage?" Mei said. "Or blue--like when they're sad.""All good examples," Miss Iverson said. "Now, people don't actually change color, but some animals do. A chameleon, for example, can quickly change its skin color in response to light, temperature, or other things in its environment. Other animals change color to blend in with their surroundings. They do that to defend themselves against enemies." That evening, Carter told his dad about his day. "People use different colors to describe how they feel, but some animals really do change their color. Isn't that cool?" "Sure is," said Dad. "Sounds like you had a good day.""Pretty good," replied Carter, but then he frowned. "Hari and I always play together at recess time, but today he acted like he didn't even know me! He was playing basketball with a bunch of guys when I came up, and he didn't invite me to play with them or even speak to me. I think he wanted them to think he was cool." Carter paused. "Hari was a chameleon friend today!""That's a good way to describe people who change their behavior toward others depending on the situation," said Dad. "But I don't think Hari is the only one who does that. Have you ever done something like that, Carter?""Well…maybe." Carter thought of how he treated his little sister differently when his friends came over. "Yeah. I'm not always nice to Layla in front of my friends because I want her to leave us alone.""Do you remember the verse you learned at church last week?" Dad asked.Carter nodded. "Proverbs 17:17. It says friends should love each other at all times. That kind of friend wouldn't be like a chameleon.""No," said Dad. "That verse describes the kind of friend Jesus is. He shows His love for us all the time, and He wants us to do the same. Trust Him to help you be consistent, loving friend--even when others aren't.""Okay." Carter sighed. "I'll remember that when I see Hari tomorrow." –Donna HuisjenHow About You?Have you ever had a chameleon friend? Have you been one yourself? It hurts when a friend changes the way they treat you based on where they are or who they're with. The Bible says a true friend loves at all times. That's how Jesus loves us, and He wants us to love others the same way. Be a consistent friend and treat others in the same loving way all the time.Today's Key Verse:A friend loves at all times.
