2021, a year so many of us have been hoping will turn a global page for the better, has got off to a rocky start. There is so much we can’t control at the moment, so in this show we’re going to concentrate on what we can do - that is, take the reins of our own careers, albeit from behind our computers. My guest is Lisa Unwin, co-founder of London-based Reignite Academy and author of She’s Back. I wanted to talk to Lisa because she’s now optimistic about the future, when a few months ago she felt quite differently. Among other things we discuss the underrated business phone call, how men and women have used social media differently during lockdown (which may be hurting women’s careers), and what happens when women don’t charge for their work. In the latest EG Property Podcast, focused on talent, EG editor Samantha McClary talks with Lisa Unwin and Deb Khan, two women who have made a career of promoting and empowering other women. This discussion wide-ranging discussion looks at why women are more likely to leave their professions, why that is happening more now, what that lack of talent means for an industry and how we make sure it comes back. It also investigates the value of older, more experienced people in your business, taking a career break when you are still reasonably new to your career and why more women need to talk about their business acumen and they add real value (aka income) to business. This episode is the second in a new series focused on talent in the real estate sector. If you have a story of your own journey back into the workforce to share or a burning topic you’d like to hear discussed, e-mail samantha.mcclary@egi.co.uk
Lisa is a really interesting woman and has had a varied career as have many of our guests but what stands out about Lisa is that whilst taking a career break to raise her children she realised that finding her way back to her once loved career had become much more difficult than she had first thought it would be. Then she realised something else - she wasn't alone! And instead of sitting back and letting this happen, she took action and then co-wrote a book to show the rest of us how to take action too. We have both been reading this book and wished we had discovered it sooner, it has some many helpful tips and inspiring stories in it. Give this episode a listen to find out how Lisa came to be doing this and what she is up to these days. As ever, we would love to know what you think. Oh, and buy the book here - you won't regret it. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CJTYRX3/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Women often choose to take career breaks to take care of their children or other relatives, such as ageing parents. Some men are gradually joining them, too. And, sadly, what they quickly find out is that it’s really difficult to get reintroduced to the workplace after taking a break. Lisa Unwin discovered that there’s a huge untapped potential in this talent pool. This triggered her to carry out research in collaboration with the Edinburgh Business School, to establish a consultancy called “She’s Back” and to co-author a book under the same title. Lisa’s book aims to help hundreds of thousands of professional women (and men) who have taken an extended career break, then realise that they have 20 (or more) years of professional life ahead of them and have no idea how to get back onto the right career track.
Many women will take time out of the workforce at some point in their careers. But getting back in can be notoriously hard. In this show we meet Lisa Unwin, co-author of the book 'She's Back'. We discuss how to change your attitude to persuade an employer (and yourself) of your worth, how to frame an absence from the workforce, and why career and motherhood have a lot in common with a game of chess.
