For many years she was responsible for publishing the works of JRR Tolkien, and later worked on Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, spending months in New Zealand with cast and crew (she wrote the official visual companions to the films). The authors she publishes include George R.R. Martin, Dean Koontz, Robin Hobb, Mark Lawrence and Raymond E Feist. While she was in Morocco in 2005 to research The Tenth Gift she met her soon-to-be husband, a Berber tribesman from a village in the Anti-Atlas Mountains. Returning home, she gave up her office job in London, sold her flat and shipped the contents to Morocco and they were married later that year. They now split their time between Cornwall and Morocco, and Jane still works remotely as a Fiction Publishing Director for HarperCollins. We met Jane in Dartington Hall at the HNS Conference back in September and you can listen to that short episode (and watch the video on our Youtube channel), but when we read her CV, we knew we had to get her back for a full episode. Conversations of the Heart w/ T. Till Real Dialogue With Real People
In this episode of Conversation of the Heart my special guest Jane Johnson Wall, LMFT educated us on the depths, layers, and complications of perinatal loss and birth trauma. Jane is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) practicing virtually in California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Florida. Her practice is women-centered, with an additional niche in perinatal/maternal mental health, including perinatal loss and birth trauma. She loves helping women feel empowered and connected to their inner bad-ass as they navigate through the various phases of their lives. She wants them to feel supported as they journey through the healing process. She believes that the foundational component of a successful therapy experience is the interpersonal connection between therapist and client. Her clients would describe her as being relatable and easy-going. (*She likes to say that she lives in the “real world” too!*) That said, she will “lovingly” call people out on their $h!t! As part of her work in the field of perinatal/maternal mental health, she co-created The MotherLoad Collective, with her colleague, Kelsey Mizell. As part of their commitment to supporting mothers, they have created free resources and workshops for parents, and also host trainings for professionals who work with families. They believe that when mothers are supported, families thrive, and they are committed to expanding their offerings in this realm. This week's contestant: Jane Johnson calling from Indianapolis, IN
Have you found that full-time corporate life just doesn't work for you? Long hours, commutes, expectations that you will be available at all times when it really isn't convenient for you, stress. There can be many reasons why the rigidity of corporate jobs does not suit women. And when that happens you can feel like you have been effectively thrown on the scrapheap. You invested all that time and energy on building your career and suddenly it can feel like it counts for nothing. This is the experience of many women when they have a baby. They will try to negotiate better terms and find that they get turned down, or that despite having been told they can ‘have it all', actually, work and family aren't as compatible as they had hoped. It's a harsh experience to go through. And this needs to change. Women need to be able to build life on their own terms. In this week's podcast episode I am talking about why I am so fired up about this fight. My guest is Jane Johnson, the founder of Careering Into Motherhood. When she returned to her role as global director at a major bank she negotiated a job-share. She was the first person at her level to do so. This was successful but when she looked for the next step in her career, recruiters weren't interested in talking about flexible working. Jane went on to found a highly successful recruitment business helping women to find senior roles that offered flexible working. She was inundated with candidates and could not meet demand, so rather than turn away women who wanted to work, she started the Careering into Motherhood community in 2019. It began as a Facebook group and membership has grown to more than 8,000 women. Jane has run mentoring programmes for 60 women, online coaching programmes during lockdown, launched the award-winning Careering into Motherhood podcast, She was invited by 10 Downing Street to advise the Department For Business (BEIS) on flexible working. We talk about: Challenges women face about wanting to have a career and being around for their family How coaching is an enabler for building a life that works on our terms The importance of financial independence for women How women building businesses and negotiating better terms builds a more inclusive society Making workplaces less toxic for women Women being able to make choices that work for them Useful links Careering into Motherhood Join Careering into Motherhood's online community Get in touch with Jessica to discuss your consulting business Jessica's LinkedIn profile
Having grown up in Cornwall Jane Johnson has a deep love of the landscape of the south west. She and her husband Abdel take Clare on a coastal walk along steep rocky footpaths that offer breathtaking views of the Cornish coastline around the Lizard to Lands End. It's a favourite walk for the couple who often see dolphins, whales and basking sharks along the way. They tell Clare the story of their extraordinary meeting in the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains of Morocco and how a near death experience for Jane while climbing led to a love affair with a Berber restaurant owner who tried to rescue her. Seventeen years on the couple live mainly in Cornwall but try to divide their time between there and Morocco. Jane is a writer and publisher while Abdel is now developing his artwork. Sarah Jane Johnson, who I've lovingly nicknamed "SJAJ" or Suh-Jawge", came by to drop stuff off after one of our amazing Table Reads for Coverfly. As we started catching up, I got the idea to sit down and record our conversation. I hope you all get to know SJAJ. She's not only one of our most skilled artists in every genre, but in just about a year and a half, she's become one of our go-to producers for our table reads, and wrote her first short film as an excuse to get herself and others in the Class Fam into SAG-AFTRA, which is now being directed by our very own Jim Morrison, who is one of the most highly-decorated directors from Canada. We talk about being introverted, having to live with the risks inherent in life, and the long game that so often is the road to success in this business, plus so much more. She's loud. She's sassy. She's got a heart of gold, and is always there when you need her. Listen in and I hope you'll start to understand why I adore her and believe in her so much. Why do so many of us go careering into motherhood, unaware of just how hard it is to have a meaningful career as well as family commitments? And why don’t men struggle with their careers in the same way? We talk about the rise of flexible jobs and work anywhere policies, executive burnout and the pressure to be “always on,” Government claims that 75% of mothers are in work, and yet there's being in work and there's having a career. If you’ve had a career break, been on maternity leave, want a career change, want to relaunch yourself back into work or just want a happier balance between work and everything else, Careering Into Motherhood is here with practical advice, insightful interviews and real human stories. Jane Johnson is a speaker and flexible working advocate. She negotiated her own senior role as a job-share, and in 2019 she set up the Careering Into Motherhood Facebook Group to promote discussion around flexible working, the group now has nearly 7,000 members and a successful women’s mentoring programme.

Have you ever approached time with God wondering if you're doing it ‘right'? Somehow it's just turned into something on your to-do list, like mowing the lawn, and you're wondering if there is more to be revealed? Or maybe you've wondered why some prayers aren't answered, and don't know how to turn to the Bible for resolve and peace. It can be daunting to look at the 66 books of the Bible, words written thousands of years ago, and wonder where and how to start. And finding God in the midst of trauma and unanswered prayers can cause even the most well-versed Christian to re-examine their faith. Friend, if this is you, you're not alone. Join Mary as she invites author, graphic designer, children's photographer, and miracle mom, Jane Johnson, to take us on her journey of how establishing a habit of fruitful quiet time has enriched her relationship with God and helped her conquer some of life's major hurdles. Listen in as Jane courageously gives us a peek into some of the darkest moments in her life, how her quiet time with God played a huge role in keeping her “beside still waters,” practical tips on how to begin engaging with the Bible, and how to make the most of a simple 15 minutes with the Word of God. Quiet time doesn't have to be just another daily task. It can grow into a daily moment of expectation to discover something new about the God we love and serve. Here's your gentle invitation to rediscover a love for and dependency on the Living Word of God like never before. He has something waiting specifically for YOU. The Gist of Freedom Preserving American History through Black Literature . . .
Arriving by train from Washington D.C. on July 18, 1855 was slaver Col. John H. Wheeler of North Carolina; and a black enslaved woman Jane Johnson; and her two sons, Daniel and Isaiah. Wheeler was the American minister to Nicaragua, and his party was passing through, on their way to New York. Wheeler left Jane and her sons locked in a hotel room, giving specific instructions not to talk to any of the black hotel staff. Jane, however, did just that, informing a black worker that she was a slave who wanted to be free. The hotel worker drafted a note to William Still, the African American head of the Vigilance Committee of the local Underground Railroad, and sent it off to Still at the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society office at 153 N. 5th St.(C). Still alerted his white colleague, Passmore Williamson, at his office on 7th and Arch (point D), and they raced off to the hotel. They arrived as the 5 o'clock ferry was about to depart and approached the Wheeler party accompanied by five black dockworkers -- John Ballard, James P. Braddock, William Curtis, James Martin and Isaac Moore -- who quickly perceived the situation. Still told Jane that under Pennsylvania law she was a free woman and could leave Wheeler here and now if she wished.
