Patrick McCutcheon has been the Managing Director of IP Europe since July 2022. He previously worked for 17 years at the European Commission as a policy advisor, later senior expert on IP and competition law, in the European Commission's Research and Innovation. In these positions, he worked on a review of policies impacting incentives to invest in R&D and engage in open innovation including participation in standards and licensing of technology. He managed together with the Commission's JRC a project monitoring and analyzing industrial R&D investments which included the annual EU industrial R&D scoreboard. He was part of an intra-departmental team developing a policy framework on the licensing of SEPs and commissioned studies and expert groups on fostering patent aggregation and the impact of mergers on innovation in Pharma. His background is in business administration, he holds an MBA from Edinburgh Business School, and law he holds an LLB and LLM from the University of London with a specialization in IP and competition law.Patrick explains in the podcast that IP Europe brings together innovative European organizations that recognize the value of intellectual property in driving growth and job creation. Its mission is to promote policies that support a collaborative European innovation ecosystem to ensure that all innovators can receive a fair return on their investments in developing new solutions, thereby encouraging further research and development.In the podcast interview, Patrick explains that the question of essentiality was in most SEP licensing discussions, not the main issue. Most of the debate is about price and the value the technology adds to the end product. Claim charting each and every of the 70,000 declared patent families would add unreasonable costs to the licensing program. Even if AI tools help with that the question remains: How much do we know about the value of patented technology? Patrick further explains that a claim chart is also only one opinion at one particular point in time about a certain implementation of the standard. Patrick says it's still not clear if more claim charts and increased transparency about essentiality would after all facilitate licensing. Patents are probabilistic regarding if they are valid, essential, and of value. Patrick also states that people should not forget that in most cases agreement is reached. This is because there is an agreement in the industry about what a reasonable price is. Currently, about 90% of the SEP licensing revenue is about cellular technology. But of course, SEPs are also relevant to other standards e.g. Wi-Fi or video codec. In general, Patrick also feels that litigation for most of these technologies and SEPs has not really been increasing. The challenge now is licensing technologies in new verticals like IoT but even here comparable licenses in other industries can be used as a benchmark to start negotiations.

The FinTech Scotland Research and Innovation Roadmap highlighted the growing focus on climate considerations for the financial services sector. Whilst this is in part driven by consumers, demanding better transparency for the products they invest in, this is the launch of new regulations that is accelerating the move to a more sustainable financial sector. Financial services providers are facing growing challenges around ESG reporting due to the difficulties around the availability of trustworthy data. This has led to mounting concerns around greenwashing. In a bid to clamp down on greenwashing, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is proposing a package of new measures including investment product sustainability labels and restrictions on how terms like ‘ESG', ‘green' or ‘sustainable' can be used. Below is a summary of the Interview Tech & Your Small Business with Banke Alawaye She recounted her growing up days in Surulere, a suburb in Lagos state saying that it had been fun being that it had been easy moving around at the time as compared to now where the city had become congested. She recalled that she had developed an interest in computers at a very young age even as she had always wondered how they worked. According to her, she had started learning to compute when it had just been the Ms-DOS operating system at the time before the advent of the Windows Operating System where it was just the black and white screen. At the time, she had a big brother who worked with computers and she had always been fascinated by what he did as she always wanted to know what it was about. Sequel to studying Computer Science, she recalled that her first job as a programmer was at a direct marketing firm where she often sat down with the more experienced programmers so as to learn from them. Often times she took to dissecting the codes they had written only so that she could recreate them. On the question of a good product or good service, she chuckled saying that a business needed both as if one could not keep their customers happy without having a great product. She remarked that often times small businesses tend to get excited about their product still it falls on the needs of the market at the time. She further remarked saying that if one’s product is not solving a problem and people don’t find value in it, then it is not a valuable product. Stressing on this, she maintained that no matter how good customer service is, if the product was not solving a problem, the customers would likely not trade with the business again. Speaking about small businesses keeping up with technology, she advised that they keep it simple even as they use Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp, they are said to be keeping up with what people are using that way keeping up with one’s target market. She however advised against taking more than can be handled as in the case of someone who could only attend to 30 people a day such persons need not be on all social media platforms but should take care to understand the kind of people that their product could appeal to and where they could be found mostly. She advised small businesses to not be averse to the use of technology as it could be as simple as using a calendar, or the Whatsapp messaging platform and it was just about being deliberate.
Women often choose to take career breaks to take care of their children or other relatives, such as ageing parents. Some men are gradually joining them, too. And, sadly, what they quickly find out is that it’s really difficult to get reintroduced to the workplace after taking a break. Lisa Unwin discovered that there’s a huge untapped potential in this talent pool. This triggered her to carry out research in collaboration with the Edinburgh Business School, to establish a consultancy called “She’s Back” and to co-author a book under the same title. Lisa’s book aims to help hundreds of thousands of professional women (and men) who have taken an extended career break, then realise that they have 20 (or more) years of professional life ahead of them and have no idea how to get back onto the right career track.

India's women workers have joined the global #MeToo movement, but there are signs it may be backfiring, with some company bosses afraid to hire women, for fear of sexual harassment claims. And that could be one of the reasons why the number of women participating in the workforce in India has fallen from 36% to 24% over the last ten years. Rahul Tandon reports from Kalkota. Deepa Narayan, author of Chup - the Hindi word for quiet - shares insights gained by her team, after speaking to 600 women about their experiences of sexism at work and in wider Indian society.
