I saw a notification from our family’s tracking app—my oldest son’s phone was out of battery as of 3 a.m., and I knew what that meant. I could picture my sleep-deprived college student in his apartment, lying across his bed, fully clothed, with all the lights on. He had fallen asleep without meaning to, which meant his phone wasn’t charging and his alarm wouldn’t wake him in time for class. My brain went into panic mode.” Uh oh. On October 25th of 2010, the day before her 34th birthday, Marissa Henley, a mother with children of 6,4 and 18 months, received her biopsy results. The doctor told her that she had a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as angiosarcoma.
When Marissa Henley learned on the day before she turned 34 that she had a rare form of a deadly, aggressive cancer, her first thoughts were of her young children. Would she live long enough to take her youngest to kindergarten. Her diagnosis sent her on a journey to find the best treatment which meant long separations from her family. In her book, Loving Your Friend Through Cancer, Marissa weaves her story in the context of how to walk with a friend through the battle of her life. Marissa equips us to not only know how to respond practically but how to better understand the questions and fears of a cancer fighter. Meet Marissa, a mom and writer, who was diagnosed with angiosarcoma, a type of breast cancer. Understandably, she experienced an incredible amount of shock and fear after diagnosis. Would treatment work? Would her family have to learn to live without her? In the midst of the uncertainty, Marissa went to Houston for treatments, surgery, and clinical trials while her family stayed at home. Now that Marissa is in remission, she chooses to continue to trust in God’s character and his faithfulness. It has not been an easy journey, but Marissa chooses to be brave by encouraging others with her story through her writing.
