Episode 456 is the eleventh installment in the Hundred Year Pivot podcast series. In it, Demetri Kofinas and Grant Williams speak with the editor-in-chief of Americas Quarterly, Brian Winter. He's an expert on Latin America, having lived and worked in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, and possesses a deep understanding of the region's politics, economics, and security dynamics. The three of them begin their conversation discussing the Trump administration's almost cinematic removal of Nicolás Maduro from power in Venezuela. They speculate about who is currently in charge of the country, the implications of Maduro's exit for Venezuela's economy and the region's geopolitics, the rising tide of right-wing political movements across Latin America, and how this operation fits into the Trump administration's broader initiatives as they have been conveyed in the new National Security Strategy. They also explore the rising tide of right-wing political movements across Latin America, the role of organized crime in driving political change, how demographic shifts and artificial intelligence might reshape the region's future, and the unique role that Trump's National security adviser and secretary of state Marco Rubio has played in shaping US foreign policy in Latin America and whether Cuba and its communist government is next on the administration's list of seemingly every-expanding targets. Dr. Alyssa Olenick is one of the fastest-rising educators and coaches in the evidence-based fitness space. Known for her clarity, skepticism, and ability to translate complex physiology into practical coaching decisions, Alyssa returns to the show to tackle one of the most misunderstood topics in modern fitness. In this episode, Alyssa joins Andrew Coates to unpack what she actually means when she says “most women would be better off if they trained more like men”—and why so much women-specific training advice is built on shaky assumptions, incentives, and half-understood biology.Rather than arguing for a one-size-fits-all approach, Alyssa makes a strong case for prioritizing training experience, individual capacity, and fundamentals over sex-based fear-mongering and hormonal hype.IN THIS EPISODE, ALYSSA SHARES INSIGHT ON:What she really means by “women should train more like men”The difference between women-based training evidence vs. women-based hypothesesWhy many popular influencers sell certainty without sufficient evidenceThe incentives behind unproven or disproven training narrativesWhy differences between individuals often matter more than sex differencesWhether women (or anyone) should fear cortisol spikes from intense trainingWhy stress is not inherently bad and how context mattersHow stress management actually fits into training and lifeWhy elevated heart rate during lifting is not cardioWhy strength training cannot replace cardiovascular trainingHow menstrual cycle considerations are often oversimplifiedAnd much moreInstagram: @doclyssfitnessCHAPTERS00:50 Debunking Fitness Myths: Training Like a Man01:14 The Importance of Structured Strength Training02:24 The Role of Intensity in Training03:28 Nutrition Tracking and the MacrosFirst App04:32 Programming for Women vs Men06:01 Understanding Stress and Hormones in Training12:26 Debunking Hormonal Hypotheses20:25 Fitness Status vs Sex Differences26:15 Hormonal Effects on Women's Training27:18 Menstrual Cycle and Training Adaptations29:16 Perception vs Physiological Impact32:13 Individual Variability in Menstrual Cycles34:03 Cardiovascular Responses and Training Adjustments38:24 Lifting vs Cardio: Clearing the Confusion46:35 The Importance of Cardiovascular Fitness52:00 Final Thoughts and TakeawaysSUPPORT THE SHOWIf this episode challenged your thinking, you can support the show by:Subscribing and checking out more episodesSharing it on social media (tag me — I will respond)Sending it to a coach or client confused by hormone-based fitness adviceFOLLOW ANDREW COATESInstagram: @andrewcoatesfitnesshttps://www.andrewcoatesfitness.comPARTNERS AND RESOURCESRP Strength App (use code COATESRP)https://www.rpstrength.com/coatesJust Bite Me Meals (use code ANDREWCOATESFITNESS for 10 percent off)https://justbitememeals.com/MacrosFirst – FREE Premium TrialDownload MacrosFirstDuring setup, answer: How did you hear about us?Type: ANDREWKNKG Bags (15 percent off)https://www.knkg.com/Andrew59676Versa Gripps (discount link)https://www.versagripps.com/andrewcoatesTRAINHEROIC – FREE 90 Day Trial (2 steps)Go to: https://www.trainheroic.com/liftfreeReply to the email you receive (or email trials@trainheroic.com) and let them know Andrew sent you

Why a Biblical Worldview Matters for Every ChristianShow: Anchored in the Word — a segment of the Servants of Grace PodcastHost: Dave JenkinsSeries: Anchored for a New YearEpisode Theme: Why a Biblical Worldview MattersShow SummaryAs we begin a new year, every Christian needs to think carefully about how they see the world. In this episode of Anchored in the Word, Dave Jenkins answers a crucial question: Why is it essential for Christians to have a biblical worldview? A biblical worldview is not optional; it is the lens through which we interpret reality, make decisions, and live faithfully before the Lord in a confused and hostile culture.Listen / WatchListen:Watch:Key ScripturesRomans 12:1–2 — Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.Psalm 119:105 — God's Word as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.John 17:17 — “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”Matthew 28:18–20 — The Great Commission and our mission in the world.Episode HighlightsA biblical worldview anchors our thinking. Every person interprets life through a lens; Scripture must be that lens for the Christian, rooted in the storyline of creation, fall, redemption, and consummation.A biblical worldview helps us navigate culture. In a world saturated with secularism, relativism, and humanism, God's Word enables us to discern truth from error and stand firm.A biblical worldview shapes our morality and ethics. Right and wrong are not defined by our feelings, preferences, or cultural trends, but by God's unchanging character and revealed Word.A biblical worldview fuels our mission and witness. Seeing the world as God sees it moves us to love our neighbors, speak the truth in love, and make disciples of all nations.Full Episode NotesDave explains that every one of us lives with a worldview, whether we realize it or not. Our worldviewis the interpretive grid through which we understand God, ourselves, other people, and the world around us.For the Christian, a biblical worldview means that Scripture is our final authority for faith and life.It is grounded in the grand story of the Bible: creation, fall, redemption, and consummation.Creation tells us that God made the world, and that He made humanity in His image with dignity, purpose, and responsibility. The fall explains why our world is marked by sin, brokenness, confusion, and rebellionagainst God. Redemption shows us the center of history in the person and work of Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose again to save sinners. Consummation reminds us that Christ will return, judge the living and the dead, and make all things new.Because this story is true, it must shape how Christians think about everything: personal life, home life, work life, public life, morality, sexuality, justice, relationships, politics, and more. Dave shows how passages likeRomans 12:2 call believers not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewal of their minds, so that they may discern what is good, acceptable, and perfect according to God's will.A biblical worldview also equips us to navigate a culture that is increasingly hostile to God's design. Competing worldviews secularism, relativism, humanism, and others tell us that truth is flexible, identity is self-created, and morality is negotiable. Scripture, by contrast, gives an unchanging standard. God defines what it means to be human, what marriage is, what sexuality is for, and what holiness looks like.Dave emphasizes that Christians must be clear and courageous about these truths, especially in areas likemarriage and sexuality, where God's Word is often rejected or redefined. To dismiss or rewrite what the Bible saysabout these matters is ultimately to tamper with God's authority and to reveal a worldview that is no longeranchored in Scripture.Yet a biblical worldview is not merely about winning arguments; it is about loving God and loving neighbor. When we see the world through the lens of Scripture, we see people as God sees them: image-bearers in need of the gospel. Christ came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10), and He sends His people into the world to make disciples, teaching them to obey all that He has commanded (Matthew 28:18–20).Because of this, our worldview fuels our mission. What we believe about the Bible will shape how we treat our families, our church members, our coworkers, our neighbors, and even those who oppose us. A biblical worldview calls us to clarity about truth and compassion toward people, holding both conviction and kindness together.Dave closes by urging listeners to cultivate a biblical worldview through daily engagement with God's Word. As this new year begins, Christians should commit themselves to reading, studying, meditating on, and obeying the Bible. When we consistently seek the Lord in Scripture and prayer, God renews our minds, shapes our desires, and conforms us more and more to the image of Christ.Takeaways & Reflection QuestionsHow would you currently describe your worldview? In what ways is it shaped by Scripture, and in what ways is it shaped by the culture?Where do you feel most pressured to conform to the world's thinking rather than to God's Word? What steps can you take this year to renew your mind daily in Scripture (Bible reading plan, Scripture memory, family worship, etc.)?How does a biblical worldview change the way you view your neighbors, coworkers, and community as a mission field?Call to ActionIf this episode encouraged you, please consider:Subscribing to the Servants of Grace Podcast Network wherever you listen.Sharing this episode with a friend, pastor, or small group who wants to think more biblically about the Christian life.Visit Anchored in the Word's page at Servants of Grace or at our YouTube.Stay anchored in the Word of God.

I If you're feeling exhausted you aren't alone. The time we're living in is weird and distressing. And if you, like me, are feeling the weight of the world right now, please understand you're not it makes sense. However time keeps marching on whether we're ready for it or not, and those who seek to destroy everything we hold dear, are counting on our exhaustion. So go into this new year with grit and determination because it's going to be hard. Curiosity and imagination, because we have to create something new. And finally, allow yourself to let go of what was, in order to make room for what could be. I know there's a world better than this, but we have to believe in it to build it. Kevin Carr is an author, educator, and co-owner of multiple fitness businesses and brands, including Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (MBSC) and the Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC) certification. In this episode, Kevin joins Andrew Coates to have a candid conversation about the state of the fitness industry—and why, despite unprecedented access to gyms, information, and technology, the overall return on investment for public health remains shockingly poor.Rather than blaming individuals, Kevin explores the structural, cultural, and experiential barriers that prevent people from engaging in fitness long-term, while also highlighting the renewed importance of in-person coaching, community, and practical strength training as we age.In this episode, Kevin shares insight on:• Why massive investment in fitness has produced minimal population-level health outcomes• Why only 1 in 4 Americans have a gym membership—and why half quit within six months• Common misconceptions about gyms and why many people find them intimidating• How environment and culture shape whether people stay active or drop out• The importance of community and support for long-term fitness adherence• Why aging is not just an “old person's problem”• The idea of “aging milestones” where people quietly stop sprinting, jumping, or playing• Underrated movement qualities that matter more as we age• Why in-person coaching and gym attendance are seeing a resurgence• Practical approaches to reducing injury risk through smarter training• Why experience often matters more than credentials in coaching• And much moreCHAPTERS01:16 Fitness Industry Challenges02:38 Making Fitness More Accessible05:19 Creating a Welcoming Gym Environment15:04 The Importance of Community in Fitness23:53 Parental Expectations in Youth Sports29:28 Strength and Conditioning for Career Longevity34:32 The Impact of Modern Strength and Conditioning on Athletes35:52 Athletes Advocating for Their Health and Longevity37:13 Exercise Selection and Execution40:56 Injury Prevention and the Benefits of Strength Training42:18 The Importance of Lifelong Fitness48:37 Personal Reflections on Fitness and Longevity50:39 The Value of Practical Experience in Coaching01:02:58 Upcoming Events and ResourcesSUPPORT THE SHOWIf this episode helped you, you can help me by:• Subscribing and checking out more episodes• Sharing it on social media (tag me — I'll respond)• Sending it to a friend who's trying to stay strong, active, and engaged long-termFOLLOW ANDREW COATESInstagram: @andrewcoatesfitnesshttps://www.andrewcoatesfitness.comPARTNERS AND RESOURCESRP Strength App (use code COATESRP)https://www.rpstrength.com/coatesJust Bite Me Meals (use code ANDREWCOATESFITNESS for 10% off)https://justbitememeals.com/MacrosFirst – FREE Premium TrialDownload MacrosFirst → During setup, answer “How did you hear about us?”Type: ANDREWKNKG Bags (15% off)https://www.knkg.com/Andrew59676Versa Gripps (discount link)https://www.versagripps.com/andrewcoatesTRAINHEROIC – FREE 90-Day Trial (2 steps)Go to: https://www.trainheroic.com/liftfreeReply to the email you receive (or email trials@trainheroic.com) and let them know Andrew sent you

Composer Geoff Knorr — known for his work on the Civilization series and other large-scale game soundtracks — joins us for a deep conversation about creativity, discipline, and what it really takes to build a life in music. We discuss learning to accept criticism, letting go of ideas that don't work, why good music can still be the wrong music, and why some composers grow while others stay stuck. Drawing from Geoff's experience composing for major games, teaching at the Peabody Institute, and collaborating with musicians across diverse musical traditions, the conversation explores humility, perspective, and long-term creative growth. The episode also touches on health, sustainability, and discipline — from staying physically active as a composer to recognizing that music is simply too hard to pursue unless you genuinely love it.GEOFF KNORR LINKS:Website: https://www.geoffknorr.com/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@KnorrMusicSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OFCjpSAsyIOWWzIAYb3OI?si=_eoobKhuQTSmDIWa4DYmjgApple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/geoff-knorr/411130469Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/geoff.knorrFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Geoff-Knorr-Composer/174736382555080Markus Junnikkala is a Composer from Finland.https://www.markusjunnikkala.com/Support this podcast by becoming a member:https://markusjunnikkala.com/membership/Want me to answer your question?Ask it on social media:https://www.instagram.com/markusjunnikkala/https://www.facebook.com/markusjunnikkala/https://x.com/markusjunnikkalhttps://www.reddit.com/user/markusjunnikkala/https://www.linkedin.com/in/markusjunnikkala/Subscribing, sharing, and liking helps the podcast.TIMESTAMPS:(00:00:08) Introduction(00:02:16) Growing Up, Family, and Early Influences(00:08:32) Sports, Discipline, Health & Longevity as a Composer(00:13:19) Failure, Hard Work & Lessons From Sports(00:16:37) Subjectivity, Criticism & Facing Reality in Music(00:23:14) Letting Go of Music That Doesn't Work(00:27:19) Teaching, Mediocrity & Why Some Musicians Don't Improve(00:34:15) Game Music Reality: Serving the Vision (Beyond Earth)(00:38:19) Technology, Early MIDI & Audio Foundations(00:45:33) Collaboration, Culture & Working With Musicians(00:51:35) Childhood, Encouragement & Learning to Love Music(00:56:05) Classical Foundations, Bach & Musical Identity(01:01:04) Why Music Is Too Hard If You Don't Love It(01:05:11) Video Games, Direction & Choosing a Career Path(01:16:10) Studying Composition, Recording & Wearing Both Hats(01:30:10) Composing Process: Score, DAW & Sample Libraries(01:46:00) Improvisation, Structure & Non-Western Traditions(02:02:10) Trust, Sensitivity & Recording Real Musicians(02:18:40) Sound vs Notes: Where Music Actually Lives(02:36:00) Experience, Speed & Long-Term Creative Thinking(02:57:30) What Keeps You Going (Final Reflections)
In Episode 455 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Nicolas Colin, a former French Treasury official and the co-founder of a European startup accelerator whose work sits at the intersection of technology, markets, geopolitics, and global finance. In the first hour of their conversation, Kofinas and Colin break down Colin's "Late Cycle Investment Theory" and the framework behind it. They draw on Carlota Perez's model of technological revolutions and techno-economic paradigms, explore the role of speculative manias and market concentration, and examine why Colin argues that AI is less a brand-new technological revolution than an intensification of the computing-and-network paradigm that has been unfolding for the past 50 years. They also compare the current moment to the 1970s as a historical analogue and discuss why Colin believes financial systems are often the last piece to be rebuilt after a major paradigm shift. In the second hour, Kofinas and Colin explore what this late-cycle thesis means for investors, the public, and the geostrategic competition between the United States and China. They discuss how tokenization and programmable money could reshape the global financial system's infrastructure, and how today's "Trump Shock" might be the opening move in a broader financial reset. They also examine what financial fragmentation between two competing spheres—one led by China and one by the U.S.—may look like in practice, why programmable grid infrastructure and a new scale of electrification may be leading candidates for the next technological revolution, and what all of this implies for public debt servicing, inflation, financial repression, and wealth redistribution as proximity services replace the factory floor as the central battleground over which a new social contract will be formed. Send us a textWorking through the emotions that our dysfunctional families leave behind There is a reason the quiet after the holidays feels louder than the chaos itself. When the family leaves, when the door finally closes, when the house settles back into stillness, something strange happens. Your body exhales, but your nervous system does not fully stand down. You feel relief mixed with guilt. Exhaustion mixed with sadness. Peace mixed with a low hum of anxiety you cannot explain. That is not weakness. That is not ingratitude. That is not you being dramatic. That is the after effect of being emotionally activated for days or weeks inside a family system that still carries unhealed wounds. The holidays do not create dysfunction. They reveal it. And when it is over, what remains are the leftovers. Emotional. Physical. Psychological. Spiritual. This article is about naming those leftovers. Understanding why they linger. And learning how to gently reclaim your peace without shaming yourself for needing recovery.Because healing does not happen just during the gathering. It happens in the quiet after.Support the show✌️Thanks for Subscribing! ✅ Enjoy these links below ➡️ 30-40 Men Rising Videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNbD8Sq7PDX912jxaQU60MnpHHr_AHLNi ➡️ Podcast / iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-your-story-matters-podcast-with-branon-dempsey/id1609639138 ➡️ Branon Dempsey Substack: https://branondempsey.substack.com ➡️ Join our Threads, Instagram, X Bluesky: @branondempsey ➡️ Linktree: https://linktr.ee/BranonDempsey Copyright 2025 Your Story Matters, Branon Dempsey | WTT, Inc.

As we come to the end of the year and step into a new one, this episode of Message in the Middle is meant to feel like a bridge between seasons.Instead of a detailed recap, Marianne reflects on the themes that showed up again and again in conversations throughout the year and reminds us why they matter so deeply for women in midlife. In this episode, we explore:Why feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or emotional doesn't mean you're brokenHow identity shifts in midlife are not a crisis, but an invitationWhy rest is not a reward you earn, but a necessityThe importance of connection and communityMarianne also shares a personal note as she heads into a two-week vacation, practicing what she often talks about, slowing down, letting go of perfection, and creating meaningful memories with her kids and grandkids (the thing she loves most). This episode is a reminder that midlife isn't about winding down, it's about waking up. You're not behind. You're not broken. You're just becoming. If this podcast has supported you this year, please be sure to subscribe so you don't miss any episodes in the new year. Text Me!White-knuckling through detox and hoping for the best isn't a strategy, and for many people, it's the reason they keep ending up back in crisis. In this episode of the Sober Vibes Podcast, I chat with addiction recovery specialist and nurse practitioner Trent Carter to unpack a smarter, more sustainable approach to recovery, one that treats addiction like the chronic condition it is and builds a real bridge from crisis to long-term stability.Trent explains why ER detox loops and one-size-fits-all treatment scripts leave people stranded, and how targeted medications, clear education, accountable follow-up, and real-life structure can make sobriety feel achievable instead of fragile.Together, we talk through the Three Pillars of Change — awareness, education, and action and show how these pillars turn lofty recovery goals into daily, realistic wins. Trent breaks down when medications like naltrexone or buprenorphine can be helpful, why “meds as a crutch” is the wrong frame, and how to think about tapering versus long-term maintenance with honesty and clarity. This episode is practical, science-backed, and deeply hopeful, reminding listeners that recovery becomes sustainable when the plan actually matches real life.In this episode, you'll learn:Why ER detox loops and poor discharge planning fail peopleGaps in addiction care quality and educationWhy medication-assisted treatment is a bridge, not a crutchHow outpatient and IOP programs support real-life recoveryWhy inpatient treatment must be followed by strong aftercareResources Mentioned:Subscribe to my YouTube Channel1:1 CoachingMy Book Connect with Trent:WebsiteBookPODCAST SPONSOR:This episode is sponsored by Soberlink, a trusted accountability tool for anyone navigating early recovery. Chad Landers is a former NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year award winner, with over 30 years of hands-on coaching experience and more than 20 years as a gym owner. Chad is also the author of the new book Building Strength and Muscle After 50, which draws on decades of real-world coaching rather than trends or fear-based messaging. In this episode, Chad joins Andrew Coates to discuss what actually changes with training as we age—and what often gets blamed on aging that's really the result of lifestyle, consistency, and accumulated stress.Rather than promoting limitations, Chad makes a strong case for intelligent progression, long-term thinking, and creating training environments that people can sustain well into their 50s, 60s, and beyond. In this episode, Chad shares insights on:• Whether strength training truly needs to change after age 50• What is physiologically different as we age vs. what is lifestyle-driven• Why long breaks from training become less forgiving over time• How consistency becomes more valuable than intensity with age• Whether younger lifters should proactively adjust how they train• If and when exercise selection should change as we get older• The trade-offs between recreation, recovery, and strength goals• Home gym vs. commercial gym training later in life• Why coaching experience matters more than certifications alone• How relationships, environment, and social connection influence long-term success• And much moreInstagram: @chadlandersCHAPTERS00:16 Chad Landers' New Book00:51 The Journey to Becoming an Author04:25 Training After 50: Do We Need a New Approach?07:36 The Importance of Consistency Over Intensity08:41 Physical Changes and Smarter Training Adjustments16:41 Balancing Life, Stress, and Fitness22:33 Proactive Training Strategies When You're Younger25:49 Recreational Activities and Performance Trade-offs26:36 Gym Life and Training Adjustments With Age27:55 Different Training Approaches Across Age Groups29:42 Home Gym vs. Commercial Gym Training32:46 The Value of Coaching Experience41:04 Client Relationships and Long-Term Retention47:50 Final Thoughts and Book PromotionSUPPORT THE SHOWIf this episode helped you, you can help me by:• Subscribing and checking out more episodes• Sharing it on your social media (tag me — I'll respond)• Sending it to a friend who wants to stay strong without burning outFOLLOW ANDREW COATESInstagram: @andrewcoatesfitnesshttps://www.andrewcoatesfitness.comPARTNERS AND RESOURCESRP Strength App (use code COATESRP)https://www.rpstrength.com/coatesJust Bite Me Meals (use code ANDREWCOATESFITNESS for 10% off)https://justbitememeals.com/MacrosFirst – FREE Premium TrialDownload MacrosFirst → During setup, answer “How did you hear about us?”Type: ANDREWKNKG Bags (15% off)https://www.knkg.com/Andrew59676Versa Gripps (discount link)https://www.versagripps.com/andrewcoatesTRAINHEROIC – FREE 90-Day Trial (2 steps)Go to: https://www.trainheroic.com/liftfreeReply to the email you receive (or email trials@trainheroic.com) and let them know Andrew sent you
The Justice Department and the FBI are currently in complete violation of the law when it comes to the Epstein Transparency Act. They are clearly hoping we just embrace our nihilism and give up ever knowing what happened because deep down we accept the rich and powerful get to live under different rules and they'll just get away with it. Well, that is unacceptable to me, to our guest, Epstein expert Tara Palmeri, and I hope it's unacceptable to you. Regional Rasslin' #119 has arrived, with Ray Russell & guest Steve Crawford talking Angelo Poffo's ICW in 1981. We cover it all from the year of 81, from the dark Crusher Broomfield storyline to Randy Savage's run-in with the law at the local Waffle House, from Pez Whatley as "Miss Macho" to the infamous Bob Roop Sugarhold Challenge escape by William Harding. From the Macho Man stealing a steak to the summer exodus of top talent like Orton, Roop, the Devil's Duo, Izzy. Plus, we discuss the business aspect of the promotion... Who was running what, how many "partners" had points in the company(?).. and what Crybaby Edwards meant behind the scenes during the early 1980s. A few great memories shared from fans who watched it, and even more quotes shared from many of the talents who lived it! It's quite possibly the most eventful and assuredly the most profitable year of the outlaw promotion's short run. It's all right here just in time for the hoidays. In Episode 454 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with author, futurist, and U.S. foreign policy expert Jamie Metzl about the aims and objectives of the 2025 National Security Strategy and its implications for American prosperity and power in the 21st century. Jamie and Demetri spend the first hour of this conversation digging into the Trump administration's 2025 National Security Strategy and the story that the administration is trying to tell to the American people and to itself about America's place in the world, where it went astray, and what needs to be done on a strategic planning level in order to "Make America Great Again." From there, Metzl and Kofinas debate whether the strategy amounts to a "containment" of China or something closer to a 19th-century balance-of-power where the largest and most powerful countries—namely the United States, Russia, and China—will be granted the freedom to operate with impunity within their own spheres of influence, dealing a final death blow to the international rules-based liberal order that the United States sought to universalize after the fall of the Soviet Union more than three decades ago. The second hour is a wide-ranging tour through what this strategy might look like in practice, from the Western Hemisphere and Venezuela to Europe and Ukraine, and what "power politics" means when so much of modern conflict is fought through influence campaigns, institutional sabotage, and cyber operations rather than through the use of conventional arms and occupations. The two also explore the dangerous vacuum created when a superpower can no longer clearly articulate what it stands for—at home or abroad—and how that confusion can lead to a cascade of unintended consequences that further destabilize the international system, resulting in a new form of total war. I recently read a quote that said “I will never forgive him for making America a place people fear, a place people don't like, don't trust, don't want to do business with, don't want to visit, don't want anything to do with. He has made America a place people laugh at, a place that is cruel and bigoted. America is no longer a destination. It is a place to be avoided.” And it resonated so deeply with me. I'm tired. You're tired. We're all exhausted and the hits just keep coming. So what do we do? Let's talk about it. In Episode 453 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Jason Furman, the former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, about the state of the U.S. economy, the AI Bubble, monetary policy, inflation, price controls, and much more. Jason and Demetri spend the first hour of their conversation exploring his economic framework, what he learned from his time working inside the Clinton and Obama White Houses, and how these experiences shaped his perspective on the role of government in the economy. The two then delve into Furman's thoughts on artificial intelligence. They discuss whether we're living through an AI bubble, where Jason anticipates the greatest productivity gains from the adoption of AI in the U.S. service sector, and his perspective on AI regulation. They also discuss the limitations of our inflation models, whether we have a good working understanding of the causes of inflation, whether the Fed has implicitly raised its inflation target, and how large, structural deficits and political constraints will shape the Fed's ability to manage that target in the years ahead. In the second hour, Kofinas and Furman shift to a discussion about the politics of affordability and a growing sense, especially among younger Americans, that the costs associated with achieving the American dream have become insurmountable for almost all but the very wealthy. They debate the political appeal and efficacy of price controls, as well as the extent to which tariffs, industrial policy, and currency depreciation can or should be used to reshape global supply chains and rebuild U.S. domestic manufacturing in areas deemed critical for national security. They also discuss the US trade deficit and capital account surplus, what a weaker dollar may tell us about the government's policy objectives, how corruption, rule of law, and institutional decay might eventually feed back into foreign appetite for US assets, and what is at stake in the choice of the next Fed chair—both for the independence of the central bank and for the long-term credibility of American monetary policy. The Trump Administration has put billions of dollars into building an immigration superstructure meant to punish those who have done nothing wrong and intimidate everyone else – including legal immigrants and US citizens. Weirdly enough, that's proving not to be very popular. According to new polling from the Associated Press, Trump is now deeply underwater on the subject of immigration – with 60 percent of respondents opposing his handling of the issue. So to talk more about what's happening with immigration, from the Administration's plans for 2026 to its many horrifying offenses, we spoke to Aaron Reichlin-Melnick. He's a Senior Fellow at the American Immigration Council. And in headlines, dueling healthcare bills fail in the Senate, nature-lovers push back on plans to make President Trump the face of their National Park adventures, and Disney becomes the first major studio to license its characters to OpenAI's video generator. This holiday season, gift someone a Friends of the Pod subscription or treat yourself.
