On today's episode:  we'll be pulling off the front of our skulls and spending some time fingering our limbic systems; we'll learn why not all fire rescue services are created equal; and we'll find out how hot it needs to be for your skin to melt off.And if you had beenlistening to this as a Patreon supporter, you get to enjoy an additional 8 minutes where we discuss: why calling Germans stoic clock-watching robots is considered so flattering; you'd find out if you'd be considered an idiot, moron or imbecile back in the day; and you'd learn how Dusseldorf compares to Hiroshima.I will also point out that at the end of the episode, there is a very special Book Giveaway contest! That's right. I'm giving away the very first book/piece of research I ever used in the creation of the show. William McKeown's "Idaho Falls: The Untold Story of America's First Nuclear Accident" using a once-in-a-lifetime Name That Tune style contest. I don't have a safety segment against that kind of thing, so your gentle intervention was appreciated. We ended last year with a bang and start the new year with a whoosh! I hope you all at least began 2025 in a better space, but even if you didn't, we're burning down an airport together, so forget about your worries for an hour or so.

Trying to find wholesome entertainment can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. As Christians, the most we usually hope for is entertainment that doesn't undermine what we believe. But finding entertainment that actually reinforces Biblical values while wrestling through tough issues, does that even exist? It does. In this episode, Catherine is joined by author Felicia Ferguson to explore the world of redemptive fiction, a genre that tackles real-life issues from a biblical perspective. Felicia's latest novel, When Secrets Come Calling, could be ripped from today's headlines. The story centers on a dark secret that threatens to destroy the lives of a former couple. Felicia's characters turn to each other and then to God for hope and answers. Catherine and Felicia also discuss the importance of finding inspiring stories that shine God's light, especially in a world where such content can be hard to come by. Together, they dive into the impact fiction can have in addressing tough topics and encouraging listeners to make a difference for God's kingdom. Join Catherine and Felicia for a laid-back conversation that offers a refreshing break from the usual tough topics discussed on the show, and find the perfect beach read for your summer vacation. BOOK GIVEAWAY!: Enter for a chance to win a copy of Felicia's award-winning debut novel, The Choices She Made by subscribing HERE or responding to Catherine's Instagram post.     GUEST BIO: Felicia achieved master's degrees in Healthcare Administration and Speech-Language Pathology, but has written since childhood and dreamed of authoring books that teach and inspire others. Catherine Pakaluk, an economist and director of Social Research at the Catholic University, recently asked the question why do these women decide to have more children? She traveled across the country and spoke with 55 women, all of whom had 5 or more children, to find out why they decided to have more children. Her new book, "Hannah's Children: the Women Quietly Defying the Birth Dearth," contains her research and stories of the women she interviewed. Formerly, she was Assistant Professor and Chair of the Economics Department at Ave Maria University. Her primary areas of research include economics of education and religion, family studies and demography, Catholic social thought and political economy. Dr. Pakaluk is the 2015 recipient of the Acton Institute's Novak Award, a prize given for “significant contributions to the study of the relationship between religion and economic liberty.”   Pakaluk did her doctoral work at Harvard University under Caroline Hoxby, David Cutler, and 2016 Nobel-laureate Oliver Hart. Her dissertation, “Essays in Applied Microeconomics”, examined the relationship between religious ‘fit' and educational outcomes, the role of parental effort in observed peer effects and school quality, and theoretical aspects of the contraceptive revolution as regards twentieth century demographic trends.      Beyond her formal training in economics, Dr. Pakaluk studied Catholic social thought under the mentorship of F. Russell Hittinger, and various aspects of Thomistic thought with Steven A. Long. She is a widely-admired writer and sought-after speaker on matters of culture, gender, social science, the vocation of women, and the work of Edith Stein. Set in Colombia and the United States and told through the shifting perspectives of each family member, Engel examines the beauty and cruelty of life in the diaspora, crafting “a breathtaking story of the unimaginable prices paid for a better life” (Esquire). With “meticulously rendered descriptions of Andean landscapes and mythology” (New York Times Book Review), Infinite Country is “at once a sweeping love story and tragic drama” (Elle), “forcefully examining what unites a family beyond the divisions borders and policies forge” (Los Angeles Review of Books). Through the intimacies of one family's story, Engel “challenges us to consider that the United States has always been a place of borders” (Harvard Review of Books). “Told by a chorus of voices and perspectives, this is as much an all-American story as it is a global one” (Booklist). Pseudepigraphy: Forgery or Fan Fiction?

Ancient authors had no problem writing texts in other people's names, and that includes plenty of biblical writers. If Paul only wrote 7 of the 13 Pauline epistles, for example, who wrote the other 6, and why did they stamp Paul's name on them? The practice is called pseudepigraphy — from the Greek for "false inscription" — and a lot of biblical scholars will tell you it's straight-up forgery. But were ancient authors really trying to deceive their readers? Or were they using a standard literary practice in the ancient world of writing in the name of beloved figures (Paul, Peter, Moses, Enoch) to add new layers of meaning to their texts? Our guest Kelsie Rodenbiker argues that pseudepigraphy in the Bible has more in common with fan fiction than forgery. The Hebrew Bible wasn't created by one of the mighty empires of the ancient world — Egypt,  Assyria or Babylon — but written in the rubble of a small, conquered kingdom. So how has this "epic monument to defeat" not only survived for 2,600 years, but spawned three world religions and influenced countless lives? Because the authors of the Hebrew Bible invented something completely new. They created a "people." Helen and Dave were thrilled to talk with Jacob Wright, biblical scholar and author of the mind-blowing new book, Why the Bible Began: An Alternative History of Scripture and Its Origins. The Airley's made aliyah from the United States in 2006. Binyamin attended yeshiva, spent time in Eilat, and worked on the family's farm, including most Shabbats.   Binyomin Airley joined the front lines of the battle VS Hamas to secure the land of Israel and protect the Jewish people. He unfortunately was killed in battle.   At his shloshim, a moving kumzitz led by Shlomo Katz began with people singing softly in their seats and evolved into heartfelt t'filah with people standing and swaying, arm in arm, many with tears in their eyes. Jennifer interrupted the singing in the middle of a song and commented that she noticed too many sad faces in the room. She explained that this was not meant to be an evening of crying. It was meant to be an evening to honor Binyamin and open our hearts using songs for t'filah. She begged that people open the gates of Shamayim with t'filah b'simchah, even with the pain. Jennifer teaches by example how to keep going. She is leading the way and bringing her community along with her.    The Airley's Emunah and Bitachon has been on full display since Binyomin was suddenly killed in battle.    ►Ceremian (Alpert and Associates) Call Moshe Alpert!  Email: Moshe.alpert@nm.com for a free consultation, or head to https://bit.ly/moshealpert Or call 718-644-1594  _________________________________________ ►Collars and Co For the best-looking and most comfortable dress shirts in the world.. www.Collarsandco.com  Use promo code: Winter15 for 15% off all order $100+ _______________________________________________________  ►Town Appliance Visit https://www.townappliance.com Message Town Appliance on WhatsApp: https://bit.ly/Townappliance_whatsapp  ________________________________________________ ►Mosaica Press Book of The Week Ready to unlock the secrets of family, faith, and freedom?
