Melissa the coach is an Elton John super fan. To date, she's seen him in concert 47 times. When she found herself making excuses to her friends about why she couldn't go to his 60th birthday concert - when the real reason was that she couldn't afford it - Melissa realized she had a problem. Her husband had a well paying job but they still didn't have enough money. Her initial solution was to make more money, so she joined a network marketing company, followed the system, and it worked! She made more money. But the problem persisted. They still didn't HAVE any money. "If you can't manage a small amount of money, you can't manage a large amount of money." Melissa now knows why they weren't getting ahead. They weren't budgeting and they didn't have a set plan for the money they were brining in. Throughout this episode Melissa shares a candid story of “putting Christmas on credit” and how she got the wake-up call which changed her life. Melissa the Coach now coaches others on how to take control of their finances, get out of debt, and start enjoying their lives again. In this episode I'm joined by Melissa Thomas (aka Melissa the Coach). She is a personal finance coach, speaker, and author of Building My Yellow Brick Road: Life Lessons from Pursuing a Dream. Melissa teaches us from the beginning of the process how to make a budget. I was surprised at how often I get asked about budgeting, so I think this episode will be helpful to many. Like she suggests, listen twice--once just to listen and once more to take notes. You'll want to capture her ideas about: -How to get in the right mindset so that you actually enjoy the budget review process -How to stay motivated when it doesn't seem like you're seeing results -How to "spring clean" your old budget You can find Melissa as "Melissa the Coach" across all social media platforms, and her website is www.melissathecoach.com.
How a dream to meet Elton John led to a coaching business and a book.In this episode, Melissa Thomas talks about how she made changes in her life so she could pursue her dream of meeting Elton John. That led to a coaching business and a book. You can have a dream, but achieving that dream can be daunting. Money can be an obstacle, or it can be a tool. And what about expertise? Melissa tells how she tackled the money problem, built a coaching business teaching others what she learned, and authored her first book.[00:01:20] “It's funny because in all of my years of growing up being an entrepreneur and owning my own company was never on any sort of bucket list that I ever wrote out. It just was one of those things of following—one step kind of led into another. But it all started way back in the day when I was 19 years old and I went to my very first Elton John concert…”[00:03:50] Melissa tells how debt got in the way of pursuing her dream.[00:05:40] “That was really the very first time I had to kind of take a step back and assess my financial situation and say, ‘What can we do differently?’ Because money is the thing that is standing in the way of pursuing my dream.”[00:06:25] Just increasing your income isn’t the answer:“The problem is, if you can't manage five hundred dollars you can't manage twelve hundred dollars or thirteen hundred dollars—or however much extra money I was bringing in every month. So even though I made more money, I never learned the skills on how to manage it better.”[00:08:52] “You’re doing it wrong.” This is the turning point.[00:14:17] This is where reality sets in. It's one thing to know you have debt. It's another thing to look at the number on the paper staring back at you…Melissa starts teaching what she’s learned, and one thing leads to another.[00:17:24] I found this encouraging, because you don’t have to be a full-on expert or have a lot of credentials. You can be a little further along than a handful of other people, and teach what you know. Then you learn more, and you can teach more. As you learn new aspects of whatever it is you’re doing, you can add to what you’re teaching.[00:20:23] “Talking about money is so taboo. Especially if you're bad with money.”[00:25:40] Budgeting: “The reason you don't know where your money went is because you didn't tell it where to go in the first place. And that is that's the most important lesson.”

Finding Your Elton John and Finding Financial Freedom For Melissa Thomas, having the money to go to as many Elton John concerts as possible—and get front-row seats! — gave her the motivation to pay off the $43,000 in debt. Melissa and her husband were stuck in the ‘we can afford a payment’ mentality, buying new cars and a home on credit to keep up with Mr. & Mr. Jones. She became a stay-at-home mom by default after her sons were born, giving up her retail job because daycare cost more than she earned. Problem was, the family didn’t change their lifestyle despite the shift from two incomes to one. In December 2009, Melissa was shopping online for Christmas presents with the help of her friends Visa, Mastercard and Discover, when a voice inside her said, ‘You’re doing this wrong.’ It occurred to Melissa that her sons knew a whole lot about Santa, but very little about the true meaning of Christmas. So, on January 1, 2010, Melissa and her husband enrolled in Financial Peace University and by 2013, they were debt free. Now Melissa serves as a money coach, speaker and author by way of her business, Melissa the Coach. Today on Queer Money™, she shares her journey from $43,000 in the red to debt free Elton John groupie. Melissa explains her effort to teach her sons the value of experiences over stuff and how her life has changed now that debt is no longer an issue. She speaks to the process of saving six months’ worth of expenses, discussing how her family went about eliminating extras until they were financially secure.

Being a small business owner can be stressful. Sometimes, our businesses can add conflict in our relationships with significant others. In this episode, Jeff and Kristin discuss ways to minimize this conflict so you can start building dreams together. Even if your significant other does not work in your business, conflicts can exist. These conflicts usually stem from a lack of understanding between the business owner and non-business owner significant other. Creating more understanding between the two of you will allow for more joy and less stress. Understanding yourself Conflicts often arise because the business owner does not have a clear vision for her business and how it will affect her life. Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you are in this position: What are your dreams? How will your business help you achieve these dreams? What steps are you taking to achieve those dreams? Are you setting deadlines? We also recommend that you take the 5 love languages assessment. This will give you some interesting insight into what acts make you feel loved. We recommend that you also ask your significant other to take the assessment. For more in-depth information about the 5 love languages, consider purchasing the book. Listening and learning Now that you've gotten some clarity on your own life, it's time to get some clarity on your significant other. Often, we complain that our significant other does not understand our point of view, especially when it pertains to our business. However, how often do we ask if we really understand our significant other's perspective? We often assume that those around us understand our business and our plan. Is that really true? Do we know our loved one's goals and dreams? Here are some tips to start the conversation: How will your business benefit your loved one? How will your business affect your loved one? Does my significant other understand my business and my dreams? What are my significant other's desires and dreams? How can we find connections between our goals and dreams? Understanding your loved one's drives and concerns can help open a dialog to aid in building your dreams together. Minimizing conflict When conflicts do arise, we need to step back from the emotion and look for valid concerns. Opening up a dialog makes it easier for your significant other to voice concerns. Unless we are willing and able to hear those concerns in a rational manner, your loved one will not be willing to share. This causes resentment and small things blow up into huge arguments. It is difficult to hear criticism; however, if we are not open to our loved one sharing honest concerns, this will lead to conflict. Don't let your first response be defensiveness. Ask yourself if there are valid points in those concerns. Holding yourself accountable Over the past 15 years working with small business owners and mediating conflicts between couples, many conflicts stem from delayed or broken promises. We often set deadlines for ourselves and watch those deadlines pass. When this happens repeatedly, your significant other will lose confidence in you, especially if you are not sharing reasons why these deadlines are being missed. Sometimes we don't like to share what is going on in our business because we are disappointed in our own progress. We shut our significant other out because we don't want them to see our mess or our failure. This will just cause further conflict down the road. Would you treat your customers this way? We should never treat our partner worse than our own customers. Holding yourself accountable, not only to yourself but also to your partner may help you achieve more. Ask your partner for insight in some areas of your business. If you are struggling with something, ask if you can run the problem past your partner. It may give your partner some important insight into how hard you are working. Don't use this as an opportunity to have a complain-a-thon. Allow this to be a conversation that can help you complete something constructive. If your conflicts involve money, check out Melissa the Coach. She teaches a money management system which is very similar to the one we used to pay off over $220,000 in debt. Without getting our financial house in order, we would have never been able to get Jeff out of his 9 to 5 and working full-time for Ingram Digital Media.
