Are you one of the many people who end up shocked by the ultimate similarity of romantic relationships that felt very different starting out? Why is it that we find the same patterns repeating, the same problems coming up over and over? In this classic episode, Andrew talks to author and attachment theory specialist Tara Blair-Ball. Tara explains how attachment theory - which is grounded in analysis of how we bonded to our mother as infants - can explain these patterns. Andrew and Tara emphasise that rather than dwelling on the particular faults of partner A and partner B, we can try to understand how our earliest relationships in life have determined later ones. This will help us make the changes that can lead to more meaningful and more fulfilling relationships. Intimacy in marriage is one of the most important yet often least discussed topics, especially in faith-based circles. In this episode, Corrine and Neil open up about their own journey—what they've learned, what's changed over the years, and why communication is everything when it comes to connection. From navigating different love languages to understanding the role of intimacy beyond just physical connection, they break down the small but meaningful shifts that can make a big difference in a relationship. They also share surprising insights from a recent study on how often married couples with kids are actually intimate (hint: it's probably less than social media makes you think!). Plus, Corrine gets candid about the backlash she received after writing about intimacy on Substack and why so many women feel like they have nowhere to turn for real, honest conversations on this topic. If you've ever felt like you and your spouse are just coexisting instead of truly connecting, or if you've struggled with mismatched expectations in marriage, this episode is full of insights and real-life experiences that will leave you feeling encouraged, validated, and equipped with a fresh perspective on prioritizing intimacy in a way that actually strengthens your relationship. The book Corrine and Neil mentioned in this episode: The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts by Gary Chapman. You can check it out here on Amazon.

Marriage is a living relationship that requires constant care and attention. Dr. Gary Chapman, renowned author of The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts, highlights this in his resource, A Couple's Guide to a Growing Marriage. This Bible study helps couples invest in their marriage with a structured, intentional approach, ensuring their relationship grows stronger.Working on your marriage benefits not just the couple but also their children and the broader community. Strong marriages create strong families, which have a positive impact on society. For Christian couples, it's essential to follow biblical principles for marriage, as the Bible has much to say about how to nurture this sacred relationship. What's In The Study? This 12-week Bible study includes:Weekly Activities and Bible Study: Each session starts with an opening activity and a Bible study focused on topics related to marriage and our relationship with God.Practical Exercises: Couples engage in learning exercises that apply biblical teachings to their relationship.Scripture Memorization: Memorizing verses helps reinforce the lessons learned.Daily Conversations: Couples are encouraged to have daily conversations with God and with each other, fostering open communication and deeper understanding.Topics covered include communication, expressing love, handling anger, and resolving conflicts—essential skills for any marriage. The Importance of CommunicationA key theme in the study is the importance of regular, honest communication. Marriages don't drift together; they drift apart. Therefore, couples must intentionally spend time together, discuss their feelings, and address issues. By listening to each other with the goal of understanding, not arguing, couples can find solutions and strengthen their bond.Managing Finances TogetherOne chapter focuses on making money an asset to your marriage while stressing the importance of financial transparency and fidelity. Managing money together is a significant part of marriage, and disagreements over finances are common. The study encourages couples to align on issues like giving, saving, and spending while working as a team to manage household finances. The Win: A Stronger, Healthier MarriageCouples who commit to this study will be better equipped to nurture a loving, supportive, and united marriage. Not only will they benefit, but their children will also see a healthy model of financial and relational teamwork.Dr. Chapman's A Couple's Guide to a Growing Marriage offers a pathway to the marriage every couple dreams of—one built on love, trust, and shared faith. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have a friend who buys a house a year and uses it for Airbnb. He's profitable. I'm just concerned about what they're talking about, the economy, and the changes that might happen. I would like to know your thoughts and an exit strategy should things go south. My husband and I are dairy farmers with operating and capital lines of credit. We've struggled to make progress on these lines in the last couple of years. We have some money in a Roth IRA that we're considering using to pay down the lines of credit, which now have an 8.5% interest rate. In His wisdom, He placed us in a variety of circumstances that require us to find our way back to His pure love. So, what qualifies me to speak about love? My childhood experience of the opposite of love. From that austere beginning, and the distaste it formed inside me, I searched for and eventually created a method that transformed my life from anger to loving everyone. Growing up in a family of abuse, physical touch became my preferred love style, only because of the regularity. I could almost count on it. It was consistent. I came to think that was the way to express love. But deep inside, I knew that was a twisted belief. I wanted a better life for myself, which is why I created a paradigm shift that works. In this book, you'll find what helped me move from a childhood boot camp of abuse to being a person who loves everyone and can find good about anyone in any circumstance. This is truly the role of love. If you don't already have Gary Chapman's popular book on love and relationships, order your copy or get the audiobook for free on Amazon to learn the juicy details. Introduction Do you feel loved? Do you think you're giving the kind of love your partner needs? The language of love is extremely complex. We all experience love in different ways and have different emotional needs. In The 5 Love Languages, Gary Chapman outlines how we all have our own love language. Each of us has a specific emotional need that needs to be satisfied so that we can feel loved. Therefore, in each romantic relationship, we need to understand our partners' love language better. Strong relationships can last when both partners understand each other's love language. The 5 Love Languages was first published in 1992 and has since become a bestseller, with millions of copies sold worldwide. It explains there are five love languages that we use to express and receive love. These are words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Each person has a primary love language. Understanding and speaking this language can greatly improve relationships. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Since the '90s, couples have turned to the theory of the five “love languages” to help navigate relationship pitfalls. But a new scientific paper suggests that the science behind the idea is shaky.Read more:If you've ever tried to improve communication in a relationship, you may have come across the concept of the five “love languages” — different ways of showing and receiving affection that have helped couples understand each other for decades. The theory comes from a Baptist pastor turned relationship counselor named Gary Chapman, whose 1992 book “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts” has been on and off the bestseller list for years. Now, a group of researchers at the University of Toronto and York University have set out to investigate the scientific underpinnings of the love languages — or lack thereof. They reviewed the theory, and came up with some relationship advice of their own. Richard Sima, who writes the Brain Matters column for The Washington Post, reports on their findings.Today's show was produced by Emma Talkoff. It was mixed by Sean Carter. It was edited by Ariel Plotnick, Lucy Perkins, and Maggie Penman. Subscribe to The Washington Post here.

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. John 13:13-16 ESV Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross. Finding your voice as a creator, understanding cultural appropriation, and cultivating gratitude with Marta Rivera Diaz from Sense and Edibility. ----- Welcome to episode 437 of The Food Blogger Pro Podcast! This week on the podcast, Bjork interviews Marta Rivera Diaz from Sense and Edibility. How Grief, a Diagnosis with MS, and Biracial Background Shaped Marta Rivera Diaz's Career as a Food Creator Every once in a while on the Food Blogger Pro Podcast, we have an episode that feels like “required listening” for food creators. This is one of them! Bjork and Marta have a really thoughtful and moving conversation about the importance of finding your voice as a food creator and presenting your authentic self to your followers and community. Marta grew up as a child of two active-duty airmen and as a biracial individual (she is half-Black and half-Puerto Rican). She was also diagnosed with MS in her early thirties. All of these experiences have shaped her as a person and as a creator. She speaks beautifully about the effects of her background on her personality and her work, and why it is so important to her to share recipes that reflect her heritage. It's a perfect episode for the week after Thanksgiving, as we all reflect on what we're grateful for in our personal and professional lives. Don't miss it! In this episode, you'll learn: How Marta's background impacted how she presents herself to the world (and why she's working to change that). How she found her voice and true self as a creator. More about her culinary background and how she came to create Sense and Edibility. How her diagnosis with MS in her early thirties changed the trajectory of her career. How her seasons of grief shaped her approach to cooking and creating. What D, E, I, A (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) is and how it relates to the food blogging community. The difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. What advice Marta would give to her younger self. You've probably heard of love languages, or maybe you haven't. But when minister Gary Chapman noted that spouses often communicated love past one another, he realized that we express love in different ways. So, he proposed that there are five love languages—and his book of the same name became a bestseller and perennial favorite. Today, we'll talk about those languages and what they mean when it comes to our favorite topic: sex. Odds are, you've heard of the five love five languages by now, and you may even have proclaimed out loud that your love language is physical touch, quality time, or one of the five. But in my work as a therapist, I find that people are missing the real magic behind what makes love languages a powerful concept and maybe misunderstand the original intent. Three decades ago, Gary Chapman, a 50-year-old Southern Baptist pastor with a doctorate in adult education, introduced the concept to the world with his seminal book, "The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts." In our two-part series, we are going to break down how to effectively utilize the five love languages to give and receive the love you deserve.Similar Episodes 79: Should You Consider Couples Counseling? w/Dr. Kimberly VanBuren 57: Heal Relationship Disconnects w/Third Layer Conversations Rate, Review, & Follow-on Apple Podcasts: Please consider rating and reviewing my show! Hey friend! We all want to live without fear of the future, for ourselves and for our children. But, in today's world, it's easy to look around and wonder if it's even possible. There's just so many things outside of our control and how do we cope with them, much less live without fear. Today, my friend Lisa Whittle joins me on the show to talk about just that. We walk through those challenging questions we've all had about fear, pain and the future and what it means to trust God rather than give into fear. Lisa knows what she's talking about, too! She is a best-selling author and has written a new book called God Knows, all about how those two little words can change our lives if we will let them. Join us as we talk about: How to lean into the comfort that God knows all and is in control, even (and maybe especially) in seasons of pain Why believing God knows can bring peace to motherhood The three reasons people stop dreaming (plus, how dreaming is a form of self-care!) An analogy that will change how you see boundaries and letting people into your inner circle Once you hear this conversation, you'll want to check out Lisa's last visit to the show where we shared practical tips as you consider ways to move forward in strength. These conversations about dreams and goals will change your life. Lisa Whittle is a Bible teacher, speaker, and host of the Jesus Over Everything podcast. She is the author of nine books, including her latest, God Knows: When Your Worries and Whys Need More Than Temporary Relief. Lisa and her husband, Scott, have three children and live in Charlotte, NC. Favorite quotes: “It is hard to rest and rely on God for your pain relief but what choice do you have?” “When we actually get to know who God is and understand the vastness of what it means God knows. It shifts something within us.” “Dreaming is self-care.” “If you are a believer in Jesus Christ you definitely want to root your own life in him so as you root yourself in him your dreams come in alignment.” “When we become committed to our boundaries we only have to verbalize them 10% of the time.” “Choose your life travelers wisely.” Coaching this week: Piling on the positives to transform your relationships. Today we're talking about some of the biggest pitfalls around big families or families in general, as well as some warning flags that the health of your family may not really be that healthy in the long term. It may show up later if we are not in tune to some of these little stages of development or some pitfalls that we can fall into as parents or overlook when it comes to raising our children. If we see themes that are consistently showing up in families where the children aren't talking to or resenting their parents as adults, we start to question what can we do when it comes to parenting our own children that sets us up for having a rich, encouraging relationship for life and our children not feeling like we messed them up. These are just some things that have stuck out to us. It is extremely necessary to be vigilant as a parent day in and day out. If the Lord has given us these children to steward, He is also going to give us the grace and wisdom to be able to raise them. Once we become a parent, we are always a parent. It's not over at 18 or when our children get married and leave the home. A parent that is always there when you need them is an incredible gift to a child at any stage of life. We think the number one pitfall in families is ultimately parents who don't have a humility before Christ and a dependency upon Him and think that they have all the answers. God is the only one who can guide us in this way with our kids. It's not a program or more people would be doing it right. Parenting is a big, long and exciting journey. It's filled with so much joy, as well as so much unknown as to what is going to happen. Being aware of these pitfalls and warnings can hopefully help you along the way to be a successful parent in the days ahead!
