Rehana Earle and Melissa Thomas look at the tax stories making headlines including the impact of HMRC staff strikes during the self-assessment filing season, and a Russian financier’s unusual claim that his bacon-smoking factory (complete with a wine cellar, pool room, and 40-foot bar) qualifies as a commercial space. They also discuss the curious case of a taxpayer hit with late filing penalties despite having no UK tax liability and a game-changing VAT tribunal ruling that reclassifies powdered food supplements after a challenge to their classification as sports drinks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the world of business branding, there are 2 kinds of organizations. The ones that talk about what they do, and the ones that focus on what makes them unique. You can guess which one grows faster and has more loyal customers. Branding is non-negotiable - it's the only way to stand out in a crowded marketplace. In this industry, many companies don't do enough to brand themselves differently, or the brands they do have are stuck in the past. As a result, there are hundreds of companies people can't really tell apart. That's why it's critical to take diligent steps to be memorable and recognizable. How do you know it's time to rebrand? What are the pillars of a good brand? How can legacy brands harness all their digital power? In this episode, I'm joined by CEO and Founder of Moxie Global Consulting, Melissa Thomas. We talk about my recent rebrand, and inventive ways to make your brand come across differently. There's a big difference between branding that tells you what a company does and branding that tells you why they do it or how they solve a problem. -Melissa Thomas Things You'll Learn In This Episode -Put both your feet in the digital world The world may have moved to the digital space but a lot of companies still haven't caught up. Why is a website so necessary? -The biggest branding oversights in aviation The aviation industry is prone to mergers and product changes. We also have a lot of legacy companies that haven't fully embraced today's branding standards. How do you make sure your brand reflects the current state of your business? -The right time to rebrand In a rapidly evolving world, a brand can get stale really fast. From a suburban sidewalk in southern California, Jad and Robert witness the carnage of a gruesome turf war. Though the tiny warriors doing battle clock in at just a fraction of an inch, they have evolved a surprising, successful, and rather unsettling strategy of ironclad loyalty, absolute intolerance, and brutal violence.David Holway, an ecologist and evolutionary biologist from UC San Diego, takes us to a driveway in Escondido, California where a grisly battle rages. In this quiet suburban spot, two groups of ants are putting on a chilling display of dismemberment and death. According to David, this battle line marks the edge of an enormous super-colony of Argentine ants. Think of that anthill in your backyard, and stretch it out across five continents.Argentine ants are not good neighbors. When they meet ants from another colony, any other colony, they fight to the death, and tear the other ants to pieces. While other kinds of ants sometimes take slaves or even have sex with ants from different colonies, the Argentine ants don't fool around. If you're not part of the colony, you're dead.According to evolutionary biologist Neil Tsutsui and ecologist Mark Moffett, the flood plains of northern Argentina offer a clue as to how these ants came to dominate the planet. Because of the frequent flooding, the homeland of Linepithema humile is basically a bootcamp for badass ants. One day, a couple ants from one of these families of Argentine ants made their way onto a boat and landed in New Orleans in the late 1800s. Over the last century, these Argentine ants wreaked havoc across the southern U.S. and a significant chunk of coastal California. In fact, Melissa Thomas, an Australian entomologist, reveals that these Argentine ants are even more well-heeled than we expected - they've made to every continent except Antarctica. No matter how many thousands of miles separate individual ants, when researchers place two of them together - whether they're plucked from Australia, Japan, Hawaii ... even Easter Island - they recognize each other as belonging to the same super-colony.But the really mind-blowing thing about these little guys is the surprising success of their us-versus-them death-dealing. Jad and Robert wrestle with what to make of this ant regime, whether it will last, and what, if anything, it might mean for other warlike organisms with global ambitions. We have some exciting news! With great power, comes great responsibility. Yep, this is a Spider-Man episode. The big screen version of the character has gotten a lot of mileage with three lead actors taking on the role for ten films from Sony and Marvel so far, but it might be Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, a 2018 animated feature, that stands out as the most groundbreaking take on the character(s). There's a lot of reasons for that. Many of them are because of the animation, so we invited Autumn Schultz, an animation expert and good friend, to help with the breakdown. Wow, I took a hiatus…well not really. In this 3rd and final segment with Melissa Thomas, PhD we start with mindfulness. That’s apropos because the Amish deal with time in a different fashion than do the “English”. BTW, I am “mindfully” giving you an extra-long episode… Dr. Thomas also clearly lets us know that she can “unplug” with the Amish. She leaves the phone in the car. That’s an important concept in an age when more and more people seem to be incapable of actually being without their phone for more than 5 minutes. The other thing we discuss is assumptions. For the Amish, their concept of what is “healthy” may be a different concept from that of “English” society. Healthy for the Amish may mean “I can provide for my family.”. Amish patients may not even ask a question thinking a physician’s time is valuable and if there was something to say, the doctor would tell them. Well we find out that time is again a critical factor and Western needs for “getting it done” might not be the best medicine. It might be letting a patient have some time to sort out how disease impacts their lives. It’s also challenging to the average American that thinks that you can’t have free market health care to hear that the Amish will shop around for open heart surgery. They will ask questions to save money. Bottom line the Amish remind all of us that we have a fiduciary duty to our patients. They deserve to know what they are paying for what they are getting. Kudos to Pomerene Hospital. I loved working there 18 years ago in the ER. Had I lived closer to Millersburg I would still be working there. The continuation of our interview with Melissa Thomas PhD and her experiences with the Amish people of Ohio and studying their health care. Melissa has 20+ years of working with the Amish of Ohio and she has gathered so many experiences that she has also published an extremely unique boom of photographs that the Amish gave her permission to create to help people see into their lives. Melissa makes nothing from this project and all proceeds go back into the care of Amish women and preventing deaths from breast cancer. Please consider donating to her project and you can find details here: http://appalcare.org/project-hoffnung/ We also ask that you share this on Facebook and with your friends to get the word out. So the interview takes us from the LSU Tigers and Joe Burrow through a description of the history of the History of the Amish and the values of their community. I’d be remiss in this age of treacherous youth narcissism if I didn’t mention Joe Burrow (who is frankly pretty well-liked around here) and his initial action with fame. He chose not to discuss himself but to focus on the needs of the poor in his community. In the process he helped raise $500,000 for the food bank right before COVID-19 hit the area. That was not an act. Joe is genuinely a good man, and a Bengal, so if you want to follow his lead, consider helping the food bank. Sorry, but I do like reggae. Soooo, I gave you an ample dose of it. Frankly with all of the current kerfluffle I think a good chunk of one drop rhythm will make almost anyone happy…and cousin, we need some happy right now. So, there you are. In this series we find out that would-be meteorologists can fall into things like health care disparity research in Amish communities in Geauga and Holmes County, Ohio. Melissa Thomas PhD has a doctorate in science (public health) and is super smart and as non-threatening as anyone you will ever meet. She is just a very pleasant person and she has a very sophisticated sense of humor. That means that you can have a real conversation with her without feeling like you need a vacation afterward. Melissa has a heart for the Amish. Specifically understanding breast cancer in their communities and helping them not die from a disease that has a pretty good survival rate if patients just know what to do. She works tirelessly at trying to help a substantial portion of the population of Ohio. The talk is definitely about the Amish but it is also about cultural competency and how health care folks can move into and out of cultures that are very different from their own and not do damage in the process. She has a lot of wisdom to share and we hope you find something new to think about. Fun Fact, I edited this in July 2020 and I just went to Amish country and it was vibrant and working and sunny and greatly enjoyable. You should go. As well they have a lot of eBikes. Yes, the Amish do use technology but they are very concerned about how anything they use affects their humility and their relationship with God so they consider carefully the impact of any new thing on their way of life. Go to Amish country, learn and see some wonderful folks who represent some of the awesomeness of our great state. I could not stop talking with Melissa Thomas (aka Melissa the Coach) last week. Here's the continuation of our interview, giving you a peek inside the head of a dedicated individual donor. Her nonprofit of choice is Canines for Service (caninesforservice.org). As you listen, note especially why this means you want most of your contributed income from individuals, and think of ways that you might better connect with your donors.
In this episode I'm joined by Melissa Thomas (aka Melissa the Coach). She is a personal finance coach, speaker, and author of Building My Yellow Brick Road: Life Lessons from Pursuing a Dream. Melissa teaches us from the beginning of the process how to make a budget. I was surprised at how often I get asked about budgeting, so I think this episode will be helpful to many. Like she suggests, listen twice--once just to listen and once more to take notes. You'll want to capture her ideas about: -How to get in the right mindset so that you actually enjoy the budget review process -How to stay motivated when it doesn't seem like you're seeing results -How to "spring clean" your old budget You can find Melissa as "Melissa the Coach" across all social media platforms, and her website is www.melissathecoach.com.
How a dream to meet Elton John led to a coaching business and a book.In this episode, Melissa Thomas talks about how she made changes in her life so she could pursue her dream of meeting Elton John. That led to a coaching business and a book. You can have a dream, but achieving that dream can be daunting. Money can be an obstacle, or it can be a tool. And what about expertise? Melissa tells how she tackled the money problem, built a coaching business teaching others what she learned, and authored her first book.[00:01:20] “It's funny because in all of my years of growing up being an entrepreneur and owning my own company was never on any sort of bucket list that I ever wrote out. It just was one of those things of following—one step kind of led into another. But it all started way back in the day when I was 19 years old and I went to my very first Elton John concert…”[00:03:50] Melissa tells how debt got in the way of pursuing her dream.[00:05:40] “That was really the very first time I had to kind of take a step back and assess my financial situation and say, ‘What can we do differently?’ Because money is the thing that is standing in the way of pursuing my dream.”[00:06:25] Just increasing your income isn’t the answer:“The problem is, if you can't manage five hundred dollars you can't manage twelve hundred dollars or thirteen hundred dollars—or however much extra money I was bringing in every month. So even though I made more money, I never learned the skills on how to manage it better.”[00:08:52] “You’re doing it wrong.” This is the turning point.[00:14:17] This is where reality sets in. It's one thing to know you have debt. It's another thing to look at the number on the paper staring back at you…Melissa starts teaching what she’s learned, and one thing leads to another.[00:17:24] I found this encouraging, because you don’t have to be a full-on expert or have a lot of credentials. You can be a little further along than a handful of other people, and teach what you know. Then you learn more, and you can teach more. As you learn new aspects of whatever it is you’re doing, you can add to what you’re teaching.[00:20:23] “Talking about money is so taboo. Especially if you're bad with money.”[00:25:40] Budgeting: “The reason you don't know where your money went is because you didn't tell it where to go in the first place. And that is that's the most important lesson.”

Melissa Thomas (http://melissathecoach.com) and her husband paid off over $43,000 in debt. It took them almost 4 years to accomplish this goal. Melissa's reason for paying off the debt was simple. She wanted to pursue her dream. She wants to meet Elton John. She has been to many Elton John concerts. She has sat in the front rows, she has received autographs from Elton and she has gone backstage to meet the band. She has even had her picture taken sitting at Elton's piano. Unfortunately, she has not met him in person yet. She will. Melissa talks about her passion for Elton John concerts and his music. She also talks about the discipline required to pay off the debt so she could afford to travel and attend Elton John concerts. Of course by the time the interview airs the festival will be well underway since it is beginning tonight. Melissa Thomas and Stuart Horne came in to pre-record the interview with me earlier in the week and I felt that it was important to share our conversation before Friday evening and before Troika begins. Among many things we chatted about the history of the event, compared it to Hopscotch, and discussed what is going on differently in this years festival.
