FIT Challenge has been putting on obstacle course races since 2013 and we have been to almost every single one of them over the years (we just missed the very first one and the one during the extreme heat wave the summer of 2019)! Unfortunately that all comes to an end after this past weekend since it was their final event. It is the death of the most important New England local OCR that we have had and it also has some backing of that fact with it winning the best small OCR event just about every year that it has been a category. All that being said I tried to get as much content as I could, to try and give FIT Challenge the send off that it deserves! You'll hear from those competing in the elite wave, regular open wavers, ultra athletes, and everything in between! Thank you Robb for everything you've done for the OCR community, I'll see you on the trails! 0:00 – 2:41 – Intro 2:41 – 11:44 – Quick News 11:44 – 14:00 – Content Preface 14:00 - 43:41 - Elite and other Morning Interviews (Ryan Brizzolara, Brett Mazza, Javier Gutierrez, Kara Vandooijeweert, Laura Messner, Jamie Gillon, Jacquie Desmond, Matthew Johnson, AC Hale, and James Golisano) 43:41 - 47:26 - Jimmie, Angela, and Shaun Recap 47:26 - 1:38:40 - Ultra and other afternoon and night Interviews (Code Milne, Asa Coddington, John Schaecter, John Ricker, Grant Bercik, Mike Kantor, Jeff T, Julia Becker Collins, Sam C, Sam Henderson, Wayne Dwyer, Kelly Sullivan, Josh Fiore, Mike Foran, James Del Verde, Melissa Linden, Doug Perkins, Mike Ronemus, Megan Beck, and Isaac Bowles) 1:38:40 - 1:44:48 - Mike's Recap 1:44:48 - End – Outro Next episode we plan to have an elite on the show after competing in the first of the Spartan 3K Series in Palm Beach, Florida! ____ News Stories: Goliathon's G8 Endurance Event Infinite Hero's 22 Miles to Break Boundaries MudGear Gloves American Ninja Warrior Update Olympian Nick Symmonds Takes on an OCR Obstacle Sports Canada President Spartan Charlotte Sprint Podiums Spartan San Diego Sprint Podiums Hyrox Cologne Podiums Hyrox Malaga Podiums FIT Challenge Results Bard Secret Link Happy Birthday Secret Link Delilah Secret Link Strong Secret Link Wall Bars Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: 14. Mike and Katelyn drove down to New Jersey to run and cover Muckfest MS! Unfortunately, we got a cancellation text message while we were driving down. Mike then planned to pivot and cover Tough Mudder Long Island, but that was also cancelled due to the extreme heat. Then when all hope was lost (because Mike also didn't pack his mic to do phone interviews), Juan Carlos Correa stepped up and said that he could talk to some people at FIT for us! Thank you again, Juan! 0 - 2:23 - Intro 2:23 - 5:50 - News 5:50 - 9:38 - Content Preface 9:38 - 33:40 - FIT Challenge Interviews 33:40 - end - Outro Utah Spartan Super Results Spartan US National Series Results Running the Tour de France Marylou Whitney NYC Triathalon Cancelled Secret Link Don't miss the next FIT Challenge OCR Discord (where you get wicked FOMO from everyone else at events) Next weekend we will be hearing from Angela or Jimmie after running Tough Mountain up in Maine! In this episode we laugh at a friend and discuss photography lighting.
Mike Furey was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at the age of 26 after experiencing sensations of numbness throughout his body. MS is a chronic, typically progressive disease involving damage to the sheaths of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, whose symptoms may include numbness, impairment of speech and of muscular coordination, blurred vision, and severe fatigue. Mike first started feeling the symptoms of MS after waking up one morning after some intense PT sessions at his new job with the National Security Agency. The numbness started in his feet end eventually crept higher and higher up his body. Eventually he got to the point where he was numb from the neck down, but eventually improved over time. However, Mike was told by his doctor that the exercise initially brought on his symptoms (not actually true). After his doctor told him this, Mike made a negative association with exercise, which was completely out of character because of his background in law enforcement and as a college basketball player and he rarely talked about his condition. In this episode Mike talks about the thoughts, feelings and emotions he experienced after his MS Diagnosis. It took about 4 years of being nervous to exercise for Mike to realize that he didn't want to live like that anymore. His passion for mud races began with one of the first Tough Mudder races in 2010 with one of his co-workers. The sense of accomplishment became addicting for Mike. Eventually, his wife told him about a MuckFest that raises money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Mike started a team for the New Jersey MS MuckFest in 2012 and since became ambassador for the race, which is a far cry from being afraid to exercise and being secretive about having MS. 2016 marks the fifth year of team "Filth & Furey" and they have raised close to $50,000 during this time. In addition he talks about his basketball career and the life lessons he learned from being a "late bloomer" and playing on losing teams. There is a lot to be learned from this episode no matter if you are an athlete or not. I am proud to say that I have joined team Filth & Furey for the 2016 MuckFest in New Jersey on June 25th and 26th. Join the team, register your own or donate at the links below!
