The Carpool with Kelly and Lizz

Is it a vent sesh or another episode of the Carpool pod chock full of all your favorite segments? How about both? Lizz brings the new construction neighborhood news, and Kelly reports on her ‘big trash week' treasures. Kelly has some things to get off her chest, and the episode wraps with a few heartfelt tears.  Kelly and Lizz's little sister Sydney came through with the millennial word of the day today: slay. As in, “That's so slay,” and, “Stay slay forever!”  The gals continue their search for a soda to drink that isn't soda on the taste drive with the Cola, Cherry Cola, and Dr. Zevia flavors from Zevia. Kelly and Lizz don't see eye to eye on the reviews but agree that they'd splurge on the Mountain Dew and Grape Soda-inspired flavors to try them, too.  Kelly shares how she's using Canva to make mood boards for her kids' rooms and recommends a podcast listen: How I Built This featuring Melanie Perkins, the creator of Canva.  Kelly recaps her lasagna marathon and is excited for her next meal-prep date with a bestie that'll stock her freezer full of tasty chicken enchiladas. The gals love the new buzz about butter boards, and their chat triggers Kelly's next pregnancy craving. Lizz adds some Trader Joe's dinner inspiration to the mix and suggests that everyone follow the fabulous Anna Lisa over at @traderjoes5itemsorless. Industry news today is sponsored by Edmunds. Car shopping can be confusing, especially new car shopping with the current inventory shortages. Things are starting to cool off in the used car market, and Edmonds goes the extra mile to make car buying easier. They have a ton of used car buying resources like car reviews, video test drives, online shopping tools, and the latest consumer advice. Check them out at Edmunds.com  The industry's anti-slay of the day award goes to Elon Musk, who is claiming that the new Tesla truck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat. Car and Driver is asking some hard-hitting EV questions and the gals are curious, too: What are fire-fighter concerns about taming an EV fire? Kith partners with BMW on a new line featuring Edward Norton, and the gals dream up a handful of other darling ideas for triad collabs. TRIGGER WARNING: Today's advice segment speaks about pregnancy loss as October is pregnancy infant loss awareness. Will a passionate and loyal consumer base be enough to push Zevia towards public market gains? On June 25, 2021, Zevia filed its S-1 document to the SEC with the intention of raising up to $100 million from the sale of common stock shares through an initial public offering. For those not aware, Zevia was founded in 2007 by Ian Eisenberg and husband/wife lawyers Derek and Jessica Newman. It was actually two years earlier when the three founders learned about stevia from a California friend who was a "health food nut." At that point, they said “we should start a soda company using this.” They hired a flavor artist to create a formula that eliminates stevia's bitter aftertaste. The product took various iterations to master (especially the cola flavor), but the founders knew there was a growing subset of people that were looking for a natural diet soda that could replace all the artificial sweeteners and sugary sodas. When Zevia was in R&D mode and even initially commercialized, the plant-based natural zero-calorie sweetener stevia wasn't allowed to be a food additive, so it was sold as a dietary supplement. Will the founding team grew Zevia to four employees and net sales of just under $7 million, it was sold to ex-Kashi executive and SPINS founder Paddy Spence in 2010. Under the control of a seasoned natural/organic industry leader that also authentically lives a sugar-free lifestyle himself, Zevia has blossomed into a powerhouse beverage brand over the last decade. In this podcast episode, I'll run through the current financial snapshot of Zevia, sales/customer breakdowns, product platforms, and it's ESG/B-Corporation values. Finally, I highlight consumer mega-trends that Zevia should benefit from that will also drive continued category growth.

As Tom and Julee attempt to move forward through the basement, they run into some hurdles, hassles and emotions: they meticulously analyze the exact "clean the basement" orders issued by Mom, struggle with jealousy over the lucky kids who used to be cast in 80s toy commercials, Julee tries to further refine her work station, news of Dad's unfortunate case of shingles is reported, and Tom feels the need to cleanse himself of weird stress dream starring...a, well...a familiar friend. (And, yes, the dream was in "landscape" -- hee hee). Will they get ANY work done? Now in their forties, Julee and Tom are reconnecting as brother and sister in THE MOST distant a socially-distant podcast can be in the United States. While recording on each coast (and seeing each other over FaceTime) all the way from Los Angeles (Tom) to Boston (Julee), they start unearthing the core lessons, laughs and connections of their childhood. Plus, Julee has to fight her fear of cobwebs while Tom enjoys the comfort of his office -- yet he CAN'T touch his beloved toys like she can. As their Instagram bio indicates -- @backthroughthebasementpod -- you can follow them there to see pictures of everything they unearth -- Tom & Julee (actors, comics, voiceover artists & siblings), children of the 80s, must go through all their toys and belongings in their parents’ basement. Why Zevia is a Healthier Alternative to Your Favorite Sugary Sodas?Drinking sugary soda may be a hard habit to break, and oftentimes, quitting from it cold turkey can lead to a stronger urge to drink more. Hence, instead of bidding soda a bitter and sudden goodbye, it’s easier and more realistic to search for healthier alternatives. Some people just can’t stand drinking water all day. They would always long for that tingling sensation every time their favorite soda passes through their throat. The same concept applies to all of your unhealthy cravings. The good news is you are capable of making better picks. And you can start making smarter decisions in your diet by looking for healthier alternatives to your unhealthy choices. And today, I will start by sharing about Zevia, my personal favorite as far as replacements to carbonated beverages is concerned. What is Zevia? Contrary to what most people think, Zevia isn’t a single beverage or soda. Instead, it is a line of all-natural, zero-calorie refreshing beverages. And yes, all Zevia products don’t contain artificial ingredients and they are colorless because they don’t have added colors even caramel or whatsoever. Zevia products – sodas, organic teas, mixers, and energy drinks – are 100% sweetened with stevia leaf extract. Whether you believe it or not, stevia leaf is 200x sweeter than the regular sugar, but here’s the good catch – it has zero caloric value! And aside from that, it is also friendly to diabetic patients because it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels.Do Zevia drinks have the same strong punch as the regular sodas? Well, honestly speaking, they don’t. And they also lack the strong flavors of your favorite carbonated beverages like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or Mountain Dew. However, they are good enough to satisfy your cravings and of course, they are far healthier alternatives even from the so-called “diet” colas, which contain aspartame, a known carcinogen. I couldn’t emphasize enough that if you are a regular soda drinker, you are setting your health down the road of diabetes or cancer. And no sane individual would want to choose either of these fatal conditions. But sad to say, the reality is that there are a lot of people who struggle each day with these two serious medical conditions and even more. Five Reasons to Switch to Zevia All-Natural Cola Most of the time, healthy food or drink options tend to be bland, but that’s not the case with Zevia. In fact, Zevia sodas are available in 14 delicious flavors, and they also have products that contain caffeine. Let’s face it, we do need a little boost once in a while. If you think these are enough reasons to make your switch easier, wait until you find out more about the five reasons why you need to give Zevia a shot.Zevia is Available Across Every Beverage CategoryWith the help of stevia leaves, this Los Angeles-based line of healthy beverages is able to offer zero-calorie and zero-sugar drinks from sodas, organic teas, drink mixers, sparkling water, and energy drinks. What else could you ask for? Zevia is the answer to your guilt-free pleasures. Zevia Beverages Meet the Demands of Different Meal PlansWhatever diet you are right now – Keto, Paleo, gluten-free, kosher, or vegan – each can of Zevia beverage would go well with it. Zevia products are also good alternatives if you are avoiding GMOs or certain minerals like phosphorus and sodium. Moreover, they are also free from the 8 FDA regulated allergens: milk, fish, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, wheat, and soybeans. Studies Have Shown That Stevia is Better Than Artificial SweetenersLike what was said earlier, all Zevia products are sweetened by stevia leaf extract. And the wonderful thing about this plant is that it helps lower blood sugar levels to as much as 18% as

How to Stay on a Keto Diet While Traveling

Fly with Chris and Di

We are on location today, and we are recording outside while we are waiting for our room to be cleaned. We aren't going to tell you the location on this episode, but Chris does drop a couple of hints. We are both on the keto diet or at least eating in a way that puts our bodies into ketosis. We are basically becoming fat burning entities. Although, Chris's version is a bit modified. Keto and healthy eating are popular, but it still takes some effort, forethought, and planning to eat keto or focus on eating healthy while traveling. This show focuses on eating foods that are high in good fat, with moderate proteins, and low carbs. There are different types and versions of the keto diet, but this show should help get the wheels turning on how to stay on your eating plan while exploring the world.  Show Notes:   [05:56] Our number one focus is having a plan. You want to think about accommodations, transportation, and what you need to bring with you.  [07:27] When on a road trip take a cooler. Pack things that may be hard to find and, of course, anything you need while on the road.  [08:50] If your traveling by plane, you can leverage the Shipt app. This is a 2-3 hour delivery service owned by target. You can have water or whatever delivered at your hotel.  [10:13] If you are staying at an Airbnb, you can always run to the grocery store.  [10:47] You can also shop beforehand using grocery pick up services. [11:11] Amazon is another amazing option. Put the apps on your phone before hand.  [11:44] Keto friendly foods that travel well are mustard, salad dressing, spices, cooked meats, boiled eggs, avocado, pork rinds, and heavy cream. You can also throw in cheeses, chia seeds, and berries.  [14:16] It's also helpful to have keto coffee and protein shakes with MCT oil.  [15:57] There's a Whole Foods next to our  hotel, and the breakfast we got there was so good that we went back for lunch. [16:30] Think about things to snack on for air travel. We like jerky, coconut chips, nut butters, pork rinds, tuna packets with keto mayo, stevia, nuts, and bulletproof coffee. Put coffee in your carry on, so the drug dogs don't think you are trying to cover up a scent.  [17:49] Get perishables when you are at an Airbnb. They are very friendly for special dietary restrictions.  [18:41] You have to be a little more creative when staying at a hotel. The free breakfast can be loaded with temptations. It's a carb buffet. [20:06] We like Vega and Best Fat Fuel shakes. Magnesium and potassium are important for women.  [23:35] We also like Zevia soda. Root beer is our favorite. [26:34] Grilled and sauteed meats are easy go-tos. Make the best choices, you don't have to be perfect. Cheeses and avocado are great choices. Vegetables and leafy greens are perfect. Chris loves asparagus.  [28:40] Watch the condiments. Look out for sugar and carbs. Oil and vinegar or adding avocado are great for salads.  [30:55] Bacon or sausage and eggs are great for breakfast. You can have grilled chicken with no bun. [31:47] Lunch options include a bacon cheeseburger with no bun. Grilled chicken, nuggets, and salad are a great option. You can get an unwich at Jimmy John's.  [32:57] You don't have to be perfect, but it helps to be aware. Especially, if you travel a lot. [33:41] There are tons of dinner options like grilled fish and vegetables. Lobster and butter is also keto approved.  [34:51] Drinking on keto will slow down the ability to breakdown fat, but champagne or dry wines only have about two net carbs. [36:12] Unfortunately, beer isn't keto approved.  [37:06] Most liquors are no carbs. Just leave off the sweet mixers. [39:01] Fish options include flounder, herring, salmon, sardines, sole, tuna, trout, cod, and halibut. [39:17] You can also try Cornish game hen, duck, goose, pheasant, quail, or ostrich to mix things up. Di's favorites are shellfish like  clams, crab meat, mussels, oysters, shrimp, squid, and lobster. [40:01] You can have whatever meat you want as long as it's not fried. Try things like bacon, beef, ham, lamb, pork, and veal. [41:09] Cheeses are also one of Di's favorites. Think about trying things like parmesan, goat cheese, blue cheese, cheddar, gouda, mozzarella, cream cheese, Swiss, and feta. [42:10] You can also use a carb manager app to make things easier. Having a fitness app can make sure you are moving. The Apple watch also has a cool fitness tracker. Meg flawlessly serves looks as a conventionally hot person, while sounding off on attachment style theory. Caroline enjoys calling her Megolodon. Caroline and Meg's eyes glaze over as Lucia talks about her recent trip to India, which is pretty messed up since Caroline is the one who brought it up. The Gems look forward to the high traffic of listeners on this post, due to Meg's impressive Instagram following. As always, sponsored by Zevia!

#WeGotGoals
How Zevia CEO Paddy Spence Uses Goals to do "More" to Help Him Succeed

#WeGotGoals

For so many of us, setting SMART goals feels natural. It feels like the most promising way to achieve success. For Paddy Spence, CEO and Chairman of Zevia, there's a time and place for time-boxed, specific goals, but there's also room for much, much more when it comes to goal setting. On this episode of #WeGotGoals, I got a dose of Spence's refreshing take on non-binary goal setting, and heard how it played into his business journey that led him to purchase the massive sugar-free soft drink brand. "You plot your course, but you just don't know where you're going to go," Spence said. "I knew I wanted to run a business, I knew I wanted to be in the natural foods industry, and didn't know much beyond that." His first post-graduate school job was with Kashi cereals, a time he describes as "constant discovery, learning, and trial and error." Spence explained further his non-linear journey, with steps forward and equal or more steps backward, while exploring the natural foods industry. But he attributes his outlook on goals in a non-binary way as what really led him to success and helped him stay sane along the way. "Accomplishment is never linear. It's a zig-zag, it's lumpy. There were so many twists along the way." And if you only see goals as black or white, achieved or not achieved, those twists along your journey can be quite de-motivating. So Spence uses the words "more" and "less" to define some of the things he works toward. Like "Spend more time with my kids, or floss my teeth more. What's more? it just means 'more.' The finish line type of goals are satisfying, but so many of the things we try to do on a daily basis, there's no finish line. There's no finish line to being a good dad. There's no finish line to being healthy. It's all about continuous improvement." But Spence also has this keen awareness that success can be both a continuous journey and, simultaneously, something you've already achieved. "We don't tell ourselves that enough," Spence noted. Too often, he told me, he sees young people that believe "'If I don't do steps X, Y and Z I won't have succeeded.' "I tell people, you know what, you've already succeeded. You're a college grad, you're in a job, you have a roof over your head, you have a paycheck. That sounds pretty good to me. Success isn't something that's out in the future, it's within our grasp today." This summer, Spence suffered from a detached retina, an experience that, although necessitated an eight-week intense recovery period, allowed him to ultimately see clearly what was most meaningful in his life. Post-surgery, Spence couldn't read, write, lie down, exercise or travel for eight weeks. "I had to sit in a dark room for that period of time and really couldn't do much. One of the things I realized is how much I was missing, how much I missed the interaction with my family and co-workers ... It made me so much more grateful for everything - to be able to see, to interact with people, to be able to take my kids to school." And during that time, Spence did what he could: he meditated. "It's a joke to say you're good or not good at meditation, but I know I got a lot better of those eight weeks." Of the things Spence values most, his family is at the very top. In fact, one of the biggest goals he's proud to say he's achieved is all around his connection to his family. In this episode you'll hear just how much he values it, the steps he's taken to keep his time and attention prioritized on family, and how he continues to use meditation to set his daily intention on what's most important in his life for his family and for Zevia. Hear the full episode with Paddy Spence on #WeGotGoals anywhere you get your podcasts — including Spotify! If you like what you hear, please leave us a rating and a review. It’s hard to overestimate the impact that Patty Spence, the founder of market research firm SPINS and CEO of stevia-sweetened beverage brand Zevia, has had on the natural food industry. With SPINS, Spence transformed the way that natural product sales data is tracked and aggregated and in doing so created a powerful resource for a fast-growing industry. After departing SPINS, Spence became the CEO of Zevia, a company that he acquired in 2010, and has since played a key role in stevia’s development as a leading natural and zero-calorie alternative to sugar. The sweetener is central to the formulation of Zevia, which is expected to pull in over $200 million in sales this year. In a conversation included in this episode, Spence remarked on the success of both SPINS and Zevia and pointed to a passion for continuous improvement as key to his business philosophy. “We never think we’re at the end point,” he said. “It’s about being one percent better each day, each week than we were before.” Hear more from our conversation with Spence, in which he extolled the importance of marrying personal insights and passion with quantitative data, his perspective on work-life balance and whether a multi-billion dollar exit is imminent for Zevia. Show notes: 2:35: Interview: Paddy Spence, CEO, Zevia & Founder, SPINS -- In this interview, recorded via weblink, Spence spoke to BevNET Managing Editor Ray Latif from Zevia headquarters in Encino, Calif. Spence discussed the origins of his career and what motivated him to launch SPINS, how a decision to cut sugar out of his diet led him to  Zevia, why he believes that in the future “sugar is going to be used -- as it should be -- as a condiment, as a drug,” why all Zevia employees are offered stock in the company, and why Spence believes that it’s critical to be home for dinner every night. I'm just loving this season of podcast because we're having such a diverse group of guests! Today I'm speaking with Paddy Spence, CEO of Zevia. Zevia is sugar free soda company, the first one to use stevia as sweetener in their drinks! Their founder Paddy has tons of experience in natural and organic industry and in working for companies that make natural and organic food and he decided to embark this journey of starting a soda company that didn't have much artificial sweeteners in them. If you are interested in making a product - this interview is exactly what you need to hear! Also, Paddy has so much experience the wellness industry and I loved picking his brains about his view on the competition, how to hire and build a good team, and how to decide what to work on in your business. From the changes and trends in the natural and organic industry, to all those juicy questions about his morning routines and how he keeps himself motivated - we're covering it all in today's conversation, and you don't want to miss it!Also, it's summertime here in London and I'm curious to know if you are taking some time off this summer? I have just came back from New Hampshire where I have spent some time with my family, but also did some retreats and workshops, loads of writing, and worked on the part of my business I have been delaying for a long time. So my advice for this summer is definitely to try and do both if you can: take at least a few days off to just reset, and then get some perspective and see if there's anything in your work that you may have been putting off for a while and set it in motion.
