Probiotic Bifidobacterium May Boost Cancer Treatment and Suppress Tumors

BUFFALO, NY – November 18, 2025 – A new #review was #published in Oncotarget (Volume 16) on November 14, 2025, titled “Mechanism of anticancer action of bifidobacterium: Insights from gut microbiota.” This review, led by first author Hoang Do and correspondent author Ashakumary Lakshmikuttyamma from Thomas Jefferson University, explores how bifidobacterium, a common probiotic found in the gut, may contribute to cancer prevention and therapy. By analyzing existing studies, the authors highlight the growing importance of gut health in cancer treatment and shed light on how bifidobacterium could complement standard cancer therapies. Bifidobacterium is widely known for promoting digestive health and is often included in fermented foods and dietary supplements. However, emerging evidence suggests it may also play a broader role in immune regulation and cancer defense. The review explains how certain strains of bifidobacterium may enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy in cancers such as breast, lung, colorectal, and gastric cancers. According to the review, bifidobacterium influences cancer outcomes through several biological mechanisms. It helps regulate immune function by reducing inflammation and supporting the activity of immune cells that target tumors. For instance, strains like B. longum and B. breve have been shown to lower levels of harmful inflammatory markers and boost anti-inflammatory responses. These changes can make cancer treatments more effective while also reducing side effects. “Presence of Bifidobacterium breve in gut microbiota extended the median progression-free survival of NSCLC patients.” The review also discusses how bifidobacterium helps detoxify the body by breaking down cancer-causing compounds and limiting their ability to damage cells. In preclinical studies, the probiotic reduced the activity of enzymes that produce carcinogens and helped in converting food-based substances into cancer-fighting agents. Some strains were even found to suppress genes that promote tumor growth and increase molecules that trigger cancer cell death. The authors emphasize that diet plays a critical role in supporting the growth of bifidobacterium. Foods rich in dietary fiber, especially those containing inulin and oligosaccharides like garlic, onions, or leeks, can help increase its levels in the gut. This suggests that simple dietary changes could not only improve gut health but also support cancer prevention and treatment strategies. Although the review presents compelling evidence, the authors stress the need for more clinical trials to determine how different strains of bifidobacterium affect specific types of cancer. Personalized approaches may be necessary to match the right probiotic strains with individual treatment plans. As research continues to uncover the link between gut microbes and cancer, bifidobacterium stands out as a promising natural ally that could enhance the body's defenses and improve cancer treatment outcomes. SSRI prescriptions are more common than ever—but how much do we really understand about how they work, their true efficacy, and their potential downsides? In this episode, we take a deep dive into the world of SSRIs, breaking down their mechanism of action and why their use has skyrocketed in recent years.   We unpack the growing concern around emotional blunting, a well-documented effect that can leave individuals feeling flat, disconnected, or lacking drive. You'll learn why the serotonin deficiency model falls short, what SSRIs actually do in the brain, and why so many people are placed on them without a root-cause approach. We also explore powerful food-as-medicine and lifestyle strategies proven to support mood: from low-glycemic eating and amino acid repletion, to gut health, micronutrients, and more. Yogurt is touted as a health food that can help support the gut microbiome, but really, how healthy is yogurt? In this video, discover all the things you didn't know about yogurt. Your gut health depends on this!0:00 Introduction: Is yogurt bad for you? 0:10 Fermented foods 1:00 Yogurt side effects and benefits 3:10 Commercial yogurt vs. homemade yogurt5:11 Unhealthy facts about yogurt6:45 Processed yogurt ingredients 8:59 Probiotics, kefir, and sauerkraut The benefits of yogurt and other fermented foods do not lie in their ability to reseed the gut. The real benefit is the change in environment. Fermented and cultured foods change the pH and oxygen levels in the gut. They also provide food and metabolites for the gut microbes, which can also help activate dormant microbes. Many microbes have been suppressed by antibiotics, junk food, and other factors. Many of them are keystone microbes, which are vital for your gut health. Unless your yogurt says it contains live and active cultures, it's been double-pasteurized. Commercial yogurt typically ferments for 1 to 2 hours, whereas traditional homemade yogurt ferments anywhere from 8 to 36 hours. By the time you eat commercial yogurt, there are significantly fewer CFUs of bacteria than stated on the label.Sugar in yogurt can kill the friendly bacteria and feed pathogens in your gut. Added ingredients, such as pectin, gels, and guar gum, inhibit bacterial movement. Yogurt fermented for only 1 to 2 hours will not have the right texture or thickness, so ingredients such as modified food starch, carrageenan, and polysorbate 80 are added. These ingredients can destroy the mucosal layer of the gut, leading to leaky gut and inflammation. Many commercial yogurts contain artificial sweeteners, which are known to alter the gut microbiome. Many processed yogurts contain bioengineered food ingredients that may contain traces of glyphosate, a patented antibiotic. This means the very product you're consuming to support your gut health could be destroying your gut microbes. Probiotics contain significantly more microbes than yogurt. These freeze-dried microbes are often able to reach the large intestine and reseed the gut, especially when taken repetitively. Kefir, which contains both bacteria and yeast, is also a better option than yogurt.Sauerkraut is an excellent food for gut health. It contains polyphenols, postbiotics, SCFAs, sulforaphane, organic acids, glutamine, and the compound s-methylmethionine. Think popping a Costco multivitamin and a random probiotic from Instagram makes you healthy? Think again. In this episode of The Wellness Effect, we're exposing the dark side of the $200 billion supplement industry and revealing why most women are either throwing money down the drain or actively making their health worse by supplementing blindly. From the supplement graveyard collecting dust in your pantry to why 65% of Amazon supplements are literally fake, we break down what's actually happening when you pop pills without testing. Whether you've been handed a thousand-dollar protocol without bloodwork, you're dealing with hormonal chaos despite "doing everything right," or you just want to stop guessing and start healing—this conversation will completely transform how you approach your health.   In this episode, you'll hear: (00:14) - The supplement quality wake-up call: Why your Costco multivitamin and Amazon magnesium are probably worthless (06:21) - How blindly taking probiotics for years led to dangerous gut bacteria overgrowth and inflammatory dysbiosis (08:33) - The Amazon supplement scandal: 65% don't contain what they claim, and how sellers are creating fake versions of legitimate brands (12:24) - Supplements as band-aids vs. root cause solutions (14:17) - The red flags that scream "you need functional supplementation" (and when to run from practitioners pushing products) (25:31) - Why your hormones aren't the problem: The downstream effect you need to understand before buying another "hormone balancing" supplement (35:05) - The non-negotiables (41:42) - The probiotic food hack: Why fermented foods beat expensive probiotics every time (47:49) - Our real supplement routines and why less is always more   Key Takeaways: Supplements are meant to be supplemental to solid foundations—if you're eating fast food and not sleeping, no pill will save you The supplement hierarchy: Start with real food and hydration, add minerals and electrolytes, then layer in personalized support only after testing Quality matters more than you think: Amazon and Costco supplements are often filled with cheap fillers and have zero third-party testing to verify what's actually inside   Want more from us?
