When Chris and Marty Fagan go on an adventure, they go big! From bike tours through Africa to racing sailboats in Alaska, the couple is a dynamic duo of adventurous spirit. Over the winter of 2013/2014, that spirit culminated in a 48-day ski expedition to the South Pole. Upon completion, they became the first American married couple (and second married couple in history) to complete a full unsupported, unguided, unassisted ski from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole. In fact, they're two of just over 100 people in all of history to have traveled to the South Pole in that way.Chris is an amazing storyteller, and I hope you enjoy this conversation about two parents risking it all for a chance at an extraordinary adventure.  Chris' book about the trip, The Expedition: Two Parents Risk Life and Family in an Extraordinary Quest to the South Pole, comes out September 3, 2019. It’s no surprise that major life transitions are great times to have an adventure. So many of the stories told on this show are from trips where folks are between jobs, taking a gap year, after a divorce or experiencing other life-altering news. But what about the folks in the throes of “normal life”? Is there hope for those folks to have a life-changing adventure or are they forever stuck in weekend warrior mode? If you listen to this show on a regular basis you know the answer is that adventure is all around you, all the time, and tapping into the joys adventures bring doesn’t take months or weeks to accomplish. Today, Frazer gives us an inside look at the winning formula that has allowed him and 12 buddies a trip-of-a-lifetime once a year, every year, for the last 15 years. It’s a simple formula but following the steps rigorously is the only way Frazer and his friends are able to make it happen on a consistent basis. Maybe it’s a formula that you’d be willing to adopt for yourself and/or for your friends to guarantee your next amazing adventure will actually be put on the calendar. Frazer’s story is also featured in the Adventure Journal here ( https://www.adventure-journal.com/2018/09/annual-trip-equal-parts-dictatorial-madcap/ ). Christine’s love for backpacking started the same way many of the adventures on this podcast start, with a Google search. Her quest that day? To find out what this backpacking thing was all about. After only a few articles into her search, Christine decided to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. It was a huge leap of faith but she immediately got to work to make that dream come true. The funny thing about making a dream a reality is that it’s not what we typically imagine. The realness of life usually gets in the way and what actually happens before, during, and after an adventure is anything but what we plan for. Today we’re going to hear Christine’s story of how her experience hiking the AT changed her and all the adventures that have come before and after it. Back in 2017 while sitting on the couch and watching sports news coverage, Laura noticed the dismal amount of time dedicated to women’s sports. What struck her the most was “the fact that there are more stories about horses than women in the sports pages”. Being a proficient soccer player herself and experiencing the frustrations of minimal coverage and a general lack of opportunities, she decided to do something about it. A quick Google Maps search and a few emails later, Laura devised a plan to elevate women’s sports higher than it has ever gone, literally. The idea was to gather a group of women to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and play an official game of soccer near the summit. The journey became a gathering of 60 women from around the world with referees, goals, etc. all climbing above 18,000 ft. to play a soccer game. Their efforts stand as a Guinness World Record, a testament to their dedication to raising the coverage and opportunity for women in sports, and was the genesis of Equal Playing Field ( https://equalplayingfield.com/ ) , a non-profit Laura co-founded. After the success of climbing Kilimanjaro, Laura continued to chase Guinness World Record soccer matches to raise awareness for women in sports and show the world women can do anything. The lowest elevation soccer game was played at the Dead Sea in 2018, and two world records were achieved in France thereafter for the most nationalities represented in a soccer game. The long-term action Laura has taken is through her startup, Ida Sports ( https://www.idasports.co/ ) , which is aiming to create a soccer boot specific to women, something that has never been done successfully, but something needed due to fundamental differences in men's and women’s feet. If you learn anything from Laura, it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid of going down a path no one has ever gone before, especially if a better world is on the other side. As a kid when Marcus wanted to play football and baseball his mom would only allow it after he fulfilled one condition, learn to swim. Even after excelling at track and football, the foundation of swimming was what Marcus always came back to and also excelled in. He eventually went to college on a track and swimming scholarship, giving him a leg up in the sport of triathlons, which he would soon discover. Seeing a lack of diversity in the sport for a multitude of reasons, Marcus began to strategically find ways to break down the barriers in his community to create avenues for new folks, especially those of color and minorities, to try and excel in triathlons. This led him to organize the District Triathlon club in DC as an official 501(c)3. After a handful of successful years growing the community and seeing even more potential, Marcus then decided to start GRIT USA, an adult endurance and multisport development program for triathletes. Today Marcus splits his time between growing GRIT, pursuing his other goals like the Speed Project, and using his platform in the DC area to continue to be a voice of change, equality, and hope. After stints skiing and surfing out west, even going up to Alaska to alpine tour, Andrew was ready to come home and spread the stoke in his own backyard. After refamiliarizing himself with the White Mountains that he still calls home, the constant questioning from like-minded folks wanting to know the best places to go just off the beaten path, as well as folks wanting to dip their toes in this new backcountry craze, led Andrew down a path he never thought he’d lead...retail. Having opened his shop, Ski the Whites ( http://skithewhites.com/ ) , to help satiate the area’s needs, the growth of community and adventure has only risen as well. Now outfitting folks for skiing, biking, and runnings, the shop has even begun dabbling in coffee to further meet folks where they are with what they with the focus always being on a solid community. That first haphazard attempt at adventure racing began a lifelong pursuit of mastering multi-day adventures, competing in every Eco-Challenge that followed, and accumulating wins and awards from races in every corner of the globe. Having watched his father compete in these epic events, it was no surprise that Travis not only followed but excelled in his father’s footsteps. Her ongoing 5-year passion for camels has taken her to places like The Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and The Tirari Desert, Uluru, Michigan USA, Texas, and Rajasthan India. At some point in the pursuit to learn more about these amazing creatures, Sophie got the idea to cross Australia on foot while being accompanied by 5 wild (or “feral”) camels. This would not only entail catching and taming 5 out of upwards of a million wild camels that roam Australia but also walking thousands of kilometers across the vast and void Australian Outback. Keep in mind, Australia is the geographic size of the US with 1/10th of the population. A wild idea indeed! Instead of calling one place home why not call the whole world “home”? To dip their toes into this way of living they spent a year in Costa Rica, then a year in Educador, and 9 months in France. Those first few years included experiences like hiking the Inca Trail, traveling around the Galapagos Islands, and dance classes deep in the Costa Rican rainforest. To continue explorings their new “town” they hopped into an RV and visited every country in Europe for another two and a half years while homeschooling their kids, completing a thru-hike of the Camino De Santiago. Now that COVID has interpreted the original plan of traveling around Asia, the family is taking to the seas to experience life aboard a sailboat while growing their business, WorldTowning and WorldTowning Voyages, wherein small groups of travelers embark on shared experiences and adventures to travel the world as locals on roads less traveled with their family as the hosts. worldtowning.com ( https://www.worldtowning.com ) youtube.com/worldtowning ( https://www.youtube.com/worldtowning ) Instagram: @worldtowning ( https://www.instagram.com/worldtowning ) Facebook: @worldtowning ( https://www.facebook.com/worldtowning ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

She discovered the mountain bike amidst a career in outdoor education and quickly fell in love with bikepacking which dominoed into pursuing long bikepacking expeditions around the world. That led to racing to see if she could, which turned into wondering what her best looked like. Kait then won a 24-hr World Championship, set records in self- supported ultras that rival the strongest men. One day, after leaving the grocery story, she was struck by an oncoming vehicle that lost traction in the snow. Nate is a trail runner and climate activist based in Missoula, Montana. His personal and professional focus is to use both his voice as a mountain athlete and skills in marketing & data science to catalyze a climate-friendly world. He races occasionally, but primarily specializes in fastest known time (FKT) challenges and loves the creative process of dreaming up new linkups. His most recent FKT was the first-known continuous linkup of the tallest peaks in Glacier National Park, Montana; a solo, unsupported six-day effort covering 150 miles and nearly 60k feet of ascent.Nate holds a master's degree in Resource Conservation — which focuses on the social science of climate action — and is currently in an additional master's degree in Business Analytics. He is a member of the Protect Our Winters Athlete Alliance and also works as the Marketing Director for Footprints Running, a nonprofit climate action incubator. These backgrounds and passions made Nate a perfect candidate for the The Snowman Race, which follows the trail of the famous Snowman Trek, which has been completed by fewer people than Everest. Covering 126 miles (203 kilometers) through the wild and challenging terrains with mountain passes as high as 17,946 feet (5470M) the Snowman Race is an ultra-marathon, challenging the world's fittest and most elite runners to help raise awareness of the impacts of climate change. Nate's info: Instagram: @natebender10Personal website: 10peaksbeforelunch.comFootprints climate action incubator website: runfootprints.org The Snowman Race: snowmanrace.orgSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
