The New York Guardians are one of eight teams in the newly created XFL. The American football team will play its home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the same stadium that houses the New York Giants and New York Jets. The home opener for the Guardians, coached by former Giants offensive coordinator and former LA Chargers head coach Kevin Gilbride, will be February 9 against the Tampa Bay Vipers at 2pm. New York Guardians President Janet Duch sat down recently with SportsJam host Doug Doyle to talk about the new league and her role with the Guardians. Duch spent nearly three years as the Senior Vice President of Marking and Communications for On Location Experiences in New York City. Prior to that she was Senior Vice President of Marketing for the New York Rangers and New York Knicks. Scott Soshnick, Eben Novy-Williams and Michael Barr discuss a host of issues related to the business of sports, including the legacy of former National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern, who died at the age of 77. Stern served as the league’s commissioner for 30 years, stepping aside in 2014 after helping to make the NBA a global sports and entertainment powerhouse. Also discussed is the college football national championship game between Louisiana State University and Clemson University. The football programs generate about the same amount of revenue but differ widely on profit. And also discussed is the sale of On Location Experiences from investors that include Bruin Sports Capital and RedBird Capital to Endeavor -- the talent agency and media business led by Ari Emanuel -- for $660 million. The NFL will remain an investor in the business.

WWE’s annual extravaganza grossed $16.9 million, surpassing the venue’s previous record of $12.3 million in 2013. The event’s biggest match featured all-female participants. Also discussed is Adidas’s new partnership with pop star Beyonce, who’ll help the company to develop footwear and apparel. She joins a roster of celebrity partners that includes Kanye West. John Collins, chief executive officer of On Location Experiences, discusses the business surrounding the high-end hospitality business that surrounds the Super Bowl. On Location, which is part owned by the NFL’s 32 owners through their investment vehicle, 32 Equity, offers luxury travel, accommodations and experiences like on-field, post-game access. It’s offerings include a number of NFL events beyond the title game, including the Pro Bowl, draft and international games in London and Mexico City. Collins joined OLE in 2015 from the National Hockey League, where he served as COO for nine seasons. He spearheaded a number of initiatives at the NHL, including the popular Winter Classic outdoor game. Prior to that Collins was a senior executive at the NFL for 15 years before taking over as president of the Cleveland Browns for the 2004-06 seasons.
