Beneath UCLA's Dickson Court lies a hidden structure with a storied past. Built in 1927, the Arroyo Bridge was the university's first major structure—used to transport materials, shelter students during the Depression, and store wartime supplies. Though buried in 1947, it still stands, now part of a six-mile underground tunnel system that powers the campus. Listen as contributors Srinidhi Nagarajan and Olivia Miller uncover its history, speak with UCLA's Assistant Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management, and share firsthand audio from Olivia's guided tunnel tour. A transcript of this episode will be available at dailybruin.com/category/podcasts within 24 hours.

Martin Burns, CEO of Bruin Biometrics is a former management consultant who worked with Deloitte and PwC and has also served as a guest lecturer at UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he taught entrepreneurship in biotechnologyAt Bruin, Martin is leading the charge to bring pressure injury (bedsore) prevention into the 21st century. Bedsores are entirely preventable yet remain one of the most under-discussed threats in hospitals today, especially among patients with darker skin tones who are often overlooked by traditional visual assessmentsIn this episode, Martin explains why a biology-first approach is needed to tackle these “silent killers,” the major cultural and systemic hurdles to adoption, and why he believes sensor technology should become as routine as checking blood oxygen levels. We also explore investor skepticism, the importance of diverse clinical validation and the operational realities of implementing new technologies in hospitals without disrupting workflowsTimestamps:[00:00:18] What Are Pressure Injuries and Why They're Deadly[00:02:12] The Moment Martin Saw the Real Problem[00:03:58] The Biology of Subepidermal Moisture[00:06:53] Turning a Science Project into a Scalable Product[00:10:06] Why Traditional Risk Assessments Fail[00:12:41] Addressing Skin Tone Bias in Wound Care[00:17:14] From Skepticism to Adoption: Changing Clinical Culture[00:21:55] Beyond Bedsores: Future Sensor Applications[00:24:17] The Nurse Assistant That Frees Up Hours[00:26:52] Mountains, Gym Days & Recharging Outside WorkGet in touch with Martin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-burns-9391a57/ Learn more about Bruin - https://sem-scanner.com/ Get in touch with Karandeep Badwal - https://www.linkedin.com/in/karandeepbadwal/ Follow Karandeep on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@KarandeepBadwalSubscribe to the Podcast

Join Tony Bruin in this compelling episode of Cogitations as he tackles the phrase “I was born this way” with a bold biblical response: “Then be born again.” This episode explores the conflict between cultural narratives and the gospel's demand for transformation.Tony contrasts human instinct with the moral framework revealed by God, drawing from both scripture and powerful insights from fellow Substack voices like Dunson Wrights and Drew Milligan. With reflections on law, therapy, and the enduring epistemology of Christianity, this episode calls listeners to examine the soul's responsibility and God's offer of new birth.

BUILD A BETTER BUSINESS | Too many agents confuse their database with their pipeline - and it's killing their growth. Angela and Dylan break down the fundamental difference between your sales funnel and your database—two essential but very different lists that every successful real estate business must master. Learn why your database is not the top of your funnel, how to think differently about nurturing relationships vs. working leads, the specific work to be done in each list (hint: different hats, different outcomes), the LRC framework and why getting this distinction right is the foundation of a scalable, referral-based business. Whether you're brand new or a seasoned pro, this mindset shift is crucial if you want a business that's not only productive but also sustainable and enjoyable. Steve Layman visits with Belmont softball head coach Laura Matthews. The pair discuss Belmont's highly-successful regular season, which included marquee victories over Arizona State, Purdue and Maryland (x2). Matthews shares about how she managed expectations, approached scheduling, and navigated adversity, in large part due to leadership from her Bruin upperclassmen. Matthews provides revealing thoughts about the transformational changes at Rose Park, and how she and her coaching staff have forged strong bonds with the baseball and soccer coaches. Matthews also addresses personal challenges in coaching during COVID, overseeing the Wright State softball program when the university elected to no longer sponsor the sport, and seeing things to the other side in her native Nashville at Belmont. Layman sparks conversation on standout pitcher Maya Johnson and the qualities she possesses to rank among the nation's best. The pair also preview the MVC Softball Tournament, and get a laugh about Matthews' dream job.
