0:15 -Childhood Sports Memories and Influential MomentsAmy Shelley reminisced about her childhood experiences with school sports, highlighting the freedom to explore different activities. She cited David Beckham as her sporting hero, noting how she admired his skills and tried to replicate his free kicks. Additionally, she reflected on memorable sporting moments, including Kelly Holmes' gold medal win and the women's Euros final in 2022.7:40 -Introduction to Amy Shelley's Research on Player Development in RugbyAmy Shelley is a third-year PhD student at Dublin City University, focusing on male player development in rugby through a collaboration with Premiership Rugby. Her research seeks to identify factors that influence player progression, emphasizing the importance of policies and the structure of the talent system. Shelley brings a fresh perspective to the field, having a diverse background in physiology without prior specialization in rugby.11:45 -Analysis of Player Progression in Rugby AcademiesAmy Shelley presented her findings on the progression of players from rugby academies to the premiership, particularly examining those identified as having high potential. She noted the diversity among the 14 academies, highlighting differences in resources, nomination strategies, and cultural values. Michael Wright contributed by discussing the varying definitions of "outstanding" players across different environments.20:51 -Analysis of Rugby Player Development and Academy SelectionAmy Shelley presented key insights from her research on rugby academies, noting that players identified as high potential at age 16 had increased chances of progressing to the premiership. Interestingly, players who were not initially recognized as academy players but later joined the Senior Academy had even higher conversion rates to premiership appearances. This suggests that perceptions and expectations from coaches can significantly influence player development.28:33 -The Impact of Early Labeling on Young AthletesAmy Shelley and Michael Wright examine the challenges faced by young athletes who are labeled as high potential by sports academies. They consider the potential pressures and expectations that come with this designation, including the impact on individual development and the risk of burnout. Additionally, they discuss how this labeling may affect the way coaches in other settings perceive and interact with these players.32:22 -Insights on Academy Differences in Rugby DevelopmentAmy Shelley presented findings from her second paper, which focused on the differences among rugby academies and their influence on player development. She conducted interviews across 14 academies to understand how various contexts, including school environments and coaching practices, impact player conversion rates. The research identified four key themes related to the structure of the talent system and resource allocation.43:33 -Insights on Player Development in RugbyAmy Shelley addressed the limited time frame for developing players from selection to senior contracts, noting that environments with more opportunities tend to accelerate player development. Michael Wright raised concerns about the variability in coaching approaches and how they affect player readiness for first-team environments. Shelley pointed out that the integration between first teams and academies is crucial, but changes in coaching staff can disrupt established systems. Hosted on Acast. We're back with a bang as we welcome Harlequins CEO Laurie Dalrymple to the show. This is one of English sport's most historic organisations. Laurie has been in charge of the Premiership Rugby team for over 5 years, establishing them as one of the leading commercial entities in the game while delivering huge success including league titles and European Cup semi-finals on the pitch.  We've had some incredible rugby chats on the show in the past. This is no different. From the viability of teams as sustainable businesses to the development of more players as ‘sporting icons', Laurie gave us a compelling review of what it means to run a historic sporting organisation fighting to remain at the forefront of sporting entertainment. But can one club achieve real success if the league isn't set up to facilitate it? Our age old ‘rising tide lifts all boats' discussion. We also recorded this a few hours after the club announced a bumper new deal for Marcus Smith; couldn't have timed that better. Before joining Quins Laurie was previously Managing Director of Wolves, overseeing the signings of Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota, and Nottingham Forest's high flying manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Rugby fans, football fans, there's something in here for everyone. Importance of Talent Top talent on your roster is essential to building a better commercial vehicle that brands want to interact with. From Marcus Smith to Alex Dombrandt, how have Harlequins looked to enhance the profile of their star players to build value into the club. Is rugby capable of delivering global superstars? When the sport is all about the importance of the team, is there a place for ‘superstar' personalities? Is there concern that the salary cap and spending restrictions placed on English clubs causes the top talent to move abroad or not come to the Premiership in the first place? The importance of legacy and ensuring the players appreciate what has gone before them at this historic club. Financial Management Is Laurie a supporter of the salary cap model and why was it introduced in the first place? Can the financial challenges experienced by clubs in recent years be purely attributed to spend on the pitch or are there other factors at play? How does the salary cap work? What are the budgets and how can they be spent? How have Harlequins built the most valuable club in England with the highest revenues? From enhancing fan experience to trusted brand partners. What are the financials of the club? Despite performing very well in the existing environment they are still not profitable. Rugby vs Football What did Laurie bring into rugby from his time as Managing Director at Wolves? Where were there direct crossovers and what was the biggest difference? What is a better investment? Buying a rugby club or buying a football club? What are the differences between owners in rugby and football? How does the business model change? Should football have a salary cap? Reflecting on the signings of Neves, Jota, and the Wolves team that returned to the Premier League  Our Partners: Orreco  www.orreco.ai Scan.com https://uk.scan.com/

Johann van Graan is a world-class coach and in his role as Head of Rugby is responsible for the rugby programme at Bath Rugby.   He holds complete responsibility for rugby matters concentrating on the coaching and performances of the team, overseeing all coaching and performance staff.   Van Graan began his professional coaching at the Blue Bulls, and under Head Coach Heyneke Meyer, with focus on forwards and attack, he helped the South African franchise win three Super 14 titles.   He moved on to become the Springboks Forwards Coach, winning the bronze medal at the 2015 Rugby World Cup before becoming Munster Head Coach in 2017.   The 44-year-old has extensive coaching experience, spending five years at Munster before moving to Bath in 2022.   Throughout his career van Graan has developed a long line of players who have gone on to feature regularly on the international stage for Ireland, South Africa, England, Wales and Scotland.   Van Graan's leadership saw Bath reach the Premiership Rugby final in the 2023/24 season, narrowly missing out to Northampton Saints to be crowned runners-up after just two years at the helm of Bath Rugby.   In 2024, it was announced that van Graan has committed a further five years to Bath Rugby, seeing him stay at The Rec until the summer of 2030. Key words: Premiership Rugby, Northampton Saints, Six Nations, British and Irish Lions, England, Sports, Family, BLM, Leadership, The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ)In this episode we are joined by one of rugby's finest international players: Northampton Saints legend, British and Irish Lion and former England Captain Courtney Lawes. When Courtney decided to retire from international rugby after last year's World Cup, there was some shock – not least because he was still in the form of his life. But the Dad of four was clear that the time had come to be at home with his young family, not on tour or training with his England teammates. That belief in the importance of family is central to Courtney. Having seen up close how life can go wrong without that stable background, he is a passionate supporter of the Centre for Social Justice and their work promoting the importance of family and the value of sport. Serious injuries, a result of Courtney's uncompromising style of play, have led to long periods on the sidelines. The uncompromising opinions that he holds off the pitch have brought vitriol on social media, most famously when he dared to offer a view around Marcus Rashford's campaigning. His resilience in those difficult moments, on and off the pitch, is just one of the revealing and useful discussions we have in this episode. My thanks to Courtney for joining me.Full transcript available here:https://www.crisiswhatcrisis.com/podcasts/courtney-lawes-on-facing-down-the-haters-fighting-for-family-values-and-refusing-to-take-the-knee/Links https://twitter.com/Courtney_Lawes https://www.instagram.com/bigcourts89/https://www.instagram.com/p/C3Cq4f7M4w6/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Stream/buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bmSome Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk Your Daily Practice: Sleep by Myndstream: https://open.spotify.com/track/5OX9XgJufFz9g63o2Dv2i5?si=b2f9397c92084682 Host – Andy CoulsonCWC team: Jane Sankey, Louise Difford, Zach Ellis and Mabel Pickering With special thanks to Ioana Barbu and the brilliant people at GlobalFor all PR and guest approaches please contact – podcast@coulsonpartners.com
