Patty Chang Anker created the blog Facing Forty Upside Down to chronicle her efforts to overcome some of the fears she'd had since childhood--fear of swimming in open water, of riding a bike, and so on. But the project soon grew into an outreach with other people who were confronting fears of their own, and a powerful education in how to reject the critical internal voices that keep us from enjoying life to the fullest. She joins me to talk about what she's learned--and how her previous career as a book publicist prepared her for becoming a published author.

We all remember, or have learned about, FDR telling the nation that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”  In fact, it along with a clip from The Kings Speech is being used in a commercial for a new technology that might help us overcome, what is considered everyone's worst fear, that of public speaking.  Perhaps we remember Woody Allen fearing that the universe was expanding, and how that seemed  like a good enough reason to skip school, in 50’s era Brooklyn. The country is on the brink of disaster because we have elected officials who are afraid of voters, and most of all, afraid of not being reelected. The bottom line is that in a macro world view, or in the intimacy of our personal lives, fear is a powerful motivator. But what would happen, how would the world change, how would we change, if we could mitigate or eliminate that fear. That's what  Patty Chang Anchor set out to find in Some Nerve: Lessons Learned While Becoming BraveMy conversation with Patty Chang Anker:

After a lifetime of living nowhere near the edge, Patty Chang Anker, a former Director of Media Relations for The New York Times and a veteran book publicist had enough. Declaring a year of saying yes to things that frighten her, she launched a blog - “Facing Forty Upside Down.” Her inspiring and entertaining blog is now getting a lot of buzz, and is featured in Good Housekeeping magazine January 2011 issue. She is also on Babble.com 2010 Top Nominated Mom Blogs List. As the mother of two adopted daughters with special needs and a certified yoga instructor, Patty realized she couldn't expect her children or students to go outside their comfort zone if she wasn't willing to do it herself. In Facing Forty Upside Down, Patty takes readers boogie boarding, diving, ice skating, fishing, river rafting, and eye-to-eye with a crocodile in the wild, all the while chronicling the ups and downs of daily life with humor and heart. Patty and I will be discussing about her life's journey, her current mission, and the power from within. Please call 347.327.9995 on Tuesday January 25th from 10-11 am U.S. CT to join Patty and I live on the air with your questions and comments.
